Why Did Reuben Split Up?

- I had a sit down with Jamie Lenman and asked him why Reuben split up and didn't even do a farewell tour. I particularly enjoyed him calling me a bastard at the end.

'The internet does that thing where it makes a whisper sound like a roar' might be the most effective pithy encapsulation of the social media age I've heard.
Bang on, innit? Lots of noisy bastards out there over things much less worthy of being "whispered" about...
Understand Jamie's reasoning - they'll still be my favourite band ever though. They just captured a sound and a feeling that made for really genuine music, think that's why we all connected so much to it.
what I liked about reuben was that he had such good tonal quality and such a unique kind of sound that it wasnt too heavy nor too soft. it was available and yet wasn't.
I bet the festival was 2000 Trees. I remember being really excited to actually see Reuben live and they dropped out the weekend before.
You also forget that Reuben gained a following after their split with the younger kids...I never stopped playing them in my music industry classes to young people. Passing on the art
I'm 14, and I discovered Reuben by a RUclips comment on a helmet drum cover. I searched them up cuz I was curious. I was not disappointed
@@Elethehuman People rarely are! Enjoy!
@@SKMusic1985 I've been listening to them for like a year already
Saw them support Billy Talent many years ago and they were amazing. Had never heard of them before, left the gig with their demo album and been a fan of theirs and followed Jamie ever since.
Me too. Manchester! I only went for Reuben 😂
When I saw Reuben live in Derby in 2002 - 2003 they were supporting Kinesis. I've always remembered how after the gig some of the guys from Kinesis were outside the venue and I and my friends got a few minutes to talk to them and they were talking about how being in a band isn't all it's cracked up to be. They didn't seem like they were happy with the grind. Sounds a bit like what Jamie was talking about here.
I loved and still love Reuben. I watch the DVDs and listen to the music just as much as when they were together. Jamie Lenman's solo stuff is pretty good, but there was a levelling out that happened with Reuben which Lenman's solo stuff put out separated. The heavy and the light was always co-existing and battling off against each other. If Reuben did a one-off tour today in bigger venues than they think would fill up, they'd sell them out entirely. Reuben are one of those bands I think, 'Once a fan, always a fan' totally applies to, and there can only be more people finding their music today. I don't think a band like Reuben existed before them, or since, which is sad because I'd love to find that band and support them as much as I did Reuben. I think my heart fell out of supporting music when they split up.
Honest explanation of Jamie, love it. I only started listening at the beginning of 2009, so my support was too late. Then again, being from the Netherlands it wasn't really easy anyway to go to a Reuben-show. Like ever. Did buy all the albums, even have Racecar on vinyl and CD. Still a shame they broke up, but hearing Jamie's explanation very understandable.
Seems to me the frustration of never really making it drove them apart.
If you have been in bands to the level of this kind of intensity and you know what it does to you, then it doesn’t need explaining.
I think it was 2000 Trees!
I think you're right, I worked that festival last year and all the chat, even 6 years later or whatever, is about Reuben.
Andrew B Yepp, you're correct. They have a campsite called Camp Reuben, and the organiser is a huuuuge fan. And when he played as Jamie Lenman this year, he commented on 2000trees wanting him to play for years and years.
genuinely miss this band. They where my little piece of normality in an otherwise batt shit crazy world . "probably sound like a crazy guy" whirlwind melody thrown into articulated aggression. It mimicked for me "metaphorically" a lot of my life. turning thirty in a matter of weeks..... massive reuben shaped hole missing from me I guess.
At least Jamie continues recording good music. We haven’t lost them completely.
Think he's right about the "three albums and fuck off" thing, case in point being Biffy Clyro. Still devastated me when they broke up, but at least we have his solo stuff which absolutely feels like an extension of the band. And just to praise myself, I was at the shows. At least I was for both times you came to Belfast. Praise be!
why Biffy?
I agree with that man :D
***** Yeah they gained popularity but they haven't come anywhere close to the ingenuity and rawness of the first three albums with any of their later ones. It saddens me greatly.
they're still awesome, you can't keep making the same albums.....
Quite true, although I'm not sure I'd say awesome. The first three albums were all killer no filler, raw and inventive. The latest whilst I enjoy them (bar the fucking Captain, what a crock) there's a bit more 'meh' in there and rather than being Biffy the uncategorisable they are now quite a bit more generic.
Sadly I was only 10 when they split up, so i coudn't have gone to any gigs, but i remember seeing "Freddy Krueger" on MTV 2 with my bro and I thought "Oh yeah this is cool rock music" and then last year I heard the song again and finally found Reuben. So I was sad when i learnt i'd never see them live. But this explanation i think provides closure for any fans that were simply too late.
Nice to hear it from the Jamie mouth.
I miss this band a great deal and regret that I only got to see them once. Still though I hold the memory of Jamie and Frank singing Alpha signal three at the Wedge in Pompy along with the various memories that go with every other song.
A real life shaping band.
When they were relatively new I remember booking a cheap hotel and traveling to a pub in Doncaster to see them .. They were a support act for another band.. There were literally 5 people dancing to them (that included me and eddy) really lovely guys and fantastic music .. You could hear they put their all into it .. Glad I got to see them .. Was like my own private gig lol
You are absofuckingluteltly welcome in regards to the ticket sales, CDs, T-shirts and general internet noise et al, Mr Lenmam! They were good times and they're great memories... Onwards and upwards, Sir, Muscle Memory's a beast!
I only got into Reuben after they split up and I only heard about them through the internet. Had I known about them sooner you could bet your arse I would have been at the shows.
I do own physical copies of all their albums as a kind of mark of respect. It's a shame they won't be doing another tour but I guess thems the breaks.
Im basically in the same boat
Reuben was alright, yeah.
Its weird tho cus my name is Reuben
The festival in question was the AWESOME, 2000 Trees.
He was awesome when he played it last year, especially when he burst into "No one wins the war"
Love Reuben. Only caught on pretty much as soon as they split
I was lucky. Heard Zane lowe interviewing Jamie on radio 1 and then playing 'keep it to yourself' I was a chef at the time and the kitchen absolutely erupted !!!
These interviews are class. Where’s your Biffy one? Seems to have disappeared off youtube.
"...you bastard"
"We didn't put special clothes on" Fucking did for this interview!
he dresses like that all the time :L
A band with such chemistry doesn't just lose interest after 3 albums. Esepcially when creatively they'd reached a point at which they were constantly evolving and had just released their most experimental album yet, meaning that they could practically do anything they want with their sound from then on. Had Reuben keep going, their music would have kept getting better and better is for sure.
Following Jamie's lyrics and point of view back then, I feel the urge to stop the Reuben train came off for diferrent reasons. The pressure of running their own record company, the pressure of being an underground band for more than 10 years and having a daily job just to afford being in a band is more than enough to get the band parting ways. It caused frustration and it wore them off.
But even that's a thing to admire of them. Even when they could, they never tried to fit in, they always did their thing and when they just couldn't do it anymore, it was time to say goodbye.
Nevertheless, the songs will always be there and the mark of an outstanding band has been made. And those of you who have memories of Reuben and experienced them at their prime, you were at the right place, the right time and no words can express my envy and appreciation.
VavourasRocksurSocks i agree with all of this. i hopped onboard the reuben train a bit before in nothing we trust, but living in the US i never had the chance to catch a gig. i think if they woulda taken a break for a few years and jumped back into it, they would still be playing today.
I'm so lucky I got to see them, had know idea what I was watching at 14 years old
Reuben were my favourite band, so gutted they split up.
Being in the US, I never had a chance to see them live, but I followed them from Racecar..on and really fucking miss those dudes playing together
Was crushed when they split up and would still to this day travel any where in the country if they did a one off gig. He's right about the energy, they where on a whole different level only band that comes close is mongol horde, and always had a laugh on stage, once met Jamie in the toilets of Manchester academy and he was wearing a hospital gown!
Come back!!!!
been looking to find out the real reason why Reuben split up, finally found it! Love Lenman's new stuff but hell it would amazing to see the Reuben boys back together again!
I come back to this video every so often to remind me of the closure that was given to me as a birthday present (13th May)
Positive Thinking: My biggest wish is that Jamie feels like writing for a diary (Reuben lyrics) and the trio feels it is worth playing, and coming together for, a fourth album will be received guys.
Personal Regrets: Worth mentioning there was a 2008 gig I was invited to and decided not to go due to work which turned out to be one of the last gigs, had I known,.....I thought I would see them next time, REGRETS!!!!
lethal band. love them and inme.. underrated as fuck.
one day hopefully they gig again
It's interesting how he says "by the end I couldn't even be in the same room as the other two" but on the initial email that was send out to the Reuben mailing list it said that they were all on good terms and it was not a sour breakup. I wonder if they were starting to hate each other towards the end - although I really hope not!
I bought every one of Reuben's albums, and have endeavoured to share their music with everyone I've met who I've felt appreciates decent music.
Jamie, either settle your differences and get back together with the other guys, or do something else with some other people you can stay in a room with...
It's a great shame that we haven't heard anything from you for so long.
We're all still waiting...
Rich Bristow you havent heard muscle memory? hes even done some reuben tunes at the gigs.
aye, you sounded like a committed fan with all your encouraging words to begin with, then your message went a bit naive and passive-aggressive, considering if you'd Googled Jamie's name in the past few years prior to making this comment you'd know he's an active, touring, record-making musician, you silly sausage ;)
I wonder if the festival was 2k Trees. I actually went to the second one purely because Reuben was supposed to be playing it. They split up like a week before the festival. Was so pissed off. Got to see Ghost of a Thousand though, so paid off in the end.
K...agora que descobri essa banda.
we love you jamie ^^ !!!!!!!
The one thing that annoys me about Jamie is how he's dress to the 9s which I love yet has a crappy digital watch on, No mechanical time piece!
I only discovered Reuben after they'd split. I'd easily pay $100 to get a chance to see them.
Why does he dress like a victorian gentleman now
Cause he's going to a swimming pool
Ah Nah man, if I'd been in the loop at all I would've gone to see them. So shocked when I heard they split. Thought they'd be around forever.
First time seeing Jamie since the videos. Very different from the kid with swaths of hair around his face. Cool though. Properly laughed at the end.
I absolutely loved Reuben as a kid but if I listen now it’s only Alpha signal 7, Wooden boy, Let’s stop hanging out and Miffy in Auschwitz
has he turned into Charles Bronson now?!?!?
Hahahhahaha It's probably about 5 people typing it again and again
He went on to be a prize fighter right?
Reckon they'll be back
Still waiting..
