Your skirt is lovely. The word you were looking for is using a “Rotary Cutter”. It is used with a self healing cutting mat and is used a lot in quilting with rulers but is very handy for cutting out fashion wear as well.

Sarah, You are always an inspiration to watch. Thank you! I too have been sewing Sew Liberated patterns, but have never sewn the Hinterland Dress. I have now cut one out and am sewing it up today! Always enjoy your musings. Jenn

Sarah, I go to a thrift store or donation center called Goodwill. I buy used fabric. I made my first Estuary skirt from curtain panels, cotton/linen blend. It came out great! I also had enough to make a peplum top out of the Hinterland bodice and about 8”of the skirt of the pattern, that also came out lovely (not to be worn together). It was a good way to test the patterns. You have inspired me to start my day making socks, then I move on to my sewing later in the day. I am in Northeastern USA in Maine with similar climate as you. I love your pattern reviews for knitting. Thank you!

Estuary skirt looks lovely and viscose gives a lovely drape and movement. Your shawl looks like a bandana for Bobbi, 😂but I guess it’s tension piece? Although I think Bobbi would look sweet matching you! I asked a question yesterday about which short rows you do on your socks and you answered it today in your chatting part, so no need to answer on friday, thank you. It’s hot and sunny here in the uk now, and like you I’m not keen on it being too hot but this week I’m on holiday at the seaside and it’s perfect as I love to swim in the sea, and there is always a breeze by the sea. I wanted to thank you for doing all these daily episodes I love to have a chat with you each day but I also know it takes much more time than the length of the episode and you need your knitting time! But it is a heart jumping part of my day - and I expect for many others. Btw in English we say cut for all ways of doing but add with scissors or a rotary cutter, I do lots of sewing and do use a rotary cutter but as I have a very good pair of scissors, I’m happier using them, especially for thicker fabric. But as you often say, we all find the way that suits us, so no wrong or right way. ❤

Thank you for your podcasts. They are wonderful. I wonder if you may like the Meadow Skirt pattern from Twig and Tale. Pattern comes in several lengths and several optional extras, plus video support for the pattern. All their patterns are lovely.

Dear Sarah, the word is the same -cut- but the method what is different. You can cut with scissors and you can also cut with a rotary cutter and a mat ( which is much more precise). I have sewed some quilts and project bags, but you have inspired me to start sewing my own clothes now. ❤

Sarah, the best way I know to get a straight cut in fabric is to Pull a Thread to get a Straight Cut in Fabric, if you look it up on youtube there will be videos to show you how, than you don't need to buy any other tools, but it does take patients.

I sometimes also feel nervous to sew with expensive fabric. It’s easier with expensive yarn because you can always rip it back but once the fabric is cut there is no returning. Good idea to add those to folds to the waist band - I think that’s the type of thing people would only notice if you pointed it out to them

I have the same problem with expensive fabrics. It's worse with sewing, because if a knitted garment doesn't fit correctly, at least you can frog it and reuse the yarn.
My daughter loves to buy vintage bed sheets at the thrift store to sew into skirts and dresses. That's super affordable fabric!

I like the new skirt a lot. Also the length. If it is too long, you cannot wear it on your bike ride. Many greetings Heidi ❤ good luck to the dutch soccer team !

When I started to knit, I used 100% cotton to knit dishcloths until I was satisfied with my results. I bought some lovely merino wool for scarf and gloves next. It depended on the colours the textures and how the yarn felt to me. I don't enjoy the knit if the yarn is not heart jumping to me Sarah😊

Sarah, the way you explain how you learn by doing and making mistakes is exactly like me. I always felt like there’s something wrong with me that I can’t get it right first time but, like you, I undo my mistakes or add some of my own sauce, and find a solution. Thank you for giving me confidence to keep growing my crafting “muscles”. You are a real inspiration and I enjoy your videos so much. ❤

Your skirt is beautiful, Sarah! I had exact same experience with estuary skirt pattern as you did. It came out too loose on the waist even though I measured myself and did the fitting! I ended up unpicking all the stitching from the elastic waistband and adjusting the elastic length. It took forever! 🙈 I wish I did you solution.

I watched a podcast with 3 professionals in the sewing and fashion world, and they all said that scissors are better particularly for amateur sewers. They were quite disapproving of rotary cutters.
For a beginner, I think you did very well!

Your skirt is perfect, I specially like the way you have placed the pleats in the front, not many pleats over the hips and that is flattering.
I started making my own clothes when I was 13 and after years of sewing I always had to ajust patterns.
If I had really special fabric, I would use calico to make a mockup and could change it until it was just right and then use that calico as a pattern.
And you don't have to unpick it, just cut it at the seems and when you do your proper skirt, just ad the seems.
The big thing is to have a basic pattern that works and then you will know and not be nervous.
What about the skirt that was really bad, could you not cut that skirt for a pattern.
The viscose in fabric is very good because of the draping.
Wish I could help you, but as you say, the best way is by doing.
    X

I think you might suit a wrap-around style of skirt in a longer length. When I was much younger I used to think this style of skirt was very flattering as well as comfortable to wear. I recently watched Jana’s (Finnish Knitting Stories) latest podcast and in that she mentioned a Modified Shadow Wrap Heel. I found a tutorial on RUclips by The Chilly Dog, and I’m trying it out right now. I think it is even easier to knit than the original and involves knitting or purling into the stitch below to make the “twin stitch” rather than lifting a strand. Anyway just thought I would mention it in case you might be interested. I think your dark navy hinterland dress looks very nice. Actually I thought it was black too at first. 🤎🤎🤎

re skirt lengths we say ankle length or mid calf length. for the width of a skirt- you could say , my skirt is too wide but you would say the width of the skirt is...not the wide of the skirt! Your fluency is A* as are your podcasts.

🌱Thank you for another lovely companionable podcast........in english another word for "cut " might be "slice"....a slice of bread or a slice of cake or pizza....but it doesn't seem to be used in dressmaking ... i think technically it is what craft knives and rotary cutters do, but cut seems to be preferred.🪴

Perhaps with a rotary cutter the Dutch word is Snijd
