Totally on board with your opinion. I felt it was amazing film and one that you can really feel the heart in. Not to mention, this film contains my all time favorite haunted house in a film ever. No other film I know had a cool as hell mansion as this film.
I am 23. Lost my mommy 4 years ago and then my daddy died and my little brother found him(parents were divorced before my momma’s death so my daddy automatically got custody). It will be a year since my daddy passed on mothers day (ikr already a tough day to handle then this) i hope you are well baby and bringing life to this world. Watching a lovely and light movie like this shows you are a kind, silly and hopeful. Keep going ❤️
i went to Florida's Universal studios in 1995 and got to see parts of the actual sets in Casper. The full set in the movie is amazing. I worked out casper's 'can i keep you' theme on the piano as it is so beautiful and haunting.
Both Richie Rich and Casper were fantastic movies. Screw the critics. Honestly, almost none of those references are "products of their time" as most of those things you mentioned are still going on nowadays, apart from maybe the Jaws reference.
Siskel and Ebert didn't know what they were talking about. Richie Rich was amazing. Especially since he had his own McDonald's in his house and had a roller coaster in his backyard.
I actually watched it for Christmas 2020 or the day after or before can’t remember. Dang it brought back memories I’m glad I finally watch it again I hadn’t seen it since I was 8 or something I’m 27 now
9:40 Friendship is a real town in Maine, even if it wasn't the one used in the film. Also, there's a lot more to Maine than just Stephen King; it's more likely the location scout picked Maine because of how beautiful it is in the fall, and it was cheaper to film here at that time (see also: Jumanji)
This is a Timeless Movie...So many funny part's, cool cameos, and Great writing. more movies like this need to be made. I am 42 now, but was 16 when this came out, saw it at the theater. I balled my eye's out like a baby when Bill Pullman's Angelic wife came to him, I loved the line, "French fries or pizza is not a breakfast food", adding a touch of humor. I admit she was beautiful and had a crush on her. The part where Casper showed up in his human form for his selfless deed, along with the music, truly made this a Masterpiece. This Movie deserved so much more than what it was given.
Dr. Raymond Stantz: Who you gonna call?... Someone else. Dr. James Harvey: You can call them ghosts, if you'd like, or as I like to call them, "the living-impaired."
That was a Phenomenally beautiful Song...the music video should've added the beginning piano sequence, to lead to the Crescendo. I had Jordan Hill's Album CD at the time, so many great song's on it. "How Many Times", "Too much Heaven" with the Bee Gees, and the Casper theme, "Remember Me this Way". I think Dianne Warren wrote the music for the song.
Surely 'The Three Musketeers' is a timeless classic, written in 1844 and adapted over 50 times on TV and the big screen... definitely NOT just a part of 90's culture.
Yes even while he's talking about 90s references he shows Father Guido Sarducci from the 70s and 80s and of course Ghostbusters from the 80s. He also mentions the Jaws reference which is from the 70s.

I love the music for this movie, especially in the third act when Casper becomes human for a short time. I love that this movie adds subjects such as grieving and dealing with death. Bonus Fun fact: Christina Ricci had since disowned the movie, and said "Looking back, that film sucked. It made no sense, I'm supposed to fall in love with a ghost? How does that work? He's a cartoon and 50 years older than me." But she would later admit she was tired staring in kids movies and wanted more raw roles. (You can she her expression when she was asked if she would do more sequels on a ET interview and it shows.) This is one of if not the reason why Casper 2 never happened in the late 90s. Basically she became the Bill Murray of Ghostbusters 3, which is a damn shame.
As a kid growing up during the 90's who's always loved movies and going to the theater, there were a lot of movies during that time that either disappointed me or left me underwhelmed (either lackluster sequels or movies that I set my expectations too high for). This was NOT one of them. A 90's classic for sure, and a perfect example of taking an old property and modernizing it without making the characters the butt of the joke. Throughout the 90's there were WAAAYY TOO MANY movies based off old tv shows where they simply placed these characters into the present day (Brady Bunch, Beverly hillbillies, Leave it to Beaver, etc...) and the joke was always the same: Wouldn't it be funny if these old, outdated characters were living among us today and had no idea how to socialize in the modern world? It's a miracle the Flintstones movie actually took place in the time/setting the show was set in.

The original 1940s cartoon hinted that he suffered depression and always was indelible that he was dead. He wanted to make friends so he can feel like he's alive again and when he's rejected, he tries harming himself, by lying in train tracks, drowning himself with a rope/rock, or jumping off a cliff. Only to be reminded he's already dead and is damned to suffer. I never got the sense that he was the ghost of Richie Rich considering he and Casper crossovered together in comics. But I am happy they went back to Casper originally being a human than being born as a ghost by magic or whatever.
It always bugged me how people called the lion king remake "live action" It wasn't live action. It was 100% animated. Even the setting was animated. Live action means a living being is on film. It's super realistic animation, not live action

There's a deleted scene where Kat looks through a photo album and see a picture of Casper's uncles in human form. also one of Zelda Rubinstein reprising her role as Tangina and the uncles shoot her up the chimney.
The full script is online and there's SO many scenes taken out. One scene I wished was in the movie was near the end where Casper's about to bring Dr. Harvey back to life but the Trio stop him, not wanting him to be a human again and wants Casper to do his chores instead. Casper stands up to them, growing larger with a demonic voice shouting at them "AND DON'T CALL ME BULBHEAD!" With the Trio flying away in fear. This would've concluded Casper's sideplot of him finally standing up to himself and the uncles get what they deserve. Some scenes would also be reinforce into the 1996 animated series like the song "Fugedaboudit"

Here's some bonus facts for Casper (1995): According to TV Tropes, before Christina Ricci got the part of Kat Harvey, the actresses that were considered were both Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst. Also according to TV Tropes: The actors that were considered to play Dr. James Harvey before Bill Pullman were: John Ritter, Tom Hanks, Dennis Quaid, Kurt Russell, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Tim Allen, Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, Michael Keaton, Martin Short, Chevy Chase and Phil Hartman. The actresses that were considered to play Carrigan Crittenden before Cathy Moriarty were: Glenn Close, Kathleen Turner, Carrie Fisher, Miranda Richardson, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rene Russo, JoBeth Williams, Debbie Harry and Elaine Hendrix. The actors that were considered to play Paul "Dibs" Plutzker before Eric Idle were: Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson, Rik Mayall, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Bill Murray, Alan Rickman, Bryan Cranston, Jason Alexander, Michael Richards, Daniel Stern, Gene Wilder, Stephen Fry, Patrick McGoohan, Leslie Nielsen and Gregory Peck. Kat was originally named Wendy.
I saw Casper when it was released in theaters. Me and my kids watch it about 300 times a year still. It’s a perfect movie and will stand the test of time for sure🖤🖤🖤🖤
I absolutely love this movie.. I had a huge crush on Devon Sawa. If I see its on even today I will watch Casper.. I thought Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci.did a awesome job.
My favorite part is when Casper turns into the boy at the end and dances with Kat. I get so emotional when I see that part and when her mom appears as the ghost wow I can’t put into words how good it is
I recently discovered your Channel and just LOVE your 10 things/facts videos! You almost got every movie I loved from the 80's and 90's. Even Krull! Thats crazy. Would you make a video about the musical movie 'Hair' starring Treat Williams, Beverly D'Angelo and John Savage? That was my fathers favorite movie and he passed away this year. It would be a pleasure
I saw this at the cinema when it came out with some friends from school and some of our parents including my mum. When it got to the bit about Casper saying how he died, I burst into tears. Still love the movie, though. And on the subject of pop culture references, I remember the animated series being absolutely full of it.
There was also a ps1 Casper game that was different to the one featured in this video. It was more of a puzzle solver game as you learn how to navigate the mansion and followed the movie story well. I really liked it and would recommend.
This makes me want to show this to my young kids this next Halloween. They are the perfect age for it. We also just moved to Maine this year so that makes it that much more fitting.
You left out one particularly cool 90s reference: "Marky-Mark, he's not!" Also, the theme song for the movie, "Remember Me This Way", is a GUARANTEED tear-jerker. (1/2/2022)
Yeah i remember hearing the Beetle juice theme in one of the trailers ( though I didn't actually watch Beetlejuice until several years later) and in another trailer for Casper they used music from the land before time, which was also composed by James Horner.
I rewatched this for the first time in years the other day, and I think it holds up brilliantly. Casper's Lullaby is still one of the most haunting, beautiful songs I've ever heard. I also think it was a wise choice that after the sad scenes of seeing Kat's mom and Casper in human form, to end with a bang on such a fun outro song. So many great choices. And the cgi is honestly so good considering! I think it helps that they're allowed to be done in a cartoonish way b/c I think the hardest thing to pull off with cgi are realistic human characters.
Casper is probably one of those few cartoons turned live-action movies I grew up with that still kind of works for me apart from the nostalgia. Maybe because Casper and the trio are able to retain simple cartoonish designs while also looking like "real ghosts", and in the context of the movie you're still able to buy into the reality that they had been real people once and aren't just cartoons when you see live actors like Bill Pullman and Cathy Moriarty appear as ghosts themselves. Other times when they try to adapt other classic non-human cartoon characters to live-action that are more flesh and blood than Casper I'd often find the end result to be less appealing than the initial cartoons when translating them into CGI, with more realistic looking eyes and hair, making you question if they should have even been adapted into live-action in the first place. I may not have been hearing very good things about the new Tom & Jerry movie that came out about a year ago now, but I have to give them props for actually wanting them to still look like the same 2D cartoon characters in CGI for a change when they could have easily gone the realistic route again.
My theory as to why Casper can't crossover even after his fathers death is that he's a very special kind of ghost. Everyone is put on this earth for a reason and Casper was so sweet and friendly in life that the mortal realm could not bear to be parted from his memory when he died so young. Instead of being stuck with "unfinished business" he has a new lease on life (or should I say afterlife) of spreading friendship as a spirit.
I was 9 when this came out and Christina Ricci was my first Hollywood crush ever after seeing this movie. I didn't know why I liked her because I was still a kid, but I did.
There was also a Casper game on the PS1 it was kind of a puzzle game as you go around the mansion unlocking abilities and fighting the ghostly trio to unlock lazeeious pieces among other things it's a pretty fun game if you like puzzle games
Seems there would be a better place to chill out with a ghost than on a roof of a lighthouse at night. I couldn’t help but think Casper wanted to “accidentally” knock her off the lighthouse and then he would have her as a ghost friend forever.
Ray's cameo, as well as the film's tone and design, are why I like to imagine that this, 'Ghostbusters' & 'Poltergeist' all exist in the same universe. =)
Even when I was a kid, I thought it was stupid that Casper (as a ghost) was depicted as a child (maybe 7 or 8 yrs old) then when Casper turned human, he was made to be a teenager. That just made zero sense to me
I hated the ending. It just feels in character for Casper to want to be a human. It seems like they were going with the message of giving up the things we want the most to make someone happy, and learn to appreciate who you really are like the cartoons message. Only to ruin it by making him a sexy 90s teen for a few seconds and have millions of fangirls gush over him, wanting him to stay as a human forever. It would be like if in Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock sacrificed his dream and died only for NYC to still blow up. And this was a time when every movie had to have a sequel, What if this had a sequel? How tf could you make a ghostless Casper, and his adventures as a human. Who would want to see that!?!
You know, this movie actually fits in timeline wise with the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Why was Ray by himself? By this point, Venkman went into advertising and Winston went into financing with Egon going off to Summerville. Kinda creepy how well that works.
I believe it was confirmed by Aykroyd or whoever that Casper (1995) is canon to the Ghostbusters universe. So this movie is a weird spinoff to the Ghostbusters movies along with Ghostbusters 2016. Let that sink in.
I think it might have been worth mentioning the song and dance number that was cut from the film because of the impracticality of animating it at the time. I wish it had been included as a bonus track on the soundtrack CD, which I bought the day I saw the film, since I just positively loved the music. CGI wasn't "the only" way to bring characters into the movie, as evidenced by 1964's "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" or 1977's Pete's Dragon. Unlike Roger Rabbit who was a cartoon *in the story*, the title characters of those other films would likely have been done as photorealistic GCI except that no such technology existed in the 1960s and 1970s.
casper's cartoons where not very happy go lucky. his first short, after scaring people away instead of making friends, casper tries to kill himself several times.
The shorts from 1945 - 1949 Were really dark and had a gritty post WWII atmosphere. Even the house Casper stays when meeting his first friends looks broken down. It felt grounded and real at times. None of the animals he befriends talked either. I wish there was a new Casper movie that sticks more closer to what Seymour Riet originally intended for the character and the more realistic grounded world.
It's a cold, snowy day here in Colorado... I think I'll rewatch Casper while staying in where it's warm. Also... had a childhood crush on Wednesday Addams... I realized it was the same actor many years later!
This is great I wonder will you do a Dr. Seuss how the Grinch stole Christmas the Jim Carrey version next that Christmas movie also made by Universal Studios
A quick thing that I’d like to point out and this is something I just noticed while rewatching this movie: In the scene where Casper and Kat kiss and Casper turns back into a ghost, as well as the Halloween scene in general, one of the kids/party guests is dressed as Fred Flintstone. You can see it at 8:59 I like to think that this is somewhat a reference to the Flintstones movie since both films were made by Amblin.
Fun fact: Steven Spielberg wanted Casper to be like the 1990 TMNT movie with it's tone since he and his son loved it so much and approached the director of that movie 3 months after TMNT was made but he turned it down atyer being burned out of TMMT's success but he admitted to regret the decision. So The Crow director, Alex Proyas was then approached to direct the movie and wanted it more darker, less comedic and more deconstructism. His approach was to make it like Wizard of Oz where it's timeless, fantasy like and more mature themes for children. (Hmm a timeless fantasy movie with deep and darker tone? Basically Return to Oz. Awesome!!!) But he and Universal clashed their differences and he left weeks before production began. Supposedly, Silberling had to be shown by the already used concept art and models, meaning Whipstaff was originally meant for Proyas's vision. He would later say he too regretted leaving the project but disliked the movie we got, feeling it was a missed opportunity and felt the emotions came off forced. (I can see where he's coming from since The Crow and parts of Dark City were kinda heartbreaking)
I agree with you about the references having a charm, and i love them. But anyone who can't figure out Arnold, the Cryptkeeper, Eastwood, etc... is just... well a bit pathetic lol.
This is why I never pay attention to movie critics. Casper was a great heartwarming film.

what a fantastic film
If you're a 90s kid then you'll never forget that score.
I saw Casper when it was released in theaters. Me and my kids watch it about 300 times a year still. It’s a perfect movie and will stand the test of time for sure🖤🖤🖤🖤
The friendliest ghost you will ever find.
I absolutely love this movie.. I had a huge crush on Devon Sawa. If I see its on even today I will watch Casper.. I thought Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci.did a awesome job.
my younger brother loved this movie he had it on so much the vhs tape wore out . and we love christeina ricci.
My favorite part is when Casper turns into the boy at the end and dances with Kat. I get so emotional when I see that part and when her mom appears as the ghost wow I can’t put into words how good it is
I loved this as a kid.
One of my favorite movies. Love the scene where he ask Can I Keep You.
Yeah, I always cry when I hear it.
Nice Minty 👍🏻 one of my favorites as a kid. You should do Tommy Boy next!
Yeah i remember hearing the Beetle juice theme in one of the trailers ( though I didn't actually watch Beetlejuice until several years later) and in another trailer for Casper they used music from the land before time, which was also composed by James Horner.
I loved this movie and critics always seem to get it wrong, if they rave it sux if they hate it it’s probably good.
Also the part at the beginning scared me so much as a kid. That house looked so creepy lol
Watching this with an old boyfriend and liked the scene where Casper's uncles shout "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to
I think they said die if I want to.
@@TheConnonedrum yes that's right it's been a long time since I've seen it
@@sarahblunden4372 no worries. It's good to reminisce about the good days. I hope you get a chance to check this movie out again soon.
@sarahblunden4372 one of my fave jokes is where cat says, "drop dead!"
And one of them said, "too late!"
Lol!
I love this movie, it's fun and moving. Nice video.
I love the piano in Casper’s Lullaby. The piano is more prominent in the movie than on the soundtrack.
Just gave this movie to my niece for Xmas 💙
Bravo Minty. I've loved every 10 Things... you've published but this one means a lot to me and my little brother and you covered this perfectly.
I have never seen Casper, but I read the comics back in the day
I remember when it came out. I really liked it. Showgirls really, like you said. But movies I like usually don't do good. Go figure.
I agree with your review. I didn't watch it until it came on cable years later. I love how dark it gets, and the soundtrack is mesmerizing.
I was too young when this movie released but I did grow up and watched it at the end 90s. And I love it.
I love this movie I can’t watch it without crying though. I remember watching this on the way to my grandparents in the car on a crappy tv 😢
Casper is one of my favorite 90s movies
I was 9 when this came out and Christina Ricci was my first Hollywood crush ever after seeing this movie. I didn't know why I liked her because I was still a kid, but I did.
This was the first movie I ever remember seeing at the drive ins and I was so excited
Jesus. I saw this in THEATERS! Man I'm old...
There was also a Casper game on the PS1 it was kind of a puzzle game as you go around the mansion unlocking abilities and fighting the ghostly trio to unlock lazeeious pieces among other things it's a pretty fun game if you like puzzle games
Another enjoyable upload well done thanks for all the videos in 2021 Happy New Year
I love Casper! Love your videos!
Hilary Duff plays Wendy the good little witch in “Casper Meets Wendy” 🤩🥳
Seems there would be a better place to chill out with a ghost than on a roof of a lighthouse at night. I couldn’t help but think Casper wanted to “accidentally” knock her off the lighthouse and then he would have her as a ghost friend forever.
Ray's cameo, as well as the film's tone and design, are why I like to imagine that this, 'Ghostbusters' & 'Poltergeist' all exist in the same universe. =)
This was my favorite kid's movie during the '90s, along with Matilda!
There was a really good PS1 Casper game it was a puzzle game and I rember playing it all the way through several times.
This movie was amazing and I always wondered wat a sequel would look like.
@@brandonspain12345 2016 is not Canon with main continuity.
I still love this movie. Watched it the other night and laughed, was captivated, and shed a tear lol
casper's cartoons where not very happy go lucky. his first short, after scaring people away instead of making friends, casper tries to kill himself several times.
Who else had the pizza hut Casper ghost puppets? God those were cool!
I once heard a little girl, in a toy store, call him Capser, so that's how I refer to him.
I love your videos, always really interesting and nice to have on auto when I’m working
Pop culture references (or product placement) also poisoned the Flintstones movie. The 90s were insufferable with that and kids' movies.
I think every movie tried to be like Aladdin in the 90s. Even the Trio look more like Genie than their cartoon counterparts.
Dude I need to rewatch this movie. Thanks for the nostalgia minty!
It's a cold, snowy day here in Colorado... I think I'll rewatch Casper while staying in where it's warm.
Also... had a childhood crush on Wednesday Addams... I realized it was the same actor many years later!
I loved the fact that the interior of the set for the Mansion was used for the Backstreet Boys music video for "Everybody (Backstreet's back)".
This is great I wonder will you do a Dr. Seuss how the Grinch stole Christmas the Jim Carrey version next that Christmas movie also made by Universal Studios
A quick thing that I’d like to point out and this is something I just noticed while rewatching this movie:
In the scene where Casper and Kat kiss and Casper turns back into a ghost, as well as the Halloween scene in general, one of the kids/party guests is dressed as Fred Flintstone. You can see it at 8:59
I like to think that this is somewhat a reference to the Flintstones movie since both films were made by Amblin.
The ending gave me many many feels.
Also, I'm certain Ricci's performance in the 2 hit 'Addams Family' movies had a lot to do with her casting.
I agree with you about the references having a charm, and i love them. But anyone who can't figure out Arnold, the Cryptkeeper, Eastwood, etc... is just... well a bit pathetic lol.
They're iconic. I think every generation would recognize them.
