This was the track that I first heard by camel and as they say, the rest is history. Such an under-rated band. As a guitarist myself, Andy Latimer has it all, an absolute majestic masterpiece.

Good recommendation. Such an underrated piece of music, band and guitarist. Been listening to this song for 40 years and I never tire of it. Not enough of music like this with feeling and emotion. Still brings tears to my eyes.
Got into Camel by first hearing the song Lies and been hooked ever since. Love the Stationary Traveller album and The Single Factor with songs like Camelogue.
I love David gilmour and comfortably numb but if David had done Ice it would be considered on a par with comfortably numb which is widely considered to contain the top guitar solo ever.

  • @lckang6075

They drop the acoustic guitar part in every live version, so you won't hear it except in this version. The album I Can See Your House From Here which ICE is from is a relatively not that good album in their career objectively. However, Ice from this album is one of their best songs and it also well presented the style of the guitarist aka band leader, Andrew Latimer. Many said Andrew Latimer and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd share a similar guitar style. So if you like Gilmour then you probably will like Latimer as well.
Prog rock was killed by the rising of Punk in the mid-late 70s. Their career had suffered plenty of frustration and members changed regularly then. This song probably partly reflected Andrew Latimer's emotions at that time. I personally recommend the version lived in "Never Let Go" 1993. That is the best version in my opinion. It is quite unfortunate that people usually focus on their 2nd~4th albums (Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness) but neglect their later albums (like Harbour Of Tears, A Nod And A Wink, etc). They also are masterpieces.

I don't know why Camel is so underrated. They definitely had great influence on later bands like Pendragon etc.
I agree with you. The track is almost "cinematic" I would say. I thought of two groups who had built up a conflict with each other and don't know how to make peace again, but finally - throughout the drama - a couple - one from each group - fall in love and "let the ice break". That's what came to my mind (sounds a littlebit like the classic Romeo and Juliet story, doesn't it?).
Thank you for the reaction video.

Camel is my favourite prog band for one reason and one reason only EMOTION they pack so much of it in every song they do, maybe they are not the most complex of the bunch and that doesn't matter to me. They create beautiful music, try listening to Unevensong, Never let go, Lady Fantasy, any song off of The Snow Goose..

Fortunately Andy and co. were smart enough to add "Ice" to their concert set lists when Camel reformed in the early 90's. It's always been a crowd-pleaser for obvious reasons. Keyboard player Kit Watkins is also a huge part of this recording and I really hope the shuffle includes a song or two from the band he's mainly known for, Happy The Man. I personally rate them as America's finest progressive rock group ever, even ahead of Kansas.

I was a late arrival to Camel. This album (I Can See Your House From Here) was my introduction to the band in 1979. I discovered the earlier works later. Yet this album remains my favourite, probably because it was the first.
As others have mentioned, Kit Watkins adds a wonderful voice to the band. His short instrumental composition Eye of the Storm is also on this album and really deserves a listen, if not a reaction. The noise in the background near the end could be brushes on a cymbal. I also think that the guitar "duet" at the end was all Andy Latimer.

FYI: that first synth solo in the song is played by none other then American keyboard player Kit Watkins. Prior to being in Camel he played in, what is now deemed a legendary, band Happy The Man. Their first 2 albums are bonafide classics of the genre provided you like your progressive rock with a bit of jazzrock in it.

FYI, women aren't supposed to like prog rock! Glad your wife does, but then, Camel are special, everything they do is always in good taste, never OTT. I bought their first album on release in 1973 - over 50 years ago, now - & have followed their career ever since, as they've ploughed on, ignoring all the trends, not getting any of the acclaim they deserve. And they're still playing live concerts today, with Andy Latimer (lead guitarist, who does such a fine job on this classic instrumental) the only surviving original member. Thanks for sharing your reaction. You have 14 albums to get through, excluding live recordings!

'Ice' is from the album 'I Can See Your House From Here' which was originally going to be called 'Endangered Species' but was changed to ICSYHFH because the marketing men were full of fear and lacking a sense of humour. The band were right. Progressive rock bands were fast becoming an endangered species by then because of 'New Wave' music. Thankfully there are now many modern prog bands keeping the genre alive and healthy. Jazz nearly disappeared due to bugeoning pop music in the early '60s. No jazz = no Jazz Rock. Eek! Phew, that was a close call!

I'm relatively unfamiliar with Camel, I know a few songs, but that's it. Sonically, I like it. The vocals on their songs, to me, are rather meh (it's not to say they're bad), which is okay because that isn't a main focus of the band. The songs I've heard had very minimal vocals. The instrumentation on this is wonderful.

I was listening to a well-known prog metal band today. Their guitarist is technically brilliant, but it just sounded like a technical exercise in churning out notes as fast as possible. There was no feeling - no emotion and it just became uninteresting.
But this drips feeling and emotion: I would rate it far superior to listen to than any technical shredding. Almost any guitarist could learn a lot from Andy Latimer: in my opinion the finest guitarist I've ever heard.
