Sitting on the sand at seal beach calif l heard a piano playing April showers suddenly l realized that's jolson l walked down to the end of the pier ,their was a n elderly lady playing the song.we talked and she had played accompany for jolson and the reason that particular son hit a certain note, jolson could not hit that note.age has nothing to do with wonderful music.l am 81 this year and l still love jolso.
I was 5 when I first saw The Jolson Story, and decided at that moment, I would dance with my husband at my wedding. And 22 years later, I did. I love Larry Parks.
When my husband and I got married in 1968 he was in the Army and we didn't get to have a reception and have our first dance. Fast forward 20 years and we were at a 50th wedding anniversary celebration. My husband and I were part of the entertainment so he and I were on stage behind the curtains. The dj played the Anniversary waltz and I was peeking out watching the sweet old couple dancing. My husband tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned to look at him, he took me in his arms and we waltzed behind the curtains. It's one of my most treasured memories of my dearest husband. We didn't get to celebrate our own 50th anniversary as he died from cancer not many years after this precious moment in our lives. I was blessed to have him for as long I had him in my life. ❤
A childhood all time favourite, not only the great movie but the biggest memory of my late father singing Al Jolson songs around the house...thanks to Al Jolson and to the memory of my father...🙏
when I was little, my grandmother would sing Al Jolson songs all the time. she showed me the Jolson story, and though i know some parts aged extremely poorly, his love for entertaining stuck with me. As the years went on, we'd sing together, i went and studied acting, i wouldnt be the man i am without her help and guidance. I sang this song once, by myself from beginning to end, and she heard me. And she had a look of pride in her eyes, like... 'i'm glad I taught you, and i'm happy you listened'. The last song we sang was Sweet Sixteen, and even in her last hours, she was in perfect tune. We both were. RIP my dear grandmother, you were a lifechanger.
When I was a child I remember my father playing on the violin 'Oh How We Danced'. My father passed away 23 years ago, I am now 66 years old. After 40 years, I heard this song once more. It brought back very emotional memories of my father and tears to my eyes.
+Ramon Huss Another 66 year old signing in. The first I remember of this is singing it at junior school with pals. However our version, was. "We danced and we danced as the room had no bed". :-)
I LOVE THE ANNIVERSARY SONG ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITES IT BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES WHEN I THINK OF THE FOND MEMORY'S OF GROWING UP.IN A FAMILY THAT LOVED MUSIC AND ALMOST ALL MY FAMILY IS GONE NOW BUT THE FOND MEMORY'S LINGER ON..
Same. My dad used to sing this. He passed many years ago. But on my honeymoon I asked an accordion player on the Lock bridge to play a song. We were in Paris and he commented, you’re American? I said yes and he proceeded to play this song. It was a sign from my deceased. father!
I was only 10 sentimental years old when I first heard and loved this song. I gave my husband an Our Anniversary photograph music box frame which played that tune on our 40th Anniversary. We almost made it to our 65th but he passed away 4 months before. I play the music box frequently.
Thankyou Richard, I'd forgotten the name of that song that my mom & dad loved.*The Aniversary Waltz*. Magic nostalgic tune. My father ex Navy, brought home a music box from Japan with that tune playing when the lid was lifted. It was a black shilack box with Japanese writing on it🤗I can still see it as though it was yesterday🤗🤗🤗🤗
I'm 79 and I recall seeing The Jolson Story when it came out in 1946. I've always remembered The Anniversary Song from that time on. A beautiful song that should live forever!
Larry Parks was so handsome. He was 1:24 pure perfection in this role. So charismatic and handsome. What happened to him is disgraceful and simply awful. One of my favorite movies.
At 25 years of age my wife and I played this at our wedding. It was definitely dated but I did it to honor my 87 year old Grandma who played it at her wedding.
Wonderful memories of my parents dancing around the lounge room when I was a child brought tears to stream down my face. Beautiful memories but tinged with heartache. I miss my mum and dad so much.
Me to parents were so fabulous ,I cry a lot for them bless you I know how how you feel you are not alone , what beautiful memories kind regards Shirley h Darlington 😘🌹⭐👍🎵
I don't know if it's intentional, but the lightening....... watch when he's retired and how dark Larry's eyes look, compared to the moment here and in the nightclub when he sings and there's a sparkle in them again. I don't know if they meant to do it, but it's a visual that sticks with me to show, like you said, he just HAD to sing to people.
For my wonderful nana who fell asleep on her 57th wedding anniversary and this was played at her funeral. My pop raised my mum with this film, I was in turned raised by my pop with this film, my 10 year old son is the 4th generation to now have this film to return to to think of wonderful childhood memories. The jolson story, showboat, 7 brides for 7 brothers and many others.... there will never be magic like them again. At only 32 years of age, but now moved away from home, I watch this film with the most amazing sense of being "home" Never watched this without a tear since my wee nana left us
I'm 65, and I remember hearing my parents singing this to each other on their anniversary. They're both gone now, but I wanted to hear the music one more time. I miss you Mom and Dad.
Me too Ken Bomer. 88 yrs young.. Just been reading life of Larry Parkes but I will always have him in mind as Al Jolson. Absolutely brilliant performance. I saw the first movie when it first came out and chased its revival around the cinemas for years. The sequel as well. Not enough credit is given to it / them. Spoiled by McArthyism!
Al Jolson was the most favorite entertainer/singer of my Dad..He was & still is one of Hollywoods most famous entertaines of his time 30's 40'etc.He chose to continue to singing even when his wife asked him to stop . I've always admired him for making the best choice of continuing to sing & entertain to thank God for giving him this special talent in order to share it with many many people. sincerely, julio artist since 1961
Brings back memories of my father and mother dancing in the kitchen to the Anniversary Song...my father would sing to my mother...They were so in love -
I watched this movie with my dad ,we both loved loved it so much ,what a fabulous song ,sadly dad no longer with us but if you listening dad this is dedicated to you my special dad 😘☮️✋💝💋 Shirley h Darlington England 💝✋
I am in my late 50s and love old songs this is one of my favorites beautifully sang. Al Jolson had a unique voice you know straight away that he's singing.
Iam 59 yrs old this song was playing at te last anniversary party my parents had 35 yrs my father passed away not six months later I miss them both so much this song hits my heart ❤️ every time 💕
We need to bring this movie back! It is all there. Beauty, love, courage, great music, and the tragedy of being torn by conflicting emotions. TIME IT WAS ON T.V. AGAIN AT THE VERY LEAST!!.
Al Jolson was at his best when he recorded the sound track for the Jolson Story. A true love song, I still get a tear in my eye when I hear this. I was almost 20 years old when I shared it with a very special person.
This was my mom & dad's favourite tune, it was played quite often in our home when my dad was home on leave from the navy, a very fond memory for me. Al Jolson singing it is exquisite in my humble opinion🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
When this film was first released, I must have seen it ten times. It remains one of the best films ever. made. Every aspect of it is honest, and moving, Larry Parks with Jolson's voice was the most perfectly beautiful man I'd ever seen.. My reaction remains the same. This scene is cinematic perfection. Ahhhh the good old days.
i agree it's a great film, i've been a lover of jolsons music and voice since i was a kid, however, from what i'm aware, the movie is quite a gentle fiction, in comparison to the real life of al jolson, also many thing's aren't remotely accurate in the movie, for example, his mother died when he was 8, and he ran away with his brother etc, according to "the ole grape vine" there were many bad things that he did, to other acts etc, however whether that's all true or not who knows, we weren't there, but it's certainly the story that's told of him...... i think the film is possibly a much more pleasant fiction than the reality of the man, perhaps in some ways it's how jolson would've liked things to be, his fantasies perhaps (for some parts) i'll enjoy the film for what it is, the sequel and his music, there's never been a better singer in my opinion, and i agree his voice coming out of the mouth of larry parks, is absolutely magnificent.... however i won't idolize this man, or any other... well, other than Christ that is.....God bless.
@@stevesmith7843 There are myriad humans who are gifted with stunning talents. We admire and often stand in awe at their Gifts. Nothing to do with what kind of a person they are. .
@@oldgypsytap that can definitely true, i meant in this respect more due to it being a "based on a true story" movie, it's really more of a fiction, n now i have to watch it as such, far too much isn't as it actually was, it's a sweet fiction though.
My wife's late mother was given a musical box that played this tune for an anniversary present. It still brings tears to my wife's eyes. Her late parents were a very loving couple who met in very romantic circumstances, as two brothers married two sisters (but not on the same day). Her late aunt, from Greece met her uncle whilst he was serving in Germany just after the war. They had about 70 years together, having married in 1947. Sadly missed.
In fact the black community had nothing against him back in the day. He promoted the first all black play on Broadway and when he made a film with Can Calloway he insisted Calloway was treated equally.
What a voice. I would watch this movie with my father and grandmother. They used to say I was an old soul. I love it. They are both gone but the song goes on. Thank you for posting!
I call this the scene of faces; when you watch the entire film, you understand that Al Jolson's whole life was about singing, and performance... He had no other life, for what he did WAS his life... As the story here goes, Al had given up singing and show business to make his wife happy and just be at home... Here you see the faces of his wife, Manager, and parents, when dad finally gets Al to break his singing silence, and side a song for the anniversary... What they witness, is the extreme joy and happiness that Al displays, as he is again doing what his whole life was about ; singing. Like an intoxication, the magic of being who he was again surfaced, and he beamed with joy forgetting that he was no longer on stage singing just for a moment... The faces tell the story as the others realize how unhappy Al really was NOT singing, and being at home... Soon after, his wife left him so that Al was again free to go back to the stage, and live the life he was meant to as the Singer to live faces. I relate much to this story, and this part, for I have no other life then what I do in the Amusement Entertainment Business.... It is who I am, and even though I work crazy endless hours, if I didn't do what I do, then I would die... For I have no other life then what I do; nor would I want any other.
My mum loved him , she would play some of his stuff during the 60s and I was only a little girl but I was blown away by this man's vocie. Still am. Dont no what made me look tonight for his stuff. Glad I did tho. I wasn't even born when he was about but I feel moved by his vocie. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My Beloved Father had told us all about Asa Yolson. Later ee saw the movie starring Larry Parks snd Evelyn Keyes. And the unforgettable songs Like MAMMY and The Anniversary Song. I am now 89 years old but the voice, the lyrics remain in my memory as if it was Yesterday. Please release a few more of those songs.
One of the greatest films of all time about one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived , nothing like this will ever be seen again as the talent does not exist and no-one can write proper song anymore...songs with lyrics and music....
Listening now, sending to my friends on their anniversary, bringing tears to my eyes as I remember my wedding, and my beautiful parents who taught me to play music and sing. 😿💖
Seen this movie in 1991 when I just arrived in this country and I watched it more than seven times; one of my favorite movies. Anniversary Song's melody is as delicious as honey. Thanks for uploading.
Thank you Graeham, this was my parents song for their bridal dance.... My Dad had a beautiful voice; and for 37 of their wedding anniversaries- my Dad woke my Mum singing this song while delivering Mum breakfast on Bed... Sadly, the 38th was sung (by Dad) at her funeral. Thank you!
Hello amazing fan. Thank you for your beautiful comment. I’ve seen a whole lot of “RIP” attached to my name all over the internet. This is the reason I decided to debunk this false new of my demise. Late Ton Jones was the one who conceived the twist on Romeo and Juliet with composer, John Donald Robb. He died on the 11th of August of cancer in his home in Sharon. Please disregard all the false publications on the internet.I’m still alive and much healthy. Thank you beloved fan..
That is an audience that I would so love to be in. In 1981,my family went on holiday to North Wales and I fished with Andy McCluskeys young nephew and he said, you need to follow this group, they have just been signed up.. That was the weekend of King Charles wedding to Lady Di. I have loved them ever since. The Wirrals' finest❤️❤️😍😍
I love Al Jolson. I first heard his music when I was about 13 . You wouldn't think a 13 year old would enjoy Al Jolson. I watch the Jolson movies over & over again.

remember this as a little girl- now, as a senior citizen I am about to get married- this will be our wedding song
I HOPE ALL WENT WELL...I AM STILL WAITING FOR THAT DAY, AND I, TOO, AM NOW A SENIOR - TURNING 65 ON JULY 8TH...;)
Aaww that's beautiful X
So, five years later . . . I'm a senior who never married but this song would have been my first dance.
Congrats to you! It's never too late! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
No matter what the PC brigade think of All Jolson, you've got to admit he had a terrific voice!
You aint seen nothing yet
In fact the black community had nothing against him back in the day.
He promoted the first all black play on Broadway and when he made a film with Can Calloway he insisted Calloway was treated equally.
He had an awesome voice so many memories 😊
Everyone loved Al Jolson.
He was a first class entertainer but Larry parks was the talent that put jolson back on his feet Larry got nothing but grief
Evelyn Keyes was fantastic in the movie Such a underrated performance. As well as william demerest
What a voice. I would watch this movie with my father and grandmother. They used to say I was an old soul. I love it. They are both gone but the song goes on. Thank you for posting!
"our love was unaltered by time" -- great lyric
Just doesn't get better than that!
For I have no other life then what I do; nor would I want any other.
beautifull that was the waltz at my wedding
My mum loved him , she would play some of his stuff during the 60s and I was only a little girl but I was blown away by this man's vocie. Still am. Dont no what made me look tonight for his stuff. Glad I did tho. I wasn't even born when he was about but I feel moved by his vocie. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This song is a Master - Piece !It's so Beautiful both Lyrics and the Music!
This was the Love Song I heard for 25yrs .... I Adore it.
God Bless You!
I'm 69 and grew up loving that golden voice!
My Mom and Dad loved him, so we listened to him often 😊
All Jolson fans!💕
Wow he can sing lol I never seen this and came across this today crazy but I love it lol
One of the greatest films of all time about one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived , nothing like this will ever be seen again as the talent does not exist and no-one can write proper song anymore...songs with lyrics and music....
This is a really beautiful song, and I love rock!
Listening now, sending to my friends on their anniversary, bringing tears to my eyes as I remember my wedding, and my beautiful parents who taught me to play music and sing. 😿💖
Absolutely outstanding from Larry Parks
You do no Al Jolson was singing all the songs and Parks was just miming he did play a great part and I love this movie.
Yes I agree
Seen this movie in 1991 when I just arrived in this country and I watched it more than seven times; one of my favorite movies. Anniversary Song's melody is as delicious as honey. Thanks for uploading.
Originally it's musical piece written by Romanian Composer (Iosif Ivanovici) called {Waves of the Danube}.
You are wrong:
Originally this music was compose by Russian composer Max
Kyuss in 1909 with name "Waves of the Amure"
@@alexsh3393 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waves_of_the_Danube composed 1880, means 20 years before who you said its belongs to.
@@alexsh3393 ruclips.net/video/0KdcXJbgNyw/видео.html
@@alexsh3393 Max Kyuss amur waves is different piece but sounds similar to those who can't read notes or has musical ears.
beautiful song I remember when I was little I heard this song in the back ground and never forget it
My mum took us to see all the great musicals at the pictures-this was one of them.
Always makes me cry ... so lovely

Al jolson will be around thru his songs long after the critics are long gone

Love this song and the film. One of my all time favourites along with Angels with Dirty faces and One flew over. Jolson was a legend
I thought all those movies were masterpieces also
Watched this with my dad as a kid, and couldn't wait to own the VHS!
Thank you!
it doesn't get much better than this :)
Hope I'm not the only one still enjoying this in 2021.
No, I'm watching it now.....Feb. 2024
Thank you so much for posting this. I am so grateful to you.
I admired Larry so much, He is one man I wish I could go back in time and talk to. WHAT A PERFECT copy of Jolson’s voice!
Of course it was Jolson's voice that Larry Paks brillianty mimed to.
Beautiful and Larry Parkes is Al Jolson x
It’s 2020 and this song still gets me. 74 years from now I can guarantee people won’t be looking up rap music.
Watch Al Jolson sing (About a quarter to nine) great memories.
Wonderful. I searched for years for this song. Thank you for posting. So great to have such awesome music around.
I loved the film and the music from 11 years old. They didn't call him the world's best entertainer for nothing. It's beautiful brother or sister
🎵🎼❤️
To Owen, on what would have been our 45th Anniversary. I love you still and always will.
Thank you.
My Dad got me hooked on this song when I was a kid. I'm now 59 and still hum it every day...its the one song that's just stuck....
It's a pitty that T.Vs don't show movies like this anymore.
Oh my God such a beautiful song
One of my favourite songs, absolutely love Al❤️💙
hello, how are you doing? it is nice meeting you here.
I love Al Jolson. I first heard his music when I was about 13 . You wouldn't think a 13 year old would enjoy Al Jolson.
I watch the Jolson movies over & over again.
Remember watching this film with my grandad and dad twenty years ago when I was 13. Beautiful film and songs
