Those soldiers at the Tomb for the Unknown are very special and its an extreme honor to be one of them. They are there 24/7 rain, shine, snow, hurricanes. It doesn't matter. They serve always.
First hand account. My better half and I lived in Arlington, Va. close to Clarendon for 20 years (she longer.) We were Gov't contractors working in McLean, Va. On 9/11/2001 we left work early and drove home after hearing about the planes going into the WTC and Pentagon (and also the field in Pennsylvania). Had some difficulty getting home because the police had a lot of the streets into Arlington blocked off and if you ever have seen a map of Arlington you would realize what a mess and what a feat it was for them to be able to do that. They were only letting people who lived in Arlington through. Of course, that day I had driven my car with the 'Texas' plates (another story) and I still had a Texas driver's license. My SO had her license though and after a few moments of pleading we were let through. We made it home and then walked to the Pentagon. We lived about 1.5 miles from it. We ended up in a clearing area that overlooked the building. The Air Force monument is there now, but it was still open space then. When we got there we looked down at the gapping hole still smoldering from the attack. The first responders were Arlington fire departments due to the fact the Pentagon is located in Arlington. Firefighters were crawling all over the wood and tar roof putting out small fires by then. An American flag was put up by the firefighters and was hanging from the roof to the right of the large gash. We weren't the only ones there in fact there were a lot of people there and on Southgate rd (maybe) they had staged ambulances in case they found anyone alive in the wreckage. One gentleman got there shortly after the attack and stood on the hill with a large American flag. People would on occasion go up to him and hold the flag so he could take a brief rest. After a while of standing there in solemnity, we walked back home. The following year on 9/11, we took off from work early again and walked the same path to where we stood one year earlier. By then they had rushed construction on the Pentagon and the visible signs of the attack had all but disappeared. We decided this time instead of walking back the way we came, we would go around Arlington Cemetery, and home that way. Mistake. There are no sidewalks on 110 but we persevered and ended popping up close the the Netherlands Carillon area where many people were gathered for the one year anniversary of the attack. Some how or another we popped out of a ditch and right where a bunch of limousines and SUVs were and just in time for a tall, kind of skinny important guy getting out of the limo. We said hi and he said hi and we went over to the ceremony. As we were walking I said to my SO, "Who was that guy?" and she said she didn't know. So we sat down and about that time the ceremony began and they had dignitaries and local historians talking about the events on that fateful day. And then the Governor of Virginia was introduced and it was the guy we had sort of popped in on. Gov. Mark Warner (now Senator Mark Warner) of Virginia. Boy we miss that area. Sorry for the long winded comment.
I'm Canadian but truly enjoyed this historical vlog. The changing of the guard was so powerful. Even the Canadians needs to be grateful to the American soldiers and vets for all the peace they keep around the world. Thank you for sharing. It was very moving.
I have lived an hour from DC my whole life and when I have to go there, it's something I absolutely dread. The traffic and parking is just insane and my anxiety definitely takes over. I am so impressed with how you guys have navigated your visit so smoothly. I am embarrassed to say I've never been to a majority of the places you went to and some I didn't know you could visit or that these places existed. Thank you for sharing this with us. As a local to the area I can see I haven't appreciated the city as much as I should. Hope it was a wonderful experience!
Wow! My first visit was in 1969, at 14. I was moved and mesmerized by everything: the Capitol, Arlington, the Smithsonian, etc. So thankful for what D.C. represents. Sure wish I lived as close as you do. I'd be exploring constantly!
I’m not even American (Canadian here), but I found this video very moving! Looking forward to seeing your New England travels. We are just north of Maine in New Brunswick, Canada, and are occasional weekend warriors. I have an elderly parent and several grandkids, so no plans to travel full time at this point, but you never know what the future holds. Safe travels!
Glad you and your pooch did not get hurt. I have a dog bite attack and my 14 year old dog Sugar has too. She gets frightening every time and shakes when growling occurs. Glad you had fun in DC. Need to take our 16 yr old daughter. She missed her 8th grade trip in school due to covid.
In Australia, we look after not only our military personnel, but their partners and children for life. Free health services and a military pension for the rest of their lives. We have deep respect for all our veterans.
Yes! The constitution is so simple a document, the layperson can understand it. It’s simple language and very clear on how our country is supposed to function. Glad to see y’all didn’t get stuck in the “swamp”!
Love watching your videos! My husband and I are planning full time in a couple years when he retires. We moved to DC about 4 years ago for his job transfer, so it was fun seeing your video in DC!
Loved it ! Just a thought, I have been involved with dogs my whole life and have learned a great way to cool them down. Take a towel (dish towel) soak it with water, ring it out then place it on the dogs back. Really helps !

We visited Washington DC 40 years ago so some of the museums you visited like the Holocaust and the Spy Museum weren't even there. We did visit Arlington National Cemetery and the Jefferson Memorial. Great for your kids to learn history this way.
Great video, thanks for bringing us all along on your trip! Arlington National Cemetery - solemn, respectful. The dogs that attacked you should NOT be allowed in an RV park. Period. Washington DC is a place every American needs to visit.

I agree that every American should visit Arlington Cemetary..it's an emotionally reality of how many have paid the ultimate price for freedoms we take for granted.
You should have gone inside the Jefferson building of the Library of Congress. It is absolutely gorgeous and they give a very informative tour. Also, the Spy Museum is very cool, but it's expensive. Next trip. You did a lot of very educational and fun things this one. Thanks for sharing!
Great video of DC. Love seeing the kids learning and interacting. When you are ready to come to Arkansas to get your sticker- we have a very cool place for you to park & stay! So much to see & do in NW Arkansas- it’s a combo of Oregon & the Black Hills of South Dakota. A lot of cool history here as well! God Bless!

Just an idea, if you ever get the chance, try Harrisville State Park in Harrisville Michigan. It's in the shore of Lake Huron with lake side sites. Small Town but a great park!
See now if you had let me know you were coming, I could I have I given you some "anytime" tickets to the USHMM so you could go in any time as I used to be a docent there. You showed the Whittington Falkenberg's .... they were our portrait clients and we had just done their family portraits as they were going to Australia for a year sabitical .... which is why they were on the plane and if I remember correctly, they were the only fully family that was killed on 9/11. I was also a first responder to the Pentagon as a paramedic so obviously that place is very special to me for a number of reasons. If you come back again, please go see the memorial at night ..... it is stunning at night. Also ... little tidbit in case you didn't realize it .... the benches are faced in different directions. The ones facing the the Pentagon were those on the plane. Those facing away from the Pentagon were those in the building.

Went to DC in 2019 for our daughter’s UM MBA graduation. Walked 9 miles one day and 10 miles another loved all the history and got to go inside the White House. Our SIL is now stationed at the Pentagon (Space Force) so we can’t wait to go back next summer.
We live in Central Florida as well and are just beginning the RV life in our 70’s as we receive our first TT Wednesday. My daughter lives in Alexandria and before grandkids we got to get some sightseeing in of DC. Truly amazing- even Old Town Alexandria has quite a history. Anyways glad we got to visit because since grandkids came into the picture ( and Covid) the only place we have gone in recent trips has been Mt. Vernon which I recommend. Anyways, I loved to know what RV park you guys are staying at in the DC area and what your quick review of that would be? Have fun, Larry
Hey Larry, we stayed at Capitol KOA in Maryland (link in the description). We’ve stayed there twice now, it’s a nice campground, about a 30 min drive to the metro station. Not cheap, but not much in that area is inexpensive.
Do you have ideas for New Hampsha’. ? What you want to see? Fun for the kids? Beautiful water spots and mountains. Diana’s Bath for sliding on rocks swimming hole (if there is still enough water), The Flume ( beautiful), Kancamangus Highway…
My brother in law was working general Shelton . My brother in law was running late work plan hit just before he pull up. Shelton mother was teacher were I live .20 miles from were I live .. they just redoing office alone it went into what had been there office. Thank God they were redoing office.
Tell all the homeless veterans how honored they are in D.C. I'm sure they would love to hear that as they are sleeping on the streets after the country they fought for dumped them after stabbing them in the backs. The biggest shame of this country is the millions of homeless veterans.
My little miniature poodle was attacked in a TTrails park by a German Shepherd, 4 broken ribs and a punctured lung. No recourse we paid the bill and was glad we still have our beautiful poodle. Be very careful when walking your dog.
Tell him not to feel bad....I had made muffins for breakfast, preparing for an outing to the local zoo. Nice day right? Left the oven on. Came home to the worse smoke you've ever seen. And I was home. Had time to check. Just forgot.
I accidentally kicked my iPhone out of the car at the Thorp Fruit and Antique store in Thorp, Washington! My hubby and I were on our way from Seattle to Missoula, Montana! Thankfully I realized the phone was missing near Vantage, Washington and we were able to turn around at Vantage. Hubby had called them and someone had found it in the parking lot and turned it in! I knew it was still there because the find my iPhone function was on. It took an extra hour but we got my phone back in one piece! 😂. Hubby’s had one run over before! Oh wait, he ran it over himself! 😂 😂 Thankfully that was a cheap phone!
Hope you can make it to and stay in Connecticut for a bit. Believe it or not, there are interesting things to do and see that may not be are grand as Washington D.C.but are still interesting. Ct. seems to be a drive through state for those going to Massachusetts or other New England States, but it is a beautiful state to visit. Enjoy your travels.
This was so informative and fun. I absolutely love D.C. Was first at Arlington just after RFK was assassinated. I was 14. At that time, almost everyone dressed in their church best when visiting D.C. Everything about our nation's Capital is moving, especially because of what it represents. Thanks for taking us along!
I'm really sorry to see how you don't seem to know your dog very well. That excessive shaking and panting is a sign of great stress, trauma and anxiety, no doubt from being attacked by two dogs. Suggest you keep a bottle of Rescue Remedy on hand for him, and anyone else who might have a traumatic experience. It's awful to have our furbabies in distress and this formula works quickly and very well on both animals and humans alike.
I love ALL of New England. Lived in MA, and visited most of the northeast while there. Maine is fabulous. Spent time on Vinal Haven island. Don't know if I've spelled the name correctly.
Sadly the living veterans don't seem receive the respect those that have been killed have when you hear about the stories of what veterans sometimes have to go through to get the benefits they have earned. Lets hope that is corrected soon.
Can't help but notice, you seem to be 'boycotting' Arkansas. Each time you show the map, it's quite obvious. As a fellow camper, wondering why? Is it that bad? ...Edit... I watched the remainder of the video and, yeah, "don't ask me how" did you all completely miss it? :-)

DC and the National Mall. The place every MD child goes to on school field trips yearly.

I knew it was still there because the find my iPhone function was on. It took an extra hour but we got my phone back in one piece! 😂. Hubby’s had one run over before! Oh wait, he ran it over himself! 😂 😂 Thankfully that was a cheap phone!

Hope you can make it to and stay in Connecticut for a bit. Believe it or not, there are interesting things to do and see that may not be are grand as Washington D.C.but are still interesting. Ct. seems to be a drive through state for those going to Massachusetts or other New England States, but it is a beautiful state to visit. Enjoy your travels.

This was so informative and fun. I absolutely love D.C. Was first at Arlington just after RFK was assassinated. I was 14. At that time, almost everyone dressed in their church best when visiting D.C. Everything about our nation's Capital is moving, especially because of what it represents. Thanks for taking us along!

We didn’t on this trip but we also visited DC three years and hit all of those memorials on that trip.

I'm really sorry to see how you don't seem to know your dog very well. That excessive shaking and panting is a sign of great stress, trauma and anxiety, no doubt from being attacked by two dogs. Suggest you keep a bottle of Rescue Remedy on hand for him, and anyone else who might have a traumatic experience. It's awful to have our furbabies in distress and this formula works quickly and very well on both animals and humans alike.

Sadly the living veterans don't seem receive the respect those that have been killed have when you hear about the stories of what veterans sometimes have to go through to get the benefits they have earned. Lets hope that is corrected soon.

The dog issue is not cool! Vicious dogs shouldn’t be allowed in any RV Park, Campground, etc. those dogs should be reported!
