This is great information for people interested in skating. I’ve stressed to adults many times the importance of protective equipment if they want to try or get back into skating. It can be the difference between getting right back up and trying again or going home with a bruised tailbone and pride and the skates fade into obscurity in the closet. I’ve watched a grown man hit the floor like a ton of bricks that said he was a great skater as a kid. I literally watched his enthusiasm leave his body and walk out the door. He came in ego trippin and left hurt badly. You might be much heavier, and rusty now, it happens lol. Adults need to keep this in mind. Kids are much lighter and hit the ground differently but should still wear some gear when at least learning. I grew up in times where wearing protective gear was stigmatized but there is no shame in being smart. I don’t always wear it as I have improved and fall better but I have no problem putting it on to learn new techniques. Especially wrist guards and hip and tailbone protection. One can get well protected head to toe for less $100. It cheap insurance just get it. And progress.
Making the decision to start skating again after 30 plus years has been challenging, therapeutic, and fun. I cannot believe the inches and pounds that are coming off, so I plan to hang in there. Thanks for the tips. I watch your videos often. Thanks!
Informative, relaxed and, quite frankly, hilarious. Really made me laugh whilst teaching me some great tips. I’ve been skating twice now, aged 49, and I’m still petrified but doing me best to push through. In those moments when I manage to get a good rhythm going and smooth movement, I feel such joy from the freedom of movement. I shall conquer my fear and get skating!
Another tip is buying insoles. A good recommendation are the fp insoles for high impact sports like skateboarding or roller skating because you might feel the impact of the ground your skating on especially rough surfaces. You might have to cutdown the toe area of the insole for snug comfy fit in your boot. Thank you for the video I still struggle with balancing a bit so your tips are a big help.
Hallo Katie, first of all your videos are great. I want to learn Roller Skate again after 30 jears. But im not unsportiv. I do cycling with racecycle. I have no fear but a lot respect to learn it again. I have a very good trick to push when i am getting forward. I put my right feet on the too stop. Then i gets little push on my right feet. And i can go forward. Also when i stay on rollers to keep my balance, i put one foot on the toestop. It help me very good. It gives me confidence. My next lesson is to skate backwards. You are right, to learn rollerskating is a journey, but a very nice beautiful journey.
I'm seeing protective shorts being used on their own, without any attempt do disguise them. Specially in skateparks (where danger is greater even for the pros), but I love seeing them used without shame. In junior international ice figure skating competitions there's one guy who puts padding over one of his hips, I would use too (on both, and in the middle too, heehee).
My skates are on their way here and I'm binging all your video's like crazy. Ive always dreamt of rollerskating but never dared cause I am very plus sized.. But I got inspired cause I saw a few plussize ladies skate and thought.. Why the hell not. With all these drills and baby steps I should be able to learn too! I feel so encouraged and motivated by your video's! I hope I'm gonna love it just as much as you do🥰
Oh this is a lovely comment. Sounds like you’re going to do fabulous with all your research. Take your time, lock in the fundamentals and most importantly, have fun! 💕⭐️😎🛼
I've been binge watching your beginner videos since I found your channel. I will be 56 this year, and want to try skating again. I used to skate when I was a kid, but haven't in decades. Unfortunately, I am limited on the type of skates I have access to and can afford. So I became concerned after watching your video on picking the right skates! You literally showed the exact skate I ordered (except the color) as the very ones to avoid! I haven't received them yet, but until I am able to see if I can even do this again, it's all I'll have until I can invest in better ones. I want to skate so badly, and I am so happy I found your videos to help me prepare for what's ahead. I will be starting off skating in my house and will be wearing all the gear! 😃
So glad you’ve come back to skating. Just make sure to check the skates over regularly for signs of cracks or failure and also … have lots of fun xx ⭐️💕🛼
The 2 things I wear skating inside are wrist guards and padded snowboard shorts, over stretchy leggings. I am not confident enough to go outside. Then it’s elbow, knee pads, and helmet too.
Thank you for making these videos and making me feel less than a plonker haha do you recommend any padded shorts in specific? I have bad hips anyway so should def wear them even though they will look like I'm trying to be kim k... 😂💅
I have two pair. One has much thicker padding vs another that has more dense and lower profile but under some good loose fitting shorts or pants you can’t tell I have them on. Even then who cares what someone thinks especially if they’re just sitting on their butt watching 😂. A “judge” of someone trying to progress in skating has bigger problems.
I haven’t had a lot of experience with myself but the ones recommended for derby are often going to be the more heavily padded option as those skaters are hardcore!
I'm practicing by supporting myself lightly holding a small rolling laundry cart (36" high skating aid) in front of me for stability until I get my "skating feet". I'm not so wobbly and strides are improving. Good idea or not? Why or why not?
If it’s giving you confidence it’s good. My only worry would be similar to the skater aid if you wobble and start to fall backwards don’t grab the cart. You could hit your head. ⭐️💕🛼 🤕
Can someone help me please? I just got my first pair of skates :D!!! I got ones with metal bearings and nuts, but not with a metal plate. Does having a plastic plate make it more difficult to skate, or does it just mean my skates won't last as long?
Plastic plates are fine to start with. They’re more likely to flex and you’ll loose some of the momentum in the flex of the plate. Plastic trucks are not ok for adults and they can fail under the weight of an adult.
I feel like i tend to put too much pressure on my front trucks and toes. It ends up making my feet sore in that area 🤔 i also think im tensing my feet from fear too! 😅
It’s really common to clench your toes inside your skates. Relax your feet. This can give you foot cramp and make it hard to control your to edge. Weight towards the front truck is perfect placement, give it time you should start to relax. You could try a thin insole if you’re finding the sole hard.
It’s unusual for the weight to go on the back trucks when skating crossovers. I have a few videos on crossovers forwards and backwards they might help clarify?
I have such bad anxiety when it comes to skating and it started about a year ago even tho I’ve skated for abt 5 I want to learn new things but my anxiety is preventing me from doing so it’s so annoying and saddening :(
Working on your basic fundamentals can help to build your confidence and balance. Take your time and wearing padding can really help too. Most importantly have fun and everything else will come in time. xx
There are adult size skater aids. Before you go out and buy one make sure the arena you are going to allows people to bring their own. The arenas in this area of the U.S. don't. However, they will rent you one. I thought I had the confidence to start with quads but it is so different from ice skating. These wheels definitely have a mind of their own. It's a challenge at this point. I'm not really getting it.
I love my protective shorts. It looks like I'm wearing a diaper, when I wear it as is, but I wear them with a skirt over, so it's more like having a booty
Thank you for normalizing the importance of wearing safety gear while skating!

Children just seem to bounce don’t they. Us adults have a lot further to fall. 🤕 I feel naked without my pads outside! 😂 💕💕💕💕

Have lots of fun xx 🛼⭐️💕
I really should do more of these exercises so I could gain confidence in skating. Thank you, Skatie!
It’s amazing how well the drills and moves help with overall skating.
Thank you. These are very good recommendations. Again, many thanks.
Thank you x🛼⭐️💕
Great advice Katie, it’s the number 1 thing holding me back, the fear of falling and being super wobbly on my skates.
It’s so normal to feel like that. Work on your balance and posture. Video yourself often too to check your form. This really helps.

I’m usually the only one wearing protective gear in the rink, thanks for making me feel better about it.
If it makes you feel comfortable, then do it! A good friend of mine, who is a radiographer, always wears her wrist guards when she skates! 🦴 🩻

They’re a really nice skate. I don’t skate in them regularly as I prefer my Risports but I was so impressed by them

Where is the best place for plus sized girls knee pads please? And all the other protective gear?
If you have a local skate shop that would be a great option as nothing is better than trying them on etc. I know the 187’s have lots of size options.

I takes time and practice. At least 3 times a week. It has taken me about 2 1/2 months to get at least mostly comfortable 😂
Practice is definitely key. Work on balance and posture and things will slowly start to feel more natural.
I got it bad. I can roll around on the carpet wearing my inlines but outside is another scary story.
