Working with surgeons everyday I always tell people "Being a surgeon seems like its not a job or career, but a lifestyle." You are spot on that certain specialties kick you a$$ more. I work with CV/ thoracic surgeons mostly and it just seems like they never leave the hospital...
@gaganshettigar333 hello sir, thank you for this information. I am a postgraduate hospital admin student and I am working on my thesis n its on work-life balance of surgeons and what are the expectations from hospital administrators … want to have more videos and information on this topic can I have some valuable insights about this topic from you …where shall I get more info about work-life balance please do share your thoughts... thank you sir
Medicine as a job is a context that doesn’t have balance built in, so if it’s going to be there at all, it has to come from you. Early in my career I would feel bad at the idea of saying no to the hospital when they called me to work more and so I said yes too much & it became toxic to my life. Once I perceived that balance wasn’t already there but that I had to create it and work on it, that changed and I learned that as long as I said no sometimes, I could say yes without burden, and as long as I said yes sometimes, I could say no without guilt. We’re way outnumbered and the need of the world is endless, so I agree, you need balance to continue to have something to offer and to be healthy, and it’s up to you to tend to that and create it day by day & choice by choice.
My dad was a Surgeon in Afghanistan during the Bush vs. Bin Laden war. He's extremely depressed now and he doesn't wanna admit it. I think you really gotta have a passion for surgery, or you'll lose your mind, it's either or.
Guys THUMBS UP this comment as i know alot of you will benefit from this question. Dr Buck, one thing that intrigues me since I am a medical student is that how the surgeons recall and remeber alot of stuff! i do understand that this comes with time . But do surgeons like dedicate time every week or month to reading journals and read medical books to keep their knowledge fresh? DO you dedicate a specific amount of time to reading such stuff to keep that info? Very interested to know your opinion on it !
Being a surgeon is it's own LIFESTYLE. It's constant reading and talking and reviewing medical information. I don't dedicate a certain amount of time daily because my days are so up in the air. But i'm always getting emails with medical and surgical articles and reading those that pertain to me. After a while you remember the things that are significant. Also, remember the surgeons are telling you what they remember not what they don't remember lol
Dr. Parker! I think you're the man. I'm a sophomore in college and my goal is practice as an orthopedic surgeon. I just want to drop a comment and let you know that your videos are super motivating. Keep doing what you're doing, I have a feeling you'll inspire many young doctors like myself to keep pushing. Awesome vid, I dig the format and editing.
I appreciate how frank you are, doctor. Because medicine tends to be romanticized a lot, even within the profession. And to talk about it like this makes it more realistic and I think it's healthier for everyone. Thank you, doctor.
Love the new set up, and love your sense of humor. I'm a first year med student interested in surgery. Your videos are very helpful for understanding the day-in-the-life of a general surgeon, thank you.
Thumbs up! I'm currently a 3rd year med student and planning on going into surgery. I'm actually kind of excited for the upcoming grueling lifestyle, mostly because I'm just tired of 3rd year rotations where you have to be there but you can hardly do anything so you just sit around with no sense of purpose and waste a bunch of time. I'm looking forward to putting in a lot of hours in work that actually matters when I become a resident
My husband is a 4th year and he just got accepted to an orthopedic surgery residency. I’m really happy for him but I’m worried about the work/life balance. This basically confirmed what I thought but it gave me hope so thank you! I’m getting my PhD because I want to be a college professor in biochemistry so I obviously can’t relate lol.
Hi Dr. Parker, I’m a first year medical student. I watch your videos regularly. Love them! Keep the great material coming. I’m trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I love surgery. I worked with a lot of surgeons before school. But, I also love my wife and son, so I’m looking into their areas like the ED (I was assuming I had to work 80 per week as a surgeon, which would be tough for a family). It’s helpful to know that I don’t necessarily have to work for a million hrs a week. Thanks!
You had mentioned you like to read when you finally get some off time. What else makes up your leisure time? You've never talked about it, but do you have a partner in your life? If so, how do you balance that?
I love your videos. Im from Brazil, just graduated from medical school and dont know what specialty Im going to choose. Probably ophtalmology because I like the fast paced consult and surgeries and the technology behind it. And most important for me, you can have a life and do other things. Im 26 yo, still young, but I already realized medicine is not about saving the world and everyone, is about doing the best you can for your patients and youself aswell. Thank you so much for your videos!
Question: If surgeons have no life because demand is so high....couldn't we find an intelligent solution to increase the supply of this service? More surgeons through less destructive (life balance, 80+ hour weeks, etc etc) means?
You're the coolest fuckking doctor I've ever seen. Respect! - 2nd year med student who watches your videos in the breaks.. from Saudi (mind blown right?)

Dr. Parker, Love your raw explanation of GS! I'm in my last year of med school and applying for GS. I'm really intrigued by your current work schedule of 12 on 3-4x/week. Curious about what avenue you took to achieve that work balance? Are you a part of a private practice or employed by a hospital directly? Would love to hear more about how you managed to get such a rad schedule and any advice you have on how to work towards that myself. Peace and Blessings
Great videos! i'm in my 4th year of medical school and i wonder if it's possible (and when, how) to "draw the line" as a resident. I know, we have to work and learn a lot, show ambition and be willing to do the extras. But i also don't want to work for free all day and night long and be taken for granted. i witnessed this a lot while working in the OR as a nurse, but i don't want to end up there too :D

I know you've said because you goofed off in undergraduate. Also how was the non BIG 3 Carib school like. The naysayers who probably tried to get you to quit. Lastly and most importantly going into detail of your one year hiatus into preparing for STEP 1. That's incredible. Your routine, schedule. All the details you can put into a video. THANKS
Buck Parker, M.D. It will resonate with me greatly. I dropped out of high school at 16 and eventually made it through college graduating with a 3.97 GPA. I need to do premed classes but feel invincible going from the lowest depths academically to the heights. I think my route will follow yours because of my academic record and it's spotty discontinuous form. My twenties are long gone but feel now more than ever I can make it through this last stretch. Teenage invincibility at my age LOL!!
80 hour weeks ? That's paradise. Lol. In India that's what we Interns do . For residents , it's more like a 24 he shift , then a 12 he shift then rest for 12 hrs then 24 hrs shift then 12hrs , then rest for 12 hrs and so on for 1st years , 12 hour daily shifts with one 24 shift in the week or so for 2nd years and it's the least hectic for the third years who mainly do 8 to 12 hour shifts a day and even then mostly are on call for stuff like emergency trauma surgery etc at night. So they mostly have no night shifts at all.
Do you have any tips for high school students aspiring to become a physician ? I’ve wanted to become a doctor since I was very young and still want to ! Any tips at all would be appreciated !! :)
Hi!! Obviously, you are not married but I was curious if you knew anyone engaged/married/starting a family in medical school? I am very interested in pursuing a career in the medical field and truly see myself becoming a doctor specifically in emergency medicine. I am just wondering how I'd be able to juggle getting married and having a family while trying to become a doctor. I have heard many people say that you should just focus on one or the other but I know for sure that I want to settle down one day. Thank you!!
had some friends get divorced in med school and residency. i think ER is reasonable cause it's only 3 years. way less work than surgery. its doable to keep a marriage w ER, FM, IM
Sorry for piggybacking on your comment, Sarah, but what if you decide to get married to a pediatrician? Are they really THAT nice all the time or is it just a facade they put on when they are dealing with kids (and anxious parents)? Obviously, I'm only asking for a friend... :-D
That sounds like a pretty intense life man. Do you know of any women following your non traditional pathway, starting medical school at 26, and pursuing neurosurgery as a specialty? I am already engaged, 7 year relationship so I definitely want to have kids someday. Are neurosurgery and a family life possible? Any thoughts?
Love the videos! Current M1, I don’t know dick, but trying to learn. What specialties will be most in demand in the next 5 years and which will be least in demand. Should that weigh into my specialty choice at all?
yes and no. you want to make sure you love it, cause it ends up being a lot of your life. but yes because you don't want to get stuck with no work. most surgery specialties are in demand. radiology, ER etc
Dr Buck Parker career choices:

0.07 that's me...that's me right there
Buck Parker, M.D. Thank you, truly appreciate it!
Want to know as well
What kind of music do U listen to when U r doing surgery??
Love the videos! Current M1, I don’t know dick, but trying to learn. What specialties will be most in demand in the next 5 years and which will be least in demand. Should that weigh into my specialty choice at all?
yes and no. you want to make sure you love it, cause it ends up being a lot of your life. but yes because you don't want to get stuck with no work. most surgery specialties are in demand. radiology, ER etc
Which type of surgery residency will let you workout your life? Thanks!
Thx lot nice and simple ( eye opening) thx a lot again
