Killdeer Plover Broken Wing Dance - Protecting their nest

- A couple of the techs that work for me were at a site, and found these interesting birds on the roof. They would do a 'broken wing dance' in an attempt to lure you away from their nest if you got too close. After some research, I found the name of the bird to be a 'Killdeer Plover' (Charadrius vociferus). The dance, and watching them run (They are FAST) is really funny to watch. The babies are also really cute. A really cool bird.
I've heard this so many times at our family farm. They lay eggs in the driveway, and I was so upset because I thought the bird had been injured by a car passing. As it turned out it was the " broken wing dance" and she was fine much to my relief, I love these birds!!!!
I hear these things all the time, but never see them. Thanx for uploading. Now I know what to look for.
Clever girl.
Estas hermosas pajaritas son excelentes madres. Gracias por compartir estas lindisimas imágenes. Y sus polluelos son bien hermosos
Sometimes, if there's a parapet on all sides the chicks will starve on the roof. But, if you didn't find the "bodies" up there, then they probably found a way off.
They are ground nesting birds. They fly perfectly fine.
Plz keep in mind that even though the adult Kildeer is entertaining with it's "broken wing" display - designed to distract a predator away from the nest area - u shouldn't attempt to have this bird *entertain* u repeatedly. The longer it's away from the eggs, the more vulnerable the eggs are to heat from the sun, OR possible predators. Likewise, the adult bird is stressed by the activity, & has become very warm/thirtsy itself. Thanks ~
I hope the chicks got off the roof OK.
heeey there's another bird in that picture - if you look immediately below the ringed bird, in the middle between up and down, and then look slightly to the left, there it is. it's white.
... if this is mentioned in the rest of the video then sorry - i've only watched the first 10 seconds so far.
@desertdarlene - I'm sure they were fine...The roof had a parapit wall, so they couldn't just 'fall off'.
the bird looks really dehydrated @ 1:22. Poor birdy
It’s faking it
How did you get those close-up video of the adult? I can never get that close before they run away! Did you just leave the camera down by the nest? Wish I thought of that!
I have some that live in a parking lot near me. They hate people, but they’re fine with cars trundling around the lot. (When they nest, they do it on little islands around the lot where cars can’t go)
@brody12380 - Do some research, dumbass. Birds (in general) have the worst olfactory sensors of just about any animal - which means they can't smell things.
Touching birds does NOT mean the mother will reject them.
Your statement is completely untrue.
