  • Wow, this is just outrageous! Boston Dynamics has released a new robot, and wow, they are really pushing boundaries. I've been watching their videos since high school, about a decade ago, and they're still at the forefront. In the field of robotics, nobody can beat them. Forget about Tesla, forget about OpenAI's robots... I'm telling you, they are the real experts in robotics. You know, I saw their channel page yesterday, and the first thing I saw was a farewell message, saying that the Atlas robot seemed to be retiring. I was completely shocked. I mean, such advanced technology retiring? Is it a financial issue? Or something else...
No, they hit you with a bombshell. Let me tell you, they're really good at marketing. In the morning, around... I forgot the time, they posted a historical review, saying, "Wow, Atlas is retiring. He's been with us for so long," and so on. Then, in the evening, at the time I'm recording this, they suddenly changed tune, saying, "No, our latest Atlas is here!" Of course, it's not the same as the previous one, but it's truly amazing. I'll talk about just how amazing it is in a moment!
So, let's take a look at a clip. Look at that Atlas, the most popular humanoid robot right now. The previous Atlas was a bit chubby, right? No? Well, now it's sleek, facing you directly, ready to compete. If you use a humanoid robot, so will I, but mine is sleeker and better. I can not only balance but also perform highly difficult balances. In the video, he starts by performing a squat-like movement and then stands up from a strange angle, as if his feet are bent 180 degrees in the opposite direction. It's intense!
The sensors on his upper and lower body, along with the motion planning, are incredible. And the way he looks, intentionally designed to resemble the Terminator, is creepy. His head can turn 180 degrees to look at you, which is chilling! So, once again, Boston Dynamics' technology won't be shaken for at least a decade, unless technology advances so rapidly that even such cutting-edge technology can be surpassed overnight.
But looking at their progress from the past until now, they've been researching humanoid robots for about a decade. Of course, they had earlier versions even before that. They've been testing them in various ways, like making them carry boxes, playing ice hockey to knock them down, intentionally making them fall or pushing them. It might seem cruel, but it's actually training them. Typically, robots use reinforcement learning to interact with the environment. Every action they take gets feedback, which could be a reward or a penalty. They're trying to make the robot continuously balance itself, which is the basic theory of robot control. So, from the shaky times of the past to the present, balance is not a joke to them. Walking? Unlike some competitors who might still be demonstrating stable mobility, they go beyond that. They can achieve angles that human bodies can't. Their body design allows for folding, which means different parts can move independently and need to be balanced separately. It's truly remarkable!
Unfortunately, the video clip is only about thirty seconds long, which is unsatisfying. But don't worry; knowing their style, they'll release a more complete video within a month. And then, you'll see comments below saying humanity is doomed if these robots are armed or something. But there's no need to worry excessively because even before reaching this level of advancement, they've been working on regulations. Just like there are regulations for drones now, controlling these robots in the future will require specific conditions and permissions. Understand?
So, I predict that in the future, there will be professional operators, like those who control drones now. And there will be specialists in controlling humanoid robots. Their purpose will be to make these robots do what humans can do but might be limited by environmental factors like temperature or odors, where human bodies can't go. This is where I have confidence in Boston Dynamics. If you look at their official RUclips channel, they mainly showcase applications in science, industry, and chemistry. So, their humanoid robots will likely be first deployed in these fields, which I believe is where robots can provide the most value to humanity.
But because this topic is so fascinating to me, I want to interact and discuss with everyone here. My question is, with the rapid development of humanoid robots, how many jobs do you think will be replaced by robots in the future? Option A: Less than 30%. Option B: 30% to 70%. Option C: More than 70%.
If there's anything else you'd like to discuss, feel free to leave a comment below. And don't forget to subscribe, like, and share my channel, so more people can join our conversation. Until next time, goodbye!
