I'm travelling across the American West in an RV but I missed homegrown veggies, especially lettuce. So I saved some metal cans and fast food cups, filled them with dirt, and now I've got radishes, carrots, onions, and lettuce growing. I park facing south and they sit on my dash; when I travel they get stowed wherever the sun is shining, or in winter get put under solar-powered LED lighting when the sun clocks out early. I'm kinda proud of my little travelling garden; it's already saved me a bunch of money and I literally just used soil and ash and leftover winter seeds to make it, so cost me almost nothing.
Awesome🙏💪😍
Good for you!!
Sounds great, you should a video showing how easy it is to grow in small spaces with items found at home.
Thank you for posting about your traveling garden! Picturing it my mind gives me a delightful lift to my day!

“maybe you’re in a sky rise in New York City.” that’s me! growing lettuce in a window box with some peas, plus a few odd herbs around the apartment. thanks for this video!
I'm growing it in Dollar store pots in my front window!
I setup a single wire rack shelving unit and can fit 6 window boxes on each shelf. 2 shelves, 12 boxes, nonstop mixed greens production! Love the window box setup!
London here! Top floor! Just received my seeds today!
@@vinkinpark you guys sound like you have been successful growing lettuce indoors, I have tried growing it indoors and have yet to be successful because my lettuce grows and then die after a week or so not even big enough to harvest, my pot was an old 4L frosted plastic ice cream container I used grow lights, because I wanted year round lettuce and my pot had holes on the bottom, any advice on how I can grow lettuce indoors? I am only successfully able to grow lettuce outside in the summer.
or your yard is concrete and pool
I love how you say with container gardening "we can make something that is not as ideal into something that is ideal". I just started gardening this year during the pandemic. I often ask people if they garden. Whenever they reply that they live in an apartment or condo or a house with no garden I always tell them they can buy grow bags (possibilities) which can flourish.
I started my first garden this year also, but my zucchini haven't done well. Many turned yellow and died. 🥵
@@cookiemama4 zucchini needs lots of space to grow so it is better to grow them in the ground not in a container. If you only have the space or option to use containers then grow other plants because there are lots of good options out there, example peppers do well in containers.
@@Aar0nDown
Thank you for that excellent advice! I'll try the ground for zucchini, but the soil will need some help.. :/
@@cookiemama4 your welcome
The feeling of growing and then harvesting what you have grown. Awesome feeling
I love it! never knew that hot pepper plants had flowers! will try lettuce so can have salads from garden
Thanks Luke! I grew 4 containers of Mesclun lettuce and sweet Bibb lettuce. My family loved the taste. I’m hooked, and best thing I don’t have to worry about salmonella and e-coli recalls
I intuitively did lettuce this this way this year-due to my inexperience. Glad to know others do it this way. I thought I was hurting them by not letting them get to their full size, but my salads are quite tasty! It’s producing so much more than I had imagined!
I'm growing tomatoes cucumbers zucchini onions all in pots and they are doing excellent
Im just starting. this is encouraging. He mentioned fertilizing every 2 weeks, have you been doing that? What happens if I really don't want to use chemical fertilizers.. thanks.
Me too and less pests too. I put a pot with a nettle plant nearby and near tomatoes and all insects eat the nettle instead.
Same here. Love growing in containers. Peppers do very well in containers as well. Banana, Bell, Hot.
I hope to do the same!
Dr Earth & Neptune harvest are natural ones. I wouldn't use anything Miracle grow. Egg shells, Worm compost I always put under the seedling then one of the other fertilizer. You can do every 3 weeks also
Awesome video, this year my whole garden was in containers, 3 gallon ice cream buckets. We have 30 tomato plants, 6 peppers, 1 basel, 2 mint and 1 sage. Everything grow amazing except the peppers.
Because of limited garden space and intruding roots from nearby trees, I've been switching over to all containers. LOVE this!! I like making my own growing medium too and recycling the soils after each season. Getting ready to plant lettuce again and realizing how shallow their roots are, I fill in the bottom half of pots, like in the video, with chunks of styrofoam, which normally go into the landfill. Improves drainage. I used to use chunks of brick, concrete, rocks, shells, etc. but they always made the pots too heavy. Then my "bulb" lit up one day and I decided to give it a try!! Bingo! So, I share this with folks and also the appliance delivery guys last week, as they were unboxing my washer. They loved the idea and said they'd share too. Happy growing!! Life is good. It's even better when you garden!!!
Pat Skipper styrofoam is leaching bad stuff. I know, that Americans still use styrofoam picnic cups, but it doesn’t make it right thing to do, both for environment and health. Even if you do use styrofoam cups to drink not hot beverages it is less harmful than let it sit in the pot mixed with fertilizers
Crunpled up newsoaper is much less toxic than styrofoam
Ah yes, toxic styrofoam used to help grow plant completely exposed and heated and leeching….
What I am growing in containers this year? 3 cherry tomato plants ( they love containers) , 2 brandywine tomatoes (not sure they like containers) , three pepper plants, swiss chard, 2 jalepeno peppers plants, lettuce . I plan on growing some carrots here as well.
"Screw what other people say about perfectionism." Agreed although I might use some more curse words during that sentence, I agree 100%. My wife loves leaf lettuce for salads. At 3-5 dollars a bag...and spending 10 bucks on seeds...I grew her around 40 large bags of salad this year...and the fall harvest isn't even going yet. I feel like I won this battle. Also, the seeds came from your store. 90% produced very, very well.

This is excellent for parrot and reptile owners who want to grow a variety of greens for their animals in a small space, can’t share this enough!
My container garden: Celery, Lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, spearmint, chocolate mint, lemon balm, and a strawberry hanging basket!
Love your vids! This was amazing!
I am also growing lettuce, spearmint, and chocolate mint. What do you use your mint for?
Best thing about living in a warm country - 12 months of good sunshine= 12 months of growing food, 12 months of fun and exercise.
I love his visible enthusiasm
I'm going to give it a try - I've been really hit or miss on lettuce & this looks like what I need - thanks man
Great series idea. I'm sure a lot of city/apartment dwellers appreciate it too.
indeed! "Blessings of Bounty and May Your Gardens and your Life always Bring You Joy,Inspiration and Abundance!" - Hope
You answer ever question I have. So greatful
Started growing lettuce in containers under a light in my apartment and get 1.5 pounds a week from the pot. Just started a new pot with chard and mesclun mixed with the romaine. Thanks.
Thank you very much for this video. I am a beginner gardener and I'm finding your videos extremely helpful. I just planted my lettuce seeds this afternoon. Many thanks from Canada.
Also from Canada, and just planted my lettuce seeds this afternoon too :)
Have decided to grow lettuce in containers in my warm tropical climate just because of this video! They can grow, albeit slowly in my part-shade garden/balcony since I was worried about the heat, rainy season rainfall, slugs, etc., but hey, they're growing!
Red leaf varieties didn't germinate at all though.
When they're around 5.5" tall/30 days old, they wilted after a day of not watering them (my schedule was watering every other day), so they seem to need everyday watering at that point, at least in my climate.
I am a begginer and planting all of my veggies from seed in containers along with companion herbs and flowers to help with pest control. I am using Coco Coir, Vermiculite and Worm castings as my starter soil.
Watching this again for the second time because I am going to do this, this year. Thank you Luke! ❤🙏
I made a little mixed lettuce bowl from a store bought cake container. I poked holes in the top if the bowl part, turned it upside down, put my soil and seeds in it. It was perfect because the bottom became a lid to keep the seeds moist while germinating.
Thanks for sharing. I just successfully learned how to collect blueberry seeds and germinate them.
Thank you! Just cut my first bowl of lettuce today and let me tell you, it has changed my life! Always thought I could never grow lettuce here in south Florida. But this method is amazing Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
Thanks Luke! Well, I've planted my seeds, and they're coming up pretty quickly. I've already passed your video on to a friend, so hopefully more of us urbanites will be successfully growing lettuce at home. You're a gem... thanks again.
I have a small space, and just started gardening. Lettuce in container is so satisfying to harvest.
Hi! For the past few weeks, I've been watching almost all of your videos and I just love them. I've learned so much, and I am now seriously obsessed with gardening. This growing season will be my second garden ever and I'm so excited it's ridiculous. I was wondering if you had any updates on this particular video topic? I've never seen another video with someone planting so many plants in about a square foot. I actually gave this method a go after watching this video and planted some arugula, corn salad, salad bowl lettuce, spinach, and red lettuce in two giant pots and I'm looking forward to eating delicious salads. I never had home grown leaves before to eat so I can't express enough the anticipation of my seeds germinating and taking off. So thank you so much for your inspiring channel.. they have really propelled me into my unknown passion for gardening. I never had something I was really into and could even be good at. I tried so many things out in my life, but gardening became very special to me and you and a bunch of other youtubers have inspired the hell out of me. Peace!
Welcome to the world of "compulsive gardening"!! Life is good. It's even better in the garden!!!! Enjoy!!!
Hi Emily, I feel exactly the same way. From no interest at all and all of a sudden a light switch turned on and now I'm unstoppable but with a degree of control. I also love to watch Calikim29 learned so much from her...I know your comment was posted 3 years ago but I hope all is well and your gardening still continues to take off. Happy gardening;)
@@RJweblink Same here!
I agree!! I started last year with just a couple flower or herb plants, and this year it’s my new-found passion in life 😍😍🥳🥳
love the video :P getting ready to show my daughter the essential life lessons of growing, harvesting, eating and sharing what you grow at home! From sunny San Diego - THANKS!
Worth the watch. ❤
Grow a few varieties from each different group of lettuce for added diversity.
select a mix of romaines, butterheads, loose-leaf and crisp-head types, etc.
new subscriber 👩🏽🌾cant wait for morning I'll be on the patio. planting a container full of lettuce. Thank you for being so informative.
Salad on the patio... brilliant!
So grateful for this series.
Thanks for all the great videos. your hard work is more than appreciated
Glad I found your channel. Learning so much! Didn’t think of that. I must try it. Thanks!!
I'll be trying this! Thanks for the tips.
Nice vid. Would love to see a followup one on when to harvest. what the lettuce looks like. Cause Im not sure. haha
How tall before harvest
E Worth great question. I have been wondering the same.
After about three weeks of growing you can start picking, you don’t need to wait until a head is formed. I harvested for the first time today and they’re all no more than 8 inches across. Just keep picking the outer leaves.
Just harvest the outer leaves or the biggest leaves if your not growing the heads.
Looks like lettuce. lol i am growing some in my front window this year as well.
Love the germination on the seeds I got from you guys, and since I am here in Wisconsin, knowing they came from and grew in a colder climate is a bonus. I figure they are raised pretty similar! Thanks again, I will definitely order more next year!
You are so amazing. I have started planting seedlings .Regards South Africa
Very interesting Luke. I'll try doing just that. 🙂 Thanks as always .
Thanks a lot! Loved your presentation and spirits!! going to plant my lettuce right now!
Thanks for making this video Luke, I only wish there was a more detailed walk through with a time-lapse maybe:)
This week I just start growing Romaine, Spinach, Bok Choy, Zucchini, Sweet Baby Watermelon (small sweet circular watermelon), Cucumber, Green & Red Grapes all store bought that I transplanted in pots.
I'm going to try growing Broccoli, Cauliflower, Kale, & Green Beans, Celery, Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, & yellow squash from seed in pots as well.
I've already successfully grown herbs, & many fruits such as strawberries, citrus trees, avocados, chilies, tomatoes and onions all in pots.
Thanks for this tips Luke 😊 I grow onions and peppers on containers cuz I don’t have a back yard it’s all cemented with the pool 1960’s I’m kinda stressed cuz I can’t even use any space in the front yard 😢I have to be neat and tidy doing my garden or else I get scolded. Thanks Luke 👩🌾👍♥️
watching your videos makes me feel like less of a dork, thank you
I have found that pests, especially slugs and cutworms, love baby lettuce and will destroy all you've worked for in a few hours; once the plants are bigger it's no longer a problem. The only solution I've found is to cover the container snugly at night with an appropriate sized plastic garbage bag. For day pests (like grasshoppers) cover with a fairly fine netting that will allow sunlight.
Great video! I'm adding lettuce and tomatoes to my container garden this year and this was helpful!
awesome! I so want to grow lettuce in containers to have fresh lettuce with my other garden harvests.
All of my gardening this year had to be done in containers on the small deck off my apartment. I am already growing tons of lettuce with this exact same method. I was able to buy several trough/rail planters to use for lettuce. Saves room on the deck for my tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. I'm also trying a zucchini, but I doubt it will be successful. Don't know unless I try. Great video as always - ill make sure to fertilize.
Well I loved it and I'm definitely gonna try this. Yes this episode inspired me of growing plants . Hope to c more videos from u
Great video, packed with tons of useful tips! Thanks a million!!
Just started a massive container garden for late fall winter. Was going to do lettuce in row containers but I'll save those for something else as this method seems to be more efficient. Very inspired by your content, thanks.
Thanks you I'm growing lettuce rite now I'm so excited. It taste so good.
This totally made my day, thank you so much I needed this!
awesome video! Cant wait for the other container videos! I have kale, spinach, bunching onion, snap peas and radish growing in containers currently. already have harvested a couple snap peas and a little bit of spinach. yum!
Love the containers
This was a super video, packed with information. Thank you!
It is such a delight to watch all your tutorials. You are soooo helpful and greatly knowledgeable . Love this! Starting some lettuce right now!
Thank you soooooo much for such a wonderful explanation and for remembering all the details like how/when to water and fertilize etc. This year I started for the first time in my life, having zero experience in gardening, a container garden and have already successfully killed cucumber plants (grew little plants from seeds myself, than replanted them to the raised bed and they died in 3 days...), my herbs in container are growing but too slow (probably also need fertilizer) and I have lettuce seeds but was hesitating to do anything because of disappointing experience with cucumbers :)
Again, thank you for the great video!
LOVE this new series, Luke! I'm growing habaneros, peas, pickle bushes from seed. all in my little grow box for a few more weeks. going to start pumpkins tomorrow so i'm excited
Looks very easy to do. I have not seen anyone do this before, thanks for the idea Luke. I will def give this a shot.
thank you for all your videos. I find them so helpful, and have made notes. I live in an apartment and decided to do some container gardening this summer for a past time, since I will be sticking around home for obvious reasons. thank you so much. Happy Gardening.
Keep on farming my brother jah., bless all
Just the video I was looking for, thank you!
Thank you! Definitely going to do this!
You inspired me Luke !!!.... going to get seed tomorrow & get on it right away as I need lots of greens for my chickens...Thank you!
Just planted my seeds! Thank you!
Thank you, this is a very informative video with absolute great growing tips from beginning to end. It has help me a lot from being a beginning gardener with my other veggies/fruit gardening. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you, Luke. This is so exciting, I'm really going to try to plant this way this year :-D
Thank you ! My daughter and I were successful with great lettuce plants grown in our pots - so easy... salad was yummy!
always love the old intro music
Thank you! Nice and simple
This is an awesome idea. We were just thinking of doing our lettuce in containers since the cabbage worms already decimated our spring mix that we planted in the raised bed. Thanks for the great video!
Great advise. I will be growing leaf lettuce in containers for 2020.
Thank you!! Ill be doing it in the morning!!!
My lettuce looks so good. Thank you for the video! I cant wait to eat a salad.
Interesting. I was taught not to crowd the container. I will have to try it with one or 2 containers this year. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for the excellent video! Looking forward to growing lettuce this way. 🙂
I am defenitely goin to look for a good soil to do this planting lettuce in a pot. now that the rainy season here in my country is fast approaching. thanks for this good info luke. keep it up.
Great video... thanks. After seeing this, I had planted my lettuce (Red and Green leaf) in pots. I'm excited to see the results... cheers!
I am growing three different types of lettuce in planters for the first time. The video was very informative and helpful. Thank you!
Despite having grown lettuce before, this would have never occurred to me. I am so pleased at finding the channel...as you can see I'm starting with stuff I can probably get started this year so everything doesn't have to wait on Scottish weather lol!
Your channel is amazing. Thank you for the tips and ideas.😊👍
Thank you for the demonstration and the video.
I'll try, thanks for sharing
I bought everything today and with your video im all set up for my lettuce .. Thank you
Awesome! you give the best garden ideas for those who live in the city. Very Interesting. All the best for your next series.
You really inspired me to grow this lettuce this summer.
Thank you for this enthusiastic video!
Great advice. Thank you!!
I tried this and it worked. Thanks
Inspired for me and my 12 yr old to to grow some lettuce in container on our patio👍Thanks!
You totally changed my thought process (not to mention my growing process) of lettuce! W-O-W! From the DFW Area ...
luke my family moved from a 1.5 acre property where I had a nice size garden ( 50ft by 75ft) to a house with only .25 acres which we can't have a garden out front so really it's only .125 of a acre I could plant so I decided to do a container garden and I watched your old videos and the one about the "super tomato soil" (I believe it's something like that) and I made soil up just like that and my patio garden is ridiculous how good it's growing, all my plants how doubled in size if not more and they only been in the containers for 3 weeks! my gardening skills definitely wouldn't be near where it is if it wasn't for your videos. keep up the good work!
Living on a farm, our manure compost pile is all we need for growing organic lettuce.
Thank you so much..going to try this out!
I am going to give container growing a try with lettuce and spinach.
I've basically been relegated to patio gardening. Because we've got to regrow the lawn where I had my garden growing. So this is perfect for me for the next two seasons. 😊
😗
What? They chose growing lawn from a veggie garden?
spongebobspongebob24 The majority of people who purchase homes don't want a big garden in the yard. So my husband is replanting lawn into the area that was my garden.
