Al Jolson - Are You Lonesome Tonight (1950)

- Despite the claim on the sheet music cover, this was not Jolson's last record, although it was close to it. Recorded April 28, 1950. He recorded a group of Stephen Foster songs in July for an album, and those were his last recordings before his passing in October 1950. "Are You Lonesome Tonight" was originally a hit in 1927 with popular recordings made by artists such as Vaughn De Leath and Henry Burr, and has endured throughout all time. Other charted versions over the years: #19 for Blue Barron and His Orchestra in April 1950 (which I've also posted), #65 on Billboard Hot 100 in February 1959 for Jaye P. Morgan (which I've also posted), #1 for Elvis Presley in November 1960 (also #1 UK, #22 Country, #3 R&B), #14 for Donny Osmond in November 1973 (#31 Adult Contemporary), #46 UK for Elvis Presley in September 1977, #25 UK for Elvis Presley in March 1982 (laughing version), #57 Country for John Schneider and Jill Michaels in 1983, #68 UK for Elvis Presley in August 1991 (live version) and #2 UK for Elvis Presley in February 2005.

B-side is "No Sad Songs for Me" which I've also posted. - Видеоклипы
Are you lonesome tonight
Do you miss me tonight
Are you sorry
We drifted apart
Does your memory stray
To a bright summer day
When I kissed you
And called you sweetheart
Do the chairs in your parlor
Seem empty and bare
Do you gaze at your doorstep
And picture me there
Is your heart filled with pain
Shall I come back again
Tell me dear
Are you lonesome tonight
"I wonder if you're lonesome tonight
You know someone said the the worlds a stage
And each must play a part
Fate had me playing in love with you as my sweetheart
Act One was when we met, I loved you at first glance
You read your lines so cleverly and never missed a cue
Then came Act Two
You seemed to change, you acted strange
And why I've never known
Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you
But I'd rather go on hearing your lies
Than to go on living without you
Now the stage is bare and I'm standing there
With emptiness all around
And if you won't come back to me
Then they can bring the curtain down"
Is your heart filled with pain
Shall I come back again
Tell me dear
Are you lonesome tonight
😭
Never knew Elvises version was a cover. This one is great too! 😁
This is also a cover , the original is from the 20s , check it out
I've read that Elvis recorded Are You Lonesome Tonight as a tribute to Al Jolson.
No, the Colonel’s wife liked it.
The Jolson Story...Priceless.....
Nice love Al Jolson
Al sang this song in a movie called The jazz singer which was the furst sounded movie i 1929.
Thanks for uploading this. It has to be one of Jolie's last recordings, because he died later in 1950 after returning from entertaining the troops in Korea. His voice had such great tone, and the audio is excellent quality. There will never another like him.
His final recordings were an album of Stephen Foster songs {again, with Jenkins' orchestra and chorus}, in July 1950.
..Got this one...on the original BRUNSWICK 78 # 05442....I think this version is the best one...prefer it to Elvis's one.
Jolsons singing style seems strange to the modern audience.
But you need to remember he started off singing without a mic of sound system.
You had to project your voice out into a theatre of 1000s and get heard over the orchestra.
No mic, no amp, just your own voice.
Jolson kept this style even on his later recordings, and many of his later performances when they used pa systems he still shouted as he sang.
Rubbish!!!
Oh no. It says 'This video is not available '. I was looking forward to hearing this version. I love Elvis' .
The video is unavailable on some devices, so you might want to try it on your home computer if you tried it on a phone or something like that.
Seems to not like my phone. * lol * . I will have to listen to it via laptop when I get a chance. :)
It is beautiful.

Glad you like it! :)
Amazing how closely Elvis' rendition resembles this version. Both are very good, a little schmaltzy, but Elvis was a 15 year old when this was popular, so he no doubt was moved by it.
Accompanied by Gordon Jenkins' orchestra and chorus.
Check out the duet with Elvis on you tube now and www.jolson.org

This is far superior than Elvis's version. Way, way better.
I can't understand AJ's popularity. But everyone has different tastse, I guess. And the times change.
It is of course a question of taste but IMHO Elvis version is much better
