Hi Davies Media Design. Thanks for this tutorial. I have used it to create a 20 pages document, totalling about 280 layers, using the latest GIMP (2.10.18). However, when i do export as PDF and tick "layer as pages", then the PDF I obtain contains 280 pages, as I there were no layer Groups. Do you know if there is a feature that has been suppressed, or does it require a plugin? I hope you can answer that. Thanks
I have GIMP 2.10.14 and when I do what you say it creates a PDF File with each and every layer (sublayer) as separate page. Each sublayer on its own PDF page.
@@WongAndrew_ I had to go around it. I had to copy the file and then merge all the individual layers together. That way I still have an editable copy and then the one to print off of.
Same here using GIMP 2.10.18. I have close to 280 layers and there is no way I can merge each layer individually. Has anyone been able to make it work as shown in the video?
This didn't work for me. I figured it was my version, so I d/l gimp 2.10.14 and then I got a pdf with 235 pages instead of 13. I had to make a double and merge all the layers down to fake it. :(
@@WongAndrew_ I pressed ctrl+D to create a duplicate of my project, and then starting at the top, used the menus to "merge down" all the layers for each page until each page was only one layer. then it finally worked. kindof a pain in the ass :(
For every one having the issue of the export producing every single layer, this is the simplest solution I have come up with. First, make a copy of your XCF file, so you have it to make any amendments you need to at a later date. Open your copy and only make your first page (Layer Group) visible. Right click that group and select "Merge Visible Layers". I did not change any of the setting on this and just clicked "Merge". This will condense all the layers in that group into one. Then hide that layer and make the next Layer Group visible and repeat that for all the Layer Groups you have. Once you have done this, export to PDF as per the video. I hope this helps someone and saves you the two hours I lost.
Thanks Davies Media Design for this awesome tutorial. After following the tutorial to the end, I was unable to successfully export the work into 3 pages from the group layers. Instead, the individual layers in each group layer was exported instead. What should I do to resolve this issue ? What part I'm I missing to glue the separate layers in one group to become one page upon exporting?
@@janguitar8499 I believe that it is the version of gimp that does not provide that function of layers to pdf and when having to merge the layers in gimp they become images and lose quality in the pdf when zooming .... :(
Excellent. Now that the groups have been implemented it would be interesting to have an option to select several layers at once. Thank you so much for the videos.
If you want to move several layers at once, you click next to the Eye and you'll see a link/chain come up, select the ones you want to move all at the same time and then move them. They'll all move together. Then you just unlink them.
Thanks for the video. I tried doing the exact same step but instead of rendering each Layer Group as a pages it renders each separate layer as individual page. Can you help me out with this? One solution is I merge all layers and then import as pdf but that defeats the purpose of the feature. Any workaround?
Hi, when I hit "export as" button I can not see layers as multiple pages. Is there an option to enable it? My version of GIMP is 2.8.22. I'm running macOS.
I have exactly the same problem.. I wanted to edit a 3 page document, but I can only export it as 1 page without the other 2 pages.. Even tho there are 3 layers.. Pretty annoying they removed the option or I am not sure what else to do..
I definitely recommend upgrading to the latest version of GIMP and then rewatching this tutorial. It may not work with older versions of GIMP - I am not entirely sure. But I always recommend using the latest GIMP version.
@@DaviesMediaDesign Funny thing is that you say "it might not work with older versions of GIMP", but we were trying it in a newer version then you in the video :D So my question is, why did they removed this function in GIMP 2.8.x? I will try to upgrade to the newest version, but I kinda didn't like the new "photoshopy" modern look it had. That's why I downloaded an older version with the good old look..
@@surtep1542 By "older versions" I certainly meant anything older than GIMP 2.10 (i.e. GIMP 2.8.x as you mentioned). I think this feature was not around in GIMP 2.8, though I could be wrong (I discovered this feature in GIMP 2.10). If the look of your GIMP is the only thing holding you back from updating, I certainly recommend checking out the beginning of my 2 hour GIMP 2.10 basics video where I go over how to change the look and color of your GIMP User Interface so that it matches the look in older versions.
as others here in the comments I tried all possiible combinations to save as PDF in separate pages from layer groups, only solution available is to merge down the content in each layer group (but it is no longer editable) if I have one group it saves it correctly in one page, if I have more than one group it just creates as many pages as the layers I wonder how Davies actually managed to do it as shown in the video, any help is much appreciated, thanks PS I am running GIMP 2.10.24 on Windows 10
1. Buddy, your Davies Media Design logo can't be fully saved as an image from your site. All we can get is the DAVIES outline. Are you sure it's not an image + text for 'Media' and 'Design' ? 2. 19:10 Checking "Layers As Pages" just puts each layer into its own separate page. This is wrong. 3. When I export, all I get is the topmost page. I don't get the underlying pages because the export command has no option for restricting the layers in a page to only those in the same layer-group. You need to do more work on this. Slow down a bit on the tricky bits.
I have multiple jpeg pages completed can you advise me how to convert these into a group layer and export it as a pdf file. I have a 31 page children's book I designed with text in Gimp. Linda
Thanks very much for this, Michael. I have a couple of questions about this, which I hope you will answer. 1. I presume that, since there are no photos in the the design, the preferred way of doing this would be in a vector-based programme. Is that correct? 2. Instead of clicking on a logo (e.g., the GIMP logo), and then going Edit - Copy, followed by Edit-Paste, can one simply select the logo and drag it onto the design page? Or, at the very least, using Control/Command C, and then Control/Command V? Thank you.
Thanks for the comment and the questions! I think whether or not a vector-based program is best for your project will depend on what elements are going into your project. GIMP is always great for photo editing and simple design, but if you want to make more crisp graphics that are also scalable in either direction (up or down) without losing quality at a later date (or even during your project), then you might want to create vector objects in a vector-based program. To answer your second question, you can drag the GIMP logo file directly from your file folder into your composition to save a step. In my experience, you cannot hit ctrl+c on your keyboard to successfully copy an image from one composition to another. However, you can do that for layers within a single project. Thanks again!
How did you come up with 2550 x 3300 as the dimensions? For example, if I want to design a book with a 9" x 12" cover, how do I determine what dimensions to use for the gimp canvas?
Just change the units to inches, then set your resolution to whatever you want (if you are printing, go with 300 ppi). GIMP will automatically convert the image to pixels while you work because you are on a computer and computers use pixels. But you can set the units for yours guides to inches as well so as not to get confused. I hope that helps.
Hello I hope you can help, I followed everything but the pdf comes out all over the place. The only difference I can think of is that I have a layer mask to create a border in each layer group but I don't know if its that because when I export as a single page the document looks right but as soon as I have the second page goes all over the place :( I am so frustrated. Please help if you can. I am using GIMP 2.10
