I owned a VW. When I finally sold it, I swore I’d never buy another VW. Not even the new Tiguan. They are beautiful cars. But ownership is not sustainable
Sloppy journalism and invalid comparison. You tested the XS Corolla Cross, not the XR. Right now they're some R170 000 cheaper than the Seltos diesel ES+ and T-Cross 1.0 Tsi R-line. No comparison. Even the top range XR with all the bells and whistles is some R100 000 cheaper than the other two.
Agreed, the overall review was very poor. Additionally, i think its critically important to have a visual guide on screen to which car you are reviewing. Things can get complicated and confusing when switching between cars all the time. There should also be a personal score from each segment with a scorecard at the end. Cars. Price given is of Corolla XR, but model reviewed is the Xs spec which is quite a bit cheaper than Xr. Xr has extra safety spec which might have made a difference to overall result

As a driving enthusiast, I would also pick the T-Cross. But, I know I'm in the minority. If I was objective, I would add the following before recommending the VW. 1) The VW is actually a category lower than the other 2 cars and hence relatively expensive 2) VW is smaller and has a less commanding driving position that makes SUV's so popular. 3) I love the DSG, but regular folk probably won't like the pull off experience (laggy and rough). 4) I'm not sure about SA, but in Auz the after sales service for VW is shocking. It seems to be an organisational arrogance that comes from Germany. My wife has the 2l petrol Seltos and she is over the moon with it, and prefers the Seltos over the T-Cross. I'm not a Toyota fan, but in Auz the Yaris Cross (actual T-Cross rival) and Corolla Cross are top selling models, so they must have some redeeming features. (Resale value, reputation, reliability? & dealer network).
Definitely the Corolla Cross for me... Built locally, so parts shouldn't be an issue and in the times we currently live, it's got the cheapest fuel tank to fill up (less frequently).

Back in the early 2000's, Vw had a strong diesel motor in their small hatchbacks creating 96kw with 310nm of torque mated to a 6 speed manual.. 20 years on, and cars still don't produce that power output. Just my opinion, but I don't see much improvement, especially with those price tags.. if anything, they've gone backwards.

@blxcklee haha facts And I'm willing to bet those old polo diesels with still go on and outlast these cars. 30 years later and the polo diesel drive would have had reliable personal transportation and approx. 250 car installment free months. That's probably the reason they won't make proper cars anymore, it's not sustainable for OEMs and banks. They sure do their best to persuade us to buy thus new trash by making oem parts crazy expensive. Ok, I digress. Got carried away there
Out of the 3... My choice will be the seltos, solely because of the torque converter gearbox The t cross would have been my pick, but I will never be at ease with the dq 200 dry dct. The cross is next on my list as it also does everything quite well for the price, but loses points due to that drony cvt. (Note it has a e-cvt which is way more reliable than a conventional cvt)
Toyota Corolla Cross GR Hybrid. That Kia is exorbitantly priced, 599k for a 1.5, 85kw diesel? The T-Cross is just a Polo on stilts and has no leather seats. Leather seats cleans easily. Klaar. Japan for the win.

Should rather be the T-Roc instead of the T-Cross. The T-Cross is from a segment below so the value argument goes completely out of the window. Also, you're driving the Corolla Cross XS, not the better-equipped XR. Even the XS hybrid is much cheaper than the Seltos and the equivalently specced T-Roc. The T Cross is from a segment below and at similar pricing offers much less value. Important family considerations - lack of vents and charging ports at rear. It's interesting how VW fits posh tech and steering wheel but the rest of the plastics are terribly cheap looking and feeling. Because it is smaller, it will also drive a bit sportier in comparison.
