    I'll never understand fans that forget that actors are just people living their own lives too, not their property or whatever parasocial delusions they might have 😢 Fanservice can be soo cringey and I hate when it feels like they're forced to have any intimate moments, even if just friendly. 'OMG, they touched shoulders!' Sheesh.... Anyway, love these q&a's and congrats on POT! 🎾😊

      The actors and film makers do it as well. You see them purposely hanging all over each other without fans asking for it. that's because they want their product to be successful. You can't just blame the fans when the film makers understand the actors getting shipped helps make their movies or TV shows more successful. So they "show off" when in public for exactly that reason.

      I think it might be one of those chicken and the egg things. Maybe fans spotted a real spontaneous 'moment', reacted to it and that made people want to do fan service to generate a similar response. Or maybe fan-service came first.

      I agree here. I am gay and I find it cringey when fanservice gets too touchy and they are not interested and I can feel that. Whenever I think of fan-service, my mind just goes, “Why?, just why?” Personally for me, the couple starts and ends with the series. Shipping actor’s is weird. People need to be able to separate the actor’s from the character’s they play. I honestly do not get why they make something so simple, so complicated.
    Anyways, great video. It was a great way to end my day.❤

    I am so glad that the only thing I've ever tweeted at you is "The most relatable part of Cutie Pie is Perth trying to eat his own bills, because same bro, same." Some of the things I see "fans" tweet at actors... I just want to walk up to them and go "Would you say this to their faces? No? Then shut up."

      But, I too, lived years without that 2 and sometimes am as surprised and am like "Seriously guys, you do realize that they do read and understand that?!" "I sometimes really don't want to know what our favourite Artists thinks what's going in the heads of their audiences!" It goes from "lol not wrong but did you have to put that online? Gonna be so embarrassing in xy time!" to "This now in the end is just delulu and 2nd hand embarrseement!" Granted, you speak from your own experience however I do believe that it gives us a great insight in the industry whose products we consume. I also appreciated that you mentioned the s. harassment that the actors are constantly being putting through since it quite often, feels way too out of control (my guess is that sometimes, some people, forget that you guys are human being that will see that specific comment!). 10:59 speaking as a bi person with some gender fluidity, at the core it is very simply a person loving another person. The differences are superficial and also come down to the individual. Gender is an aspect of a person but there are so many other factors. You don't love them because they're a girl or a guy, you love them for the person they are. When you describe the things about someone you love, many of those things won't be gender-specific, for some examples, a sense of humour, kindness, passion for art, dedication to their family or their business, shared values, adventurous, quiet... Anyone can be those things.

    • @IrinNovy
      @IrinNovy Год назад +14

      @@kristalclearly9777because it goes without saying. It's different for bi people since they are attracted to both genders but for straight or gay people it is the first thing, which is so basic that it doesn't need to be mentioned. You are just not gonna see any other characteristics in a romantic light otherwise. We form our first impressions of people in the first 10 seconds. We decide if we are attracted to them in that time too. So yeah, you notice a nice smile, a good sense of humor etc but it's always in regards to platonic or romantic feelings (friendships or sexual/romantic relationships).

    • @monazite5488
      @monazite5488 Год назад +10

      This is all of course true, but I think most people are more skeptical about straight people playing gay roles because straight people won't ever fully understand the nuances of homophobia and discrimination that gay and LGBTQ+ people in general face, as well as just the complex identities they formed growing up that straight people just didn't experience and thus would kind of only gain some sort of understanding by talking to queer friends. Thus, people think straight people may not completely get the character their playing, which is a fair concern. However, when the characters someone's playing don't really deal with the complexities of a queer identity in a drama, as Perth's really haven't, then I think the concern about straight people playing them can be soothed since a straight actor could understand them more easily.

    Love that you pointed out the BL stories have become more complex. I think in the past the themes were quite repetitive and kind of one dimensional but now the stories have so much depth and character development and that’s been my favorite part of the evolution of BL. I’m also so so happy that GLs are becoming more of a thing because queer girls deserve representation too!! That being said regarding the comment about “mature content” I think it makes sense when it fits the story, but sometimes it does feel forced and when it’s forced it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The great thing is that because there’s so many BLs you can really choose what fits your preferences, there’s plenty of soft and cute dramas and there’s plenty that have mature content as well (and by mature I mean not just sex but themes that include violence, trauma, etc).

    I agree that recently actors have calmed down with the fanservice and I appreciate it a lot. As you've said some like it and some don't, I personally just like to see the cast getting along, including the lead couple but putting on an act for fans usually feels weird to me, especially because it creates such a problematic interaction between fans who do and the ones who don't like it meaning especially the ones that do like it also always "fall" for it in the sense that they throw big words like homophobia around whenever people tell them that it's in fact just fan service and that said actors have neither confirmed nor denied dating or even being into people of the same sex. As you've said, it's cool just taking it with a pinch of salt and having fun with it but unfortunately there will always be people reading way too much into it and genuinely believing these interactions to be true without there being any form of confirmation. But I feel like recently it has calmed down, everyone is just promoting their shows, having fun and getting along in a friendly way which is so fun to watch.

    I feel like the fan service debacle can clearly divide fandom, and from what Ive noticed, international fans are the ones who don't need/want fan service, who don't care about it, while the Thai fans want it, sometimes even demand it. It seems to me like a lot of Thai fans can't distinguish between onscreen stuff and reality.

    • @ukiss4ever7
      @ukiss4ever7 9 месяцев назад

      Actually, it's more about the age of the fans. Not all Thai fans want fan service, I mean, they do enjoy it at some certain levels but not all wants it. And like I said, it's about the age of the fans, younger fans seems less aware of fan service being part of the actor's job. The older fans are very aware of it, they can differentiate whether the pairing's relationship is real or fan service. They enjoy it at certain levels of fan service and some likes to joke with actors about the actors being in a relationship, it's a way of their joking and dream, that's all. Yes, they want their pairings to date for real but they also know the limits too. Younger fans are less aware.

    The thing about the sex sells (I know you covered it with "mature content" but let's call it what it is), it's true that having intimate scenes in a series makes people talk and even watch it. We've seen it with some series going viral beyong the BL community. Personally, I don't mind intimate scenes but sometimes it's quite obvious they're added just to "satisfy" a certain audience. I wish BL producers would focus more on writing complex characters and leave out these scenes that are just there to make people scream at their screens. Or rather implement them better into the story. There's a series currently airing that perfectly does that, it's a fun watch while also offering great plot and drama. It's all about being authentic while still making something fun or exciting.
    We've come a long way since those early BLs and at this point there's some really great stuff out there. I hope we'll continue to make good content and not add scenes without context just for one sole purpose

Anyway for recent BL, it’s not just saturated, it’s over saturated so for me, it’s simple, any trailer than doesn’t catch my attention automatically gets pushed down and I wait and watch for stories which trailers catches me. Mature content or not, for me it’s the story. Yeah I can consume mature content for the sake of it but it’s kinda like fast food, people can get bored easily even though it’s yummy, fast and convenient. Great job Perth with the Q&A. I personally mostly dislike fanservice, especially when the actors are forced to do things they are not really comfortable with it, but do it bc they know the fans love it + their series get more recognition. Also, fake/pretend relationships are so awkward. I do love real life chemistry though, whether that's just because you are great friends, have a close bond, or in some cases, a more romantic connection. It's just nice seeing people work together and actually having fun together!
    11:21 "we are all going to die anyway" 😂 But seriously, I've always said this myself; as long as you are not hurting someone, just do whatever you want/makes you happy!

      I am rooting for natural chemistry only like you do but I think they've already got it that it's way much better and more successful that way so they created those workshops for actors to give them time to adjust and dig deeper in the connection they have. So it's happening. It's not so depressing if you think about it. Basically most actors have an intention of being really friendly, lovable and understanding of each other and it's not for the sake of money or fame, it's for genuine purposes. For us.

    At the beginning I did not know of fan service, so I thought everything is genuine and they are together in real life. 😂 But honestly, I’d rather there would be no fan service pressure at all. Fans have gone too crazy because of fan service. Going to the extent of hating specific actors because they broke the “couple” and decided to act in straight dramas only or couple with someone else. Some fans forget that actors just do their jobs at the end of the day. Or fans hating on the actor’s real life partners because of the show “couple”. This is just wrong. If I like an actor I like him or her for their talent and for how they portray a role. Some fans just want to dictate everything that the actor is doing in his or her life.

I've kind of outgrown school stories, but as for innocent vs. steamy, it just depends on what I'm in the mood for. And now I can pick according to my tastes rather than just watching the few crumbs I could find :P

    Every bl has one job and that is to show that the characters love each other. Some have started using the mature scenes more to do this but the rest of the show doesn't have the dialog and depth for us to truly believe it. You gotta show the attraction, the care, the worry, and everything else that comes with loving someone. With the amount out there now you can find characters that suit you and make you happy to rewatch and I love that our selection has become so broad now we can't even watch it all

    I really liked your take on the maturity of how BL is being produced. When I first got into Thai BL, I was in college and really enjoyed ones that took place in university settings because it was relatable, buuuut now I'm 25. I skip many of those now because they aren't as mature as I want them to be. Which is perfectly fine for the genre, but as an adult, I like watching other adults in adult settings. I am glad that actors aren't being pressured into those roles though as it is a job at the end of the day, and they shouldn't feel harassed into fan service. Thanks for your candid responses!

    I'm glad you shed light on that last question. I know there is talk with the cast members on how far things would go in certain scenes before they're even hired on, at least letting the actors know so that they can make informed decisions. When we see the end product, we have to understand those actors went through workshops and managed to create a connection and are comfortable with each other. I don't think there is any pressure placed on them to do more mature things, you explained it very well and I thank you for it Perth.

After watching nearly all series from the Thai Bl industry it has made me look for deeper connections with people. I know it’s all acting but the love and strength you find in friendships and relationships within the different series made me want them connections in real life. You as a actor give us all a much wider look about life around us and always there to help us understand things within the Bl acting world. Thank you for being you and sharing your thoughts with us. I look forward to seeing what other work you do. Ram is still one of my favourite characters!

    19:55 Felt that: a while back I was able to watch every bl as it was airing (not only thai but also chinese, taiwanese and korean) but now.. I can't keep up, especially with thai bls. I still watch a ton of them, but I've definitely not seen everything that aired in the last 1-2 years. I mean, at least now we can be more picky about what to watch, as we have more content to choose from, whilist back in the day those 3 series were all we had and it was either that or nothing. If you think about it, all the other genres are "oversaturated", as it would be impossible to watch i.e. every single horror or romance or fantasy movie/series ever (also because they've been around for longer). We are noticing it with bls because we saw this genre grow over time, from niche to more mainstream, but i think this is just the normalization (?) process.
    Having said that, I do feel like some of the more recent series are a bit rushed, and it seems like they prioritize quantity over quality- while I think most people would prefer less stuff but done with care.
    On the other hand I do see some growth, and I'm very happy that the industry is evolving! Having been around for a while now and having seen almost 400 bl dramas (ik, I have issues and I keep track of everything), sometimes I feel like a proud mama lol
    Anyways, as always, thank you for the video and good luck for the new project! :)

Guys who are close friends act kind of gay lol. I think that's true in many cultures. So its not necessary to force anything if you find 2 guys who are compatible and become close easily. I'm really glad you addressed fanservice - I know it's popular, but I've seen SO many fans saying, and I agree, that we'd rather not have it if it makes the actors at all uncomfortable or causes them any trouble. Personally, I think if the couple is not actually real, they should stick to only behaving like friends at events and such.

KinnPorsche was a great balance of an enthralling story, interesting characters, great acting, and intimate moments that made the viewer feel they were seeing people express love, looking behind the curtain. Always needs to be a balance. There are so many BLs that are basically softcore p*rn that the BL audiences collectively disavow as crap.

      @@PerthNakhun Thanks for clarifying, Perth. Yes I agree about the comments, and there are often malicious comments including harassment related ones. However the good thing is these haters get called out by majority of the fans and it’s good when companies take action including legal action when some fans get too problematic with their comments or actions.
      Also although I mentioned about the workplace harassment issues I am aware that majority of the people are friendly and kind to each other. However in some companies, from a fan perspective, the whole group including the directors, producers, staff, etc do feel like one big family and I think actors would feel more at ease to give their best performances, whereas in other circumstances this might not be true. It’s natural for fans to not be aware of every behind the scenes issues, so we don’t really have the right to judge, but as long as issues are addressed and properly sorted out it’s fine I guess. 😇

    I’m voicing out then: I don’t like fan service because I feel like although you can ship people healthily, many people cannot, then you have cases of it coming out that one person in the ship is dating someone else and they get death threats and harassment. Fan service definitely contributes to people’s feeling of entitlement inside a relationship they are not in. Like, when the Freen thing came out, I saw people going “oh, poor Becky, she’s heartbroken” and use that to justify being bad to Freen because she “hurt Becky”, as if she was cheating on her, but we have nothing to do with their personal lives and, let’s be real, most likely Becky was well aware of it always and never cared

I personally think fans overthink it if they are is a pair that spend a lot of time together it’s natural for them to care for each other so watching 2ppl take care of each other isn’t a manipulation of the fan I think its a natural by product of ppl working together and forming a relationship

    • @erinskv
      @erinskv Год назад

      Absolutely agree on that. People manipulate themselves thinking a certain way. You choose the way you think about anything you see and no one can force you to see that at a certain angle. In most cases there is nothing romantic and suspicious going on between the actors so basically fans are just overthinking and sexualising those actors they "like". But what I hate the most is that they so obviously spread their negative perception of such things on other fans and the actors themselves. It's just ignorance and a lack of intelligence, that's all. As simple as that.

    Thank you for taking the time to talk with us and help us understand the BL industry a little more. I have a few thoughts to share as a BL fan.
    Fan Service - I find it confusing because sometimes it looks so real and come to find out it's "fake", so it leaves me with a not very good impression.
    Mature Content - I personally feel less is better than more about how explicit a scene really needs to be. Unless it truly fits the story in an authentic way. Most of the time a more tasteful thoughtful scene without everything being shown, is way more expressive and emotionally fulfilling as the viewer.
    Best of luck with your role in Japan!! PS - I visited Thailand this summer and watched your Thai language video first. Thank you for everything! ❤❤❤

    • @ukiss4ever7
      @ukiss4ever7 9 месяцев назад

      Fan service is not always negative and is not always fake. Even normal people do fan service for a certain reason and level too. Fan service is made by an agreement from the actors of which level they want to show their fans, but those services are NOT always fake. You have to realize which is fake and which is genuine, but if you can't tell by facial expressions and action microscopes then you won't be able to differentiate it. You have to look at their facial expressions and body language, if you see their comfort of being around one another then they are genuine. But if you see stiff body language or slightly a face that aren't "real", then that means it's fan service. However, doing a fan service, both actors have to make an agreement.

    I think context is everything for whether or not playing a different sexuality would be difficult to do. I have seen plenty of BLs where the setting doesn't have much (or even any) prejudice. In which case I agree that there's virtually no difference to playing a gay or straight character.
    But if the setting is more realistic, there is something to be said for how to approach a character that may have very different life experiences - being closeted, dealing with bigotry or even violence, internalized homophobia, self-hatred, shame, etc - and how that would affect their personality and ways expressing themselves. It's a different headspace to play a character that has to be constantly concerned with how others see them, being "found out", being stereotyped, etc.
