Sophiology and the Divine Feminine in Christianity

- I explore the tradition of Sophiology (Divine Wisdom, Sophia) in Christianity and attempt to recover a notion of the Divine Feminine that has been lost in Christian orthodoxy.
very timely for me - I'm currently writing a book on the subject - appreciate hearing your reflections
Also Pageau’s 2023 ARC conference speech on “what is the good.” 17 minutes of distilled philosophy and theology culminating in the modern impact of enlightenment thought.
Thank you. I’ve been giving this subject a lot of thought lately, and your thoughts gave me even more to consider.
There are many areas where the feminine is present (even within Orthodoxy) but has clearly been ignored or even suppressed.
1) Christ’s behavior and prescriptions are among the most glaring examples. Compassion, receptiveness, passivity, forgiveness, the giving of the self: these are all classically feminine qualities.
2) The Bible explicitly describes the Church as God’s bride, yet many modern Christians appear uncomfortable embracing this feminine role.
3) Communion mirrors breastfeeding. Through consumption of Christ’s body, we achieve spiritual nourishment.
These are just a few examples to illustrate how underexplored this concept is. As far as I’m concerned, there’s a lot of evidence that historical misogyny has veiled a vital aspect of Truth from conventional Christianity.
As Trans Christian this really comforts me. I've always been more comfortable identifying with
a bit more of femininity then masculinity throughout my life
Interesting exploration Ray. Like the moon reflects the sun, into the darkness of the night.
Hey Ray Williams, let me help you out-swap the Holy Spirit out for the Virgin Mary and see what happens
There is no 'divine'.
Maybe you could entertain it as a literary concept?
@@TeDuffour The 'divine' would be a literary concept like chick-lit - irrelevant to me.
Wym by ‘divine’
@@williamoarlock8634, that’s an unfortunately dismissive way to approach the world of art, literature, and ideas.
“Chick-lit” is not a literary concept but a genre. Think more along the lines of “fate” or “destiny” as they appear in Beowulf. You don’t have to believe these things are materially real in order to explore them as meaningful conceptions.
To disregard anything you don’t find evidently true in ancient literature is to cut yourself off from the history of man.
@@TeDuffour I don't 'disregard' and 'dismiss' - I analyse these 'conceptions' of 'spiritual' and 'divine' conclude them to be rubbish and will declare them such.
