      Our family lived between 1958 & 1959 in Zimbabwe & my sister & I were each given a (Rhode Island Red) day-old chick. When they reached the laying stage my sister's bird would faithfully once a week lay a double- yolked egg. I'd be able to pick up my chick from small and rock her from side to side & she'd extend her neck in the same movement 🐓we also had white leghorns & blue & white speckled chickens (like a Plymouth Rock ) The butcher & baker & grocer would send their man on a bicycle hawking their wares as we were nowhere near any shops. From our backyard down to the servants quarters was a beaten path past the chicken run with several large mulberry trees. Your videos & vlogs brought the memories flooding back so i just had to share with you.

    Re: chickens sleeping in the nesting boxes. I’ll bet it’s because at Little Cog there was a floor while it’s only a screen at the 40. They felt closed in and safe at the Little Cog so they’re looking for that same feeling by going in the nesting boxes.

    • @dorothyallen3614
      @dorothyallen3614 2 года назад +4

      Ooo, might be right! I thought there might be a light shining on the roosts and they’re going in the boxes for darkness 🤷‍♀️, something is not right for them for sure.

    • @amethysteyes62

      I agree, at the little cog it was a solid floor. Maybe they feel a draft with the open floor.

    Place a line above your clothes line to hang CDs or bird tape over. Your flags might work to deter birds. Solar lights will deter deer at night if placed close to the CDs due to flashing.

    As Jason from Pedals said the crabapple pollinates the apple trees. Crabapple tree's size can be controlled by pruning. They are so beautiful in the spring! It all depends on you. Jason also said that the mulberry tree can be planted away from the other trees as far back to the fence line or tree line. You don't have to plant it by the clothesline. Wild birds will eat wherever they please and poop wherever they please. That is something that man has no control over.

    Kevin and Sarah at Living Traditions Homestead put up a double-row fenced moat around their orchard last season .It seems to work because the deer can figure how to miss the inner fence. Maybe you could watch their RUclips.

  • @pamelaroden5513
    @pamelaroden5513 2 года назад +10

    No , it's just 2 fences about 5 feet or so apart, it just keeps the deer from being able to jump over because they can't judge the fence that way. They keep the ducks and chickens in between as a run.

    When I was a kid we had a "banty rooster" that had a beautiful tail that curled up over his back. One day I watched him going into the cow pasture and catch his tail on the hot wire. He went squawking across the field and then came back to see what bit him, walked under the fence and did the same thing again. I don't remember how many times he did it but it continued for a while before he gave up.

    FYI : living traditions "moat" is just two 5' (guessing height) fences with about 4' apart around the perimeter . They said having two fences opposed to one taller fence was cheaper. It prevents the deer from getting in because the deer have a depth perception problem when you do that. They keep their ducks and chickens in that "moat" area.

    Living traditions used a double fence around their orchard, two fences six feet apart to keep the deer out. The deer apparently won't try to jump that large a gap. It's not a ditch. They actually have penned their chickens and ducks in that space between the fences, so they essentially have deer protection and a large chicken run! 2 for one!

      Check out solar generators, then you don't have to go looking for fuel. You just put the panels into the sun and plug into the generator - super easy and you can put the panels outside and keep the generator in the house without safety issues. I bought a Rockpals generator and solar panels after watching a bunch of RUclips reviews.

    I use cinder block with the block cap for my raised beds. It's cheaper than wood and you never have to replace them. Also if you want to relocate them, it's easier. I have (3) 30' purple mulberry trees. It's a lot of picking! The neighbors and I benefit greatly from it.

      Yes, and you can get the mower in there also and no freeze water spicket for the garden area. They’re getting ready to move everything to the new farm like CHF and sell the old homestead, it’s exciting to watch all the homesteads and farm families, so proud of all of y’all and what you’re teaching us.

    Yes, Jason, you pronounced ‘potager’ perfectly!!! 😊 A Mulberry tree in the chicken pasture would be ideal! How nice to have MayCarl on the vlog with adorable Tiny Tim!!! 😊 Brooke, I love how you share something you are thankful for--we should all do this! I feel for the loss due to tornadoes--and lives lost. Such a tragedy. Heartbreaking. I hope they recover more peoplevalive!

    I’m so anxious for your gardens…all of them. Since I don’t have a place to grow anything, I’m doing this with you. When you were talking about the moat and the chickens and ducks and birds…why not make a castle shaped chicken coop/bird sanctuary with a moat with a drawbridge door for the feathered friends? TY for letting Marycarl share her knowledge with Tiny Tim.

    Mary Carl, tiny Tim is just fabulous! I love how his wings go downward. Very striking. And it looks like he's kissing your Dad! I used to have some parakeets that would fly around in the house and land on my shoulders to give me kisses and talk to me to get treats. ❤️

    Yes Living Traditions. There fence is like a double fence. A wide lane that the use to keep the deer out. They run the chickens and ducks in this run. Clever idea.
