I think using heat to reflow is only good for getting data off a PS3 that isn't worth repairing. The harddrive on the system is encrypted and reflowing should keep it working long enough to get the data off the console

I remembered putting a FAT PS3 in an entertainment desk to play FFX. After about an hour it shut down and it had that YLOD after that. Called Sony up and paid about $100 for them to get the PS3 to them, fix it and sent it back to me in about a week. That was about 2012.
These days PS3 are super cheap that many times I get a YLOD PS3 for about $10 each so I got 12 for a discounted $100. From the 8 that I tried 6 of them worked using the heat gun going around the CPU and GPU area for 3 minutes. I tested it a few months later and it still works.
This is just for fun and learning. I was told the proper way to fix this YLOD is to use a multi-meter to check which is the problem chip and replace that. I don't have that patience or currently have that skillset so can't go that route.

  • @NSHG

Wait until you find out there's people who still reflow 360s. I know this way too well, since I've had to stock on Jasper and revised Xenons because every chump and their mom thought it was a good idea to blast their GPUs (and sometimes I'd find the CPUs caked in flux too!) with some Leroy-Merlin/Home-Depot/Mom und Pops Storen heatgun at 300 degrees.
Worst was when some idiot insisted for a reflow when I clearly told him IT WOULDN'T LAST AS FAR AS A MINUTE. He was a firm believer on reflows, until I showed him that his own method had failed him. Thankfully his board was a 2007 Falcon. Had him pay twice the price of a Jasper mobo just because he was stubborn, and to learn a lesson on wasting people's time with a reflow.

@@ConsoleKingRepair Yeah, most people in the town I live would very much dump a ton into reflowing/reballing chips that are well known to fail. I had someone come thru my repair service with a G04 phat (90/65) claiming he spent a whole fortune (forgot how much, I think somewhere around the 400-450RON mark - that's quite a load of money in Romanian currency) on a reball only for it to fail in the span of ~ a week. 3034/4412 before, 3034/4412 again.
I only did a quick reflow to get his saves off and transferred them onto a pristine CECHL04 I had for sale. Charged him for the price of the console I transferred his whole stuff to (350RON since it was a fully clear and untouched SYSCON log unit!)and kept his G04 for spare tantalums to fix 65s - I usually had 1002/1001s on them 65s so it only made sense that I stockpile my own reliable tantalums than order cheap Ali bullshit.

I was told that if you use the oven for the motherboard or gpu you should not use that oven to cook food again. That is the reason why I went to a Goodwill and got a cheap toaster oven for $10 to try it out a few times for curiosity 😀.
