This late career Federer is my favourite Federer. It was hypnotic to watch a 37 year run around the court like he did, and my god that backhand was perfection for about 14 months.
This is probably the most competitive, most elite level tennis I’ve ever witnessed. Both players at the end of their prime, both absolutely crushing it. This is a treat from the tennis gods.

We will miss these two when, eventually, Father Time wins in the end. Astonishing scorelines. At the time, I felt Nadal was going to win in the fifth set; he seemed to have the upper hand and Roger had lost to Nadal in so many similar situations but Federer hit some remarkable shots ( not just the obvious winners to end the points) but more importantly deep top spin shots that got him back into points Nadal looked destined to win and Roger turned these rallies in his favour. His backhand in particular, withstood some serious assault from Rafa. That probably surprised Rafa. Admire both these legends

But I followed most of Nadal, and it was clear he was playing at barely 50% here.
