Solid advice. I'm currently an M1, and I am sitting at #2 in my class of 170+. The best advice to be at, or near, the top is this equation: Study Hours × efficiency= Result If you can find your own way to maximize that equation to be higher than everyone around you, I guarantee that you will succeed in medical school. I'm not going to lie, there hasn't been a day since school started, even breaks, that haven't studied at least for 2 hours. As for efficiency, everyone has to find something that works, but I think 1 thing that should be on the top priority for everyone is spaced repitition. If you don't know what this is, you need to learn what it is and how to use it. It is in my opinion biggest secret to scoring high on tests and retaining that info for step. I always tell people that a big part of medical school is becoming a memory expert, because there is just so much info to stay on top of. I could add a lot more about all this, but that's just my 2 cents!
Chad Richards Absolutely. Anki is the best spaced rep/flashcard app around. It is very versatile with the fact that you can add pictures, screenshots, etc. There are also amazing decks that others have made too. The Zanki and Bros decks are the two most popular. I personally use Zanki to go along with things, and I like it a lot.
This is glorious, been searching for "how to be on top of the class" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Yeetta Gradeify Scores - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got amazing success with it.
I personally use this “watching educational videos” technique very often. Before class for example, I’ll watch a video about the subject and understand the concepts before hand. Highly highly recommend
i am a third year med student from algeria ,i was always a top student but when i went to med school i wanted to be a cool person which i never was and will not be lol ...so i started not studing and not going to lectures i almost failed my second year ... i became deprested and i started thinking i was a looser and stupid which is actualy false because i had the first place in all my state in the entery exam to university with a GPA as you call it of 18/20 which realy big in my country ...in other words i started seeing my self as a bad student, which happened to you when you were in 8 th grade ....hearing your story realy opened my eyes on what i was doing to my self and heleped me to get my shit together lol ...so thank you .....this year i started to have better grades and i hope next year to regane my 1st place in med school this time !! sorry for my english its not my native languge and i study in french so i am not realy used to it !!!hope you read my comment ....i realy want to encorage you like you did whithme ...keep up the good work bye
Can you talk about your experience on taking the Boards, like how long each section is or how long it overall takes. How you were feeling going into it and how you felt afterwards?
Not really, more like your overall experience when taking the Boards. If you were feeling confident on your way to take your Boards and then felt as if you didn’t do so good. Just your personal experience at that time. I hope that made sense
I did my degree in like a year. It was the most fascinating time ever. They built the Free online college in my town to help people like me who couldn't travel and wanted a degree. Completely free. Amazing. I was better with computer than anything else ever. I grew up in the Amish country. Learned everything I needed to know. My Dr inspired me to follow my dreams always. So I thought I'd try and provide the health care the Amish can afford with there lifestyle like he wants to. That was so inspiring always. And I want to do the same thing always. So he is teaching now. Same thing I'm doing. We understand each other ability I think. My name is Elizabeth. Miller.
@Bernie Sanders You do realize DO's still go through 4 years of med school, an internship following med school, and a minimum of 2 years residency. Not to mention DO's are able to become fully licensed physicians and practice medicine or surgery in all 50 states and are recognized as legitimate doctors by 65 other countries. But yeah I guess DO's are not real doctors.
Week 5 of my freshman year of bachelors in science. Already stressed THE HELL OUT! Definitely need to order your packet on how to not suck and ruin my chances of becoming a surgeon!
I absolutely love you ♥️ .. u make me learn more about things than actual teachers ... if i could ask what do u eat, if u can make a video abt that it may be interesting because u seem healthy for a busy guy... or maybe u eat poorly because u can't judge a book by its cover... and working out .. do u have a system for that?
Hey Dr. Buck i was on your Instagram and saw your post with the physics textbook. I noticed that you said that your smart its just that before your tutor you didn't know how to study; were studying the wrong way. I feel like i am doing the same thing. how do i learn the right way to study? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respond lol i know your busy but would mean the world to me. love your channel and keep up the good work :)
Thanks for always being real, organic, and authentic with us! There's so much downtime built into a day that when one starts being really intentional about it, it becomes a huge investment in personal development! BOOM
Buck Parker, M.D. cool! I attend school in the Caribbean. I'm in my last semester. We need to pass shelf and Comp before the school allows us to take Step 1. Our school gives up about 3 months after Comp, to study for Step. Not sure if St. Mathews worked the same way.
"Repetitio est mater stadiorum" Dr. Parker, i have a question. What kind of information medical students should teach a lot? Now i am 5 course med student, i wanna be anesthesiologist. Should i prepare only for that residency or for teach some basic therapy/surgery etc stuff?
I really dont care if i am 1st or last...all i want is too clear my concepts and work on my weak points and clear my exams!...no one is gonna ask me about my gpa or positions once i am working as a doc....just be sincere and hard worker!😊
Hey Dr. Parker I have a question. So lets say that you are a Certified General Surgeon for 8-10 years, but you want to start teacher medical students or even high school students. Do you retain your board certification or do you lose it when you exit the practice of medicine in a hospital? Like how do you have to re certify your license every year or whats the "protocol" for that?
It’s a 10 year certification. So if u want to stop doing it 8 years in then u would not be able to go back. Well, u could be it would be difficult. So u Re-Cert at 10 years then u have another 10 to fuck around and still be able to go back and get a job. However, most hospitals ask for your case log from the previous 2 years. So taking a break is not easy. I would suggest doing part time so u have the cases and u stay current.
It's a bit funny how we find these productivity tricks when we are very busy, like in medical school. If we could use these things when I don't have impending deadlines... I wonder how much farther I could be.
Buck Parker, M.D. Quick question please ! As far as jobs for pre-meds go which one do you think is better between *ER Scribe* and *Medical Assistant* ?
Thomas Riley Really ? Why ? Medical assistant have "legit" jobs learn not only the way to speak but skills too and as a bonus have a way higher pay. Asside from the convenience why scribe ?
I have been both, am in medical school. Learned much more from scribing than from medical assisting. That's why. You are more likely to get a letter of recommendation as a scribe than as a medical assistant. Both experiences will vary depending on type of medicine. However I got to see what the doctor does as a scribe, but as medical assistant, I had to do my job and not interact much with doctor or patient.
my school uses reverse classroom, which means that we learn medicine from books and we go to school to discuss cases. It sucks, feels like I'm wasting my time.
I think it would be good to voice record your lectures, and then listen to them on 1.25 or 2.5 times speed on your commute. You could even listen to the lecture whilst taking a shit.
Where can we find these videos to study for the USMLE or for studying specific medical school concepts in general? Also, I love your videos and appreciate them and your wisdom! Off topic, but you also do a video about the REAL difference between an MD and a DO in terms of matching in residency? Dr. Mike's video was not helpful enough! :) I am a senior in high school right now and, in fact, got into 2 BS/DO programs and am considering them but I read up a lot on SDN and found out that, being a DO, it would be much harder to compete for competitive specialties like Derm or Surgery. I want to know your thoughts on this and also how the residency merger is going to affect this, if you know. Thanks so much!
Here is the short answer in my opinion. 1. get into MD US med school. # 2 and #3 are interchangeable in my opinion (actually IMHO I would say #3 first, then #2, but some pple think the other way around....so up to you) 2. If you can't, get into US DO school. 3. if you can't, get into Caribbean MD school. 4. If you can't, get into european MD school w rotations in the US 5. If you can't, get into european MD school with no rotations in the states, but then transfer to a caribbean school with rotations in the states for 3rd and 4th year after you crush step 1. 6. if you can't, get into european MD school and that has hospitals for your rotations in europe that are ACGME accredited. I will do a video explaining why.
Buck Parker, M.D. I finally committed to a decent public college (it was free because I really don’t want debt) and it wasn’t the BS/DO program... I’ll just work hard and get into an MD school. Just an update~
Heather Jones, nooooo! Live those dreams girl, you’ve got one life to live! Can always adopt in the future? Also being a doctor we will be in the know about the latest fertility tech 😁. At least we won’t ever get denied by patients for looking too young!

Yup, still better advice than Dr. Mike

true words Dr. Parker. I always remember back the good old days in medschool :D
Good shit, Dr. Parker.
The person who disliked the video must have liked it so much that they turned the screen upside down and liked it again
Apparently someone did the same for the likes on this comment
Where's this video when I needed it? I just graduated last year. Lol. Thanks for the advice Dr. Buck, mah man.
