Welcome to our most detailed drainage solution tutorial yet! If you're battling with waterlogged lawns or have a playset that's more water feature than fun zone, you've come to the right place. In this video, we tackle a massive 350-foot French drain installation, fully equipped with an outdoor sump pump system, designed to transform soggy yards into dry, usable spaces.
hy This Video is a Must-Watch:
We don't just show you the finished product; we take you through every step of the process. From the initial layout to the final backfill, you'll see every connection and learn why each decision is crucial for creating a reliable, efficient drainage system. Whether you're a homeowner looking to DIY, a seasoned contractor, or a curious viewer, this video offers valuable insights into professional-grade drainage solutions.
Project Overview:
Our journey begins with addressing a significant drainage problem between two houses, beneath a child's swing set, where water has turned the yard into a persistent puddle. Utilizing the strongest yard drain pipes on the market, our installation dives deep, ensuring the system remains shallow enough to avoid interference yet effective enough to handle large volumes of water from heavy Michigan rains.
Installation Highlights:
Catch Basin Integration: We strategically place catch basins where water pools the most, ensuring effective capture and rerouting of surface water.
Robust Piping: Learn why we choose high-octane, armor-wrapped pipes capable of withstanding pressure from above, whether it's a child running overhead or a lawnmower in action.
Outdoor Sump Pump Setup: Our 'Screaming Demon' sump system with an added four-foot chamber is showcased, demonstrating how to manage the collected water and efficiently discharge it away from the property.
Detail-Oriented Execution: From the placement of non-woven geo-textile fabric to ensure optimal filtration to adjusting pipe depth for perfect slope, every detail is covered to guarantee long-lasting results.
Technical Insights:
Pipe Selection and Installation: Discover why mixing pipe sizes and types can enhance system functionality and how we prevent tree roots and soil from clogging the system.
Ensuring Longevity: We share techniques for protecting the system against freezing and blockages, crucial for maintaining functionality in northern climates.
Tailored Solutions: Every yard is different. We adjust our methods to meet the specific needs of the terrain and the homeowner's expectations, ensuring each installation is a perfect fit.
Final Thoughts:
This video isn't just about laying pipe;
it’s about crafting a tailored solution that addresses specific landscaping challenges. You'll see how we handle complications like navigating around existing structures and optimizing for varying soil types. Moreover, we discuss how proper grading, backfilling, and even seeding play roles in the system's integration and effectiveness.
Learn and Apply:
For the DIYers and young contractors out there, this video is a goldmine of information. You'll get tips on how to choose the right materials, the importance of precise depth and slope, and how to ensure your system can handle the local climate challenges. We detail every aspect of the system, from underground routing to surface treatment, providing a comprehensive guide that leaves no stone unturned.

I have a 75’ quad pack of the blue pipe to a dual full size bad seed. That has been amazing for the past 3 years.
This is an amazing system. FDM sets the standard and raises the bar every time
Thank you
Doing a massive pump line with French drain in the same trench to get rid of a massive pond in a clients back yard. Thanks to your help next week we’ll be making another client happy.
Loved the footage at the end, that was a lot of water!
very high capacity system good job
Great work like always!
That is a ton of work! It would be really nice to see it in a rainstorm to see the before and after.

Love these videos!! Their so satisfying👍🏼
Also is it true, that a French Drains can only captured water 3 feet away on each side?
It all depends on the soil type. The more permeable the soil, the farther you can reach out and obtain water.
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN awesome! Thanks! 👍🏼
I have a job with multiple problem areas. Walk out basement with water issues.
Not a problem. Here's a walk-out basement.

Just curious - why do you have to terminate the solid pipe into the screamin demon? Why not just end it near it like the perf pipe?
You can do that. My only concern is the perforated has groundwater in it, and that is as clean as a mountain stream. The solid pipe could have tree buds or tree seeds that float through the system, and the pump can suck those up and discharge them with no problem. See where I'm going with this? You don't want to fill all your stone voids with tree buds and tree seeds.
What is the most chamber you’ve added to an outside sump system?
Are there any drawbacks extending the chamber beyond what you did here?
Thank you for all your videos!
60 ft
It's highly unusual. Our most common practice is to add 3 to 4 feet.
Isn’t that wood post for the outlet going to rot out quicker now that it’s basically in a sump pit?. Was there not enough slope just to run a line to the street instead of having the sump pump?
It's not my first rodeo, bud.
Is there a propensity for the grass on top of the drain to brown more easily in the direct sun? meaning you need to water those areas more frequently, or more deeply? I would imagine the grass/dirt in that area heats up more quickly because of all that stone close to the surface, no?
Our systems work 365 days a year. They do not take a minute off. During a drought, you're going to need to water, but my customers tell me they welcome that after having a flooded yard.
How come on the discharge line you go from 1.5" up to a 3" for the down-slope? Is there a downside to keeping the discharge 1.5" the entire discharge run?
The larger pipe gives the water less chance to freeze in winter. The gravity drain helps empty the pipe when not in use.
Do you see how much water is coming out of a 3-inch line? Imagine if it did not disperse in the area of a 3-inch pipe. A 1 1/2-inch discharge would shoot into the street like it was coming out of a water cannon.
Do you make an adapter that will connect your blue pipe to my 2’ culvert pipe ? I want to dump a French drain system using your parts into an existing dry well. I need to connect underground into the wall of the catch basin culvert pipe. Same way you tap the street drains in your videos.
Got a better idea ?
Just use a 5-inch hole saw.
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN
Ok that gets me into the culvert pipe but it’s an area where golf carts and mowers will stress the ground so I didn’t want it to pull out. I will try it thx! Is it Ok to run the slotted pipe into the culvert or should I convert to standard pipe just before entering ?
Hi, I just received my Micro bad seed and 100 ft of High Octane. I plan on having a similar but smaller setup. I will have 60 ft of pipe on my fence with a slope but my fence ends 50 ft before it hits the sidewalk and 70 before the street. How would you recommend continuing the discharge line to the sidewalk or street? It a straight shot, only grass and near the property line.
Thanks
If you have slope to the street, we just drop it right there, where the fence ends, and we allow it to run to the street through the green
belt.

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN There is little to no slope and the fence ends right at the midpoint of the house. I'm considering running 3-4 inch PVC under ground to the sidewalk with a popup or to the street and cut the curb if the town will let me. Any other options?
Is that drainage system available anywhere in the U.S.?

Is that discharge hitting some stone? I didn't catch it.
No, it's not a foundation drain that runs 365 days a year. It only runs when it rains.
What does this size project typically cost a homeowner?
20k
Why not discharge right onto the concrete? Looks like now you’ll have erosion issues
Snowplows will pile snow at the curb and damage the system. Also, a street sweeper will damage it too. I've lived a lifetime, buddy, and I know all the failure modes.
I'm sure the homeowner could get a splash block to catch the discharge and direct it over the curb if that gets to be a problem, or get a bag of concrete to do something custom if that doesn't work.
Too bad no storm drains nearby. That road is going to be wet all the time.
It only runs when it rains. It is NOT a foundation drain around a basement.
