- This is 2nd video highlighting kalkwasser dosing from Chris Meckley of ACI Aquaculture. Last video, we have gotten very valid complaints that we didn't really cover how Chris exactly dosed kalkwasser to his systems. We all know the benefits of kalkwasser and I felt that it wasn't my best work so while I was shooting different things in his facility not too long ago, I asked to do this one for the people that requested the detailed version of how he actually dosed his systems.
We went through step by step, even got Chris to give up his formula as well as his apex screens for you guys to use it as a reference. Sorry that it took so long, hopefully you guys will enjoy the information!

I appreciate you adding this content on the ACI / Chris' Method for dosing Kalkwasser based solely on PH. Beautifully simple and I look forward to implementing this system myself. It's so easy I think many people think that something is missing in the equation / method. The reality is many people tend to over-complicate things. I am grateful and I know others will also be. This is critical content and it's short and to the point. Nothing to get confused on.

Another method that works well for Chris in an aquaculture facility but might not work well for home aquariums. Your skimmer depends on water level - If you just dose based on pH and not evaporation then a slight increase in water level will impact your skimmer. Chris looks like he uses external skimmers which is not impacted by water level.
Also in smaller tanks this could swing salinity
Most sumps have the skimmer in a place where the water level doesn’t change.

@@TheTrevor40 And most sumps have a small return chamber. When that chamber is overfilled it impacts the skimmer chamber
@@ReefingwithOeasy fix, if your sump level rises say 1/2” then raise your skimmer up 1” so the impact is less.
Salinity swing is nothing to worry about. It happens everyday in the ocean and sometimes large swings can happen. Corals don’t care about the small swing from dosing total evaporation in 12 hr. If it did then why are my systems thriving and many hobbyists system doing the same.
Reefing is a lot more simple than these companies selling you complication, make it out to be.
@@ReefingwithO i have a Waterbox and a Red Sea. I run Kalk and the waterline nowhere near bottoms out each day.

I love Chris, and he may have written the Bible on how he doses kalkwasser, but there are many ways to do it, I dose slurry because of evaporation issues. I use a smaller vessel (10 gallons) obviously more concentrated kalk (1/4 cup per 10 gallons), a jebao pump to mix, and the same exact programming he uses and achieve the same results. I even run through that entire 10 gallons in about 3 to 4 days.

Thanks for the info! My only issue is that my ALK and calcium would shoot through the roof. I understand he says PH is the driver but I can’t seem to let the ALK and calcium go. Maybe after my reef fills in more and I have more uptake in the major elements I will give it another try.
I was the same way until I observed the corals thriving with an Alk of 13.6 in 1 of our systems. #’s make reefing. Complicated, if everyone would just look at the corals and let them tell you if something is wrong, your #’s thing would be a thing of the past. Yes Calcium can rise but water changes will keep it in check.

Remember the corals will tell you everything. #’s can and will mess with your head.
I have a acro tank that is just frags at the moment, holding pH steady i see a daily swing of over 1dKh alk peaking right before the lights come on. . . Ive began to notice issues with color and PE. Maybe once the tank fills out this will ne a great option.
Hi guys. I'm pretty sure you clean the kalk line. How often do you clean it and what method do you use? I usually clean my line out monthly with warm vinegar/RODI.
Good addition. Yes, you can absolutely maintain the lines.
We clean/replace ours every 3-6 months depending on the time of the year.
Replace because it is cheap and fast. 1/4” airline tubing
If cleaning vinegar forced through the line with a syringe over and over will clean them like new.
@aciaquaculture yeah I just run it through the Kamoer stp Pump for about 2-3 minutes and its clear.

Can't say that I agree with not using a kalk reactor. I think he just has not found one big enough for his systems volume.
Kalk reactor has its place, this is just the method chris created and has helped lots of reefers along the way. He's been reefing for a loonnnggg time and if there were someone to listen to, he's the guy. But again, there's no one way to do this hobby. A million ways to skin a cat.
how can you do this without Apex
pH controller and do it manually or with different controllers.
Why is mine only at a ph of 12.3?
That's within the variable in margin of error of the probe. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Water temp plays a roll in how saturated the solution will become, 70-80 is ideal. Higher less will go into solution colder more will go in solution raising the ph even higher than 12.44

I tried that. But the noise from the giant fans and pumps running in the background will be almost unbearable.
