  • This is a tabletop review of the TAURUS GX4 MICRO COMPACT 9MM. In this video we will discuss the history and development of the firearm, and provide side by side comparison with other popular models to establish scale and help visualize what it would be like carry this based on familiar platforms. We will outline all of the features, and how these features may or may not be important to you based on your personal needs. Range performance will also be discussed along with different tested methods of carry and how comfortable it is to carry on a regular basis. Last, we will provide an overall opinion of how this firearm stacks up for concealed carry purposes. Thanks for watching!

Owned the Shield, 43, 43x, Sig p365, GX4 and currently rock the Sig P365X.
I love em all and would have to say the GX4 is the fastest from conceal to the target for my hand size. With over 2000 rounds the only issue is my rear sight moved a little. Straighten and put loctite on it. Very accurate gun!
If it was made by Glock all hell would break loose.

Agreed ! I have both (GX-4 & P365x) as well and carry and live by my p365x for primary and my Glock 42 (.380 acp) in the pocket as my secondary. I have yet to put the GX-4 in my carry rotation but is still a great little pistol. 🤙🏻

That's why I carry a g3c and not my SIG 229 anymore. No the SIG isn't super expensive but I can't replace that particular one. I used to carry a g19 until I bought a g2c, which I still have, and after carrying the g2c I figured out that the g19 was really too uncomfortable for me. The g2 and the g3 are very unnoticeable when iwb carrying.

    Very nice review...thank you.
I bought my GX4 for my NEW EDC.
Wasn't looking for a firearm that was Red Dot Optics ready or had a 'rail'.
I wanted a small 9mm that would be the best for self defense, concealment, yet have quality and be dependable.
I wasn't going to be in any shooting competition with the GX4 as I have other firearms for that.
Purchased the GX4 at my local Scheels and got the last one in stock at that time.
    329.00
Put the Amerigo Glow Dot front sight on and a big+ over the white factory front sight.
    29.95
Received the pinky extensions (2) for the two 11 rd mags that were included and that completed the grip for me....good to go with my pinky on board.
    9.98
Of course my 13 rd mag has the extension.
That's all I needed to do get the GX4 the way I wanted it on my hip.

I've been a huge fan of Taurus handguns for years. Bought a PT99 around 15 yrs ago and got a PT1911 about 5 yrs ago. Stumbled across a G3 last year and was really impressed so I bought the G2c and G3c since then. G3c came with 3 12rd mags which I thought was awesome and I carry it daily. I've put well over 1000rds thru each one and never had a malfunction with any of them. So getting a GX4 is a no brainer for me. Just wish they came with a higher capacity magazine for a spare like the G3 did.

Well this excellent video just earned you a new subscriber.
I’ve been a fan of Taurus pistols for a few years now. I have a Millennium G2 that I got way back in 2016 and I’ve carried it and shot it quite a bit since then. Shortly after that I got a 709 Slim that has also been a reliable carry piece for me. While there is no denying that Taurus has had some ups and downs it looks like they’re on the up swing now, hopefully for good. The GX4 is definitely on my radar for a future purchase. Thanks for the review.

Great review. Honestly, when I bought my GX4 I wasn’t even in the market for a new gun, it was absolutely an impulse buy. I’d watched a number of reviews (virtually all positive), and one day I was at my local gun store buying some ammo, and saw one, the low price point made it impossible not to turn down. Since purchasing it the only thing I replaced was the sights, which to me isn’t that big of a deal because I think most factory sights kinda suck (I’m looking at you Glock), but because the GX4 can utilize Glock compatible sights there’s a huge aftermarket selection. I’ve had nothing but a positive experience with gun. That established I never intended for it to become my EDC, I carry an HK VP9SK LE and absolutely love it. What I never thought of is the ability to carry the GX4 as a backup. It’s actually small and light enough to accommodate that for people who are disposed to do so. So, if you want to carry a backup, and aren’t a big fan of .380 for whatever reason the GX4 is an extremely viable alternative.

I have a Sig 365XL which has the same grip frame as your 365X. Both of those share the same 12 round magazine which inserts flush with the grip. I prefer some of the magazine base protruding to get more positive insertion. Magguts has magazine kits that will give you a 14 round capacity and a slightly protruding base plate. It's a win/win proposition to me.

Love the GX4. Think it's the best model of all the one's that came after the P365 (the P365 being one of the best deigned handguns ever invented). I think the sheet metal FCU is one of the best features of the GX4. I just wish I knew more about the actual FCU parts/function. Can't find any disassembly videos or any other videos of people working on the parts. Hope that changes soon. (edit: finally found pics. Very good table top review. The only thing that would have made it better is including some clips of shooting it in the range portion of your review.
I didn't see this video when I was in the market for a micro9. (YT just recommended it.) I narrowed my choices down to the Ruger Max 9 and the GX4. As it turned out, I went with the GX4. It has been my EDC since March.
I appreciated your observations about the stippling on the side of the frame adding to the gun's stability. When I first saw them, I thought Taurus did that primarily for training your index finger placement, and I didn't think it would be all that valuable to me. I was wrong. While I always make a conscious attempt to place my trigger finger on the frame above the trigger and out of the trigger guard, I found that the side stippling texture gave me an immediate confirmation that my finger was where it was supposed to be. I've come to value that. And the same holds true for the thumb placement on my support hand.
BTW, I'm a southpaw shooter, and this pistol just feels great in my hand. I have freakish hands: short fingers but a wide span across my palm. The standard backstrap fits my hand perfectly. I can barely get any of my pinky on the pistol grip, using the flush-fitting 11-round mags.
My preferred method of concealed carry is pocket carry, and this pistol is the perfect size for it. My GX4 rides in a DeSantis Nemesis (#N38BJE1Z0) pocket holster, in the pocket of my Coleman's canvass utility pants. The pockets on the Coleman's are deep enough with an angle mouth or opening to the pocket. So I get quick access to the pistol with no monkey fist phenomenon going on, a quick, smooth draw and the holster stays put. Even seated, the access to the pistol is good in these pants. So here's my formula for pocket carry: the right pistol + the right pocket holster + the right pants = the right pocket carry.

I've shot both GX4 and P365. My shots are identical but I prefer the GX4 trigger better and it's grip is better, and it's price is way better. I would trust the GX4 but not the P365 with all it's past problem filled history. So far I haven't heard about any broken strikers or triggers with the GX4 like the P365 had. But I like the Hellcat more than the GX4 and the only way I'll carry a G43X is if it has the S15 round mags.

    • @deucedeuce1572
      @deucedeuce1572 2 года назад

There' a prob with the GX4 trigger. If you put ANY side pressure on the trigger, it will jam the safety "dongle", which makes the trigger impossible to pull. Prob don't happen often when drawing and shooting the gun regularly, but some people say it happens. (edit: the dongle don't go in, so it gets jammed on the frame... and because the angle is acute, it gets locked onto the frame which makes it impossible to pull the trigger).

So in the end I've had good reliability and accuracy with both, it's just a matter of money and the GX4 cost much less. The P365 models reach up to over $1000 which is ridiculous for a small micro/sub compact EDC, they're not competition or military guns. I'd rather keep carrying my G19 that's still small but can actually shoot in competition and the G19 already has a long history with Navy SEAL and SOCOM military use. I myself would go with the GX4 over the P365 just to save $100 to $500 dollars. Plus the GX4 has a lifetime warranty, the P365 doesn't because I was told that by a Sig Sauer rep.

That "stainless steel reinforcing" inside the frame IS the firearm. It's a modular pistol (like a Sig Sauer P-320) where that fire control unit is the serialized part (carries the serial number). There is a window in the back of the slide where the serial number is visible. You could change the grip frame, the slide, etc and it's the same gun as long as the same fire control unit is used inside. The FCU is easily removed.
Those memory pads on the side of the frame (for your thumb) are nothing new. A lot of people put some skateboard tape there for just that purpose or include that area in a stipple job on a polymer frame.
I see these GX-4 pistols online for $299 all day long right now. They were $330 at the gun show last Saturday.

Which Tagua holster model did you get to fit your GX4? Don't see one specific for the GX4. Thanks.

Anyone have issues out of the gates with the GX4? I took my brand new GX4 to the range yesterday and it jammed up on my four different times and issues with the bullet going into the chamber. The range buy said the gun should be cleaned and lubed prior to use. I have never had that issue with any gun including my "POS" Hi Point. Any advice is appreciated.

Taurus test fires the guns, so they come dirty...always clean any weapon and lube -especially when new.

Have you heard about the "delay fire" with the trigger? Do you know if Taurus had fixed this trigger issue? Was just about to buy one. But, very worried about any issues with a gun that I will be carrying. Thank you for the great review.

If only they'd make one with a 3.7 barrel AND a 15 round grip like the Hellcat Pro, I'd buy it because it's curved grip angle fits my hand better.

@@broscience5876 it's not being cheap, it's called getting equal value for the right price. Most of the guns you'll name have had problems as well, let it go.

I agree. Most I've spent on a Taurus was 500 and that was my 1911. G series has been about 250 including my G3c when it first came out. Can't beat the prices on great quality pistols.

I bought a tx22 competition a few months back. I was shocked at the quality it is. It’s one of my favorites. I got 1,358 rounds so far (I have a log on my phone). Should add around 5k this year to that. Think it’ll do great. If they make a 9mm that is the size and shape of the tx22 I’ll buy it and if it works properly I’ll carry it.

Blue on pistols is thin, sight not compatible with say 365 or hellcat. If correct doesn't come stock with longer clips for larger hands. Is it a bad gun no but not same quality of parts as competition.

@@thomascrompton7775 you not lying about the blueing, it does start to fade quickly. Other than that I have no complaints.

Glock 43 introduced 2015. Sig P938 introduced 2011. Maybe that was the kickoff of the micro 9 mm for me, or the P238 in 2009, or the Ruger LCP in 2008. Finally the LC9 in 2011. If you’re talking polymers. Glock doesn’t innovate they just play catch-up. Kinda remind me of Harley.
