When they talked about the "policy to use the most recent version of the rules", I think they meant the player's options that were updated. The AL rules always said to use the most recent version of every option (like the artificer and several subclasses and races that were printed in more than one book).

It's always a good time to listen to the talk show and your other uploads. Thanks for all the great content! I love the products, made my games and prep so much smoother. I even printed the table with the basic statts per CR for easy reference when preparing or have to improvise.

I've started using the Lazy GM Checklist as a Template for Session in Obsidian. Then I use the RPG Tips GM Organizational Challenge to "organize" my notes. I put metadata on the notes, and then I use the DataView plugin to query and make a campaign dashboard in the Obsidian Canvas.

Very timely reminder of your video/article about running I6 in Shadowdark. I'm about to do the same this weekend with the intent of posting a video of the results some time after.

There is one more way to increase encounter difficulty that I use - and it's to deplete the resources of the party. The easiest way to do this is to run a couple of small encounters before the big encounter. I find this to be very effective. I also think it a good narrative tool because the players will experience the big fight in contrast to the fight leading up to it.

I think that the reference to AL always updating the rules, is related to what happened within 5e, like when species were updated in Monsters of the Multiverse.

I have also become intriqued to run Shadowdark and Ravenloft reading trough your articles on the topic. My group has not played Shadowdark before so I'm a bit hesitant if we should play a lower level game first to get accustomed to the playstyle and rules.

I'm fine with DCs being set for specific tool usages. As you said, DMs can change them and can do so by the book. My issue with tools comes from this rule:
"Tools. [...] If you have proficiency in the skill that's also used with that check, you have advantage on the check too."
They didn’t specify the skills for every tool check, and I worry that my players will end up making every tool check with advantage because it's too easy to justify using a skill in conjunction with a tool.

while i love more monsters most of the time, my method for bosses is multi-intitiative! they go at 20 and 10 and have 1 legendary action for each initiative.

Your statement around 18:20 isn't really true. They're stated compatibility guidance is specifically that you can run 2014 characters using the 2024 rules. That's exactly what the player's handbook suggests doing. It's just that they're telling adventurers league players to update everything to the 2024 rules.

Those tool DCs aren't new. They are just a (small) subset of the ones in Xanathar's Guide. In that book, however, the DCs were described as "Sample DCs".

It feels a lot like compatibility means “buy the new book” when the rubber hits the road.

    • @delax000
      @delax000 9 дней назад

Not to be facetious, but what would you be "compatible with" if you didn't buy the new book?
If the new isn't involved, theres obviously no problem.

I have already gotten into the habit of calling the current revision 5.24, while the rules released in 2014 5.14, though strangely enough it seems like I should call it different because we were using Tasha's, Fizban's & other books from supplemental rules not including 5.24 or unearthed arcana.

49:02 I recently ran waves of Meenlocks, but only gave them 20 HP each. It turned out well, especially when they could take them out with 1 big hit, but there was still that 1 squirrelly meenlock that kept taking pidly amounts and darted around the map

I love the mork borg concept, I don't like it at all interfering with the ability to actually use the book. To explain it a little, the Paizo gamemastery guide is a very clean book by comparison, but it has a slight texture by the end of the page, and that requires more light for me to read it than the rest of the page. For me that is a failure of putting design above readability, so imagine me trying to read Mork Borg style books.

I prefer games without DCs. However, if I'm playing a game with a DC, I prefer those with set DCs. I think having to choose degrees of difficulty challenge is arbitrary and not very functional. With that said, what I would like - instead of what seems to be presented in the tool section - is a set, codified table of difficulties that gives examples on what is the difference between Hard and Very Hard, etcetera. I would like that rather than set DCs on, say, Disguise Kit tests. Tell me what a Normal difficulty Disguise Kit test looks like (DC10). Tell me what a hard difficulty Disguise Kit test looks like (DC15). Etcetera. Let me decide which difficulty this specific test is but guide me.
Also, please, by God, tell me (the new DM) that I shouldn't ask for tests that would be easier than a normal difficulty (DC10). Tell me that it's okay to just let those actions happen.

I personally don't DM a lot of D&D, but I play a lot, and also GM other games. I'm 100% behind you on not asking for unnecessary rolls.
The example given for Disguise Kit (put on makeup? DC 10!?) is an example. If a character is proficient in disguise, then they can certainly "put on makeup", I would not even ask for a roll unless they the player was explicitly angling for a mechanical advantage.
If the player said, I want to put on my best makeup as well as possible so that I can get advantage when seducing that guard, then okay, they can roll, and they only get advantage if they succeed.
Only ask for rolls when success isn't obvious or failure is meaningful! Our characters are heroes, assumed to be more competent than all the normies who stay at home, not bumbling village idiots.

@@TimothyRice-p1r I once played in a GRUPS fantasy game that took place on a planet with a lot of water. I played an peal diver that had been diving for his whole life, but of some reason we almost never came near water. After a long time of playing I finally had the chance to dive, but then I have to make a roll to put the scuba gear on, made a bad roll and failed.

@@TimothyRice-p1r I also DM and I have also made some mistakes during my time as a DM. I think it's more are about learning from mistakes. GURPS is not even a DC system, it's a roll under system, so I don't think it so much about the system but how we use the system.
If someone tries to put on makeup and fails a DC 10 check, we shouldn't make a total fail and say that the makeup is awful, but maybe it's just not as great as it would have been if they have made the check.
