One of the greatest technical matches ever , Kyrgious was on fire and did everything but it wasn't enough , Federer came up with shots no other tennis player would ever come up with + returning Nick's missiles on the serve/ FH and that famous volley when nick unleashed a fire ball of a FH and Federer casually dropped it dead at the net , Goated performance .
Rafa-Dimitrov AO 2017 SF was the best match of the year, but the "2017 ATP match of the year award" is only given to non-Slam matches, as the Slams are operated by the ITF, not the ATP.
Genuinely some of the best tennis we had seen so far. My god what level. And if it hadn’t been for the legendary AO final, this would have probably been the match of the year back then.

First, he was facing a slower version of Nadal who had declined in the defense department (while Federer was also slower, his game is more offensive and has never needed so much of defense as Nadal's one). Second, none of those 2017 finals were on clay. Federer strategically avoided playing Roland-Garros in 2017 and 2018 to avoid facing Rafa. When Roger finally faced Rafa at RG 2019, he comfortably lost in 3 sets. Peak Federer (roughly 2005-2011) always won 1 set against Rafa at RG.

this is the best match i have watched ever in my 20 years of watching tennis.. that net shot of the bullet from Nick was a big lesson for Nick for life.. I think he must have never seen somebody take it like that.. After observing this match all this years.. i observed one thing why Nick lost the first and third set in tie breaker.. he hit double faults when he was trying to hit a strong serve on the second serve on both the occasions.. can you imagine he lost both the sets because of it.. yes it is..

Roger is the classiest guy in tennis. Definitely the greatest of all time. I like how he talks about Kyrgios in the interview. Very subtle remark about how he's now in his 2nd or 3rd year on tour ad it's good that everyone sees how he is as a player "and a person"... I think that's Roger mentioning in a subtle way about Kyrgios' stupid character. But in Roger's way, as a gentleman.
Lahyani umpired both of these Federer-Kyrgios encounters (Madrid 2015 + Miami 2017). What an honour to umpire such classic matches. Random observation, he said "Game set and match" in English by mistake instead of Spanish in the Madrid encounter, but announced the score in spanish. Oops! Also this Miami encounter is maybe the only time I can recall where the player who lost the coin toss chose the OTHER side of the net to start on. Although the sun was just setting so perhaps that played a factor. What an incredible match this was. Dont usually condone smashing a racket after a loss like Nick did here (bad sportsmanship) but in this case its kinda understandable given that someone in the crowd tried to call Nicks shot out throwing him off at a REALLY bad time. Kudos to Lahyani for not coding Nick for audible obscenity there, he knew the magnitude of the moment. It's not shown here but Nick yelled "What are you doing? Shut up! Shut the F--- up! What the F--- are you doing??"
I love it when ppl say Federer is mentally a weak player yet he managed to win so many close sets or whole matches like this one. Sure Djokovic and Nadal definitely went to his head too much at times but still easily top 15 toughest mentally player of ALL times, this includes all the Djokovics, Nadals, Murrays, Borgs, Lendls etc. That's why watching him was exciting, one time he came out of the locker room as the shitty uninspired Federer who targeted nets and outs, then all of a sudden he flicked the switch and turned the match around, being a Federer fan was so exciting because of that. He may not be the GOAT but he sure played exciting tennis with brilliant results against the best players. For me that's enough to remember him warmly.
