Gosh that's a horrifying proposition. I'd just finished watching the silent film of Jekyll and Hyde. Apparently tonight is one for musing on the good and evil in people and their divided natures. The film begins with a quotation which suggests that though we all have both, we choose our dominant trait and that is what we become. Judging from the state of the world at the moment I feel as if a lot of people have made bad choices! Ah well, human nature...
‘We had calculated wisely’. Excellent phrase. And always a phrase that potentially signals the end of all things. Once again, a brilliant narration of a barely remembered tale. So entertaining - thank you.
Let me let you in on a neat (magic) trick about that movie: The lied to you. Bowie does not play Tesla. He plays Tesla's assistant. The character who acts like Tesla's assistant is in fact actually Tesla. Go rewatch it with this in mind, or look it up here on youtube. Its hinted at in the movie; its one of those things you only catch on a second watch through. Tesla charades as his own assistant and has his assistant play him, for privacy and security reasons, (he is being pursued by Edison's thugs.) a common theme is duplicity & doubles (the twin magicians brothers, the chinese twins, the bird's "Where is his brother" line etc.) Bowie's character is never shown using the machines, always its the so-called assistant who makes the calls. So basically Bowie plays an actor hired by the real Tesla to act as Tesla, giving the real Tesla the freedom to work on his machines as the assistant.
@@FrenchEdward06 Many thanks, Mr. French. I love a ripping good yarn with a great narrative voice behind it. Some say that your voice reminds them of the voice of Vincent Price. I agree. I met Mr. Price back in the early 1970s. He was a great gent.
Thanks, Paul. That was the idea. Stock music. I can't identify the composer. But I like the idea that it conveys a sympathetic vibe. Thanks for listening. E.E.F.
You're welcome, Marty. But I could find no biographical data or photo for Mr. Wright, or I would have posted it in the credits. This sometimes means it's a nom de plume. E.E.F.
As always: the music, the thumbnail, the care with which the reading is put together - it's a classic piece of art and acting. THANKS.
Thanks, blixten2928. Be safe and well. E.E.F.
A splendid story well read. Thank you.
Wonderful as always Mr French! Thank you!
I appreciate that you listen. Cheers. E.E.F.

It's interesting M'lady, that AFTER recording this and listening, I realized it was indeed a riff on Jekyll & Hyde. Thanks for tuning in. E.E.F.

Yes, indeed Tom. The hubris of these damn eggheads! LOL. E.E.F.
Wow!! Another excellent story and superb performance Mr French! 👏👏
THANKS, Sebastian. E.E.F.
Another excellent performance. Thank-you.
Thanks for listening, Hugh! E.E.F.
This has always been a great story. And you make it much better.
A sentimental fave. Thanks @bigearl. E.E.F.
It sparked a memory of the film, The Prestige, wherein Tesla, played by David Bowie, made a similar machine.

@@MathewRenfro that's interesting, thank you, it's been a long time since I've seen it, and that section is the most memorable.
@@MathewRenfro Well, I know what I'm going to be re-watching tonight.
@@JohnSmith-ek8rj cool. Let me know what you think 🤔
EXCELLENT rendering of this tale! Thank you Mr. French, your yarns have become a nightly enjoyment for myself as well as many others.
I appreciate that Ricardo. Cheers. E.E.F.
This tale left me awestruck! Mr. French, as always, your narrative is stellar! Many thanks!
Glad to have you as a subscriber, Walter. Cheers. E.E.F.

Incredible choice of music. It gave me an old RKO movie vibe.

I had never heard of this author, so I googled him and his work. This story was published in '26. Thank you Mr. French.

What a magnificent story! Well done indeed!
HEY! Thanks, Brian. We love those good old fashioned Weird Science tales. Be safe and well. E.E.F.
reminds me of a 60s hammer type horror film called the asphyx. i wonder if it's an adaptation.
Good job! Thank you!
i subbed because of his lovely voice.
I love your voice...
RUclips should've recommended me your channel a long time ago. Clearly the algorithm needs work.
No Matter, D Gage. You found the Fiction Fantastique Channel. WELCOME. E.E.F.
That music at the beginning is really annoying if you are a bit deaf. It's really hard to differentiate between speech and music.
So in this story humans have "souls" but animals don't. 🙄 Lame writing.
OR.....perhaps animals just don't have an "evil" side. Whatever. This won't be a big fav of the A.S.P.C.A. E.E.F.
Please give animal abuse warnings.
