@Ben Warner yeah he is, he said that he didn't want to break his hands without gloves, and i think mc carthy (the referee) made fun of him, as i remember the story. and now everyone is wearing gloves lol
For a guy who had hundreds to thousands of bar fights. There is a reason why he wore what eventually would be MMA gloves. A pioneer in MMA. Had a wrestling background which was unusual for a guy who predominately used strikes.

lol that song choice. Tank was a beast, back in the day, though. His only losses were to Scott Ferrozzo (underrated. Find me another 300+ lb guy who could fight like that), Don Frye, Oleg Taktarov( both of those two had extreamly suspicious and fast wins to former sparring partners, in the semi-finals of their tornaments. Also, Abbott was bulldozing Frye, until Tank literally slipped up), Vitor (Do I even need to say it? He was on enough gas to fuel an ocean liner from china to new york and Tank said he wasn't ready to be stopped when the fight was called), Maurice Smith (credible opponent), Pedro Rizzo (Tough fight, got cut down like a redwood by those leg kicks for 7 minutes and then ran into the perfect right hand), and Dan Severn (Dan hit Tank with every strike known to man and Tank still regained his feet towards the end of the fight). After his time in pro wrestling and his return after 4+ years at 38, Tank looked like he just didn't really want to be there anymore. Half of his offence had been taken anyway from all of the new rules.

Back in the good ol' days where a kind of fat guy that was good at bar fights with little to no actual training could go 10-15 and still be remembered as a legend 25 years later.
Early UFC with no rules and weight classes was awesome. Only huge problem was all the injuries from before Tank taught them to wear gloves, mainly, which screwed up a lot of the tournaments.

You can tell by his style he's been in a shit ton of barfights. It says on Wikipedia he's been in over 200 bar fights before the ufc losing very few of them. I believe it he honestly had an enormous amount of punching power, a good chin, and good wrestling skills he just had a terrible gas tank and didn't train much in martial arts.
Back when Tank was making his debut he was asked if he was nervous about fighting guys who had 10 to 20 more professional fights then him. He said if you count all the times he's been arrested for assault then he's been in more fights then all the other fighters at the event combined. I found that funny because it's more then likely true. I'd liked to have seen videos of them. To bad there were no camera phones in the late 70's to 80's
A little strategy, a little timing, a little cultivation of his wrestling and a little bit of a disciplined game plan with a little diversity and other moves and he might have been one of the goats. Entertaining as hell
