Justin, you have a stunning gift for digging deep with your questions. It’s a testament to your listening skills as well as your skills as a compassionate human. Wishing you so much luck with these interviews - they’re as beautiful as everything else you’ve created thus far. 🙌🏾🙏

My older brother once told me that you will have the longest relationship with siblings. Longer than your parents, spouse and children. Interesting that in high school he had this perspective. We are still close even though we don’t live in the same city.

And it's terrible when they are separated to grow up separately like after a divorce for example.

Rebecca, what’s with looking at the phone while others were telling heart felt life stories. Leave the phone in the kitchen next time. 😔

It was similar for me. I lived in an upscale neighborhood in an expensive suburb of Chicago with a huge lawn that got treated each season. And then I started having a veggie garden which grew every year, and then the chickens came, and it went from there. People thought that I went crazy or something. I was like Roy Neary in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" by Steven Spielberg. I had a vision and it was so clear. This was many years ago and I no longer live there but I still have that vision and it's crystal clear.

Great conversation, please post more of these!
Seeing more normal people expressing their desires to start farming like this, and finding success, makes me feel less crazy for having similar dreams 😆
I feel like there is something lost in translation during the conversation about not seeing color. I got the impression that Paige interpreted the phrase literally, while Justin was discussing it metaphorically.
I have always thought about the term in a metaphorical sense. Of course everybody sees color, but the goal is not to prejudge someone based on that observation.
I don't think kids "see" color in the sense that they just see a human with a different skin color and they don't have any learned experiences that inform them to think or act differently around that person.
It's like when a kid sees a white dog or a black dog, they observe the color of the dog, but they don't act differently. No matter the color they are likely going to act the same way towards the dog.
Prejudice is learned. From parents, direct experience, or more likely media in the modern world. I think this is why it is so important to expose kids when they are still in that early "color blind" stage to a diverse range of people, they can meet and understand individuals based on personal experiences instead of learning to put people in categorical boxes based on how they are portrayed in the media.
If Drew had heard that black people don't like camping he may never have asked Derrick to go with him. Attempting to not see color is an attempt at erasing prejudices we all have and trying to treat people as individuals instead of as part of a group with consistent views and behavior.
As an aside, it was rude to be texting during an interview like this. I'm guessing it was important, but it came across as disinterest, especially without some sort of acknowledgement or apology.

These blog-cast/vlog-casts are great! One of the nice things about them is that I can watch the entire content over a couple of sittings - or not. Yes, I watched this one from start to finish. They were quite engaging, not afraid to open up. I find a vlog-cast better than a typical blog-cast because you can watch the people - you know, non-verbal communication is so valuable.

I truly can't find pride in something I had nothing to do with...Like being proud to be a certain race, of a specific family, or gay (since they say they're born that way).
I take pride in my actions and my children...That's it.

i was born intto a farming/homestead family, stolen by the state at a young age and sent to a boarding school as a young white teen, called Whites Institute in Wabash Indiana, where i cleaned the bathrooms of a black church, and while listening to the choir for two straight years, and so as an adult, white music is not music to me...

JUSTIN , GREAT VIDEO !! THE PERCEPTION ABOUT PRIDE BEING A NEGATIVE THING IS DUE TO SCRIPTURE THAT NEVER SAYS ANYTHING POSITIVE ABOUT BEING PROUD OR HAVING PRIDE, IT ONLY SAYS BEING PROUD AND HAVING PRIDE IS ALWAYS A NEGATIVE THING AND THAT GOD HATES A PROUD LOOK AND THAT PRIDE COMETH BEFORE A FALL.

Beautiful interview and so enjoyable to listen to. I had a thought while listening; when his friends told him she was out of his league, they were really projecting their image of themselves onto him. They didn’t think they deserved her, and they were his friends, so therefore they told him he didn’t deserve her. Funny how words from our friends can sear us to our core and form our image more so than the positive reinforcements we get from our family. Don’t worry, my friend, you are deserving. You both are kind, introspective and lovable. Best of luck to you and your family.
