The honor and respect anyone who's done what you've done but if there was a god there wouldn't have been a war in the first place your own courage fortitude and good fortune brought you back home alive
I had killer seats on this tour, I had basically the same seat three nights in a row, third row on Jerry's mike. I wore an Uncle Sam top hat covered with stickers to shows at the time. When the band came out on stage in Worcester, Clarence Clemmons was amazed to see me in the exact same spot as the night before in a different city. He walked over to Jerry and pointed me out, baffled. Garcia looked at him and shrugged, and said something like "he's always there."
I have loved this song for decades, and have seen Jerry Band and the Grateful Dead hundreds of time. I never knew the origin of this song. I always figured it was an old standard/traditional like so many of the gems from the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire. I am only slightly familiar with Bruce Cockburn, he had a minor hit here in the states some years back with Rocket Launcher.. Thank you so much Tony Quintero for that piece of knowledge. I will now go seek out the original and learn more about Bruce Cockburn. Peace!
My brother just passed away on 5-31-2024. The only thing that kept me sane was jerry singing "stand up tall and pretend we're strong" I should say keeping me sane.
Following the Dead and Jerry for almost two decades (1974-1995) & hundreds of shows, I can honestly say those shows, the people I met and the times we had will be the closest thing to Heaven on Earth that we will ever experience until we really get there.
Not hearing it. I hear him play the E and A chords followed by the walk up. Listen to a few versions of this song and you'll hear he almost always does this. What's also is how many ideas he reuses in his solos on this song. He seems to have had basic templates or ideas he used and improvised around. He seems to have done more pure improvising in the Dead than he did in the JGB.
No, there will never be another Jerry Garcia. But there will always be endless volumes of his, and The (great) Grateful Dead song sources to carry us through these sorry sucky times we live through. Endlessly, do rest with THAT.
Awesome!! I was at this show, scored 13th row seats in the lot because I was wearing a fuzzy Day-Glo orange hair and beard looking for a miracle.....and it worked! Thanks
Absolutely my favorite JGB tune, Kudos to Mr. Cockburn for the original song. Great solos by Jerry and Clarence. Jerry doesn't phrase his solos in sentences or even paragraphs, but rather in chapters! But... let's not forget the amazing rhythm talents of Melvin Seals on organ. He's often overlooked, and he provides the rich bed over which Jerry - and others - solo. So, here's to you Melvin!
Sitting in a surgery waiting area. Surgery for my mother who is 84 and suffering from various health problems. Surgery after the passing of her first born son my brother. Waiting for a miracle
First let me say thank you for the post. The audio is a little off but so what.... I loved it anyways!!! I wish Clarence could have played more with JGB he fits in quite nice and shines when Jerry gives him the nod. After this teaser I went ahead and watched the full show and then again the next day. Oh how I miss JGB. Just a little caveat Jerry shows ushow easily he improvises little bits here and there at 4:34. It just brings a smile to my face 🤪🤪🤪. Yes that kind of smile. Thanks again!!
Ya know, any song, when Jerry sang it kinda became a Jerry Song. I was so lucky to see about 15 shows in 1989, the year of this video! Hair Peace ps Hey now
funny, I was looking for Bruce Cockburn's song and this came up- I guess everyone thinks this is a Jerry Garcia song or something. Maybe even Bruce does!
Hey people we are living a miracle in the right here and now. BE GRATEFUL FOR IT😊
There had been times where I was in war and I had him and his songs with me . That is what made me make it back home safe and god
Amen
PEACE be with you

Perfect song for Garcia. I've been a fan of Bruce Cockburn for years. I'm happy to see Jerry covering one of his songs.
He is an incredible Canadian songwriter. I've see him as a solo act & with a Jazzy trio.

John Smith Bruce Cockburn composition
I always loved the way he would smoothy transition out of a guitar solo with a snappy riff. What an great guitarist!
