The Avengers of Independent Country Music

- Today, I'm assembling the Avengers of the independent country music world because I wanted to try something a little bit out of the box -- and do something outside the major label world. So grab your infinity stones and come learn a thing or two about Jason Isbell (2:22), Sturgill Simpson (3:13), Tyler Childers (4:56), Colter Wall (5:56), Cody Jinks (7:19), Turnpike Troubadours (8:57), Aaron Watson (10:28), Jamie Lin Wilson (11:24), and a few bonus inclusions (12:26) that I would say comprise the A-list of the indie country scene! Let me know who you think should be in the list, too. Love y'all. --Grady

Old Town Road song of the year out now
Tyler Childers always looks like he is watching out for a sniper in the audience when he sings.
😂😂😂
To be fair he mostly just looks Coked the fuck out lmao
he used to do a lot of coke. i think hea doin better now
Hilarious
This is possibly the best comment iv ever seen anywhere.. yes.. yes he does 🤣🤣
I swear we need a Spotify Playlist with all the music you like and recommend
Every month or two I update the playlist that I link in the description!
@@GradySmith thank you I don't know how I never seen that
I was definitely just thinking about that. I kinda want to go make myself a playlist just consisting of everyone he talked about in this video.
@@katiegurksnis160 Just make it a massive playlist of everything hes ever talked about that he likes
There’s a playlist called The Texas Music Pickers that has some of these and a lot more that’s better than the stuff he talks about.
Hear me out....
Wheeler Walker Jr = Howard The Duck
Definitely Deadpool
Fuck you bitch
@SageXSorrow fuck your dog

Not to be a nerd but these guys are more like the X-men, here’s why. The Avengers in the marvel universe are more accepted by the public whereas the X-men are not (because they are mutants). Put that into modern country music industry and you see that all of our modern day outlaws are not accepted or aren’t played because their not snaptracking or this or that. Again not to be a nerd and I probably worded that better in my head but, yeah.
Yep, you're a nerd, but we still love you!
@@GradySmith you didnt have to do him like that
This is an EXCELLENT take on it @Rocka-billy the kid - love the X Men and can totally see the link.
When Alt-Country is more Country than Modern Country
The Unknown Psycho Bro you’re spittin straight fax rn
Facts
The shit they play on radio isn't country at all, and they won't play real country artists which is WHY they had to go outside the box! It's not alt-country by choice, it's not even "Americana" by choice. WTF does Americana mean? American style music? Isn't all music done by Americans that way? THE REASON they had to call it "Americana" Is because modern country has shit pop nonsense ala Flordia Georgia Line/Sam Hunt/etc. but it was making a lot of MONEY. So they created a new term to call country songs, since new country wasn't country at all, but it still made so much MONEY.
Lol. Amen
@@Allagi22 created a new term? the origin of Country pop dates back to the 50s when two guys by the name of Owen Bradley and Chet Atkins wanted to create a new kind of music for a young adult audience since rockabilly at the time stole away much of country music’s youth fan base
The “thicket” gets me every time, so happy you threw that in there
John Moreland is one of the best song writers I've listened to in my 35 years
Moreland gets so overlooked.
John Moreland is so good, but he's had a couple of interviews about not wanting be classified as a country singer. The main one I remember someone asked him "How do you feel about Stapleton now being considered the sad bastard of country music?" and John replied "It's good. Cuz I'm not sad and I ain't country."
He came from a punk background. Of course he doesn't want to be put in a box... I claffisfy it as good.
@@DualYel I agree, I have no issue with him being left off of country lists. He makes great music and at the end of the day that's all that should matter.
Moreland is amazing!!!
Y’all sleepin on Charley Crockett
Christopher Baker The Valley is one hell of an album
Vincent Neil Emerson is another good one
Hes definitely under the radar. Love his new album and bought it on the first day
He’s under the radar? He’s selling out venues here weekly.
That's a super under rated artist for sure
I’ve been in the music BUSINESS since I was 21, and I’m now 69. You are on to something that’s going to grow and make you a major critic sooner than later. Just keep going by your heart, and never go by your head alone. And when the time comes when some may try to bribe you for a good review. Shoot them down for longevity.
Lost Dog Street Band is Ant-Man because they are criminally underrated.
7:49 - "Now that I know Cody's music, I never mistake it."
7:51 - Shows picture of Ward Davis
I came here to make this comment 🤦♀️ love ward tho I feel like he could have talked more about him
*on purpose lol
"THiCkeT!"
colter wall and cody jinx are some of my absolute favorite singers along side eric church and tyler childers. glad to see you bringing them into the spotlight
I've met Colter. Numerous times. He's from my home province. His dad was our last premier.
**talks about Cody Jinks’ struggles with the duality within himself**
Me: oh he’s for sure gonna make him Hulk.
Grady: Cody’s Thor.
Me: wha-
I blame the beard.
I had the same reaction. Duality = he's gonna be the Hulk...
He blew it. Have some forgiveness in your heart
"Tyler's got an incredible voice. I love when he says *thicket* "
10/10 made the video😂
WAYFARING STRANGER me too haha
Sturgill as Loki is perfect lol
Except loki isnt an avenger....
colen32147 exactly. Sturgill isn’t country, he’s just an artist, man! ☮️
Tough to assign Charley Crockett to an avenger. But he deserves some sort of spot.
This was fun, I'd actually love to hear your "avengers of mainstream country music". Might be tricky, maybe they should be the justice league? Maybe Carrie underwood is wonder woman, and etc.
Aaron Watson’s song “July in Cheyenne”, about Lane Frost, is possibly one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard.
His song blue bonnets in July is about his daughter they lost
Bless you for introducing Colter Wall to me, brings back my hope for the future of country music
Tyler's song Nose To the Grindstone was in season 2 of Yellowstone. So glad to hear it on the show!!
I really hope Evan can turn everything around. Turnpike is amazing.
Avengers AND country music in the same video!? Count me in!!
Cody Jinks Tyler Childers Chris Stapleton Colter Wall are all really good
My favorite group of artists right now
Ahhhh 😂😂😂 I LOST it when:
you: I LOVEE it when he says...
(Cut)
Tyler: “ThiCkEt”
DED 😂😂 love the vids man
My brother and I were at that Turnpike show. We started looking for tickets to go see them the very next day after seeing Old Crow Medicine Show at their new year's celebration at the Ryman with our younger brother and our parents. I found the show at the caverns and bought them for him as a birthday/graduation present. Epic performance, fantastic acoustics and a time I won't forget. I sincerely hope the band gets back together and gets their personal stuff worked out as well.
Colter Wall definitely deserves to be more popular, he’s a genius when it comes to songwriting, and he’s a damn good singer too.
I sent a message recently to call attention to Whiskey Myers. They been around a while with 5 awesome albums. Lean more toward southern rock but got some great country songs. Their ncw self titled album is out. Would love to see you review them. Love your videos ! Also how bout some Cadillac Three !!
And they're opening up for the rolling stones so they're playing at stadiums lmao, unlike many nashville country artists and even some of the people mentioned on this video
You had me at Jason Isbell. The man is a lyrical genius that can do no wrong!
Dustin Whitfield plus he is a wonderful live performer. I just saw he & the 400 Unit as well as Amanda Shires last weekend-flat fabulous!
I'd love to see a video about Lost Dog Street Band if at all possible.
Hulk - Jamey Johnson! Definitely!
Sturgil Simpson’s Sound & Fury, is on Netflix.
Jason Isbell, Colter Wall, Felice Brothers, Ian Noe, and Drive By Truckers(most of all) are keeping great music alive!
Been watching your videos for a few months now. Your analysis of country music is spot on, in my opinion, and draws parallels to much of what I think about it these days.
You've got a new sub. Thanks for mentioning Colter Wall, from another Canadian.
I love watching your channel because you expose me to all these awesome country singers i would have never discovered otherwise.
Check out Paul Cauthen, Eveverybody walking this land came across my playlist and I thought it was a Johnny Cash song I hadn’t heard.
Man I love your videos. I’m so glad to find someone else around my age who shares my appreciation for the traditions and beauty of country music.
You should do reviews of old albums. Say, top albums of 1960, etc. And maybe draw comparisons to recent albums. Would be interesting to see Outlaw Era reviewed
Very interesting video, and you in fact got many of my fav artists at the indie country scene. But Flatland Cavalry and Charlie Wesley Godwin are also splendid artists I know you have talked about before. I would also recommend Victoria George and Carson McHone who have released amazing albums this year. I had the honor to attend a Carson McHone gig here in Norway in May and she's a truly talented singer. Also, lend your ears to Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. Willies son and his band have also released a splendid album this year.
Love all your videos and love how you keep it real and talk about who you want to talk about, never pandering to one group of fans or anything. However, I do particularly like when you talk about these guys lol. Keep up the great videos! Love your creativity and how you keep coming up with new video formats. Very fun!
Yes! 👏🏼you👏🏼speak👏🏼the👏🏼truth . What a great grouping... I might be biased because these are all artists I love, but yessssss Grady!
Fantastic list. Almost my entire playlist, just missing a few. Jamey Johnson, John Moreland, Whiskey Myers and Arlo McKinley and the Lonesome Sound for sure belong on it as well.
You forgot Flatland Cavalry, thanks to you by the way for turning me onto their music. They have a really great sound, with the fiddles, banjos and Cleto Cordero’s voice. To me, that’s country music in its truest form.
Also, he’s not exactly “indie” cause he’s signed to a big label in Canada. But there’s Brett Kissel. If you haven’t heard his music before - check him out.
I literally had tears in my eyes when you talked about Turnpike. Such a talented group that puts out amazing music. They've gotta come back from this hiatus. If they don't, I feel sorry for the world that won't ever heat their amazing music 🎶
This was just genius! Great video Grady!
Any of y'all ever heard of Parker Millsap? Excellent musician, master lyricist.
Parker is amazing!
Kinda confused on why Whiskey Myers isn’t in here. They have some straight bangers!
Think the focus was more on individual artists
Great video. One of my favorites so far!
How does Grady have only 81k subs? These videos have the feel of a multi million sub channel. Keep up the great work
No mention of The White Buffalo. Tragic. He's so under rated.
White Buffalo can be Captain America. Legit.
Fr he’s the best
Cody Johnson came out of my hometown, and every year he throws a show called the Hometown Throwdown which is just a big concert at the fairgrounds in my town. From that concert, I’ve heard Cody Jinks play, as well as the Turnpike Troubadours, and many more. Cody Johnson had a very humble start. He used to play little gigs at one of his friends about half a mile from my house, and me and my dad would sit out on the porch and listen.
I’m really digging Colter Wall right now. His story telling is beautiful. Just listen to the lyrics of Bald Butte. His cover of Van Zandt’s Snake Mountain Blues blows me away. The sweetness of Caroline is heart warming. Right now I’m jamming Living on the Sand every time I get in the truck. Nothin’ is a song I like to listen to after getting me mind in a haze. Thanks for the video.
If someone with connections in the music industry could put together a Highwaymen 2 with Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, and #4 of choice you will have my eternal gratitude.
Lemme just say I’ve been with Tyler Childers since day 1
I'm a fan of Tyler Childers and it's been a year, but his latest album is funeral music. Old stuff is awesome though
@@LDBoone k
Jason Isbell's Southeastern album is my favorite album of all time. A monument of human expression - everyone can find a song that they can enjoy from it
💯 I’ve been listening to this album for 5 years straight !
I will be eighty years old and will be playing that album for my great grandchildren to listen to. I made sure to turn my now seventeen year old son onto him and he's seen him twice thus far.
YES! So happy to see Daniel Donato getting some shoutouts! Been following him a while.. I know i'm not alone out here! Also, respect on the Canadian nods too! Love from Canada! Also, would LOVE to see your reactions to the Dan + Shay x Justin Bieber single out today... we all need some entertainment!
Your listing of this bunch gives me hope for Country Music & the survival of what we know and love about "America's Music"
Literally just commented on a other video asking if you'd heard of Colter Wall 😂
All of these guys are incredible. Great vid.
Yes!!! The video I’ve been waiting for!!!
Agree.....you do look like Dirk's Bentley....😂 Ha ha. Also l, love Cody Jinks, Colter wall is just amazing, Casey Donahue is also on my playlist a ton, and completely out of my normal listening sphere, I can't stop listening to Upchurch, that guy is just on another level.....keep up the good work man, we need more real country music exposure here in the UK
We have a radio station up here called CKUA. Has a killer program called Wide Cut Country. Showcasing all these artist and more. Love to see all and any attention to these fantastic artists. Thanks for this vid
Not a huge music guy and pumped I went 6/8 for knowing of and having downloaded albums. We need more coverage of artists like these!
I love your channel for a lot of reasons, but probably the number one improvement it has made in my life is making me a Jason Isbell fan
As someone who’s only casually into country/Americana (Jason Isbell, Kacey Musgraves, Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton are all time fav artists of mine) but who’s always looking for newer great country records, I appreciate your service sir
Mike and the Moonpies
If you haven’t checked out Logan Mize, I’d recommend it. He’s from my hometown in Kansas and he’s got a lot of fun songs. My favorite is “can’t get away from a good time”
I loved this video. I usually don’t comment but have been watching your videos. My all time favorite is William Elliott Whitmore. We can label him country blues with a banjo. I would love to see him on a video. Also one I got into awhile ago was Frank Fairfield. Talk about neo country, that is frank. Hope you know these guys
give whiskey Myers a go, you'll love em'
No koe, Brent Cobb, read southall, whiskey Myers?
This was a really fun video
Watching your channel grow gives me hope that country Music fanbase is also growing at the same pace. 😊 Man, I've been following this channel ever since I saw the video about the snap beat that's killing country music and you had around 40k subscribers if I'm not wrong. Happy for you.
been following since he reviewed ashley mcbrydes girl going nowhere album...he had less than 10k subs...so that makes me feel smaaart...lol...thankfully the snap beat video blew grady up...
Great video, I love the avengers myself and also you should check out a awesome unknown country artist named Kris Anderson ! ! ! Who I think sounds better than half the guys on the country radio of today !
sturgill simpson had the best performance on snl i've ever seen...cody jenks "cast no stones" i listen to every day... i'm old so i've never seen an avengers movie...lol...love your content grady
Hey Grady Smith! You defiantly need to look up Reckless Kelly!!! They are another big Americana band that always has a rocking time when they play.
Colter Wall’s song “Sleeping on the Blacktop” from his first album Imaginary Appalachia was featured in the movies Hell or Highwater and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
My god, I've never heard of Jason Isbell before, and absolutely fell in love with this bit at 2:25. Beautiful.
Does anyone know where i can find this live performance? Thank you so much, and greetings from all the way over to Sweden!
I'm pretty sure that clip was from his Austin City Limits performance. Same performance as this one, which is my favorite.... ruclips.net/video/NaUCDqWzy1k/видео.html
Sweden… home of the wonderful band First Aid Kit
Cody Jinks rocks. You're spot on about Turnpike being Guardians of the Galaxy lol, can't find a fix with them on their hiatus so I just continue to listen to more Turnpike. Check out Paul Cauthen if you haven't yet.
This is an awesome video.
Hey Grady, have you listened to Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band before? They're an awesome band out of Wyoming that are growing a huge following in the Western states. Really good classic country sound with some awesome fiddle
Thank you for the advice on the avenger country singers! now, I can dive deep in the heart of country through my pandoras' box. Pandora pun intended.
One more time Grady. Josh freaking Ward. The best doing it these days. More than I Deserve. Go listen. Now haha
I personally like Hard Whiskey and Sent Me You better...
Mad_Habber oh I love them. More than I deserve is the album name! I love everything josh has done.
Thanks for recognizing Colter Wall. I’m currently enjoying his music.
This was probably your funnest and funniest video
Your comment about your first impression about Colter Wall is the same reaction I had when I first heard Josh Turner. I thought we was a old scruffy looking guy and was shocked to find he was a young clean cut guy.
Hey Grady just came across your channel, and I love it. It’s great to see someone that is talking about the discrepancy between radio country and real country. Have you ever heard of Grady Spencer? Could you do a video on him?
I think Aaron Watson and Cody Johnson we’re labeled perfectly! Lol I’ll actually be seeing Aaron this Saturday
Thanks for introducing me to Jamie Lin Wilson!
It's so cool that Dierks Bentley's brother took some time to recognize some indie artists.
I’d give a lot of credit to lost dog street band. I first heard colter in Hell or High Water, but Lost Dog was what really spun me down the alt country rabbit hole on Spotify and I think they fall in well with the honest, gritty, and beautiful sound that the wider genre holds
Loved this video!!!!
Randy Rogers, and Wade Bowen had the best album in 2018 with Hold My Beer Vol 1, which had a very 1980s sound. Volume 2 is released in May.
No mention of Shane Smith and the Saints?
Andrew Humphries I just discovered their music and really like their work.
LOVE them!
I'm no Marvel movie fan, but pretty much all my favorite artist you listed. I call these artist Neo-Outlaw (I don't know if that's a real genre or not) because they pretty much are tapping into the same spirit & energy as Waylon & Willie (and Cash, Haggard & Kristofferson).
I love Frank Foster. I got to interview him in college when I was a part of my college radio club. Such a great guy with a great band!
Thanks for turning me on to Randall King and Midland, not relevant to this vid, perhaps. But definitely going to check out some of the ones mentioned her. I introduced my wife to Country music, albeit through George Strait, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, and so on. She still loves country, but I’m not really a fan of the current crop. Thanks for rekindling my interest.
On a side note, you mention Va in this video, and 64 West (which doesn’t go west sometimes, and crosses 264 East in my parts) so wonder if you live around Hampton Roads. Not stalking (I imagine they all say that, but really) just curious.
Anyway, Good Job!
Great video 👍
Would of liked to see Teea Goans included , even as an Honorable Mention.
But this is your list.
👍
Your description of Cody Jinks makes me think of Marty Stuart and the Superlatives, Saturday Night....Sunday Morning album.
Yep!!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 woke up to 4 degrees Celsius. Snow ❄️ in Alberta Canada Already!!!!!!!!!!
I was born in raleigh and live right outside of raleigh. Was shocked to see you mention american aquarium! Have been watching the original and new band for years.
Things Change was my in my Best Albums of 2018! Loved them for about five years now.
That album is great. I love the new band. Ill have to check that vid out. Thanks for the reply!
