Haha that was fun. Great reaction. There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013). Well done finding the translation for the intro, most people completely miss that. Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc. All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times (plus a couple more in the shows at the Budokan they played early in 2021), the last before those was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.🔥🔥🔥 Did I mention? (YT seems to object to hashtags now) NotACult.
The song is actually called BABYMETAL Death. And the concert is called Legend 1997. The lead singer Su-metal was born in 1997 and this was her 16th birthday concert held in 2013.
Good reaction. You were reading the comments below the video - it was the guitarist you saw smiling who so tragically passed away (Mikio Fujioka R.I.P.) in January 2018 a few days after falling from an observation deck where he had been stargazing.
They say Su-meatal desu, Mometal duse, Yuimetal desu and BABYMETAL desu. Roughly translated desu would be “I am”. Now to make it more metal the crowd says death instead of desu (in most concerts). This is the opening song on their tour this year and I can’t wait to shout BABYMETAL DEATH this September.
This was a blast watching your reaction, thank you. I hope you continue to enjoy more from this fantastic band. The entire concert (Legend 1997) is a rock opera, starting with the consecration of the neckbrace, then a transition song by song from jpop with metal to more and more metal. before this song Su-Metal sings her final song as a jpop idol fronting a metal band, laments her loss to come. the whole show is one of a kind.
Great reaction, thanks! Nothing to see here. Just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!... haha... 😁Religious people can be calm. And, by the way, just in case: not a cult. Now seriously, this is from the concert Legend 1997 - SU-METAL seitansai (SU-METAL 16th birthday party) and took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe event hall in Chiba (Greater Tokyo Area). Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu", "YUIMETAL desu", "MOAMETAL desu", "BABYMETAL desu" "Death death death death death death..." etc Desu (the U is silent so it sounds like the English word death, pretty much means "I am, you are, we are" so they were introducing themselves. This was usually an opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole concert is an allegory about their transition from a J-pop idol group sub-unit into a legit metal band. And this was its necessary final number with the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a metal Goddess. The beat on the intro and the final statue crumbling are homages to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is an tribute to X-Japan's Yoshiki Hayashi. Until next time! 🤘🦊
With the return of BABYMETAL's three-person lineup, BABYMETAL DEATH also returned in April! BABYMETAL DEATH Shin ver made before the revival is also very good. From Japan🦊
They didn't do translations back in this era because they hadn't really started to become well known outside Japan at that stage of their career. These days the voice over at their shows is actually in English with Japanese subtitles since they are much more internationally oriented now. The three girls are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Yuimetal and Moametal (backing vocals and dance). At the time of this performance, Su was 16 and Yui and Moa were 14. This particular performance and the song Babymetal Death tends to require a bit of explanation. The song is the opening track on the first album and opens many of their live performances, and it serves as an introduction for the band. During the song, the harsh vocal voice is spelling out the name of the band "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L!" and then the girls come with "Su-metal desu", "Yuimetal desu", "Moametal desu", which more or less means "I am Su-metal", "I am Yuimetal", "I am Moametal", so they are introducing themselves to the audience. But at the same time, there is also a play on word at work, because when Japanese people say the words "death", it often sounds like "desu" due to the fact that Japanese does not have dental fricatives (sounds that use your teeth) so they have trouble with the "th" sound, leading them to substitute "su" for "th". As a result, they are simultaneously introducing themselves, and saying their names and "death". They stopped performing this song live for a long time after Yuimetal's last performance in 2017. It was revived earlier this year at Babymetal Begins - The Other One with the investiture of Momometal as the permanent third member. Since then, they have opened all the shows on the current world tour with Babymetal Death now that they are a trio again. In regard to this particular performance, which took place on the 21st of December 2013 (the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday), it serves as a celebration of her 16th birthday and formalizing her graduation from Sakura Gakuin and Babymetal becoming an independent act separate from SG. During this performance, the Fox God calls on Suzuka to sacrifice her mortal form and become the champion of the god of metal, transforming into the metal goddess Su-metal in a process of death and rebirth. This song is the moment of her apotheosis. This song and performance are also full of references and homages to Babymetal's biggest influences. The statue in the background which looks kind of like an amalgamation of the Virgin Mary and a Buddha figure that explodes at the end is a reference to the statue of Justice from Metallica's "And Justice For All" tour, while the main riff in Babymetal Death is an homage to Metallica's "One" riff. The neckbrace is an homage to Yoshiki, the drummer and pianist of X Japan, who famously headbanged so much that he did permanent damage to his neck and had to wear a neckbrace to perform. Babymetal have often cited Metallica and X Japan as their two greatest influences, reflecting the metal and visual kei inspirations they draw from.
Su-metal owns the crowd, road to resistance, without saying anything she signaling only with her arms for a wall of death and people do it, also seen her mid song see starts to make circles with her free hand wich mean mosh pit, and people do it right away, so amazing how much power she have over them
This has to be one of the heaviest metal videos I've ever seen. I see from your history, you've been focusing on Asian acts. I would suggest you listen to the band Lovebites from Japan. These ladies may be one of the most talented bands I've seen in a long time. They just released a new live video of their song Hammer of Wrath. You won't regret it!
13:04 I don't think any regular person can pass her by in any way... 🙂 It's only something like gymnasts at the Olympics who get to stand on the top of the world at that age. (unless you see having a child as a big phase/achievement in life she might not do that any time soon)

There's literally 6 different words repeated throughout the entire song, and they're ALL spoken in English. If you can't understand English, then you need to go back to school, kid. Unbelievable.
Great reaction and trust me, when they brought the song back earlier this year as the opener it still goes as hard (and may damage your vocal cords, chanting “death” lol). As other have said, this was the final point for the transformation of jpop idol Suzuka to become metal goddess Su-metal after she got sacrificed to the fox god. #seriouslynotacult 😂🤘🔥🦊

Legend 1997 concert was performed in 2013 for Queen SU_METAL's 16th birthday. She was born in Hiroshima on December, 20 1997.
