    The crunchy pomegranate has a little bit more that i'd like to add. In Thai, ruby and pomegranate are the same word. People literally took the name of ruby to call pomegranate, so the dessert is called after the fruit, but the fruit is called after the gemstone (hope this is not confusing😅). But people sometimes dye them in different color and change their name after the gemstone that have the same color, like if it green, it’d be crunchy emerald, blue could be crunchy sapphire. However, ruby red is the most popular and familiar one.

    I really like how Perth repeats the pronunciations in a way that's understandable and easy to say. I've always wanted to know what the desserts tasted like after watching UWMA and now my curiosity is satisfied. I don't know if Perth explained it before but I always wonder why students wear uniforms in university, like I see in a lot of series too different types of uniforms are worn?

    • @nutsupasukprasith8015
      @nutsupasukprasith8015 2 года назад +69

      In Thailand, the reasons that student wear uniform in University is because it's mandatory. We do have many style of uniform although all of them are white shirt and black dress/pants. Traditionally, it might be because it's a way of honouring the education place? Like you wouldnt want a student to come in dress in short mini skirt (same logic as not wearing shorts in temple because University is also a sacred place in a way that people respect education) and also a way to state that everyone is equal(no matter how rich or poor, in the university you are their student) In every university the uniform are actually the same but what differentiate student from each university is the "pin" they pinned on their shirts or the belt which contain the specific university symbol. Again, when going to university sometime u do forget to put on the pin or the belt lol The occasion where u have to dress more formally is when u are taking the exam. However, all of this dress code does also depends on how strict your univerisity is.

    I love this series a lot. It's not just about fangirling anymore, the culture itself is hella interesting. Just, one thing I was always curious, why, oh why, are most of the protagonists set as ENGINEERING students? what's with this popularity of engineering in Thailand?

    • @threeleggedcat
      @threeleggedcat 2 года назад +75

      The answer Tul of MaxTul gave about this (in a interview with the Let's Talk BL podcast, which is here on youtube if you want to watch it), was that it is because engineering is associated with like very masculine guys, whom typically wouldn't be associated with being lgbt, basically I believe it's kind of about it being unexpected and therefore more interesting/dramatic, though I am sure there is more to it, like it also being a popular thing to study perhaps? I'd still love to get a more in depth video by Perth on it though, but, that's one answer

    • @SisterUnity
      @SisterUnity 2 года назад +27

      @@threeleggedcat You hit something with the gender roles. BLs are not gay per se.. they are a genre originally made for women! The psychology behind the storytelling is the vicarious thrill of watching two men portray a paradigm of a heterosexual, male/female relationship or romance.. and to see the masculine male in his paradigm role interact with a male in the paradigm or traditions of a female's role in a romance! As BLs have moved from manga and Yaoi to TV, that formula has blurred, esp. with huge LGBTQ audiences now participating in the dialogue between production and audiences thanks to social media. BLs are now a mix of that tradition from manga and gay content from real life.

    • @sunnyv7745
      @sunnyv7745 2 года назад +7

      @@threeleggedcat Yes engineering seems to be known as an all boys club career in Thailand from the looks of things and authors are using this setting since there are more guys in it. Also they might be inspired by stories that other authors have done with this faculty and the old BL tropes get used as well due to authors not doing much research on lgbt+ persons etc. I think Thai and other Asian BL series are in very much need of lgbt perspectives in their stories like we have Western BL stories that are more lgbt+ inclusive and diverse in storytelling.

    • @jiyang4602
      @jiyang4602 2 года назад +3

      I think it's because engineering is a male dominated field.

    • @sunnyv7745
      @sunnyv7745 2 года назад +7

      @@SisterUnity Yes exactly right! BL was a genre where female Japanese artists at the time created using well two male characters and put them in a romantic situation. I believe CLAMP artists are the ones who were the first artists/ authors involved but not too sure. BL also known as yaoi/ shounen ai stories were made by women for other women to portray gay romance simply because these female authors didn't like the way straight stories were being told. I personally wish they never used gay characters but instead made femdom stories but seems like they didn't. It's interesting to learn about the psychology behind it too. However, while BL became popular over time and not instantly like GL however, there are barely any Asian GL series and GL series seem to not have as much popularity too.

We have Klepon in Javanese desserts that kinda similar to Kanom Ko, the difference is that we used coconut sprinkles and it is a totally a mouthgasmic dessert. It's chewy and the palm sugar filling will feel like exploding in your mouth.
    Tubtim grob also kinda similar to Javanese Wedang Ronde, but instead of using coconut milk syrup, we use ginger syrup and the tapioca pearls have different colors. Wedang Ronde is a dessert that can be enjoyed at night.
    And the last, we also love mung beans. There are many desserts that use mung bean paste for the filling.

    I actually made Leum Kleun a couple days ago, after waiting for some molds to be shipped in from Thailand. Everyone I gave them to liked them quite a bit!

    Yay! Thank you! UWMA is my favorite BL series ever and it was great to revisit it with these desserts! I can't wait to visit Bangkok again so I can try these in person. One subject I would like explored is the various uses of gendered language (pom, chun, rao, etc) when it comes to gender non conforming people and/or when speaking in intimate situations. I notice sometimes that there will be switching: Mean Phiravich's character, Tin, in Love By Chance 2 uses "chun" but only when speaking to Can. Also Tohu, in Miracle of Teddy Bear, uses "ha" which I'm curious about. I don't know if that is a casual topic, per se, but I am curious.

    • @Ocean8soul
      @Ocean8soul 2 года назад +1

      I've had the same question, and I actually listed more of those:
      *Ter เธอ (casual?)/mung มึง (impolite?)/ni/nai (from a senior to a junior?)/khun คุณ (as in khobkhun ขอบคุณ, thank you): you
      *Guu กู (impolite)/laow (in laow wa thøøt, I'm sorry) /chan ฉัน/phom ผม (masculine): I
      *Man มัน (impolite, because that's for animals)/khao เขา: him/her/they
      *Rao เรา: us
      Nai was first introduced to me in SOTUS S, when (Nong) Nai says to P'Yong he thought he knew his name because he was always calling him Nai (but P'Yong was saying "you") and I heard it again for the second time in A Chance to Love as well (/Love By Chance (LBC) S2)
      Guu/mung are quite common in BLs, but LBC teaches us they're impolite
      Ter is often used in songs, I got it from OffGun songs (NOT ME ost) and ofc most of NuNew's Cutie Pie songs
      But it would be real nice to have the explanation from P'Perth, and I'm curious to know if there would be more pronouns in Thai... It sounds so rich!

    I love how Perth is also learning new things about Thai culture as he's making these videos. We're both learning new sh*t mate!
    Also, i kinda wanna rewatch UWMA but...i honestly dont know if my heart could go through all of that again. 😅

    Everytime you post up one of these I get a huge hit of nostalgia from my childhood. I went to high school in Bangkok (ISB). My mẹ would take me to the markets and we would have a bunch of these as snacks. Plus, she makes a version of Tub Tim Grob (we call it Chè Thái) using different food colour dyes so it's all of the colours not just red plus some other additional ingredients. I look forward to all of your future posts. Take care!!!

    Surprisingly there is a very similar dessert in the southern part of India, Kerala called "Ela ada" which is pretty close to "Kanom Tom". How beautiful it is to learn these simple things from around the world and be able to connect to all. If used the right way internet is gorgeous. I love your content. Keep going. All the best.👍
