I finally got to see the little chicks about 2 weeks ago. I always run into the parent sitting on her nest in a bed of rocks near my workplace. They are very sweet- let me get within 5 feet of them and never run away. When the chicks arrived (they were about a week old I guess), parent seemed to introduce them to me. All 3 of them came near me and looked as parent called. It was really great! There's a new nest this week.

Absolutely awesome, I live in southern Ohio and the killdeer are just absolutely delightful- I love 'em to pieces. However this is my first time seeing young, thanks man this was super cool to watch✔️
The scientific name of killdeer is Charadrius Vociferus. The term "vociferus" literally means "voice bearing" in Latin. It is an almost humorous acknowledgement of the bird's loud, distinct call that they like to make so often. In my experience, you hear a killdeer long before you see one.
Do they eat their eggshells? Twice now I’ve been monitoring a nest and each time they disappear close to hatch time. Shells and all. There was a tiny shell piece left today. I don’t know if something is eating them or what.
Removal of egg shells prevents predators from finding the scent of the newly hatched chicks. It’s done to ensure survival of our small feathery friends.
Ergo Sum Adrieyl Killdeer Hide their eggs in plain sight. They actually camouflage their nest site really well among the rocks. Their babies are born a lot more developed than tree nesting birds and are ready to start running around not long after hatching. Tree nesters’ young are extremely vulnerable and helpless until they become fledgelings. Killdeer parents will also pretend that they’re injured to lure potential predators away from their hidden eggs and chicks. It’s a different strategy, but it works!

At last.....I'm a gramma. Chicks just hatched today. I'll be glad when I can go into my back yard without mamma and daddy yelling at me.

They hide the eggshells. The chicks can leave the nest area just after they are dry so it's possible that they are just gone not eaten.

Why do they have to make nest on the ground instead of a tree. That makes them target number one
It's just their nature to nest on the ground in gravel.
