Yep, this is the CH 10 late news edition I was watching on the night. Couldn't believe how it unfolded. From the slightly optimistic idea that it might have just been a terrible accident, a small aircraft off-course, to the full blown disaster it turned out to be. I remember the ads kept on rolling, which seemed a little weird. Switched over to the ABC, who were taking a live BBC feed on the ground. It just got worse and worse....
Was watching this unfold that evening too, and I kinda agree with about the "optimistic idea" feeling - people would criticise Ten two decades after the fact, but from half a world away and how much further that felt then than now, I'm not sure anyone really grasped what it turned out to be until the second collision... so it would've been treated like any other breaking foreign news story at the time, especially at close to 11pm in eastern AUS. By the time they realised that, it likely would have been "stay on this for a bit, breeze through the finance segment [need to get their pay from big bank's stockbroking division, as Ten News always had... ugh] then hand over to the international feeds" - what initially ended up a mix of CNN US, CNNI and Sky UK to begin with. As you could see, they were already hoping they could switch over to their sports review... obviously that never happened. The horror story that followed, to which many of us here woke up to the next morning on our breakfast shows... yeah, enough has been said. :-/

I worked at Star City (now The Star) at the time, and we used to dink at the same pub in Pyrmont as the Channel 10 guys. Sandra was there one night, probably after she'd finished the news, and I was chatting my mates from work, and I said, "man, Sandra Sully's got great tits", and my mate nudged me. She was standing behind me, haha!
This is where, after 22 years of searching, having regretted not catching this live, I finally found what happened when Channel 10 are said to have been the first to break the TV news to Australians. I hope the RUclips channel owner hears my gratitude loudly and clearly!!!
Eerie. Everyone remembers this night - I was listening to this broadcast from another room, sitting on my parents computer using yahoo to search “accident in nyc” . Those first pics which were online were haunting.
I've been looking for this my entire life. I seem to have a memory from when I was 7, going to bed that night and having a glimpse of one of the towers on fire, but I don't know if it's a real memory or not, officially I only found out about 9/11 the next morning when Cheez TV wasn't on.
I was 9 years old so I would’ve been in bed , so I never watched this live. But I do remember my mum telling me in the morning that something happened in America last night, that a building got knocked down. I assumed it was the Empire State Building because I didn’t actually know of the Twin towers when I was a kid.
I was at a birthday breakfast in Chicago my senior year of high school……no other day in my life do i remember more details. Watching the news in every class. The crying. The teacher screaming when he found out his brother a pilot was flying out of Boston that day. Eventually loosing a friend who signed up for the army the following week (he was killed in Afghanistan).
This was interesting to see from the Australia time zone view I was living in Canada at the time and I remember I was driving going shopping and first heard it on the radio and thought I must be hearing wrong. I couldn’t work out what was happening just by listening with no visuals. There was just a lot of yelling going on ..on the radio. Sandra looks so young ❤
Can still remember watching this exact broadcast 🙁 I was up late working on an assignment for university and I had the news on in the background when they cut to the footage of the towers on fire. Still so shocking 😢
What I find most interesting is the backdrop of the gallery/control room is clearly real and you can see the shot of the WTC they cut to as an outside source from the start of the programme on the right. Imagining the newsroom, producers, editor working out what's going on and when to cut up the video and run the story.
I haven't seen the channel 10 broadcast since that night in 2001 but I still vividly remember almost all of those commercials Feels so surreal hearing all the initial speculation, thinking that somehow 2 accidents could happen almost 20 minutes apart during broad daylight. Also the fact that I guess people were hoping that the planes weren't occupied by passengers. I forgot how little footage we actually had available during that night. After 22 years of multiple angles, photos, documentaries, calls from the towers -- it just didn't seem as frightening and heartbreaking in real time back in 2001. Now after knowing every second of that day, it's truly so horrific
CNN was tapping into WABC''s coverage at the time of the second plane hitting and unfortunately WABC's anchor Steve Bartelstein was apparently being told by his producer not to play up the possibility of terrorism which was why he ended up sounding like a clueless idiot. All of the other anchors in the US and locally in New York were smart enough to say "this is terrorism' right away, but WABC stood all alone for the idiot prize at the time.
Its wierd to think about but there was probably many people in pubs drinking or having late dinners watching little tvs against the walls while this was happening. Im sure many truckies across the country were tuned into their radios late at night too. It mustve been crazy, i am too young to have witnessed this, but my parents remember where they were when it happened. Australia had a silent night that night.
I was watching this live. I was about to go to bed until Sandra announced the first plane. So I thought I would stay up for a bit. At 4am I finally went to bed after watching all night. 😢
I was up late doing an assignment and Sandra and the news was background noise. When I saw the second plane go into the tower I knew it couldn’t be an accident. Those poor souls how awful for them. How awful for everyone who lost people in the terrorist attack. Rest in peace never to be forgotten ❤
I was watching this live when that happened. I’d been out to dinner with the family and switched it on after returning home. I stayed up all night watching the surreal events of the two tower collapses one after the other. Sandra Sully did a great job holding herself together reporting what was happening in front of her.
I remember waking up a day after it happened and seeing this on the morning news as a 12 year old it was sad to see and hear about and at school in South Australia
I was on a gap year in 2001 and remember going to work the next day and going around to The Advertiser in Adelaide and buying hourly newspapers. I don’t think much work was done that day. People randomly crying, so much chatter about it, always trying to find out the latest details, and desperately afraid that we would all end up going into World War 3. It was absolutely incredible and so terribly sad and scary. The visuals of the second plane still shocks me.
I remember Dad was watching the news and I was in there with him when this came on. He called Mum into the room and she came in with a towel still wrapped around her from the shower. I was 11, and my teacher was making us read the papers so this happened it was mostly all we read about. It was kinda inescapable because my folks would watch the news morning and night and read the paper and comment on it too. I remember the teachers on my year block wanted to watch the president's address so they crammed us all into a common room and wheeled a TV in. Kinda the end of my childhood in a sense, even though I was nowhere near the terrible thing. But it really opened my eyes to horrifying realities.
This is odd because a mate and I saw the second plane hit live, it actually took a good minute or two after it hit for them to actually say something about it.
i did not remember 'boat people' being said so plainly and proudly at the time, like it may be a category of human. this country is so stupid - it's as ignorant today as 20+ years ago!
I remember this very clearly too…I’m sure though that our edition of the late night news with Sandra had already finished (I was watching in Adelaide, South Australia) and Sports Tonight with Tim Webster was on when they cut that broadcast and went back to Sandra to report the first plane.
We were walking between pubs when the first plane went in and it was on the TVs when we arrived at the second pub. We were discussing whether it was a crazy accident or terrorist attack until we watched live as the second plane hit the South Tower which removed all doubt. It seems insane that the news people took so long to realise a second plane had hit the other tower and that it had to be a deliberate attack.
Several US anchors announced (without confirming) that it was probably terrorism immediately upon the second plane strike. I slept thru it all; but my boss's housemate watched it unfold at the local. He ran home, pounded on the door, and cried: "WW3 has just started! Turn on the tv. WTC - gone! Pentagon - gone! White house - gone!".
I was watching live, waiting for sports tonight to come on, it never did. I remember my dad came out to the lounge room to tell me to go to bed and i just pointed at the tv. He sat down and we both watched as everthing unfolded. As soon as that second plane hit, you knew it wasn't an accident. It was terrorism. It was war.
I remember I had just gone to bed as I had just finished my Homework for school. Next thing I heard my Dad knocked on my door and said Turn your TV on right now. Something big has just happened in America. I got out of bed and turned on small TV on. When it wormed up I was shocked. I thought a war had just started in America.
Watch this, knowing what happened still feels as shocking as when it occurred... and during the news the people in 2nd plane were living their last moments... rip
I was playing mario Kart. on game boy advance. with this on in the background. and then was glued to the TV for most of the night after the news broke.
I remember being 20 years old and watching this the night it happened (melb time) I didn’t go to sleep m. I was glued as to what was un furling. Still remember how confused I was when I saw the 2nd plane fly into the other building
@@Jogwheel Ehhh I'd say 24 news cycle existed wayyy before then... O.J in an American sense was an earlier example of that. 9/11 was more of a distinctly global news event.
Fascinating to watch in retrospect from a corner of the world where people where preparing to go to bed whole watching the late-night news. At any given moment Australia is like a whole day ahead and in the opposite season cycle as the USA.
I remember watching this, I was doing uni homework. They cancelled the test the next day because of it and it was playing on all the tvs on campus. So sad! The world hasn’t been the same since.
I was working in a bar when this happened. Me and the other worker were shutting up shop as we saw it on the TV. First we thought it was a new die hard movie coming out. Then we realised.
I've calculated the time of this, to be 10:53:52pm assuming CNN bug time, the delay before the satellite reached Australia and Channel 10 may have been one or a few seconds later, bearing in mind this was still analog television, before the days of digital processing delays further complicating timing calculations

I remember this very clearly too…I’m sure though that our edition of the late night news with Sandra had already finished (I was watching in Adelaide, South Australia) and Sports Tonight with Tim Webster was on when they cut that broadcast and went back to Sandra to report the first plane.
Wow. This is really amazing to watch
I watched this newscast live…. Locked into memory
Thanks for sharing this - I never saw this because I went straight to bed after Rove.
Nothing was ever the same since.
37:28 - just $5.25??!! I'm holding them to that!
Gee, 9/11. I know exactly what i was doing at the time. I actually thought a world war was starting.
I have this on video tape. From Sandra Sullys face I knew something big was up
I was watching live, waiting for sports tonight to come on, it never did.
All of the airline news stories at the start just feel like an elaborate prank
Thousands of people were about to lose their jobs, it was big news at the time
Unfortunate but how could they know
Watch this, knowing what happened still feels as shocking as when it occurred... and during the news the people in 2nd plane were living their last moments... rip
I was up playing PC games and had the tv on with this on. It was so wild I went and woke my parents up to tell them.
My Vista Blinds are still going strong 23 years later. 5 ⭐️
My Vista OS still going strong on my Sony Vaio Sept 2024
I was playing counterstrike and everyone suddenly said to turn on the news.
It was 23 years ago this news break
bro the twisties ad 💀
I was watching this live with my ex in Hadfield. Surreal
I was playing mario Kart. on game boy advance. with this on in the background. and then was glued to the TV for most of the night after the news broke.
Amazing footage. I remember sept 11th was a sad day.
I remember being 20 years old and watching this the night it happened (melb time) I didn’t go to sleep m. I was glued as to what was un furling. Still remember how confused I was when I saw the 2nd plane fly into the other building
23:07 Windows 2000 used
I first learned ansett failed as i landed and our connecting flight was cancelled, ran to to the hire car desk and got a magna that almost flew.
I remember it being the only thing on television for pretty much an entire week. I remember the first show coming back on was seinfeld
Well that day, 10 was the only one that took a small break for Simpsons reruns at 6.30
I mean, 9/11 literally gave birth to the 24 hour news cycle we still have today.
@@Jogwheel Ehhh I'd say 24 news cycle existed wayyy before then... O.J in an American sense was an earlier example of that. 9/11 was more of a distinctly global news event.
@@jarkkehhh213 you are probably correct about that!
I walked into the loungeroom whilst this was on. Thought it was a movie
Fascinating to watch in retrospect from a corner of the world where people where preparing to go to bed whole watching the late-night news. At any given moment Australia is like a whole day ahead and in the opposite season cycle as the USA.
They cut away just before the 2nd plane hit...
I remember watching this, I was doing uni homework. They cancelled the test the next day because of it and it was playing on all the tvs on campus. So sad! The world hasn’t been the same since.
36:08 Dam he will last longer then the towers did after they were hit
I remember getting ready for bed (it was a school night and we were already in trouble for being up too late) when this bulletin came on.
Eds an incredible show by far one of the most underrated ever
I was working in a bar when this happened. Me and the other worker were shutting up shop as we saw it on the TV. First we thought it was a new die hard movie coming out. Then we realised.
I was watching this telecast as it happened and did not sleep at all that night (like many probably)
13:20 the first report
I've calculated the time of this, to be 10:53:52pm assuming CNN bug time, the delay before the satellite reached Australia and Channel 10 may have been one or a few seconds later, bearing in mind this was still analog television, before the days of digital processing delays further complicating timing calculations
Yes i remember the time too i was 34 @mrdouglasfromthedepartment8440
I was at work watching. I couldn’t believe that the newsroom took so long to realise that a second plane was the cause of the second explosion.
I was helping out preparing for my mum's upcoming 60th birthday celebrations on that following weekend.
Gold $271.65 an ounce 22:46 it is now $2665.13 an ounce. Why didn't I buy gold?
23:05 Another plane has hit the World Trade Center. 10 goes to a Finance/ST update
