This, Souvernir De Florence and Francesca Da Rimini are sheer murder for string players. Romeo & Juliet and Symphony 6 are cakewalks compared to Manfred.
This is arguably one of Tchaikovsky's supreme achievements, and also one of his most time-and-labour-consuming works. But it's unbelievably unpopular. Even Tchaikovsky himself argued that, if possible, he would like to destroyed the 2nd, the 3rd, and the 4th movement. Finally he changed his mind, but predicted that the symphony wouldn't be performed too frequently.
I don't understand him wanting to destroy the 2nd movement, it's so ethereal, colorful and whimsical. It nicely transitions to a gorgeous melody in the middle section that eventually has the 1st mvmt's main motif counterpointing it. The other 2 mvmts are good too. The fourth is a little over-the-top but that's how Peter rolls.
@@whocares_bear If you are nine days away from death do you expect yourself to write good music? Tchiskovsky was extremely depressed, angry, and literally dying. Don't be so hard on him because his music isn't as good as you want it to be.
Absurd that this symphony is as unpopular and looked down upon as it is, by critics, audiences, and Tchaikovsky himself. This is without question one of his finest pieces, and alongside his last symphonies (4, 5 and 6) amongst the greatest ever in the symphonic literature.
I don't get why people hate this piece so much, *especially* the 4th movement. Is it a wild, chaotic ride that frequently surprises and jostles you around? Yes. And that's exactly what makes it great.
O wow! Thanks heaps for posting the score! One of my favourite works! Unfortunately, some tool (Yevgeny Svetlanov, I think) thought he could improve on Tchaikovsky by rewriting the ending! At the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concert on Aug 19 2022, they played that alternative ending instead of the one Tchaikovsky composed! I've sent then a stinking letter over thus act of musical vandalism!
A wonderful work, full of rich orchestration and drama. Punctuated with a deftness of touch, particularly in the second movement, which typifies the genius of one of Russia’s greatest artists! Not played nearly enough in my opinion. ❤

Symphony 4.5:
Tchaikovsky may be one of the technically hardest composers for violins and violas to play, and this is his most string-murderous piece yet.

This symphony is too unpopular, but it is actually as good as the No.6

Never cared for his 6th. Too much doom & gloom. Overdramatic, melodramatic, maudlin and the last movement is just "ugh!".
