  • Green skyscrapers have been all the rage in big cities, in a world of environmentally friendly and green living. The mega structures were meant to be the answer to our problems but there are some major engineering challenges that come with them, so why have they failed so far?

this analysis makes it very clear, that green skyscrapers are NOT a sustainable idea. Green roofs, might be a reasonable compromise, due to the cooling effects, accessibility, reduced weight, and easier maintenance.

t's implemented extensively in Singapore. Developers have to replace 100% of the green space the building occupies either thru green roofs or mid level terraces.

Green residential buildings are visually more pleasant to live amongst and reduce air-conditioning costs on primary heat walls, a10 story residential with green garden features on the street sides is going to be more pleasant to live with in a residential neighborhood .You don't need green balconies all the way up a 100 story building, what about having the gardens on the first 5 floors of a commercial building ? Each project is individual and costs and benefits need to be assessed individually insitu.

Well put! Better to have window shades, cross ventilation, good insulation and "Tri-Generation" energy [triple-generated energy]. Trees belong on the ground and need parks and forests to survive. OK as small pot plants, but otherwise ostentatious green-washing.

none of these are actual problems! every single one is already an issue that is dealt with... this is probably paid for by some industry who opposes the competition.

corrosive water is the enemy, and roots pry apart surfaces. Plants can grow large and heavy, and leafy trees can catch the wind. Imagine getting skewered by a branch falling 100 feet.

High maintenance nightmares is what they are. The additional weight has to be driving structural engineers nuts. Aerodynamisists the same due to the way foliage captures the wind. And lets chat a bit about all that nice corrosive fertilizer, water piping and demineralization costs for the water to keep the watering heads from clogging in a few months. And winterizing... have fun with that!
The people living in these things will have to be rich just to cover the additional maintenance costs!

I don't even think it looks good to cover a skyscraper in greenery like that. It looks post-apocalyptic, like humans have died off and nature has taken over again. It's nice to have tastefully included pieces of greenery that nicely decorate a building, but there is such a thing as too much just on an aesthetic level, before you even get to the practical concerns. I agree that it's better to just have more greenspace on the ground in between buildings. I love the "city in a forest" look, but the buildings themselves don't have to look abandoned and overgrown. What would be better is to use more visually pleasing architecture to beautify buildings, and keep more space for gardens and trees around the base. Put more trees around roads, and down the middle, turning more streets into beautiful boulevards. That'd be more effective for beautifying and greenifying cities than to stick trees all over skyscrapers.

Be interesting to see these buildings break apart from invasive roots getting into the super structure. 😂

I think CO2-footprint is just one aspect. It is also talked about the climate in the building and the urban climate.

    Hi there,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Aldie, a professional voice over talent who speaks fluent Indonesian.
I'm sure your videos will be more interesting to Indonesian viewers if they are delivered by a narrator in Indonesian. This of course also expands the reach of your videos.
That's why I'm interested in working with you.
    Can there be opportunities?
    Regards

2:15 "specialised irrigation systems are needed to keep the plants alive, raising concerns about water usage in urban settings" Do you really expect anyone to take your channel seriously after that statement?
