He's actually said this, yet crowds stll think being hostile will put him off. Shows what a fantastic all-round player he is.

I am an American and I was rooting for Ben - till his match with Tiafoe (and after) - when he started showing his true colors. I hope his parents and others around him would actually read constructive criticism on social media and help Ben become the best version of himself. His press-conference after the match with Djokovic would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic. Everything he said reeked of arrogance and passive-aggressive vindictiveness. Not being able to say anything positive about his opponent? Saying that Novak was similar to him? Calling Djokovic “number 2 player” when it was already known that he was back to being #1? Plus, it is not a secret that Novak was robbed of his titles and rankings by not being allowed to play in many tournaments in 2022. Numbers aside, Ben could have used any other terms (like “top player”, for example). Can’t tell the difference between imitating and mocking, seriously? Can’t tell when someone is being ironic? Shelton could have turned it into a good joke but no - he had to take another dig at his opponent. Granted, Ben was ‘compensating’ because he was in pain. However, it is the degree of his disappointment that I find most shocking. He should have been elated to have played against the GOAT Novak and should have been beaming of joy, no matter the outcome. Of course, any young player who reaches that level should want, hope, and aspire to win and believe it could happen, if all the stars aligned. There have been cases of astonishing upsets in history of tennis - but those were rather rare. To actually expect to win, to feel entitled to win the very first match against the greatest player of all times - is simply delusional. I am afraid this is not just Shelton’s problem - it is something either cultural, generational or both. So many people seem to confuse confidence with arrogance - or worse. I doubt Shelton will ever have Djokovic’s class as a person, but he is young and can learn a lot - in every aspect - from Novak, Federer, and others great players. I think he needs to watch as many videos as possible of Novak’s matches and pay attention to how Djokovic embraces his opponents after the match, regardless of winning or losing, and to what he says about them. Novak is not just a great tennis player - he is a remarkable person.
Totally agree with your comment. Also this Benny (Hill) guy should watch how Alcaraz play and how much respect he has towards Novak in his press conferences. Even though I'm a huge Novak fan, its impossible for me not to like a humble, but exceptional player also like Alcaraz.
Very well said, and this problem looks like was passed by his parent, who said that Novak “wants” to be loved too much lol, another brat talking recklessly. Like father like son
There won’t be another player in history that silenced the crowd and made them look like fools the way Novak did. The hate run in their veins was paramount until they gave up and learned that he is better than anyone of them in terms of manners and mindset. All the rest even his biggest rivals are just mere mortals in this game whereas, Novak is simply immortal.
Wimbledon 19 will forever stay as a prime example of famous British "courtesy"... such a disrespectful and unsportsmanlike display. They deserved an award for that. Djokovic silencing them and that finger wiggling "lady" was absolutely sublime to witness live! Also, the so called "sportsman", "graceful", "class act" Federer did not even try to show any sort of sportsmanship during the match by even trying once to let the crowd know just how disrespectful they were towards his opponent and the game of Tennis overall...
In Shelton's case you should have put more emphasis on Ben's antics on the court which I'm sure were the main reason why Novak did the phone celebration. There are unwritten rules in tennis that you don't celebrate excessively your opponents mistakes and Shelton disrespected that. Whenever Djokovic did a double fault or an unforced error Ben celebrated like he won an insane winner and even stared at Novak trying to intimidate him lol. The crowd normally supported their home player nothing wrong with that, but their cheering on Novak's mistakes probably encouraged Ben to act the way he did as he was in a dire situation and needed a boost. Just look how he celebrated that break in the 3rd set to force a tiebreak, you'd think Ben won the match. Imo if Shelton behaved normally during the match Novak wouldn't have mocked him (and the crowd) at the end. Why didn't he do anything in the Fritz match? Because Taylor behaved like a normal person.
@@therunawaykid6523 Novak beat Federer more times head on head, He has more Slams and both have a golden Slam. Novak's clear. You can have your favorite as Federer, that's your choice. But Novak is the undisputed GOAT in all of Tennis, including men and women.
Forget Novak for a second, and focus on the kid: If you are young and just started, what gives you the right to be that arrogant? You literally didn't do shit, it takes years to prove yourself. Djokovic did just that, and if someone can teach that kind a lesson, he is the guy.
@@MajorTom4 Reaching it is absolutely phenomenal and praise worthy. Attending it and even more winning it multiple times is another league however. When we talk about the best players now of course they are going to attend and play in it, but what separates them is winning, consistency and being the best or among the best for so long.
People called Djokovic arrogant for thinking he could beat Federer and Nadal early in his career. When he went on to do just that, they stopped talking. Now that Novak is the man to beat, you’re treating Shelton just as unfairly as young Djokovic was treated.
How appropriate Novak broke Federer's 20 slam record at Wimbledon last year, Nadal's 22 slam record at Roland Garros this year, Serena's 23 slam record at the US Open this year and has a chance to break Margaret Court's 24 slam record at the Australian Open next year. Breaking each legend's record on their home turf, so to speak.
Novak is a record holder. This mixing of men and women records is ridiculous and it started only when he broke Nadal record, when beloved Federer won 20, nobody mentioned Graf, Court...

Shelton s from US, his behavior speaks a lot about his upbringing, I'm guessing most gen z s from big cities in US are like him. @nyess109 nah, de Minaur said this whole thing how Djokovic can seem like a great person on court, but totally different off court. Something along those lines. Djokovic came out and said he doesn't even know the guy on a personal level.

It is a fact that Andy learned his lesson. So much so that nowadays he acknowledges the genius of Djokovic and speaks openly about it. Roddick was also the one who said that famous quote about Novak: "first he takes your legs and then he takes your soul".
Ironic isn't it that it was Roddick in the end who was always injured, bringing an early end to his career - where Djokovic is now known for his longevity and resilience

It is almost impossible to talk about Wimbledon 2019 final without showing the "finger lady"... That is an iconic depiction of the disdain, underestimation and disrespect of the whole crowd towards one giant of the sport. The crowd really had to learn a bitter lesson from the warrior genius of Novak Djokovic. Overall, I think it is ok if people are cheering more for Federer, but the way Djokovic was treated is disgusting. It should have been like Wimbledon 2008 final, when the crowd shared their support for both Federer and Nadal.
To be fair, I kind of feel sorry for that lady. Federer was in a winning position with 2 match points and she was just cheering him on like the majority of the crowd. This is normal behaviour and not in my opinion disrespectful of Novak. She just had no idea she would go home crying like the rest of the crowd and end up living in infamy as the finger lady. A symbol of perhaps the biggest choke in Federer's career and one of Novak's greatest triumphs.
@@weekendhacker I get your point. On the one hand you are right, it is totally ok to root for your favorite athlete. And I agree this whole thing might have been too harsh on her. Too bad she was caught on camera. But I think we have to take the whole context into consideration. The finger lady episode is not about the finger lady. It is about the bigger picture of what was going throughout the whole match. There are many, many accounts of the crowd being extremely hostile and unfair against Novak in this occasion, insulting him between first and second serves, applauding unforced errors etc etc. That is not the way to treat a great champion like him, or any other player for that matter! Tennis is a noble sport, this kind of crowd behavior has no place in a temple like Wimbledon Centre Court. I myself am a big fan of the Big 3. I love Rafa, Roger and Novak to the same extent. Three giants, geniuses of the sport. But the unfair media and crowd treatment towards Novak has always bothered me. I do think that if it was Nadal on the other side against Federer, people would have probably behaved differently. There would be no finger lady rooting against Rafa or Roger. The finger brings about another lesson: do not underestimate the opponent, the game is not over until the last point is scored. I totally get the fact it was Roger's last chance of winning a Grand Slam. But I believe the Gods of tennis decided to give the crowd a lesson. If they had been more fair, maybe Roger would have won that one. Who knows...
Hearing a 20 year old tennis player realizing that Noval can compete on the highest level, is like hearing a 14 year old student realizing 1+1=2. Pfffff, i mean how much salted can he get after being destroyed.
When Shelton was talking to his box referring to Novak as a nobody - "he is shading, yeh" - and everyone was cheering for Shelton since Shelton thinks he is way better than Djokovic and Djokovic is nothing. Disgusting!

Andy Roddick learned his lesson and now he's a big fan and advocate of the sheer unmatchable genius Novak is. Ben will also learn his lesson in due course of time. It's about time. Novak will be around for a while now. So, Poor Ben has some time to learn the important and harsh lessons of life.
"I learned a lot about myself (he obviously didn't learn from his opponent who had far better techniques than him). He is a guy who has the same mentality to me on the court". Everything revolves around himself.
The way he handled the crowd in the Wimbledon 2019 final made me a fan, then covid happened and now i love him. I basically judge people's characters by how well they deal with the fact that Nole is the GOAT 😄🐐💖
Only thing Federer has going for him now is his RUclips highlight reels. Some of the best shot making you'll ever see. Novak has the superior attitude, mentality and overall game.
For a long period, I thought he would have lost the chance of making history bc of his choice in COVID. I am really glad and proud that he made the turn around.
How disrespectful of Ben to not even take Djokovic’s name in both pre and post match interviews. It’s almost like he is afraid to take Djokovic’s name as it will shatter his self-belief.
That's why he is the GOAT. He is the GOAT in EVERY aspect. Even as a human. In Marbella he was simply a modest gentleman with a lot of attention and good intentions towards those who came to see him train. You'll never ever find an athlete as good as him in the world. In any sports. So instead of criticizing him one should be grateful to the world (and his mom) to have brought such a phenomenon in this world for us to witness.
Novak has already proven his ability to overcome a negative environment at tournaments and handle trash talk from his opponents. Additionally, one must consider that at a very young age, Novak mentally overcame an extremely difficult period during the NATO bombing of Belgrade. It is challenging to undermine a champion like Novak with mere words when he has already experienced the harsh realities of war and witnessed the bombs that devastated his city and country. This adversity only made Novak stronger. So, before comparing him to any of his opponents, it's essential to research their pasts and determine if they grew up in a tough environment or if they were always pampered and raised as privileged children. This will shed light on their true ability to face adversity and reveal their toughness.
@@I-come-from-the-FutureI'm not sure which aspect of history you've studied, but nowadays, you can easily access a wealth of information about various events. On March 24, 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) initiated air strikes against Yugoslavia, which is now a part of Serbia, with Belgrade as its capital. At that time, Novak was much younger and lived with his family in Belgrade. When someone drops bombs on your country and city, destroying everything in the process, it is undoubtedly referred to as war. It's understandable that many residents of the United States, approximately 98%, were unaware of the situation unfolding on the Balkan Peninsula back then, just as many remain uninformed about the events in Ukraine today. It's regrettable that the truth often becomes apparent several decades later. This is one of the reasons why the Clinton family isn't well-liked in Europe, although this isn't the appropriate forum to delve into that topic.

The biggest trash talk against Djokovic was from Federer press conference after losing to Djokovic in us open. He said the return FH winner to save match point from Djokovic was a lucky shot. Djokovic took it personally and finally won the GOAT debate 😊
Djokovic is the goat. Nobody can disagree and ignore the stats. But your example is off. First of all that wasn't trash talk. It wasn't maybe for him (Federer) to say, but of course there was an enormous luck in that ball. Even Djokovic himself admitted that. You never hit a ball purposely on the line first of all. Second, that was a very low percentage shot and he clearly hit the ball recklessly. The rally after that was still somewhat all or nothing tennis. And then he shifted into tactical play. Believing he could break. Knowing the pressure was now on Fed. He made him go get the point , playing a very solid point keeping the ball deep. That's how he transformed that match. No shame in admitting there was some luck. Everybody needs it sometimes.

@@profesorz642 I agree that Fed was salty. Understandably so. Not at his most graceful but human. I also agree that Djokovic is one of the best if not the returners in the history of the game. And one of the biggest reasons for that (apart from the technical aspects) is his shot selection/choice making: he almost never goes for the winner. Not even aiming at corners. He has in mind to always make the return. Aiming for big targets. Deep and often hard through the middle. That's his money shot. 99% of the time. Sure he makes some return winners now and then. I've heard him say that if a fast atp first serve comes at you you fe on deuce to your forehand, you aim through the middle deep slightly to the forehand (right) side of the server. And often when you then hit a winner you pretend it was meant like that. Now on this specific case I stick to what I said before: he went all out because at that moment he actually didn't have a plan for that point.
There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Usually when you cross that line you lose. Compared to Shelton, Djokovic has the class and virtue of an aristocrat. This young American seems immature, uncultured and without basic manners, which is not surprising considering where he comes from.
Novak has unbelievable mental strength. Imagine playing such competitive singles match with the whole crowd and press against you and still defeating your opponents over and over.
Shelton has a very annoying attitude on court (i think it's a vestige of his college days). He doesn't seem to be a bad guy at all, but he needs to understand the difference between confident and cocky. Look at Alcaraz, he showed nothing more than respect for Djokovic and that doesn't prevent him from winning half of their matches. It's obvious that something happened because Novak is generally very generous with young players and what he did at the end of the match showed he was pissed off
Shelton was a bit late with his "downplay" comments about Djokovic level and ability. That was last year, and few years prior when every punk could take a jab at Novak and have a pass from him, because he was to polite. The tank top version of Novak we got this year, that is way more powerful and physically imposing than any version we had since 2016, is here to hand over some lessons. Djokovic might be a step slower sometimes oand his stamina isnt as it use to be, but when he finds his range, he can drill holes in some way better players than this little punk.
His confidence was good and nothing wrong with it. But attitude was so bad. Youngsters like Sinner ,Carlos Rune are so humble. Carlos and Rune defeated him but never saw them showing attitude when speaking about him.
Some American players: Tiafoe, Coco, Pegula, etc said publicly that they should allow "trash-talking" at tennis. They even mentioned that it should be more similar to "basketball". I like when these entitled Americans get humbled. Tennis is not the NBA, sorry 😅
Disse sim! Em quadra gritou para Nole , com o dedo p baixo mostrando a quadra dizendo :" aqui quem manda sou eu". Nole mostrou quem mandava! Assista isso no início do segundo set! Momento q Shelton ganhou um ponto difícil!
If I was a player I’m not gonna “pretend to be his boyfriend” as Nadal would say. It’s so obvious that he’s not an ordinary player so me saying he’s a tough opponent should be good enough. If I’m in the semi finals of the US open I’m not playing as a fan… I don’t see anything wrong with what he said.
Pre match was fine, on court and post match were a lil bad. But hey it’s tennis. It’s supposed to be competitive. He’s not gonna start bending his knees for Novak
As both a tennis player and a devoted tennis mom, my love for the sport runs deep. Naturally, I was excited about the emergence of young American talent, Ben Shelton. However, my optimism took a hit during his match with Tiafoe, and more significantly, after arrogant, disrespectful, cocky trues self. Initially, I was genuinely happy, about this young talented man, Shelton. However, it's now glaringly apparent that he possesses a sense of entitlement and a lack of respect for others. He represents the epitome of the new generation, exuding excessive confidence despite not having achieved any significant milestones as of yet. I hope that Ben's family read our constructive criticisms that have surfaced on social media. Together, they can guide him toward a more refined version of himself. His p press conference was full of words of conceit and veiled bitterness. What's most disheartening is Ben's inability to find a single positive word to say about his opponent. Even more perplexing was his insistence on drawing parallels between himself and Novak. "He never played ME!" The most bewildering aspect is Ben's inability show healthy dose of sportsmanship! Unfortunately, this was not the case. Playing against the GOAT, The best tennis player ever Novak Djokovic, should have been a source of learning, regardless of the match's outcome. This issue may extend beyond Ben Shelton, generational, and cultural factors. Many individuals seem to blur the lines between confidence and arrogance, and perhaps even worse. TOXICITY! I have doubts about Ben Shelton. Youth offers opportunities for to learn, and Ben has the chance to learn from Novak and many others. Djokovic isn't merely a phenomenal tennis player; he's a remarkable individual who exemplifies sportsmanship and humility.
Thank you for your comment! I agree in every point. Thanks!

People called Djokovic arrogant for thinking he could beat Federer and Nadal early in his career. When he went on to do just that, they stopped talking. Now that Novak is the man to beat, you’re treating Shelton just as unfairly as young Djokovic was treated.

War activities happened in neighboring countries and not in any area Novak grew up if I remember history correctly.

You need to tell the difference between some salt and trash

Benn was the one who said when you win you can celebrate however way you want . Newsflash Ben, Djokovic did just that.
Novak hung up and shut him down. Lolz.
the little Shelton must to know where he belongs
The greatest tennis player of all times
"He never played ME!"
The most bewildering aspect is Ben's inability show healthy dose of sportsmanship!
I really hope that Ben one day emerge as a better player and person. a true champion, both on and off the tennis court. JUST LIKE THE GOAT NOVAK or better..
In Serbia, we have a great joke:
"They are arguing with Rafa N. and Roger F. who is the best tennis player of all time.
Rafa says: God sent me to earth with the task of becoming the best of all time!
Roger says: You're a liar! God sent me on that mission!
Novak appears suddenly and says: Guys, guys, there is no reason for your quarrel. I didn't send anyone anywhere."
This is no longer a joke ... there is one God... I mean the tennis God ... I mean is one Nole
🤩🤩🤩
баш тако : цар и бог
😃😁😁🤣
Love that‼️🇷🇸🎾👑
😂 awesome! Luv it. Its true!!
@@tennisfitapp We say that someone is really great only when we put them in jokes and crossword puzzles. Novak has been in both those positions for many years
🤩
Это очень смешно 😅 Новак - лучший! С любовью из России ❤
Look at the face of Andy Roddick when he gave the 24th US Open Championship Trophy to Novak
😂 and I was shocked when he stood next to Novak. Novak looks like a kid in comparison. I understand he's retired, and doesn't care, but maybe he should drill a hole in a spoon. Just a little one.
and his bloated body
....."He's a guy that CAN compete on highest level", saying something so foookn stupid about one of the greatest players to walk the tennis court really says alot about the person speaking...
баш глупо
😄😅😂🤣
When they say Roger. I hear Novak. Love that. ❤😊❤😊
Sure hope his dad reads just a few of these comments and takes them to heart and his kid's heart. Could save a lot of pain for them going forward.
Hope he learns his lesson to be respectful towards the legends also to the opponents whoever it is. And also needs discipline, dedication that lacks in these young players.
3:35 he is a guy whou can compete at the highest level.
And you ????
Can you tidy up your room on the highest level ,?????😂😂😂😂😂
This man is amazing
Thats even makes him greater, now the people who booed him down the road get to tell their children they witnessed a legend in a making
Dude,i think someone just hanged the phone on ya!!!😂😂
Ben's a clear narcissist.
Yes, delusional. Lol😂
He’s an animal who’s been told he’s human
And at the end NOVAK DJOKOVIC send them all in tennis retirement Andy Roddick Andy Murray wawrinka delpo Tsonga David Ferer Berdych Roger Federer nadal 😂😂😂😂😂.. NOVAK DJOKOVIC still 2024 , 25 probably 26 27 still unstoppable force and still counting 😂😂😂
Shelton is just another player. Novak is the GOAT
man, probably the most satisfying match i ever watched in tenis was that 2019 finals, not only GOAT shut the mouth of the worst tenis crowd in the world but at same time he retired Federer as well , what more can you ask for 💪
Just wondering, if Shelton is not impressed with Novak, who does impress him!😮
