@@lukebradford everything about the book is "nerdvana"... from Dungeons and Dragons to Wil Wheaton (who actually reads the book on Audible) to Blade Runner...
I still can’t get over how no one went backward in the race. IN 5 YEARS, That shit would of been cracked in the first 15 minutes. Also the book first challenge was much better, you had to beat a Draugh at an arcade video game.
Although in the book, it's kind of hard to believe that with all the Gunters searching Arcade, not a single one of them noticed Happy Time Pizza. Not a single on the the millions of Gunters noticed an exact recreation of Haliday's favorite childhood pizza place, and thought, "hm this might be important."
@@awesomepork101 yeah, that sounds accurate. There were most likely a dozen gunters who went into HappyTime Pizza but overlooked the Pac-Man machine because it was out of order. Wade only went to it because he wondered why it was out of order. It was a split second choice.
Ok, when halliday said "if you look under your chair you'll find that there's nothing there" I'll say that was the funniest moment in the entire movie. Let me repeat, that was the funniest moment in the entire movie.
@@connorgolsong290, yeah I loved the book but when I watched the movie for shits and giggles (I had no faith that it was going to be even just partly accurate) I was furious at how much they fucked up. Like dude, 99% of the movie is animated and the book is already amazing, WTF DID YOU MASSACRE MY CHILD!
Wade with no money, irl friends or girlfriend: Life sux, the only thing there is to do is the oasis, people have friends and lives there. Super rich wade with irl friends and a girlfriend: Life is pretty good so we should spend less of it in the oasis. He forgot where he came from in a second.
Just as he forgot that his aunt blew up. He only mentions it once saying "my mom's sister". Yes Z, that's your aunt. I mean, the actors are not bad, they are clearly trying but the film is weirdly written or a ton is cut from it.
6:41 I know a lot of people don't, but I love this scene. The fact Nolan and his executives are so chill about inducing seizures on people is hilarious to me.
Wade in Ready Player 2: I'm okay with people, including myself, getting brain damage if it means they can experience things they'll never afford in real life.
seizures aside, who would want to continue playing with 80% screen covered in commercials, we get extremely annoyed when 1 advertisement is breaking our streak of concentration already...
18:35 very true. In the book, the coin is on top of a pac man game, a way of reserving it back in Halliday's time. When parzival tries to remove it, it's stuck. He plays a perfect game of pac man, with maximum points, and then the coin falls off. It's stuck in his inventory, and he can't examine it, and therefore doesn't know it gives him a second life. That's how he got the coin in the book, and I totally agree it was much more satisfying
Yeah, I listened to the full Audiobook and it was really satisfying to just listen too over the course of a few days bingeing it. My favorite part is when Wade lets himself be turned into an indentured servant as a consultant for idiots in order to hack into IOI's database via a bunch of backdoors he got knowledge of via a turncoat programmer.
@@merchantziro4285 that part was great. the book was so much more dark than the movie, it's a missed opportunity IMO. the setting, daito being murdered by IOI, the modern slaves, blowing up Wade's home, those we're the things that made Sorento evil, not "we want to make Oasis pay to win" bullshit
@@segevkrespi8609 Yeah, that's true. The movie is still great though and it's fun to see how many references and pop culture icons you can spot in the background.
Felt like half the sins were for things that they had addressed in the books. Why could you get attacked in the club? Cause it was in a PvP area, which made it risky and exclusive. Why are there portals? Cause it cost money/resources to travel between worlds. Why wouldn't multiple arcade cabinets spawn? They did in the book. Why could you approach the character doing the final challenge? You couldn't, entering a portal was a single-player thing. Why were there cans of soda sitting around? It was about creating a realistic atmosphere you could brag about. Etc. Etc.
5:50 My big problem is not even that no one figured out that clue from that, I have a problem that no one just randomly tried going backwards for fun. I mean seriously, when a new game comes out all it's secrets are discovered by someone in a week. There are people who try EVERYTHING. This should not have taken years to figure out something as simple as going backwards.
personally, i after trying for countless times, i know i would have tried driving backwards; in some games, going backwards results in awesome glitches or easter eggs
Well you can't simply turn your car around and go the opposite direction. He had to know to actually drive backwards. There was probably many people who tried going the reverse way, but the course didn't open because they weren't specifically going backwards the entire time so everyone dismissed it. But Wade knew it required driving backwards not just going in the reverse direction. Which is how one of the players wrecked his car.
It pissed me off that just because now he’s rich and has a hot gf means that everyone spends too much time in the oasis, like, he used to and so manny others play it to escape the terror of reality but now he has a perfect life it doesn’t matter everyone should be happy
Yes. The whole reason the uncle got so pissed at the beginning was because he had planned to pay for a house or something with the reward. So, it's implied that several people make their living, or at least some large amount of money off of the Oasis. They just cut people off from two days worth of work.
@@yeastling7199 Well, yeah, and that is wrong, but the point is that it's adding a motive for those people to get a source of income in the real world. It's to add a motive for people to actually have a good life in the real world.
I'm still in the middle of the book that this movie was based on and its mindblowing how they just skimmed over the world-building and changed the ENTIRE egg hunt, literally the entire plot. they changed the answers, the riddles, they took out a whole SUBSECTION of it. jesus. theres also multiple spielberg references in the book. i guess steven really liked his references.
Yeah, just finished the book. The production team took the book around back behind the shed, n' hacked it to pieces. Then put it back together with other random references, to make this Frankenstein, lol.
The saddest part is they changed the Hunt's premise. In the book you need to know 80's trivia to solve the riddles because Halliday loved the 80's. But in the movie you have to know Halliday Trivia. which is dumb. and is more akin to the books sequel, Ready Player Two. You dont get that joyous feeling of solving the riddle With the characters because the information is based on something you cannot know about in our world.
Ready Player One should have been a trilogy. Ready Player One: The Copper Key Ready Player One: The Jade Key Ready Player One: The Crystal Key. They really missed a golden opportunity.
The fact that the first clue is to go backwards at the start, and no one figured it out for years is a massive sin. People do that shit in normal racing games, never mind when you are trying to solve a puzzle in race no one can win
unicorn sprinkles I refuse to believe out of all the players no one thought "Fuck it, I'm gonna go backwards to see what happens since I can't cross King Kong anyways"
actually this reminded me of a game on kongregate, flight, where you have to throw a paper plane. The top rated comment says: "Everyone said don't throw it backwards. So first thing I did was throw it backwards. Second thing I did was restart my browser."
"Hey, he didn't count to three!" That is actually a sin. He shall count to three, not four, and not two, unless immediately followed by the number three.
Ready Player One: Nerdy fanBoi joins up with his lesbian homie, a Twitch streamer, a power ranger and an edgy boi in order to do a series of easter eggs to gain the absolute power in order to prevent EA on making the Oasis Pay to Win.
There was only ONE Nintendo reference and that's impossible. Like, nobody's playing Mario? Wait no, Nintendo is still hitting it big with Nintendo Exclusives with the Switch Deluxe XL.
9:21 Fun fact: In the book there were actually rules that made that in some zones the players can't fight and if they try, the game just freeze them for a little time
That's the main thing from the movie that I simply couldn't understand, imagine if in literally any MMO you could just kill everyone in the main hub towns. There would be no one playing those anymore, so why would something where you can do that and lose real life money have millions?
I thought the rule was you couldn’t fight at all and there was a separate rule for if you tried to log off during a fight you were frozen for a minute so you didn’t have a cheap out
18:30 In case anyone was wondering, In the book, parzival gets the extra life by getting the maximum possible score in a pacman arcade in the Oasis. Shit was almost impossible.
I love how nobody cares that IOI has literal gulags inside their facilities just because some people has debts on a game that is not even property of IOI.
If by game you mean the OASIS then that’s a bad way of thinking. The oasis isn’t a game it’s a whole new world, with its own economy and everything. Debts a things, and currency is a thing, so if you don’t pay of debts you have to work it off
In the book they do a better job of explaining that the world economy is so wrecked that the oasis currency is more stable than real world currencies and becomes the defacto currency for most people and transnational corporations. So having a job dorectly through the oasis where you can make in game money was just as viable a living situation as working irl making money that way. Same way when it came to incurring debt.
@@bitbreaker_creatoryeah but they changed all the challenges, all the pacing, all the characters, all the locations, all the lore. i mean it's stupid as hell if you cant adapt it don't try

One thing i absolutly HATED in this movie... that completly ruined the movie for me was one single point: Consitency of ingame vs rl movements... Sometimes you are on a treadmill... sometimes you just stand with strings attached... sometimes you can simply run through the streets. Treadmill i get... seems nice and pretty alright (even with the van crashing in) strings... uhm... where are you walking towards... how can you run in the oasis if you run? dont the cables get knoted togehter? SO MANY QUESTIONS. And the worst thing: free runaround... we see peoiple doing actions with only their visor... HOW does it transfer movement... HOW are they kept safe? WHAT ARE THE RULES GOD DAMMIT!!! Because this shit doesnt make any sense and only switches for plot convenience... I NEED A BONUS ROUND FOR EVERY INCONSISTENT USE OF REALLIFE TO INGAME MOVEMENT.
Yeap, and they were left and right of each other, both in Oasis and IRL, and they look Left/right to the other person. I mean that doesn't have to be the case, they could be just back to back in IRL and looking the same way in VR.
LetsPlayCrazy I would probably say about plus 100 sins, especially with that ending fight and all the switching between irl and the game. Heck maybe even 200
@@arakanichigou3582 But she did point out something, wade didnt do anything to help around the house knowing that the game money can turn into real money. @@adamcole9480 what did wade do then? Technically it was a gamble since the uncle didnt know how powerful his opponents was during that fight but wade knew. I was under the idea that he used the rent money to try to earn even more money ( yeah like you said he could have just went to the gambling world) and it was a bad investment. But what did Wade do to the house then
For the sin about no one finding a playable version of the shining, this was only activated because Wade and company had the bronze key. No other players had it so they would experience the normal movie in the oasis
But somehow IOI agents were able to get to it. And it wasn't shown or said how IOI agents managed to get past Gorilla in first challenge. Because according to Wade, only they got the first key after telling each other how.
@@MartinzW Yeah that's one thing the book did better. Because Wade was dirt-poor, he couldn't afford to go cajoling off to some random planet. By logical deduction, if he found the first key, it must be a Ludus, so Irok ratted to IOI.
18:36 "I BET the book did something different that was a lot more satisfying," It did. Watts played allof 255 levels of Pacman and to beat the score which was set by Halliday, to get the Extra Life Quarter. But hey, as you said, the books don't matter.
@Michael Grabsch Now that's a detail that mattered. For someone like me, who haven't read the book, playing 255 lvl pacman didn't sound that amazing either. He is a "master" gamer after all, kinda. Taking him a year though, yeah that's much more fitting.
that's the main problem of the film. It needs an "afternoon" from start to finish. In the book there are month of reading and combining clues - no strange android. Also the quests were lame. Driving backwards, jumping on zombies? The book is an homage to the 80s, the film a dumbed down version of it, sadly. (with useless mentions of newer technolgies and games which breaks immersion for me, twitter, overwatch, minecraft etc)
Can I add that the Watts in the movie has been dumbed down than the Watts on the book? And I kinda hated it when the most thrilling part of the book (Watts invading the IOI just to know how to disable the orb) didn't make it to the movie. Imagine that happening on the movie instead. That will be quite more thrilling.
thrilling is word that doesn't exists in the film. You never have the feeling that there is some sort of danger. I also missed all the negative side of the oasis - wade alone in his Apartment for month, not communicating with his friends and so on. I really hoped they would make a good adaptation of the book, but it's just another blockbuster
Sin 192: There's about 10 minutes of exposition at the start of the movie, half of which could be introduced later or cut out Sin 193: The way the characters talk about King Kong makes it sound like they use the same map again and again, meaning that you could memorize or even computerize the race, and yet no one has done it Sin 194: IOI drivers all use the same car, despite the fact different cars could help in trying to complete the race. Like imagine if someone brought like truck or something Sin 195: No one has done a Mission Impossible style break-in to try and get the keys. Heck, the egg itself is probably inside the code or something like that Sin 196: "Character on a motorcycle slides underneath a truck" cliche Sin 197: Cars seem to interact with each other, meaning to you could lose a perfect run because someone else, out of your control, messed up Sin 198: "Main character conveniently forgets thing they should know for the viewer's sake" cliche Sin 199: All of New York City's buildings rotate, but builds the bridge from nothing, instead of, like, taking the Brooklyn Bridge and putting it there Sin 200: Wade is kidnapped and brought to a secret base because... Sin 201: IOI has access to body armor and long guns, for no reason Sin 202: IOI doesn't decide to surround the building, despite the fact that they could clearly do so Sin 203: For some reason in the Artari puzzle, the ice breaks after one minute of play, meaning that if you had like 30 minutes, you can do the puzzle by pure trial-and-error, which is what IOI ends up doing
The first time I saw Wade running away from the exploded stacks falling towards him I just heard in my head “Prometheus school of running away from things”
I think you forgot to mention one. At about 2:22 Anorak says he created 3 hidden keys to 3 magic gates well at the end of the movie all 3 keys go into the same gate, and Anorak had all 3 keys.
It doesn't matter that "Jason Voorhees" would be easy to kill on planet doom. Your character stats and skill are more important than your character appearance.
Well either way it seems avatars of people also use that avatar's weapon so Jason's knife doesn't seem very effective vs I Dunno ummm... let's use doomguy's whole arsenal as an example
Well the stats of the weapon and armor are what matters, planet doom didn’t exist in the book, but leveling up just increased what weapons you could use and your base hitpoints. So level doesn’t matter, and a guy with a machine gun will win against a guy with Jason’s machete
I wish they had the budget to make this movie as close to the book as possible, it would be a million times better. The way the book describes the trials and how they are supposed to be solved are amazing.
@@vernonmontgomery9898 That's because you didn't read the book and only know part of the story. His "aunt" abused and starved him. The only reason she took him in at all was to take his state food assistance. He didn't claim her as family.

Or did they get their game paused for a minute i feel like we needed to see the effects or the scene where they all get paused and also are the other people not affected too?? What about outside the zone??? There is so many questions 😐
Yeah that annoyed me. Also, some of these magic items seem way to powerful. And he just purchased that cube casually from some store, where he also purchased real life items. So the rich are surely are loaded with things like this, and dominating every single death match thing for sure

Snowdles the difference is between story writen in the book and a characters that were thrown there just to fill the empty space. And todays memes are stupid and kinda cancerous (doesn't mean I don't laugh at them, YEET) so I am not surprised they didn't put them in. The education was free, anything from their past was free to watch, you do have to wonder how people support the need for food, but yeah tech workers. Also in the book he didnt have to be rich to win the price, he just had to know the creators interests and figure out the cryptic clues.

Most people don't really care, they would rather just go about their day or just avoid talking about it I guess. It's not really that bad.
For me, it was the 'You should come have a look at this.' that made me instantly go 'You should come have a look at this cliché!' *Ding* Shit, do we watch too much CinemaSins vids...?
18:35 yes, in the books, I believe when searching for the 2nd key or gate(can’t remember) he thought he found a clue by playing a perfect game of Pac-Man, which in the book, Halliday was one of the first people in the world to do so. After completing this, Wade was awarded with the extra life coin.
OKAY, so during that last scene with the real-life cut ins from the final fight, we're not going to sin how everyone is running on the sidewalk while playing the game and somehow not running into anyone or anything?!
Maybe some advanced version of Oculus Guardian that auto-detects your surroundings? Still doesn't explain how they can multitask while running full tilt though.
CrazyE: yeah, that's just one of the stupid plot holes in the movie. The director can't decide if you stay in one place (as you do in the book) or run around with your vision blocked. Sometimes the sixers are running around (in the beginning when they run to their cars) and some times they are strapped in to their rigs.
Yes, but the headsets they use have a see through visor, so they can see in the oasis and real world also. So the real sin is, wouldn’t this let the oasis be not as immersive?!
The "nobody thought to go fucking backwards in five years" thing was what I was thinking _the whole time._ Fun as this movie was, there's no way that "go backwards" wasn't tried in FIVE YEARS. Even if they didn't know the clue, someone would have tried it just to be silly.
I dunno man, with as popular as Oasis is, someone would have _definitely_ done it. Hell, we'd have kids logging into siblings' accounts to ruin their shit in the most funny ways possible, or doing content for RUclips/Twitch and accidentally stumbling on it. I could definitely see "Driving BACKWARDS on THE RACE (Hidden EASTER EGG???)" as a viral RUclips video showing up in my recommended feed lmao
there was a lot of memories in the halliday journals where the clue could be. He knew that the clue should be in the office party 2029 but the others didn't know that the clue was there. The curator also didn't close the memory when Wade was leaving cuz curator knew that wade was so close that he had to keep it open until he hears the backwards line
The second I saw the movie, I thought "Wait, as long as this egg hunt had been going...nobody ever played Mario Kart? Or driven backwards just for the hell of it?"
Ive watched so,many cinema sins videos, ive pretty much memorized every repeated sin they use. So when I see it in movies, I count how many I can find.

I love this book. The movie was fun... Without pretending you've read the book. And the book sadly, explains a lot of the loopholes in this movie In order for him to get the extra life. He has to play a perfect game of packman, which only few people have done. It was a great homage to coin op games that played a large part on the book
Yeah. Movie looks really, really fun. Had I watched it before reading the book, I probably would've loved it. But after reading the book all I can do is fucking LOATHE how far the movie strays from the book. Hopefully someone does the book justice someday, because its probably my favorite book
I watched the movie first, and because I’m a total troglodytes, I didn’t know it was a book first. After “reading” it I really wish they’d stuck to the book. I doubt it could have all squeezed into one normal length movie, but they were like you said two different stories.
The story is changed depending on the type of media. For example, if it was a play, the script would be rewritten to suit a play. This is what they did with the book to movie adaptation.
I’m glad you pointed out/ insinuated how much better the book was than the movie. The movie really could have been amazing if they stayed more true to the book.
TheVampirate the weirdest part of the book character was how seemingly he had played, read, watched and listened to everything Haliday liked multiple times. Like how did he even find the time to do all that.
Book Spoilers - In the book there are 3 keys AND 3 gates, the movie mentions them, but that's it, whereas in the book they have to clear both the Key challenge and the Gate challenge following it, but there are a BUNCH of other steps involved. (Solve Riddle) - The First Clue to the Location of the Copper key ends up being hidden in Anorak's Almanac with tiny notches besides letters which spells out a riddle. (Beat Challenge) - Once you decipher the riddle and find the location of the first key, you then need to beat "Acererak", an advanced Ai at Joust on an Arcade machine in "Best of 3" to get the copper key. (Solve Riddle) - Once you get the key you have to decipher another riddle which takes you to the location of the first gate, (Beat Challenge) - You then need to complete Dungeons of Daggorath for the TRS-80 to open the First Gate. (Beat Gate) - The First Gate ends up being a Movie Challenge where you need to speak all the correct dialogue and actions for the entire movie of "Wargames" (Solve Riddle) - Once you clear the first gate, you have to solve another riddle to get the location of the Jade Key (Beat Challenge) - You then need to complete a Zork Challenge which involves collecting 19 trophies and blowing a Cap'N Crunch Bo'Sun Whistle. (Solve Riddle) - After you get the Jade key you have to solve another riddle to find the location of the second gate (Beat Gate) - Once you find the second gate you need to beat a First Person 3D version of "Black Tiger" (Solve Riddle) - Once that is done you get a red five pointed star, (specifically the star from the cover of the Rush concept album 2112) which is a clue to the location of the Crystal key (Beat Challenge) - Once you reach the location of the Crystal key you need to play particular riff on a hidden guitar waiting there and returning it to the altar (this is probably the easiest key to attain) (Solve Riddle) - Once you have the Crystal key it gives you a clue on the location of the 3rd gate and how to open it, which ends up requiring 3 people with the crystal key and singing a Schoolhouse Rock song, "Three Is A Magic Number". (Beat Challenge) - Once you open the 3rd gate you then need to beat a score of 728,329 on the classic video game Tempest (Beat Challenge) - Once you beat that, you then need to complete another movie challenge, which ends up being Monty Python's The Holy Grail (Beat Gate) - Once you beat that, you then need to choose from a massive pile of video games an consoles the right game (which ends up being Adventure). You then need to get the hidden dot in adventure to unlock the easter egg and beat the challenge So thats 6 Riddles, 6 challenges, and the 3 Gates themselves.
No sin points for the actions of IOI against the people until the very end of the movie by legal authorities? Like, they're kidnapping people, bombing homes, etc. in the movie with zero consequences up until Wade wins, and then suddenly the cops get involved?
Its actually explained pretty well in the book, before they blow up the trailer, Sorento tells Wade that noone will care because it will just look as meth lab exploding and Daito death just looks as ,,another otaku suicide''.
Autumnsfantasy Yeah, it's stupid... it's not like for example presidents in the real world can go on with fraud, tax evation, blatant lies, obstruction of justice etc with zero consequences....
Everything wrong with this movie: It'S nOtHiNg LiKe ThE bOoK!?!? Example 1: In the book, this dude actually goes to school. AND that's where the first challenge is (also none of the challenges were accurate, although the 3rd was pretty close) Example 2: In no way, shape, or form do the main characters hunt for the keys together. Example 3: One of the Asian kids died in real life because IOI legit murdered him (Daito I think) Example 4: Daito and Shoto actually lived in Japan, Aech (H) lived in his van, Art3mis's home was in Vancouver. Example 5: Wade defeated Nolan by himself when he tricked IOI into thinking he was cheating the system so they would arrest them. Example 6: Wade was actually intelligent in the book instead of being someone who ran on hints he got from other people. Example 7: It took around 6 MONTHS for Art3mis to solve the 2nd challenge, which was AFTER IOI solved it, then Aech, and after that it took ages for Wade to solve it after he was given hints Example 8: There was no curator?? AND THERE WAS NO BUTTON to shut down the game. Example 9: Morrow (the dude with white hair at the end) was actually the person who brought all the main characters together and was basically the only reason Wade succeeded. But props to them for sticking to Aech being a black woma
Gabriella Andrews most of the stuff was true (in yours), but I’m going to help correct because I’m stupid. 1. Diato was the one that died IRL, not Shoto. Easy to get them mixed up tho 2. There was a button to shut off the game, but Wade didnt almost shut it off like an idiot 3. I believe that the Jade Key was in Art3mis’s possession for 3-5 days before the sixers got it and cracked the code in around a day. H was next (I’m calling her H because I don’t care and it’s easier), and she sent Wade a not with the cover of “Zork” attached. This was a hint for him, because the Jade key was hidden on Frobaz, where you can play recreations of Zork and it’s sequels. He got it almost immediately Yes, so many things were different and a lot of people didn’t like it, including me. I am not in any way, shape, or form trying to attack you. @@autumnleaf4380 Thank you for correcting me! I knew some things were incorrect and I haven't read the book in a while so even if you were wrong I wouldn't notice :)
Nah, she was fair. Her only line to Wade was, "Don't touch my stuff." That's all. The writers failed characterize her, so I sorta felt a little bad she died.
Yeah. In the book he made a statement about how she was shitty but didn’t deserve to die, but it wasn’t played out in the movie. Plus he later mentions to sorrento ‘you killed my mom’s sister you think I won’t kill you?’ Making her death a bigger deal than portrayed in the movie after the stack collapse
She was an absolute bitch in the book. Only looking after him to steal his food coupons and pawning anything she found of his worth any money then expecting him to be grateful to her for letting him stay there. Just another reason why the book is way better than this piece of shit movie, you get far better fleshed out characters.
The scene when H as iron giant is just injured crawling around makes me laugh bc that implies that while two feet away from her teammates in real life, she’s laying on the floor with her headset pretending to be hurt.
Especially the part when she “falls into lava” she’s laying on the floor pretending to be in lava and sticking her hand up dramatically all while being literally right next to Wades feet
All characters (even the Asian kids) happen to not be fat and gross creepy adults and all happen to live close to eachother in North-America? When they showed a group of kids joining the big final battle as Ninja Turtles they were running with VR goggles ON THE street. Pokemon GO deaths all over again. When IOI employees got killed in a blast wave circle in the final battle, they just happened to also be in a circle when the VR rig lights turned red? If the first player to ever get the first key has a cheap avatar, don´t you think everyone will dress up as him? But yeah, no-one in five years has ever tried driving backwards... I remember watching a team of Halo easter egg hunters glitching 20 vehicles into the void to use them as a staircase to get to a cinematic-only room they were never supposed to go. People be crazy dedicated.
In the book shoto and daito is in Japan and aech and art3mis is in north america, but in totally different places, and they all get brought together with private Jets because og (co creator of the oasis) has a lot of jets...
In the book he had to play a perfect game of pac man not die and collect every point witch qas very hard but he eventually won and got the quarter but had no idea what it did
Yah that was one of my favorite parts because it was sort of a side quest but very hard. and you thought it was for some key or something but it wasn’t, and then you kind of forgot about it. and then at the end there was this really satisfying ohhhh moment where you remembered it and I loved that part
First, the Gunters were Obsessed with the 80's that was there lives. NONE Of the Gunters would be anything but something dealing with the 80's. In fact, the whole world was.. of course that was the book.
18:32 The book DID. Wade played a perfect game of Pac-Man on a game archade planet. In general the makers of the movie felt that the clues and references in the book were not mainstream enough (which is true, I hadn’t heard of a lot of them) but the references they replaced them with created way too many plot holes. It’s why I LOVED the book and LIKED the movie.
I loved the book but only liked the movie for the animation used. Honestly I know some movies change a few parts of the book while making it, but this one felt like they ripped it apart and changed almost everything.
In a rare instance of the book writer actually working on he screenplay, Cline actually worked with the screenwriter to specifically make the story more 'visual' for the movie. So the blatant plot holes and Dues ex machina's added to the movie are kind of unforgivable.
I think 4:50 should be sinned not because someone should've tried this, but because of newbies going backwards accidentally. Especially since kids will probably get confused between backwards and forwards
*BOOK SPOILER* In the book, he got the extra life from the arcade machine that the second key was at, it was a quarter that "mysteriously" fell off of the machine and into his inventory
Dirge Wordsmithe It got so bad that at one point everyone in the theatre was just talking and making fun of the characters and laughing whenever slenderman was on screen
When I first read the book, I imagined the OASIS having an animation style that’s blocky and old fashioned, kind of like a combination of Minecraft and an ‘80s 8-bit arcade game. When the trailer came out, my first reaction to their interpretation of the OASIS was “I missed the mark”
I don’t know how you get to that imagination? The book tells quit a few times that everything is rendered photo realistic and that the real world even feels washed out against it. Also when he enters the museum planet he says that it looks weird how his highly rendered ship sits in the pixel planet
I know that the “books don’t matter” but I just have to say that the book was way better. The puzzles were so much better (especially the first one, you’re telling me thousands of gamers never thought to go backwards in a puzzle?). Plus it made more sense, like the fact that there PvP restricted areas. Wade also got the coin by finding an area no one ever found before and getting a flawless score on Pac-Man. I just wish they put in the first puzzle at least because it shows how he started with literally nothing, just on the school planet with no money and no way to go anywhere else.
The puzzles in the book were a labor of love; accomplishments only achievable by filthy cheaters(IOI)and people with the same level of love as Halliday. These challenges just felt... generic. Also there's NO WAY the world would just forget the person who cracked the first code. They would at least become a meme, not just forgotten by even gunters.
This is one of those movie (another example being the shining) where the movie is good if you haven’t read the book. Both movies change so much of what the original novels did so great. They are both great as stand-alone movies, but when you factor in the VERY good books, the movies just don’t look good.
@@evanstorm8889 Both are at fault for shoving too much under a time frame, too quickly. The movie streamlines some events (The 1up coin, movie is quicker) but clears out several reference connections ( The big robot fight, better in the book) For instance, it would be nice to have a nostalgic connection for the Iron Giant and Aech, but that's never elaborated.
Aggad I’ve only heard bad things about the book actually. I heard that in the book Wade is straight up unlikeable and has even less personality than he does in the movie (which is saying something).
Yeah, but then he remembers that Dr. Strange could've just turned back time and killed or imprisoned Thanos when he wasn't powerful, so the sins double.
Even if Dr. Strange uses his powers to turn back time to when Thanos didn’t had the gauntlet and killed him easily for the movie to end quickly, then people would’ve been bitching at Marvel.
Caleb Montes Oh, no doubt. Just feel like there could've been a way to make Strange not *know* what's coming yet so there'd be no giant plot hole (Yeah, the whole "don't mess with time" warning from the Strange movie still holds I guess, but he literally altered the timeline an infinite number of times to win there, so I'd assume one quick zip back isn't nearly as bad.)
I read ready Player one recently, AND watched the movie... an hour ago or so. Book is a great read, Movie... well, it had some enjoyable parts, but damn did it suck at explaining things not familiar with the world. Good calls on a lot of the sins this time. I FEEL like the damn executive was petty enough to shoot Wade towards t he end though, but suddenly made it seem like he had a change of heart at the end. He had the shot and there was nothing in the way despite witnesses, but he apparently was already determined enough to do it anyway. Would have sinned that, personally.
I still think it's stupid none of the witnesses tried to fight Sorrento. There's no way he could take down a whole town of people when he has just a pistol.
@@LineOfThy If I was that big guy standing behind him, I wouldn't give an F. He only has one gun and he is only one man surrounded by a bunch of people. If he tried shooting one person, everyone else should be charging him.
The biggest problems in this film is the lack of anime avatars which would flood the oasis and how not one person spams mic chat
Logan Mort not enough Ugandan Knuckles 0/10
They missed a giant opportunity by not referencing meme culture once. If VR chat is any indication, the place would be a meme goldmine

Wasn't it like more people have been on the moon than have played a perfect game of pac man
Yeah, I listened to the full Audiobook and it was really satisfying to just listen too over the course of a few days bingeing it.

I definitely liked the book more than the movie in this case.
The book is so much better
you took my idea
Felt like half the sins were for things that they had addressed in the books. Why could you get attacked in the club? Cause it was in a PvP area, which made it risky and exclusive. Why are there portals? Cause it cost money/resources to travel between worlds. Why wouldn't multiple arcade cabinets spawn? They did in the book. Why could you approach the character doing the final challenge? You couldn't, entering a portal was a single-player thing. Why were there cans of soda sitting around? It was about creating a realistic atmosphere you could brag about. Etc. Etc.
“If you look under your seat, you’ll find nothing.”
My favorite quote in the movie.
TheAdvertisement seriously though, that’s standard in Mario kart. How did no one think of trying that?!
Laura Del Valle ikr
personally, i after trying for countless times, i know i would have tried driving backwards; in some games, going backwards results in awesome glitches or easter eggs
if it makes you feel better that's not how it was in the book.

Wouldn't shutting down the Oasis two days a week cause a partial collapse of the economy?
@RedStarTV
Wasn't really asking about real world consequences of the movie.

I think you forgot to mention one. At about 2:22 Anorak says he created 3 hidden keys to 3 magic gates well at the end of the movie all 3 keys go into the same gate, and Anorak had all 3 keys.
This movie could’ve been way longer with better puzzles if they didn’t remove the gates being separate puzzles like in the book
It doesn't matter that "Jason Voorhees" would be easy to kill on planet doom. Your character stats and skill are more important than your character appearance.
Aech fucking dodged a stab because of her avatar
Also Voorhees wasnt a NPC on that planet. He was a rival PC
Well either way it seems avatars of people also use that avatar's weapon so Jason's knife doesn't seem very effective vs I Dunno ummm... let's use doomguy's whole arsenal as an example
yeah and it’s annoying that he gave it a sin for freddy kruger being there when it was a player playing as freddy kruger
Well the stats of the weapon and armor are what matters, planet doom didn’t exist in the book, but leveling up just increased what weapons you could use and your base hitpoints. So level doesn’t matter, and a guy with a machine gun will win against a guy with Jason’s machete
"I BET the book did something different that was a lot more satisfying..." literally sums up this entire movie

Another sin : the cube turns back time a minute ago then did the people in real life turn back too? Or did they get their game paused for a minute i feel like we needed to see the effects or the scene where they all get paused and also are the other people not affected too?? What about outside the zone??? There is so many questions 😐

However, the movie does such garbage to the book that its worse than the Percy Jackson movie franchise.

Nope, it doesn't. It was just underlooked for the purpose of action.
Maybe some advanced version of Oculus Guardian that auto-detects your surroundings?

CrazyE: yeah, that's just one of the stupid plot holes in the movie. The director can't decide if you stay in one place (as you do in the book) or run around with your vision blocked. Sometimes the sixers are running around (in the beginning when they run to their cars) and some times they are strapped in to their rigs.

The story is changed depending on the type of media. For example, if it was a play, the script would be rewritten to suit a play. This is what they did with the book to movie adaptation.

Book Spoilers -
In the book there are 3 keys AND 3 gates, the movie mentions them, but that's it, whereas in the book they have to clear both the Key challenge and the Gate challenge following it, but there are a BUNCH of other steps involved.
(Solve Riddle) - Once you get the key you have to decipher another riddle which takes you to the location of the first gate,
(Beat Challenge) - You then need to complete Dungeons of Daggorath for the TRS-80 to open the First Gate.
(Beat Gate) - The First Gate ends up being a Movie Challenge where you need to speak all the correct dialogue and actions for the entire movie of "Wargames"
(Solve Riddle) - Once you clear the first gate, you have to solve another riddle to get the location of the Jade Key
(Beat Challenge) - You then need to complete a Zork Challenge which involves collecting 19 trophies and blowing a Cap'N Crunch Bo'Sun Whistle.
(Solve Riddle) - After you get the Jade key you have to solve another riddle to find the location of the second gate
(Beat Gate) - Once you find the second gate you need to beat a First Person 3D version of "Black Tiger"
(Solve Riddle) - Once that is done you get a red five pointed star, (specifically the star from the cover of the Rush concept album 2112) which is a clue to the location of the Crystal key
(Beat Challenge) - Once you reach the location of the Crystal key you need to play particular riff on a hidden guitar waiting there and returning it to the altar (this is probably the easiest key to attain)
(Solve Riddle) - Once you have the Crystal key it gives you a clue on the location of the 3rd gate and how to open it, which ends up requiring 3 people with the crystal key and singing a Schoolhouse Rock song, "Three Is A Magic Number".
(Beat Challenge) - Once you open the 3rd gate you then need to beat a score of 728,329 on the classic video game Tempest
(Beat Challenge) - Once you beat that, you then need to complete another movie challenge, which ends up being Monty Python's The Holy Grail
(Beat Gate) - Once you beat that, you then need to choose from a massive pile of video games an consoles the right game (which ends up being Adventure). You then need to get the hidden dot in adventure to unlock the easter egg and beat the challenge
So thats 6 Riddles, 6 challenges, and the 3 Gates themselves.
No sin points for the actions of IOI against the people until the very end of the movie by legal authorities? Like, they're kidnapping people, bombing homes, etc. in the movie with zero consequences up until Wade wins, and then suddenly the cops get involved?

Example 1: In the book, this dude actually goes to school. AND that's where the first challenge is (also none of the challenges were accurate, although the 3rd was pretty close)
Example 2: In no way, shape, or form do the main characters hunt for the keys together.
Example 3: One of the Asian kids died in real life because IOI legit murdered him (Daito I think)
Example 4: Daito and Shoto actually lived in Japan, Aech (H) lived in his van, Art3mis's home was in Vancouver.
Example 5: Wade defeated Nolan by himself when he tricked IOI into thinking he was cheating the system so they would arrest them.
Example 6: Wade was actually intelligent in the book instead of being someone who ran on hints he got from other people.
Example 7: It took around 6 MONTHS for Art3mis to solve the 2nd challenge, which was AFTER IOI solved it, then Aech, and after that it took ages for Wade to solve it after he was given hints
Example 8: There was no curator?? AND THERE WAS NO BUTTON to shut down the game.
Example 9: Morrow (the dude with white hair at the end) was actually the person who brought all the main characters together and was basically the only reason Wade succeeded.
But props to them for sticking to Aech being a black woma
Gabriella Andrews most of the stuff was true (in yours), but I’m going to help correct because I’m stupid.
1. Diato was the one that died IRL, not Shoto. Easy to get them mixed up tho
2. There was a button to shut off the game, but Wade didnt almost shut it off like an idiot
3. He got it almost immediately

“Hey, he didn’t count to three!”
The exact words I used when I watched that scene for the first time somehow makes its way into his script
When I first read the book, I imagined the OASIS having an animation style that’s blocky and old fashioned, kind of like a combination of Minecraft and an ‘80s 8-bit arcade game. When the trailer came out, my first reaction to their interpretation of the OASIS was “I missed the mark”
I mean the book goes in depth on how realistic the Oasis was.
"The real world looked washed out and blurry by camparison"
No, they missed the mark. This movie was horrible. Worst adaption of all time!
I don’t know how you get to that imagination? The book tells quit a few times that everything is rendered photo realistic and that the real world even feels washed out against it. Also when he enters the museum planet he says that it looks weird how his highly rendered ship sits in the pixel planet
I imagined something similar to like, Super Mario Galaxy, except the planetts are a lot bigger and more spread apart
I pictured some parts that way, some realistic, and others somewhere in-between.
They would at least become a meme, not just forgotten by even gunters.
some critics say the movie is better
This is one of those movie (another example being the shining) where the movie is good if you haven’t read the book. Both movies change so much of what the original novels did so great. They are both great as stand-alone movies, but when you factor in the VERY good books, the movies just don’t look good.
@@evanstorm8889 Both are at fault for shoving too much under a time frame, too quickly. The movie streamlines some events (The 1up coin, movie is quicker) but clears out several reference connections ( The big robot fight, better in the book)
For instance, it would be nice to have a nostalgic connection for the Iron Giant and Aech, but that's never elaborated.
Aggad I’ve only heard bad things about the book actually. I heard that in the book Wade is straight up unlikeable and has even less personality than he does in the movie (which is saying something).
I hope when he does infinity war, half of the sins vanish when thanos snaps his fingers 😂😂
Gatsby Neptune Lol Yea that be cool
The sin counter doesn't feel so good at that point
@@KaiKrimson56 But you don't want to be the one who gets shot, do you?
@@LineOfThy If I was that big guy standing behind him, I wouldn't give an F. He only has one gun and he is only one man surrounded by a bunch of people. If he tried shooting one person, everyone else should be charging him.
