Atlas has potential now to actually change the manufacturing world. Good Job Hyundai! Taking Intelligence (Boston Dynamics) and combining it with Korean efficiencies (Hyundai) is going to be industry changing. Might be time to invest.
I think the new Atlas head reminds me of the Robot on the remake of Lost in Space. Maybe they will include some kind of lighting on the open face if and when it speaks or reacts to humans. Color of the ring around the face could also help to understand what it is currently processing and it's intentions.
That was my first thought too; I'm imagining Atlas saying "Danger Will Robinson". Seriously though, I can't wait to see what this new version will be capable of...
I could imagine it being a screen that shows things like emojis (thumbs-up/checkmark/question-mark/etc.) to express emotion rather than a face which could make some people uncomfortable. Maybe even diagrams or text if needed.
Yes, free people from repetitive or dangerous tasks. There are enough who still work on assembly lines or destroy their backs by carrying heavy loads. All of these can take on higher value tasks, which in turn increases overall labor productivity@@Matx5901
Full automation is just around the corner. Many typical warehouse jobs WILL be lost, but with more automation comes more maintenance. As someone working in the field, to anyone reading this PLEASE upskill and learn some basic mechanical/electrical skills, that's all you need to get started in maintenance. It's very rewarding, you will get to work on this type of new tech being brought into warehouses and will have lots of job security, be diligent everyone.
A friend of mine is learning how to fix cars. I wonder if he could learn how to fix robots in the future. Or if robots would eventually be helping him.
This is the most common argument, one which I've used myself in the past, but the main flaw is HOW MANY jobs it will replace. If you have one robot replace 2-4 humans (since it can run all 3 shifts with no break or weekends), but only need 1 technician to service, say, 50 of them, you're removing 100 to 400 factory workers, and hiring one robot technician. It just doesn't balance out.
@@darksunrise957 that's because you are looking at this too narrowly. these type of efficiencies can open new up new businesses and ideas that were previously unprofitable or unfeasible.
@darksunrise957 This so called problem has existed since the start of the industrial revolution. There are always jobs for those who want to work. We can not find young people willing to work. I have seen a least 150 come and go through our gates ( chemical plant) in 3 years.
The new robot looks familiar. I hope they make a big red one and the chocolate one. And also if they have a chance to make the world biggest robot that has 4 legs
The previous version of atlas looked so cool. obviously how cool it looks is not the main factor. The new one looks really cool too. and I'm sure with the purely electrical actuators, It will be much more reliable, especially as they improve on the design. I'm sure it will probably be pretty modular, like the spot. I'm sure there will also be computer modules to extend it computational capabilities too.
I wouldnt say far however due to it being all electric it will be quieter and last for longer due to not needing to power pumps constantly. regardless they will maybe make it so the thing can last 10-15 mins then have a 1 minute battery change. It would actually be more work then a human in those 10-15 mins so thats a plus. and lets say you cycle them.
Truly incredible technology! Every year we get closer and closer to terminator/ matrix level tech! While this new atlas seems like an amazing improvement so far, the fact that it has the same name is confusing. Give it a brand new name, or at least a 2.0 or 3.0 attached to it so the public isn't confused. Maybe Morpheus or Kalvis could be better to go with mythology names.
This robot should be done with his performance for his crafters. Now that his experience is concluded the memory is saved for further robot technology. Added to their own! Just like the borg
even for 10-15 minutes thats more then enough to do a large task. and since the thing wont stop to chat or do anything but the given task it would do more than what a human would do in that time period. AND if they make it so the robot takes 1-2 mins to replace its battery then that would be a game changer. but limit its work range.
Once they implement toes, THEN the world will be shocked. Toes are a huge contributor to mobility in humans. I wonder how they'd implement them for this form factor.
