  • We love NY hip-hop. As youngsters, we missed out on the golden era but there is no excuse to travel back to 1994 when most critics say this was the best year in hip-hop music. R.I.P. Guru.

Sampling was damn near the BASIS of early hip hop, and how most drum machines were sample based, yesterdays and todays hip hop producers sampled just about EVERYTHING, from drum sounds, drum breaks/loops, and various melodies used to create our early hits, MANY even used the same sounds, drum loops/breaks HUNDREDS of times and just recreated them differently... Creativity at it's finest!!!

Yes PREMIER is from Texas originally and GURU is from Boston originally . But GANG STARR was founded in Boston by GURU & BIG SHUG. GURU decided to take rap very serious so he moved to NYC where he eventually met PREMIER. PREMIER joined GANG STARR. If you asked D.J. PREMIER he will tell you that GANG STARR didn't make NYC. NYC MADE GANG STARR. PREMIER was taught by legends like LARGE PROFESSOR of the group MAIN SOURCE and D.J. MARLEY MARL both from different parts of Queens,NYC and GURU sharpened his skills in NYC because the competition here was FIERCE! They spent a lotta years in NYC living in Brooklyn, Queens,The Bronx. If you study their albums you'll hear clearly that they represent NYC! Not Boston or Texas. They have songs dedicated to NYC , not Boston or Texas. GANG STARR represents Brooklyn to the fullest! I'm just schooling y'all on the history. Your show is DOPE 🔥! Keep up the good work youngins👍!!!!

Boston is to Guru what Harlem was to Tupac. Tupac admitted to being born & bred in NYC but then he later screamed, yelled & repped for Oakland & Los Angeles. Guru was Boston born & bred but then pledged his allegience to NYC, very similarly to Tupac. I actually bought a couple of Compilations about Boston Hip Hop but also heard a few songs where Guru proudly represented Boston. I think his allegience was more to NYC but I've literally heard Guru rep & shout out Boston in a few of his songs. Maybe they were collaborations and/or featured tracks but Guru has most definitely shown respect & shouted out Boston. I think it was even with a couple Krumbsnatcha songs, actually. If I'm not mistaken. Guru was proud to rep Both Beantown & NYC.

Appreciate the fact that y'all going back and listening to 90's hip hop. Majority of them was samples from music in the 60's and 70's. Nowadays....like y'all said in the video, majority of trap beats today is inspired by 3 6 Mafia.
The reason when you meet an "old head" and they go crazy about the 90's...the era kind of breakdowns like this with a 20 year gap.
    1. 70's= had the be the best on the instrument you played.
    2. 90's = had to be the best lyricist
    3. 10's = had to create the best vibe
Hope that helps since y'all like beats!!👍🏾👍🏾

He drove his old Chevy pickup truck from Houston to NYC with his turntables, records and clothes with his friend. He was 20 years old at the time. This was before Rap-A-Lot and Suave House Records started. This was in the 80s.

Not every producer is a DJ & not every DJ is a producer. DJ's mix & manipulate vinyl on the turntable like a Turntablist but then producers are just in the Lab 🧪🧫 (studio) using their equipment to conduct or create a Hip Hop beat. Producers use studio equipment to create musical compositions through instruments of sound such as F&L, MPC's & SP1200's but DJ's use their hands & fingers to manipulate the vinyl on Turntables & DJ equipment often through (Scratching). Legendary Dr. Dre is known more so for being a producer & not much of a DJ. DJ Premier is BOTH a producer AND a DJ. He produces his own beats but also manipulates the vinyl as a DJ. You rarely (IF EVER) see Dr. Dre doing this as he makes Music. I think Pete Rock, Alchemist & 9th Wonder occasionally uses elements of DJ (scratching) as well. But still not nearly as much as DJ Premier. Marco Polo & Statik Selektah use scratching in their production too. Apollo Brown usually just uses his production to speak for his talent & creativity. Not a whole lot of DJ scratching there. Evidence & Babu from Dilated People's include elements of scratching in their Music too. DJ Rhettmatic is both a DJ & Producer. The vast majority of producers don't really DJ or use elements of scratching in 2023 but you might find a few here & there. A personal favorite DJ/producer for me would be a guy by the name Confidence. He bangs out GREAT production with elements of both DJing, scratching & producing in the studio. DJ Honda (from Japan) & DJ Noize does the same. Not all DJ's produce & Not all producers DJ anymore. It's becoming a lost Art. DJ Khaled isn't a bad producer by any stretch BUT he's dancing around in videos like "Puffy" used to dance in Bad Boy artist videos in flashy suits. That's not really (by a Historical definition) considered a DJ. Even though he makes palletable & digestible Music in the studio. He's Not Bad.
By the way, if you do a little research, you'll find that there used to be PLENTY of Rappers/Producers/DJ's from both Texas & Massachusetts. Beantown Boston used to be one of the BIGGEST markets for unsigned hype. Boston was often overlooked & underrated in talent. Edo G & REKS are underrated Legends from the Boston area. Termanology is someone who got the spotlight for a while as well. Texas had UGK, Devin the Dude, Geto Boys, Tela, Lil' Keke, Lil' Flip, Mike Jones, Paul Wall & MANY others. DJ Screw was a LEGEND in Houston & all over the Globe for his "Chopped & Screwed" mixtapes before he passed. I believe even Chamillionaire is also from Houston too. Lots of Legends, even in the R&B/Soul arena, such as Beyonce' & Destiny's Child.
