    I'd like to see a "finding backpacking gear in unexpected places" video. Harbor freight, Hardware stores, grocery stores, a fabric shop and so on. It would be a great way to talk budget / last minute gear as well as go into how a lot of the tiny garage grown gear companies got started.

      Harbor Freight's little $3 LED flashlights are awesome. I bought a bunch and gave them to all the kids in my scout troop who never bring a flashlight camping.

    15:56 there’s a new toxic lookalike in the west. An experienced elder morel forager died in missoula. The deaths in Bozeman were due to undercooking & irresponsible people, BUT the missoula incident was a lookalike. I’m out until we have guidance on the difference. Do a google search for National Forests in your state. See if any have a Wilderness. Google that wilderness for backpacking. The National Forest web site has a plethora of general information how these topics.
      For instance I live in Washington state. I took a road atlas and I chose Ohio. Never been to that state. They have Wayne National Forest. So I googled Wayne National Forest and one of the items that had a hyper link to was hiking. Clicked on that and I found Wildcat Hollow trail 17.5 miles for backpacking. Less than 5 minutes I already have a destination to look into. Call the Athens District ranger station will help gather more information about the trail. This also gives me something to google which 10 seconds later I had a list of sites that had information including Alltrails.
      3 things to keep in mind. Difficulty, mileage, and weather. If you're new to backpacking keep your difficulty low and mileage low (4-6 miles) until you're ready to try more challenging terrain and mileage. Don't jump from 4 to 15 miles. Try 4 then maybe 8 then 12 miles and so on. Weather is something that can't be controlled so you need to learn how to deal with inclement weather. Basically timing is one way of dealing with it. If you can time the weather so it is coming in when you are back at the trailhead is one way of dealing with it but still get out (may not be out as long as you like but you got out). At the same time not have to deal with it.

    I'm not sure Darwin was thinking, "Hey guys, let's make a really cute pot," but I guess that's what he got 😂 I like that pot because of the wooden handle on the lid. I have a Toakes 750ml, and I'm always forgetting to pull that teeny little tab on the lid before I boil my water, so the wooden one would be helpful. I like the bail too, I do occasionally cook over a fire.

    Mushroom picking tip: cut off the base of the stem with dirt before you bag it up, so you don't get dirt all over your morels! It's probably best practice to just cut/pinch the stem at ground level to pick it, leaving the base in place, but long-term studies haven't really shown one method to be better than the other at this point (that I'm aware of). Nice find, they're my favorite.

    • @kellyrhoads5629
      @kellyrhoads5629 6 месяцев назад +2

      Agree. Once that dirt or sand gets in the mushroom cap it’s very difficult to clean it out and you will be eating the grit. Great to find that mushroom!

    • @Baysha1000
      @Baysha1000 6 месяцев назад +5

      Per our mycologists, it's best practice to pick the whole mushroom including the base because in many mushrooms (such as Amanitas) the main features for distinguishing between an edible and poisonous species are on the base (it probably doesn't matter in morels though). Source: we Czechs are probably the most passionate mushroom foragers in the world, it's pretty much a national sport - and we forage an insane variety of species including several Amanitas (very tasty!) so articles by mycologists are pretty much a constant presence in the media during summer and fall.
      Agree with cleaning off the dirt right away, that's gonna be impossible to get off after it's been carried around for two days.

    Fantastic video! The UL sandals are amazing for the weight, don't use them for water crossings, just for camp or for mid day stops to air out your feet. The zero pump however doesn't have enough air pressure to fully inflate an air mattress if you like it firm, so you have to add a few breaths in. The tiny2x air pump solves that, and also has a long lasting lantern.

    It should be noted that the weight on the Flextail Zero pump does NOT include either the battery or valve adapter. They've completely plastered the marketing material with the 1.2oz (35g) weight despite only be able to achieve that as little more that a paperweight in your pack lol. I believe it's about the same weight as their tiny pump x (model with out the lantern) by the time it's got a battery in it. Albeit with a more convenient form factor, but a much higher price tag.

    Great Video! This is one of my favorite forests in Washington. :) Our family does a lot of foraging. When collecting morels, you always want to slice them off from the base. Due to all of their "brainy" texture any sand or dirt still attached will all end up in all the deep creases that are near impossible to clean out. Best to alway just do a clean slice from the base so you aren't shaking in all the dirt and bugs with the mushrooms before you get home. Hope you had a chance to enjoy it though! They are delicious!

    My boyfriend and I literally drove around the burns in our area looking for morels. Didn't find any. Then we got to our established campsite for the night and I looked down while leveling our camper and my partner had stepped on a morel and there was one more just chillin beside the smooshed one waiting to be picked 😂

    OK. I watch this channel to have fun. Miranda is fun. Rainer is an incredible shooter and editor. You two make a good team. My backpacking days are in the past, motorcycles and motorcycle camping are my jam. Thanks for making me smile. And since I'm a guy I love flashlights. I bought one in this film. I have many. I like stuff that blows up too. I'm a guy.

      My favorite bit of kit is a pair of comfy crocs to change into when my feet need a break and as camp shoes. They work great with neoprene socks for warmth and a waterproof sock layer in snow or cold! Ha. Heavy as heck but they feel like the best thing in the world after a day on your feet.

    The RovyVon light is definitely a winner. There is a little learning curve with the button combinations to turn it on and cycle through the modes, but it's a solid piece of gear in my kit.
    I tried to like the Mayfly sandals, but the lack of real traction was a deal breaker for me.
    I have one of those Brautigam spoons (not the spork) on my GGG wishlist. I've already got a decent spoon, but if family members are interested in getting me a gift, they can get me one of those.
    I've tried those toothpaste tabs and they are not for me. I love the concept, but my teeth didn't feel clean after using them. I also use a folding travel toothbrush that I like better than those weird ones from GGG.

      As others have stated, that pot was designed and produced by Darwin of Darwin on the Trail. He had function in mind, not cuteness, but it might not fit your use case.

    As another very sweaty human being, I swear by packs with ventilation. I'm sure you know that they make packs with built in ventilation, which is usually mesh and far more breathable than the plastic one. But I will say devices like that are great because they open. Up so many more possibilities for packs.

    My first run with mayflies I didn't enjoy them just found them to not have enough between me and the ground. On my second run I modified them by cutting out a piece of craft foam and adhering that as an insole if you would. It's made them incredibly comfortable and they are still a ton lighter than my zero sandals.

    This was a fun video!!! I love browsing the funky gear at GGG. It's fun to see what people have come up with. I also love toothpaste tabs but I generally avoid toothpaste that doesn't have fluoride. I was very tempted by the kettle pot until I remembered that I actually already have one. This is the problem with being a gear junkie!!! The flashlight though.... Although my nitcore isn't that much heavier. I'd love to see another video like this!
