One reason why Tom Hanks is so successfull and popular: He is completly devoid of any cynicism. That is rare, especially in that business.

Not sure that's accurate. He's just positive. And easy to work with.
It's not so much being devoid of cynicism, like he was color blind to it. More like he's put in great effort and intelligence to not let cynicism bring him down. Same way you can't truly be brave without knowing fear.

This man makes me so overwhelmed! I've seen Turner and Hooch, Big, Forrest Gump, The Money Pit, Castaway, All the toy story movies, Saving Mr. Banks, Captain Rogers, Mermaid, etc...
All the genres he does so well and with such passion is what makes him my favorite actor ever! Plus, regardless of his talent, he just seems like a genuinely smart and nice guy. Unlike most celebrities who show their dark sides through interviews.

I met Hanks in 1987 when he was "nine movies in" (Dragnet). It's amazing to see how far he's come since then.

It was interesting seeing the juxtaposition between his great screen acting, and Mark Rylance more stagey approach in Bridge of Spies. That chemistry worked very well. Would like to see him do some stage work at some point.

+Andrea J. Good Luck to you. Become anything like Hanks you will have an absolute future ahead of you. He is inspirational. I don't agree sometimes in the amount of money actors make but when it comes to Hanks he is so real and most of his movies (95% I would say) is real and to the core.

this guy was born to be an actor. I haven't seen anyone with that kind of talent. Today, Daniel Day Lewis, Michael Fassbender, and Robin Williams (may come close) My personal favorite is Woody Harrelson. Very underrated. Tom Hanks could be considered the greatest and I could not argue
I liked Mr. Hanks when he first started making movies then I got a bit bored with him then around Philadelphia I realized that he was willing to transform but I still wasn't completely sold on his film choices. Recently, I really enjoy him again with Cloud Atlas and Captain Phillips. He's very, very smart and wildly talented and willing to go out on that limb that is snapping.
Really? That is interesting. What movies bored you in the beginning before Philadelphia? Forest Gump? A league of their own? Big ? Just to name a few. That amazes me that none of those impressed you and made you bored. Thank god you are not Siskel and Ebert I would have missed a many good movies.

Castaway, Joe Vs. the Volcano, Apollo 13, Forest Gump, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal... Tom Hanks and John Wayne are my favorite male actors. Props to Tom Cruise at #3, Kevin Cosner #4, Nicolas Cage, Gene Hackman, and Donald Sotherland. Love them all!

Mathew mac'conaughey said like him, he study the text in the beginning, read and read and read and After he learn, it's a good process to learn better and faster and to understand the character, in fact it's the most important part to become a great actor maybe, understand the text and the character instead just learning.

Tom was fucking brilliant in Captain Phillips. The ending scene is gut wrenching and at the time I didn't like to watch it but I was captivated by Tom's performance that I found myself watching some of the best acting I've seen.

Tom Hanks is up there with Liam Neeson and Will Smith, of the top three actors of all time. So instantly recognizable, as is Liam Neeson and Will Smith.
Come on. Liam and Will are fine, but how many Oscars (nominations) do they have? Hanks has more than both of them combined. geez.
It's not all about Oscars, it's about who you think from their performances and films has done well. And I grant you, yes Tom has more than both of them combined but I still think that Will and Liam are both great actors hence why Liam (more than Will) and Tom are chosen to play in films again and again.
***** I think that has less to do with their acting ability and more to do with there box office pull. Not saying they are bad actors, but I couldn't compare them to the likes of Paul Newman, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson etc and even more modern actors like Christian Bale and Edward Norton.
Exactly i would add Phillip Seymour Hoffman , Joaquin phoenix ,Michael fassbender, also one of my all time favorites and critically marveled Daniel day Lewis not to mention cinema legends such as john wayne, James stewart, Humphrey bogart, Marlon Brando tom hanks is good and deserves his reputations but cmon okay will smith was good in 2 movies seven pounds and the pursuit of happiness and liam neeson is the same fucking guy in every movie.
