Same here! I think the graphics hold up decently well even today, obviously nothing spectacular and clearly a bit dated, but the game was a bit ahead of it's time. Halo 3 especially was.

yeah I've played it on XB1 it's challenging trying to get the vehicles to go where I needed them at times I'm hoping it'll be easier for me on keyboard and mouse

Halo 2A did a really good job of preserving the visual style and direction of the levels despite having improved graphics. Halo CEA felt like the developers didn't quite "get" the levels. The best example is probably 343 Guilty Spark. From the mysterious, cold, foggy forest of the original they turned it into this bright saturated forest.

Red Engine might take mouths to rebuild and update to make a HD Remake of said game. Liquid Core Engine might take years rebuild and update to make a HD Remake of said game. One might have a simpler easier way to change textures and simple shaders but the lack to extend to next gen effects like light shafts and bump/displacement mapping. While the other might have the ability to extend to some capabilities of soft-shadows (because the engine previously was ahead of the game with shadows that looked rough/sharp) Developers rarely have the chance to completely rebuild an old game in a new engine 1st of all, let alone having to start over from scratch and most of the time not having the previous LEAD developers there to help because of the time gap, things can drag on for a very long period of time until... PROJECT CANCELLED. and if a good remake comes out... Developers/Publishers don't even have to tell the truth of how long they had the project in the works. SEVIONUS DOREGA I know I'm a little late but, as an artist, I totally agree with you. Making a game is extremely difficult, at least making a running and working one. From an extreme example, I think we can all agree that drawing a stick figure is much easier than an accurate portrait, with all of the details of a normal human. Then try to create a 60 FPS animation of that portrait running around and, I don't know, shooting a Grunt in the head. From my perspective, they put a lot of detail into this game and I appreciate that. Of course, I am only defending the visual standpoint.

The original had a doomier vibe to it. The hard edges and cold stone surfaces made indoor areas look very harsh and unwelcoming, and the buildings had a bleak, almost apocalyptic feel. The new lighting, textures and models make everything look much more futuristic, but they lose the dourness that made the original so memorable. Love what they did with the nature environments though, much more exotic.
Artistically speaking, having a pitch black hallway full of enemies that can only be seen when you fire your gun or use a flashlight is pretty cool but gameplay wise, I’m glad they lightened it up a bit.
I'm playing the MCC (my first time Halo) and when I completed Halo:CE and started Halo 2 Anniversary yesterday, I was literally blown away by the huge difference.

And even if I spent more money building it I just recover it on steam spending just 15€ on a game you have to pay 60€ on PS4/xbox one or even better wait of xmas sales and buy 20+ game while you buy 1. Plus if some of my pc internal components fail I just can remplace it >myself< with a new one. If some of your PS4/xbox one fail you are screwed, send it to technical support for 2 months just for them to send it back to you and then fail again 1 week later or buy a new one.
I do notice that the artistic element got lost in translation from the Original to the Anniversary. The dark, haunted feel is captured much better in the Original.
Its funny how when you jump in it gives you the same feeling as when it first came out, at the time it was impressive for the era and the anniversary really brought that feeling back

Halo 2 Anniversary is proof that 343 is capable of making a Halo game look incredible, idk why they turned around and made such poor design choices with Halo 4 and 5, but I'm excited that they're going back to this "original" art style for Infinite. I just hope the story is as good as Halo 2.

You guys clearly need some glasses or stop lying, saying the PS4 or Xbox One looks better in multi-plats is completely debatable. The Xbox One clearly looks 1000x better here there's no debate. They didn't just up the resolution and add AA they actually redid the entire game, Halo 4 is the only version that they upped the resolution and added AA because the game is from 2012, not 2004.
Something about the old graphics brings back some feeling of nostalgia i don't get with the remastered, even though it looks better, i will always love classic Halo 2.
I’m here cause Halo is being remastered for PC :). I found in some areas the graphics, colour palette and the artistic design was better for the original. Some examples: 2:33 For a game this old those reflections and skyboxes are amazing with many tones and colours. 4:43 Same here and the light beams r better and then distance blur feels more natural.

I like the remastered in most of these comparisons, but is it just me or is the water quality of the lake at 2:33 look better and more realistic and feel more alive in the original as compared to the remastered?
I remember playing age of empires III and in the graphics options setting the higher detailed bloom, shaders, and shadows settings would give the water the appearance of the original and setting them to low would give the water the appearance of the remastered in this video. So to me it doesn’t make sense why they would use a lower quality for the water in certain background images than in the original. Because like I said I can relate this directly to how the water would look at these settings in age and it’s eerily similar. The mountains do have more detail yes in the remastered. But to me the water in the background is much more important in the immersion and creating the life of it. And the remastered water in this particular background image just feels lifeless and distant. Whereas the original makes you feel like you are really there
I think overall, the updated graphics look awesome. I really like the new maps. Sure, they look a little... too... a little too Halo 4 like but its okay. I don't like the warthog, the SMG or the new Elites. The old elites... they look... better. I can't really explain it

Bungie have so just got such a special touch, a unique sauce, they’re art styles are unique and subtle at the same time, and they’re gunplay and movement and sound and music and level design and atmosphere. they’re exceptionally flawless..
Funny thing is every time I look at the anniversary footage, I think it's the original because 1. that's how I remember the graphics 2. graphics are so good these days that even the remaster doesn't look as good anymore.
I remember playing H2 when I first jumped on Xbox live early 2000s. It was a big improvement from playing CE on xbc. My gripes were that CE wasn’t on live and that they removed the original pistol! I’m still on Xbox live till this day.
The original art style looks like an oil painting really. I like the way it looks. The new style looks great as well but I like the oil painting style better. That's why I play it in the original style more but I do switch back and forth between both of them. :)

This makes me realise the problem with good graphics. The Flood in the original graphics scare the crap out of me. I have a feeling the fact that they have the same flat shading as everything else results in my brain adding in all the horrible liquidy messy details of the flood, whereas the new graphics give you those details, so it doesn't seem so scary because the graphics don't show it
I think stuff was simply scarier in older games because it was even more disfigured than intended. The monsters from System Shock 2 still give me the creeps.
The anniversary elites look almost perfect, but they still haven't gotten them to look the way they did in 1-3, with their sleek, low profile heads. If you pause it at 0:46 you'll see what I mean. Why do they insist on having the mandibles spread out like that? And the helmet is too big. Basically, their heads used to have a very compressed shape, with horizontal angles for everything; the helmet and the mandibles lined up, the mandibles were very close to the face, and when they shut their "mouth" is closed off the whole shape. Now everything is sticking out at different angles, too wide and beefy. But yeah, they look way better here than in Reach and onwards.
It's sad all the halo games arnt on the PC. HALO is hands down my favorite game of all time. Can't beat all the hours of multiplayer with friends or co-op mode. Or hell, halo CE on pc just blowing shit up on blood gultch. The graphics may not be the best today but I still play halo CE and i wish HALO3 was on pc. Halo 3 was the best one., graphics were amazing for the time and still look good. Gameplay was perfect. No dumb jetpacks or powerups. 343 Just ruined halo it feels.

I hated how the 2014 build had broken sound for voice actors whilst in game. In Halo 2 PC, I could hear Miranda, Johnson & Spark have their entire conversation in the control center without my distance affecting the volume of the sound. But in anniversary, be it classic or remastered mode, I can hardly hear shit of their conversation because I stand 10 feet away & I can't hear Johnson's yelling & Miranda's conversation with Spark fades in & out. Dafuq? In Delta halo, the 1st in game Dialouge was an ODST (Chips Dubbo) telling you *"Sir, We gotta neutralize those turrets!"*. You could hear that loud & clearly on the classic disks for old Xbox & PC versions, but anniversary makes it impossible to hear him despite being just 10 feet away.
Westdog 01 No I'm fine with Halo being rated T in the US. I live in Europe. and there they don't have ESRB ratings, but PEGI in the country I live in. And it's still 16+. It's just the fact that Halo 5 isn't like the classics and have these game mechanics like all other modern day shooters have. Halo has a T rating because there isn't blood.

Even though they did an amazing job on the remake and even went out and updated the models for the weapons, NPCs and Vehicles, I still believe they could have done a little better at the AI and some minor effects like water, shading and such, otherwise, it was an amazing remake
Keep in mind that the game used the same engine for everything other than graphics, so things like AI and water rippling couldn't actually have been implemented and still allowed for convenient switching of graphics.

I own it. There are some parts that are okay, some that are amazing, and parts that were either barely retouched or look worse than the original. Also near the end of the game, playing in Remastered mode causes horrible framerate drops. Good overall though, just could've easily been better.

Really appreciate the in-depth comparison. Seems like the newer graphics were overdone in quite a few areas. I'll have to play through it myself sometime, but as of now, I'm not a fan of the changes (especially Miranda Keyes). Love that they included the option to restore the original graphics.

This really doesn't do it justice, just started playing through Halo 2 Anniversary on MCC and in motion on my 50 inch TV it looks mightily impressive. Although I was surprised how well the original holds up its still no patch on the remastered version.

That purple Covenant Energy Sword look feels extremely nostalgic even though I’ve never played this game.
I do notice that the artistic element got lost in translation from the Original to the Anniversary. The dark, haunted feel is captured much better in the Original.

Halo 2 Anniversary is proof that 343 is capable of making a Halo game look incredible, idk why they turned around and made such poor design choices with Halo 4 and 5, but I'm excited that they're going back to this "original" art style for Infinite. I just hope the story is as good as Halo 2.

You guys clearly need some glasses or stop lying, saying the PS4 or Xbox One looks better in multi-plats is completely debatable. The Xbox One clearly looks 1000x better here there's no debate. They didn't just up the resolution and add AA they actually redid the entire game, Halo 4 is the only version that they upped the resolution and added AA because the game is from 2012, not 2004.

I found in some areas the graphics, colour palette and the artistic design was better for the original. Some examples: 2:33 For a game this old those reflections and skyboxes are amazing with many tones and colours. 4:43 Same here and the light beams r better and then distance blur feels more natural.

This is what I try to tell people. The original graphics are better in some places.

I remember playing age of empires III and in the graphics options setting the higher detailed bloom, shaders, and shadows settings would give the water the appearance of the original and setting them to low would give the water the appearance of the remastered in this video. So to me it doesn’t make sense why they would use a lower quality for the water in certain background images than in the original. Because like I said I can relate this directly to how the water would look at these settings in age and it’s eerily similar. The mountains do have more detail yes in the remastered. But to me the water in the background is much more important in the immersion and creating the life of it. And the remastered water in this particular background image just feels lifeless and distant. Whereas the original makes you feel like you are really there

The original art style looks like an oil painting really. I like the way it looks. The new style looks great as well but I like the oil painting style better. That's why I play it in the original style more but I do switch back and forth between both of them. :)

I have a feeling the fact that they have the same flat shading as everything else results in my brain adding in all the horrible liquidy messy details of the flood, whereas the new graphics give you those details, so it doesn't seem so scary because the graphics don't show it

The anniversary elites look almost perfect, but they still haven't gotten them to look the way they did in 1-3, with their sleek, low profile heads. If you pause it at 0:46 you'll see what I mean. Why do they insist on having the mandibles spread out like that? And the helmet is too big. Basically, their heads used to have a very compressed shape, with horizontal angles for everything; the helmet and the mandibles lined up, the mandibles were very close to the face, and when they shut their "mouth" is closed off the whole shape. Now everything is sticking out at different angles, too wide and beefy. But yeah, they look way better here than in Reach and onwards.
It's sad all the halo games arnt on the PC. HALO is hands down my favorite game of all time. Can't beat all the hours of multiplayer with friends or co-op mode. Or hell, halo CE on pc just blowing shit up on blood gultch. The graphics may not be the best today but I still play halo CE and i wish HALO3 was on pc. Halo 3 was the best one., graphics were amazing for the time and still look good. Gameplay was perfect. No dumb jetpacks or powerups. 343 Just ruined halo it feels.

I hated how the 2014 build had broken sound for voice actors whilst in game. In Halo 2 PC, I could hear Miranda, Johnson & Spark have their entire conversation in the control center without my distance affecting the volume of the sound.
But in anniversary, be it classic or remastered mode, I can hardly hear shit of their conversation because I stand 10 feet away & I can't hear Johnson's yelling & Miranda's conversation with Spark fades in & out. Dafuq?
In Delta halo, the 1st in game Dialouge was an ODST (Chips Dubbo) telling you *"Sir, We gotta neutralize those turrets!"*. You could hear that loud & clearly on the classic disks for old Xbox & PC versions, but anniversary makes it impossible to hear him despite being just 10 feet away.

Even though they did an amazing job on the remake and even went out and updated the models for the weapons, NPCs and Vehicles, I still believe they could have done a little better at the AI and some minor effects like water, shading and such, otherwise, it was an amazing remake
Keep in mind that the game used the same engine for everything other than graphics, so things like AI and water rippling couldn't actually have been implemented and still allowed for convenient switching of graphics.
2004 and 2014 what did you expect? Not insulting the artists, but you can see the anniversary edition isn't that remastered. They didn't give it a push.

I own it. There are some parts that are okay, some that are amazing, and parts that were either barely retouched or look worse than the original.
Also near the end of the game, playing in Remastered mode causes horrible framerate drops. Good overall though, just could've easily been better.

Really appreciate the in-depth comparison. Seems like the newer graphics were overdone in quite a few areas. I'll have to play through it myself sometime, but as of now, I'm not a fan of the changes (especially Miranda Keyes). Love that they included the option to restore the original graphics.

This really doesn't do it justice, just started playing through Halo 2 Anniversary on MCC and in motion on my 50 inch TV it looks mightily impressive. Although I was surprised how well the original holds up its still no patch on the remastered version.
