i struggled with weed- induced DP for 6 months after a bad high. it was the worst thing i’ve ever experienced and i wouldn’t with it on my worst enemy. there was a point where i didn’t know if i was truly going to be able to live with it. i have huge memory loss from that time but i remember how agonizing it was and i would come to this channel obsessively to learn everything i could and to find some hope. i would read the comments religiously looking for any one that may have made it through and was saddened to find so many disheartening comments abt ppl never getting better. if your looking for a sign or some hope, this is it. you will get better. it’s been 2 years since that era in my life and i’m doing just fine:) i do have episodes here n then but i have the mental tools to deal with them. you will be okay! you are safe! you are in control ! it rly will get better

Hi. I ve been having this condition for 8 months. It s been a non linear recovery process with many ups and downs. Lately I ve been getting a lot of deja vu, but they are nothing like those I ve had before. First a big wave of confusion is coming out of nowhere, and it feels like I m dead and the world looks so scary, then I get a deja vu and the feeling that the dp dr is ending and I am returning back to normal. Have you experienced this? Also, what Kind of diet will help me the most? I avoid sugar, dairy, gluten, but for 2 months I was eating only rice and fish and potatoes which I suspect are making my dp dr worse than it should be. I go to college, hang out everyday, I do everything it needs to be done, but food is the only thing that is dragging me down. It feels so frustrating. I really don t know what to do anymore.

i keep coming back to watch his videos bc he is so good at explaining it. you literally hit every single symptom i have had about this on the freaking head. Your story about looking at a puppy and how you felt in one of your videos was literally so spot on for me it’s insane. i’m 18, this summer i smoked for the first time and i’ve always had anxiety and depression, so when i got high the anxiety kicked in and i had the worse trip ever and the feeling of reality didn’t seem real at all. i was lucky to have my closest friends there with me to help calm me down. that was my first experience of DP. it lasted that whole day till i wasn’t high anymore. and didn’t think about it again. 2 and a half weeks ago i had a bad anxiety attack about how i thought i was dying and that triggered to me thinking about death, and what happens after death and then the question of reality set in and started the whole DP/DR episode. took me two weeks to look it up and find it has a name. and every since i knew it had a name and it wasn’t permanent and anxiety based and completely treatable, my worse days are behind me. i’ve had bad episodes since then but not as bad as before knowing that thinking i’m going crazy. i still think about it constantly but i can feel myself slowly getting better with it. today at baseball practice i actually had a good long time where it didn’t even cross my mind. i was just happy and living. i can see myself slowly getting these longer breaks where i don’t think about it. Since i genetically suffer with depression and anxiety problems i am back on my medication and should help a lot when it kicks in. but it is not needed for everyone by no means. i am sharing my story for all you young people out there and recent people that have come down with this. don’t feed into the fear. fear is food for DP. love y’all

I commented on a video of yours about my dp problem, and it seemed to clear a lot of things up. One of my main fears was that I was developing schizophrenia, and wouldn’t be able to return to normal and life a normal life like an average teen. This was one of the most scary thoughts because my aunt had schizophrenia, and died from it. I thought I had some genetic link to her metal illness, and I would end up like her. Thats what my first panic attack was about. Those thoughts calmed down, but I still always had that feeling in the back of my head that I was going nuts. Then I discovered your website and RUclips page, and I felt a lot better, then though the thoughts came back because I was still so shocked that last year I was a normal kid and now I have this thing called dp that is destroying my life. I am going through puberty, which could be the cause of my anxiety and this. But the big question I have is if the stressor or accumulator of stress is still going on that causes dp like social anxiety at school, could that possibly make the dp stay if your always having anxiety, and is it possible for it to be schizophrenia due to gienets??? I know I probably sound like alot of the people you talk to be it would be nice to get over this.

The fact that you are asking if you are schizophrenic is a pretty good indicator that you aren't. I go through the same thought cycle though. You aren't alone in this way of thinking. Take some breaths and try and redirect your thoughts. Ask yourself often "is this a rational thought, or an I letting my anxiety take control?"

Also brother, mental illnesses are suppressions of emotions. If you tell yourself you have something then you will get it. That’s how the mind works. On a side note, I believe on a spiritual level/consciousness schizophrenia is when you remember your past life 👀

Don't worry you'll be fine. I first experience it when I was 23. I was sleeping in a hotel in Dallas having few hours to sleep before an Interview as a truck driver. One hour or two I woke up dazed and confused like if I was not real and my heart started to race because I knew I wasn't feeling normal how I supposed to. I was about to call 911 but instead I called my mom and told me I was fine that It's just a panic attack. Second time that it happened to me I was 25, I was just on my computer doing homework and out of nowhere I felt weird like if I was not real and having existential thought of my surroundings and myself. Went to the ER and they said nothing was wrong with me after they done blood work and ct scan me. It lasted about 2 months. Right now I'm feeling like this but not intense as I used to, I do get intrusive existential thoughts and about afterlife but I try my best not to scare myself. I have it now like 6 months.

I lived with my mom in 2020-2022. I got bullied, fat shamed, racist name calling , other stuff that I don't wanna say, and when I tried reaching out to her for help she basically left me on my own. So I sat in my room 24/7 day dreaming and thinking of the bad stuff that happened to me. Overtime I noticed that things just seem more foggy. Like I'm in a dreamlike state. I'm living with my dad now but I'm so tired of feeling this way. I can't get over the things that happened to me when I was living with her because they gave me PTSD. So I'm stuck in this constant loop of thinking of what happened, and how bad life was when I lived there, and I have a bad habit of daydreaming and thinking of random things. It's like I'm living in my head and the world around me is fake. What should I do?

Hey Shaun, I just wanted to say that I suffered from DP and I’m getting better and better everyday! But I just wanted to say that the only thing that I’m having a little trouble getting through is the place where this entire thing started was my home. But the point is sometimes I feel like I’m getting flashbacks to it because it’s the same floor same walls same furniture where it all happened. So I just wanted to say to you how do you overcome it and any helpful tips? I really appreciate you and how you take the time to educate us.

Hi Axel -- Don't worry, it's very common for certain places or environments to trigger feelings of anxiety. I know it can be frustrarting but it will fade away and stop as your recovery continues. Head over to my website at www.dpmanual.com, there’s tons of info and tips on DP recovery there 😊

I had a bad trip with LSD in the mid 90's. It was horrific, i had thuds in my head, the world kept closing in on me in seconds repeatedly plus other bad symptoms. Ever since that day I have suffered with anxiety and for some strange reason I am now frightened to death of deep bass sounds or loud thuds for example a car door slamming. I'm 52 now and my life has and still is a misery as everyday I feel I'm going to have that bad trip again. I need help as I think I'm mentally ill :(

Hey Paul, thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear you've been having a difficult time. Remember that, as I explain in the video, it's not technically the drug that triggered the anxiety condition, but your body and brain's response to what it perceived to be a dangerous situation at the time. No matter how long it's lasted or what caused it, you can and will recover completely. And yes, absolutely, if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DP. @paul A, as Shaun mentions in his audiobook, it's really a habit of mind. I had the same issue with being in nature it would freak me out and I would think I was going to have a panic attack. I religiously followed the instructions in the book and every time that the thought would come to me when I was in nature, I would immediately distract myself. Over time, it slowly and slowly started to subside and the thought pattern disappeared. Now I think back about it, I know it used to happen but I no longer have the same reaction to it and I can't even comprehend why it was happening.

Hi Shaun, thanks for your videos and manual on how to get over this disorder. I have a question that seems to get overlooked a lot. I have bad dpdr with anxiety the last 2 years since a panic attack. But I also developed intense 24/7 headaches along with the dpdr and I feel this is preventing me to recover. To the point that I even question whether the headaches are actually causing a lot of my dpdr. It seems that when my migraines get worse so does my dp. I don’t know how to tackle this issue, as only « distracting yourself from the dp » seems to not be enough for me. Any thought on this? Thanks again

Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DP can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com

My sence of time was even distorted. I felt like I was living in a dream. Mine was brought on by a major panic attack being caused by a very stressful yr due to family stress/trauma. The panic attack was my breaking point and then here came all the anxiety/dpdr/depression etc.. I felt like I was going crazy. Went to dr after dr. Finally got under a pyschiatrist and he gave me 10 mg lexapro, buspar to take daily and 15 mg remeron for sleep and to regain my appetite bc I had lost soo much weight! I am still on these meds and they wrk great. I was medicated enough to keep the panic attacks away but not so medicated to where I couldn’t wrk on myself. I ordered the dp manual and it taught me alot and made me feel better I also listened to some Claire Weekes stuff on youtube and it helped. Just know that the more u focus on it the more its gonna be there. They all say accept accept accept. U have to accept that its there but u dont have to like it. I'm currently doing CAT therapy and my therapist is really pushing the angle that bereavement a year before the cannabis, and my relationship to death and mortality thereafter, are what primed me for the derealisation and keeps it going. It's hard to see because I've always seen it as cannabis induced, and maintained by the terror i now have around some existential questions. Does anyone else think that other traumas in life are connected in this indirect way?

Secondly, remember that ultimately DP and DR are both symptoms of anxiety, and that in order to get rid of them you do need to address and understand both properly, and the underlying anxiety that’s causing them 😊 Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/depersonalization-and-derealization-whats-the-difference/

I took mdma and smoked weed to calm down. Scared to death and thought I was going insane. Since then I've had a constant headache, which has gotten a little milder now. After 3 weeks the first panic attack came. I feel disconnected and things I used to enjoy are no longer fun. Obsessive thoughts about the condition. About brain damage, this condition will remain forever and so on. It's been almost 3 months now. How common are constant headaches in dp/dr?

    • @Dpmanual
      @Dpmanual  2 года назад +1

Hey Alexandra, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DP can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time.
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DP.

I did have a concussion 2 years ago but the dpdr did not start happening to me until 3 months after the accident and I'm still experiencing this year's later. Is concussion based dpdr recoverable as well?

I had some hash brownies a month ago (never had them before). Then I had a huge huge panic attack (felt like I was dying/having a seizure and heart attack all at the same time). This lasted for 2-3 hours.
I felt like I’ve been in a dream for the past 2 weeks. Then I had another panic attack which bought on intrusive thoughts and even severe feelings of being in a dream.
Now I feel like I’m not even alive and I am petrified I’m brain damaged. Don’t feel like my family or friends is real or my house.
I suffer from anxiety and intrusive thoughts. as it is. I feel like I’ve just lost it and will be stuck like this forever. I feel like I’m brain dead. I don’t want to live like this anymore.

Feelin great, I had to go easy on myself and went with anti anxiety pills like cipralex but in general it helps to control the symptoms, overtime the symptoms really do go away... And it's strange... Especially my field of view and so on and so forth. A very strange condition but I must say: it seems to be possible to recover from this. I think I'm in the final stages? Im more light headed now which is good, you know I don't think too much about anything, just rolling with these symptoms right now, they just become weaker and weaker. Although I wonder Shaun, does it really go away? Isn't it natural to have this all the time but just not like a train on fire but as if just going for a walk that can't you notice it at all?
