When you're sick and having a trip down youtube memory lane. This was the very first EYK video I ever watched way way way way WAY back in the day. Fun, cute, quirky, living in another country fun, exploring the culture. I would have never thought this channel would grow so huge. Way to go guys, thanks for helping me Build My Ladder and stay positive even when I feel like shit.
Had an enormous amount of down time at work tonight and ended up going back to the very beginning and watching all of the videos I had not yet watched... along with some old favorites that I have watched MANY times over. Hard to believe how far things have come, even in the last 6 years that I've been watching!
I love the way the format has changed over the years. I think most of us who have followed the channel for a while have kind of adapted with you guys as you have changed things. It's fun to look back at the different styles of videos you've done! :)
This Homeplus is in Bucheon City near the Sopooong Mall/bus terminal. The entire alcohol section is big; all types of rum, vodka, soju, traditional korean drink, a wine section (plus wine fridge), and lots of beer. Off the top of my head, I can remember seeing: moosehead, asahi, sappora, a beer with a panda on it. I think it's a Chinese beer.
When they played the advertisement box and said it was for a fart product, i thought it sounded more like mosquitoes or any bug or insect, and that's what the product was for
I have never commented before.. but I came across this video in 2008 when I was learning about countries in Asia that have online Tesco shopping at subway stations. Needless to say I was hooked ever since and have seen every single video.. 🤓 I know Martina's love for Japan began when she was a child .. Happy they are there now :) but It's fun to watch old ones still! It makes me wish I documented parts of my life to reflect on how much has grown!!! :)
@ozaki1 Yes, we know that. However, when you're in Korea for 2 days and need to buy shampoo and no one speaks English, sometimes you have to get creative. Now we can read Korean with no problem.
oh, I laughed so hard when I saw the different free items attached to the coffee! ahahahaha. Of course, the salad spinner is critical when you make coffee!
This is such a long time ago but it shows the expectations of people when they travel to other countries :) I really liked this, this is what happened to me when I went to mexico after 9 years lol
I am Malaysian but hover around Singapore/Malaysia a lot and tend to find supermarkets/department stores open during public holidays and til late at night. When I came to study in UK, I got such a culture shock because places close here around 5-6pm and NOTHING gets done during the weekends or public holidays. My expectations of service has been drastically lowered.
I really do agree that they don't have numbers on pillar. that would be very good way to give directions to consumers, but for daily consumers.. they just know the exit, which is kinda near the entrance.
Yea, Homeplus does carry much more selection than Emart at better prices and extra service; those little packs taped on. I was in Changwon my 1st year and found Homeplus to beat the pants off of Emart. The problem is during my 2nd assignment to Korea is none of this shopping is to be found in Gangwon-do like in all the other provinces. Where is this Homeplus? How the import beer selection in that Homeplus?
you guys are awesome in trying to show more about Korea!! not many people know about Korea as well as they do about some other asian countries so I'm glad that you guys like Korea!!
the groceries store looks pretty normal in all asian countries,,almost all asian countries has little food court in front of the stores,,and the promotion things are common as well,,
THAT'S TESCO I thought the signs looked familiar, I looked it up online and Home plus is owned by Tesco! Now Korea looks homely, the fact the supermarket is similar is comforting.
@simonandmartina That's great. I know so many foreigners think that they don't need to learn the language because they don't encounter the situation they MUST know Korean usually.
Some one gave you advice that was true (and still is true for small towns) five to seven years ago. Gotta luv the serbeuseu! [a Konglish use of service] Oh, how I love to shop and snack at Homeplus, Lottemart, or E-mart. They give you their sales-pitch (which I mostly don't understand) you get the sample; dumpling, fried pork, tofu with chopped onions and soy sauce. then just smile and say thanks. it's awesome.
I feel you, guys. Upon moving to Korea I also packed bottles of hair products, only so that later I couldn't wait to finish them and at last embark on a journey of trying Korean hair products xD
@JosKiddin japanese and korean are syllabaries. chinese is symbol oriented and is competely different than the japanee and korean writing system. for japanese except for 2 letters every letter is a syllabary with consonant+vowel, but korean has individual letter for all vowels and consonants
Homeplus keeps me sane, which is scary when I see the Special K with socks attached, or when I do a happy dance over finding something new... hmm I think maybe I do need to venture over to the new store, because I'm thinking my nearby location is looking pretty pathetic. And I'm mad that they gave up on Jif after a month and haven't had the wholewheat pasta lately.
Wow! You've come a long way guys 😅 Love your channel. Hubby and I came for the content and stayed for the laughs. Going back to the beginning freaks me out though 😝😂
Yep, just go to Seoul for your Western fix. Out in the country, it's basics like water, potatoes, rice, tissue, etc. Real coffee can be tricky outside major cities as I don't like the instant coffee. Gmarket was my favorite most useful shopping while in the countryside where you don't have modern facilities. That store is very large. The big city is where the action, eating, culture, arts, and shopping is to be had. I'd advise you to go teach in the city if single. My mistake to go rural.
@Serenitypinkity beginning consonant + vowel + bottom consonant = one complete letter. beginning consonant + vowel still makes up a letter, and you need at least both of them to make a letter
while i was in China, I didnt have a problem finding shampoo and conditioner brands i was familiar with but they didn't work with my hair for some reason
That happened to me like 10 years ago when I moved to Korea I wasted few hundreds dollar on extra baggage with all daily stuff that I thought can only be find in USA.
Yes, I wondered what was the very first gear you guys had to record this video and you guys adorable!! I've been binged to your video to find the short footage of simon doing "can I buy you drink" meme hahha..let me know that I am in the correct era of your video.
It looks a lot like Mexican supermarket Soriana, they have the food court, and the lobsters (they also have fish ._.) and the weird offers that make no sense, and the organization of the store in general, I mean even things are placed in similar places... is fun to see the similarities between Korea and my country , Mexico :'D
Oh my god! The hair of Martina are so long (compare at today). It's funny to see her like that. ^^ She's so cute, like now. *^^* Ha ha ha! (In french : Ho ho ho!)
Oh, I was joking. xD Heechul was playing video games when Martin and Simona... (that's the name I've given them since I always get their names confused... ) ... What was I saying?
10000 won is about $8-1$0 Canadian and US dollars now. It's not much of a difference. So even if you convert Canadian to US dollars it's about the same.
You are sooooooooooo like dutch people going on vacation :' we need to stuff our car up full of things you can't buy in another country, because we just can't do without our dutch products' I love you guys anyway.....
I got my glasses at a Home Plus! they were 15,000 won...7,000 for the frames, and 8,000 for an eye exam and the lenses...that's right...15,000 won for prescription glasses..I will now be going to Korea for all my eyesight needs xD
Lol, I saw people commenting on the kid that rode the cart at 2:05 and was like "I must see what's so special!". After seeing it all i can tell is... You people have missed something in your childhood, I did that all the time and mom nagging at me didn't stop me from it. xD

Simon and Martina should do a video reaction to this! XD
woow...Simon 5 years ago really look like a teacher....
Had an enormous amount of down time at work tonight and ended up going back to the very beginning and watching all of the videos I had not yet watched... along with some old favorites that I have watched MANY times over. Hard to believe how far things have come, even in the last 6 years that I've been watching!
Whoooooa this video is sooooo different than what we do now. Wow!
I love the way the format has changed over the years. I think most of us who have followed the channel for a while have kind of adapted with you guys as you have changed things. It's fun to look back at the different styles of videos you've done! :)
sometimes I go back and watch these old videos. It feels nostalgic from my own study abroad

Is 2 am right now, and currently watching your old videos. Can't believe this was from 2008.
Thank you to the person who made the Spanish subtitles! We really appreciate the help!
Sweet! Dutch subtitles are now up as well! Shazaam!
Thank you sweet person who did that! Good at English but with the high dose of morphine I am on I get stuck somedays! #possibleEDS #lotsofpain
When they played the advertisement box and said it was for a fart product, i thought it sounded more like mosquitoes or any bug or insect, and that's what the product was for
It's like watching an old home video! I love it!
I have never commented before.. but I came across this video in 2008 when I was learning about countries in Asia that have online Tesco shopping at subway stations. I remember watching this video few years ago, you only had few subscribers. Now look how big you guys are in RUclips.
This old video has helped me haha. Time to go to Home Plus for the first time today!
Homeplus is actually owned by a British supermarket called 'Tesco' which is the biggest supermarket chain in the UK too :)
wow really? i never thought our tescos would own something in korea
I love that bonus that taped with the product! I'll buy it for sure, the biggest one-,-
This is such a long time ago but it shows the expectations of people when they travel to other countries :) I really liked this, this is what happened to me when I went to mexico after 9 years lol
im from the usa and in new england it common to have either a food court or an area where you can order food
I am Malaysian but hover around Singapore/Malaysia a lot and tend to find supermarkets/department stores open during public holidays and til late at night. I still love this video..Arghhh nostalgia overload
I really do agree that they don't have numbers on pillar. that would be very good way to give directions to consumers, but for daily consumers.. they just know the exit, which is kinda near the entrance.
It's really good to see foreigners enjoying their stay in korea. Thank you ^^
It's Simon and Martina as a fetus! :D
It's so strange seeing Martina without makeup and in a plain tshirt and jeans.
Looks lovely either way! :)
i love martinas look this way!
This reminds me of the Ranch Markets we have here at home!

you guys are awesome in trying to show more about Korea!! not many people know about Korea as well as they do about some other asian countries so I'm glad that you guys like Korea!!
Looks like the T&T grocery stores you can find everywhere in Toronto :D
the groceries store looks pretty normal in all asian countries,,almost all asian countries has little food court in front of the stores,,and the promotion things are common as well,,

We have home plus in England its called tesco home plus or just tesco because homeplus is english i looked on wikipedia :)
@JosKiddin japanese and korean are syllabaries. chinese is symbol oriented and is competely different than the japanee and korean writing system. for japanese except for 2 letters every letter is a syllabary with consonant+vowel, but korean has individual letter for all vowels and consonants
I honestly just watched that because I love seeing Martina with normal hair. XD But the coffee packets are awesome!
Homeplus keeps me sane, which is scary when I see the Special K with socks attached, or when I do a happy dance over finding something new... hmm I think maybe I do need to venture over to the new store, because I'm thinking my nearby location is looking pretty pathetic. And I'm mad that they gave up on Jif after a month and haven't had the wholewheat pasta lately.
.....that was a farting noise?.....I thought that it was the sound of bees.....I thought that it was for allergy stuff XD
@lolllipopmania lol that's not fart spray. It's spray that kills mosquitos and the first sound is mosquito sound.
Martina looks like a babe here! So cute haha
Wow! You've come a long way guys 😅 Love your channel. Hubby and I came for the content and stayed for the laughs. Going back to the beginning freaks me out though 😝😂
Binge watching all ur vedios bin quarantine
woa I found hidden gems .... 10 years old video
@fuzzy15946 well homeplus, emart of usual Korean big markets are 4-5 stories tall. so it's like x5 of tnt
Omo! Is that really Heechul?
Sam's Club samples are all over the place, it's crazy trying to find them.
lol the samples part COMPLETELY pwns stores like Costco and others that do things like that :D
Love the motion sensor box! :D
It's a Subsidiary/part owned by TESCO PLC and Samsung, so I was delighted to discover British-made stuff on the shelves...but also like "WTF?"

I love Home Plus! My husband gets so mad every time I ask if he can take me to Home Plus. Perhaps it's because I ask everyday?
That happened to me like 10 years ago when I moved to Korea I wasted few hundreds dollar on extra baggage with all daily stuff that I thought can only be find in USA.
Was cute? I think she's still pretty adorable
240p and this is already hilarious!! oh my god, you just got a brand new subscriber, Simon and Martina, Regards From Bali
Oh wow! This is such an old video, though! Our style is soooo very different now!
Yes, I wondered what was the very first gear you guys had to record this video and you guys adorable!! I've been binged to your video to find the short footage of simon doing "can I buy you drink" meme hahha..let me know that I am in the correct era of your video.
2:05 man that guy is pushing his trolley fast! He floored that isle in less than 2 seconds!
"this puts SAMs Club to shame" lol ! So funny , haha .
Love this video but the whiskey claw machine is still my favorite.
martina looks more beautiful and simply charming in this video :)
"This puts Sam's to shame," that cracked me up.
The camera graphics 😝 but look at you guys now. 😮
JEEZ I wanna go to a Korean Home Plus and try every single sample *___* I'd be in heaven...

10000 won is about $8-1$0 Canadian and US dollars now. It's not much of a difference. So even if you convert Canadian to US dollars it's about the same.
omfg that was actually heechul?
If u live by an H-Mart (a korean supermarket all over the U.S.) , u can experience similar things like samples every 2 ft. lol
the coffee comparison was fucking hilarious.
Is it that busy all the time
that was me 3 years ago, i was so in luv with jpop then koreans got the best of me XD
You are sooooooooooo like dutch people going on vacation :' we need to stuff our car up full of things you can't buy in another country, because we just can't do without our dutch products' I love you guys anyway.....
thumbs up for that kid riding the cart at 2:05 :) haha
Wait... so 1000 won is basically 1 USD?
I got my glasses at a Home Plus! they were 15,000 won...7,000 for the frames, and 8,000 for an eye exam and the lenses...that's right...15,000 won for prescription glasses..I will now be going to Korea for all my eyesight needs xD
lol xP that wasnt fart...that was an insect sound ..and the products were these smelly thingys that make insects stay away
Martina looks so pretty! ^_^ (Not that she doesn't always)
Lol, I saw people commenting on the kid that rode the cart at 2:05 and was like "I must see what's so special!". After seeing it all i can tell is... You people have missed something in your childhood, I did that all the time and mom nagging at me didn't stop me from it. xD
@alexisannquirk Because Korea is 30 years behind the times compared to Japan.
On a quest to discover "What's on the bottle”XD
Who here is watching this in 2017?
nah, who's watching this in 2021
Im so glad that i've at least been the twice. :D i found everything i wanted there....
