The family and I took our Tiggo 8 Pro max AWD down to a remote game farm last weekend. If I had known beforehand, I wouldn't have taken it coz the road was non existent after the major rains. 40km of dirt road of which the last 10km was a combination of deep mud, semi flooded low level bridges and a steep rocky mountain pass with some serious axle twisters. Unfortunately when we got to that point we were committed so no turning back. Let's just say my heavily modified Fortuner 4x4 would have been impressed. I took it really slow and she performed like a dream. The ground clearance was amazing. The Off Road mode worked well for what it is. The Tiggo 8 is a softroader and wasn't designed for that kind of abuse but it did it with a smile. Highway driving is very comfy and the power is insane. Kids love the back seats too. So far I'm very impressed.
What a great story, thank you for sharing! And if you had been in the FWD Sportage or Tiguan, you would have been totally stuck. Even though it's the most affordable car here, the Tiggo is the only one with AWD which I think, depending on your needs, is very useful in South Africa.
@CiroDeSiena I drove the front wheel drive and found the 2.0l exec engine to be a bit too powerful. Put your foot down and it will spin the wheels without blinking an eyelid. I also didn't like the steering torque on the FWD when accelerating hard out of corners. Perhaps the 1.6l would be a better option for that? However its not a show stopper as both FWD models are much cheaper than the AWD. The FWD is also better on fuel consumption so it has its place. Disclaimer: I haven't driven either of the other two vehicles in the video so I cannot comment on those. Nice video, thanks.

@@MohsinWadee Yes, they are. And they are are non turbo petrols. I travel quite a bit, and had free services up to 195 000 km though before replacing with another one
@@MohsinWadee They are actually not. They are running with compression ratios of 14.0:1 - burning ultra lean and efficient with homogenous combustion. Their "Right-sizing" approach with the 3.3 diesel has resulted in one of the most efficient diesel engines ever produced
Not to mention their skyactive-x supercharged petrol engines that can run at a compression ratio of close to 16:1 resulting in diesel combustion with petrol as a fuel. Mazda are true masters of the Internal combustion engine. Slapping a big turbo on a basic engine like most other manufactures is lazy, crude and inefficient
Loved this video. I am looking in this segment as my 2019 Kuga ST line is nearing the end of its motorplan at the end of this year. It only has about 47k kms and I have been trying to decide on whether to keep it and extend the plan or buy something new. I really liked the previous Tiguan in the 2.0l R-line spec but the current model is just ridiculously priced. You could probably get a low mileage Porsche Cayenne with plan from Porsche for a fully loaded Tiguan 2.0l. I need to test drive this 8 pro max (sounds like an iPhone).
Thanks kindly, we're really glad it helped you and you enjoyed it. The previous generation Tiguan was indeed a great car and won it's category in our #CarsAwards twice in a row. Let us know how your car shopping goes!
The biggest problem with kia and VW is they take out half the features for our market and then completely over price their vehicles. Also having talked to some body shops and currently owing a kia the cherry is by far the most affordable to fix after a accident, and its easier to get parts than kia.
Okay let’s all go get a cherry🤓🙏🤣 Awesome sum up Cirro Personally I love fuel economy though and I believe that Kia will really deliver 🙆🏾♂️🫠🤷🏾♂️ The Chinese have really come in hard shame putting pressure on these other offerings 🫢
The Chinese are clever in limiting you to 3 trims and all they have to worry about is the different colour. Optional extras should be for like special items not everyday things. I think Ciro needs to get a different pram to test.
i guess i got the bad chery tiggo 8 pro max.. the seats got torn within a year.. and engine light comes on most of the time especially when you full throttle trying to overtake.. yesterday I opened the sunroof, then it started shaking and making weird noses. Thanks Ciro, great review. Not a fan of Chinese cars at all. However, eventhough much more expensive, all three these cars have a better interior than the new BMWX3. Cant wait for you to do that review.
Kia is selling the SA consumer a 1.6 L Turbo Diesel 4 cylinder that pushes out 100kw 320nm for 800k. This is 2024, those figures are great for a diesel hatchback during 2006. Diabolical work Kia. I expect tomfoolery from Volkswagen and they neve disappoint given this 1.4L turbo engine and optional extra syndrome, the price is just too exorbitant for what a Tiguan offers. The Chery is the bang for buck deal. It's not perfect and it's not a hard off-roader and it doesn't claim to be. It's just value.

Lol you wish. We have one and the Chery Tiggo 8 is a way better car than our Rav. My friends Tiggo 8 drives quieter, smoother, has more power, uses less fuel, has better build and material quality. There's nothing competitive about the Rav4.
@SDav21 nothing more wrong with a Chery than with any of the other 2, but the toy factor or bling factor, or PlayStation factor is a lot more evident and by far the main character of the product. The Chery is the biggest toy of the 3 and therefore if used on a daily basis will loose its wow factor the quickest just like most toys if used daily. The Tiguan will keep its owner happy the longest then the Kia and then the Chery especially if they are used daily. I just bought a water pump for my 1999 Toyota Rav4 @ Goldwagen for R620, Toyota still stock it @ R3900 and I reckon a cheap pirate part will be available for R450. Try that on your 26 year old Chery in 26 years time, try it on your 5 year old Chery.
@@peetjvdm You clearly haven't driven a Chery. My friends have theirs for almost 2 years and it surprises daily unlike the boring and dull Tiguan which owners won't care about a day after owning it. The Tiguan will keep the owner happy with free coffees at the dealership while they sort out 1.4 tsi engine issues and dsg mechatronics. The Chinese are masters at production and making high quality after market parts. So what makes you think they won't be producing parts for it. Haha. Besides, how many people keep cars for 20 years any way. Very few. And for those that do, there will be plenty parts. Your anti China stance is outdated and boring....
@SDav21 if I stayed in China, Chery would have been my first choice, staying in South Africa, sorry it is a no no for me. Local is lekker, not because I have something against any Chinese brands or think they're rubbish but mainly because the local factories keep food on the table for many households in sunny South Africa. If Toyota, VW, Ford, Nissan, MB, BMW pull their plants out of South Africa do you think the Chinese will provide for the thousands of households that will be affected by that. Sorry but give me local, no matter the price.
@@peetjvdm The Chinese will set up factories here when the greedy legacy automakers start losing out due to their unreasonably high prices. Cars like the Ranger, X3, C Class, Corolla Cross, Hilux etc are all produced locally yet they aren't any cheaper than it is overseas. We see zero benefit as consumers. It's pure greed. So I'm glad the Chinese are here with their normal prices to knock sense into everyone. And then, for example, Toyota still has the audacity to sell us a stripped down version of the Corolla Cross which isn't close to what they get overseas. In Australia the Corolla Cross has the new 2 litre engine and the hybrid isn't the old 1.8 based hybrid we get but the 2 litre one. And while they get full digital dials, bigger and better infotainment screens, sunroofs and generally better equipment, we get cheaped out versions that isn't even really cheap. They are taking us for a ride but you guys are so brainwashed by the legacy of the brand you don't see it. They are making tons of money while consumers can't enjoy good cars with great features. The Chinese give us world class cars with features the legacy manufacturers want to gate keep and pretend is expensive to make standard or offer. Not anymore.
..."maybe Chery poached a throttle mappist from a European brand"😂...in all seriousness though, I don’t like supporting brands built on communistic principles such as command-driven economics, controlling outputs, stealing tech, no representation for the workforce. But hey, we in SA ate lnown for discarding our democratic principles for our own ends (the ANC leading us ably in this regard).
I agree with you. I dont buy American cars coz they keep invading and bombing people. I dont buy Japanese cars because they committed various war crimes against other asians. I dont buy European cars coz they invaded ZA and were pro blue eyes. We're talking about cars right?😂😂😂
So you prefer brands that's built on milking the consumer for all they have and providing less quality and features for the sake of more profits. Then you mask it in silly propaganda. China is more free than so called democratic countries you think are better. In China, it's actually safe. Something we don't have. They have infrastructure and way better quality of life. Their economy is doing better than so called free economies. Economies that are only free when they win (eg the US that adds tariffs because they can't compete... That's not a free market). Also, the Chinese cars have tech legacy carmakers don't have. How can they steal something the others don't even have. Your anti China BS isn't fooling anyone. But hey, people like you are known for licking the boots of the western countries. 🙄 You go buy your overpriced legacy car.
Sorry about that, it is weird as we did some testing on a few devices and it fluctuated. But we're aware of it and will rectify for the next comparison video. Thanks for watching!
12:07 why is when Chinese car makers get something right, the argument is that they must have copied it from Western manufacturers? Get off the high horse bandwagon and acknowledge excellence in the Chinese car industry: high quality for less 🎉

Is Chinese really cheaper? Considering it shrinks our economy, it adds to unemployment! Ill rather have a job, buy premium for a tiguan than having to pay cheaper for something called a chery that fewer employed people can afford. In that regard VW serves more people
Three Chinese manufacturers will be building factories here in the next two years which will create employment. Competition for the legacy automakers is tough but foreign direct investment usually has a positive effect, especially if those factories source their parts from local suppliers.
@Carscoza Chinese ethics are still much to be desired. The Chinese are keeping african countries for randsome. They are not interested in empowering South Arica. Look at the rest of Africa. A competent government would not allow Chinese poor ethics. For that reason I will always choose VW over something called a chery et al
I have got to say Chinese are really turning things around..... I hope some day their cars are really good and stay cheaper. We over paying for everything folks😮 Truth is iPhone 14 is being assembled with just $10 before overhead costs in China. you would ague about things like value chain, overhead costs and things like logistics and customs. However why are we really paying R30 000 for an iphone? in my opinion is $100 which is R1 900.

Why did you not use Tiggo 7 pro for this comparison. It’s basically the same car as the Tiggo 8 Pro but only a 5 seater and cost is even less money.
Not a bad idea but the price point of the Tiggo 7 is too low for this category. Thanks for watching!
Second!
Okay let’s all go get a cherry🤓🙏🤣
Awesome sum up Cirro
Personally I love fuel economy though and I believe that Kia will really deliver 🙆🏾♂️🫠🤷🏾♂️
The Chinese have really come in hard shame putting pressure on these other offerings 🫢
I wouldn't buy any of them, the prices just solidifies my take on it.
The Chinese are clever in limiting you to 3 trims and all they have to worry about is the different colour. Optional extras should be for like special items not everyday things. I think Ciro needs to get a different pram to test.
Haha what sort of pram would you recommend 😅
@Carscoza one of those that all Sandton and Foursway Mommy's have with the over sized wheels
Lexus has been doing the Full house thing since forever.
Good point
Cherry should win
In my eyes vw can just stop making cars
Ciro glazing the Chery lekker there
i guess i got the bad chery tiggo 8 pro max.. the seats got torn within a year.. and engine light comes on most of the time especially when you full throttle trying to overtake.. yesterday I opened the sunroof, then it started shaking and making weird noses. I bought the Car last year October when they first arrived and I am on 4000km, I went to cape twice with it from Durban, I also drove to Eastern Cape several times.. But I am really not happy, and it is under warranty but I a not getting help, the seats are getting terrible. I do not want to lie I enjoy the car but the frustration, I think its not worth it. You keep talking about Chery's comfort, eish, ayy I do not know about that BUT ONE THINK I CAN TELL YOU I AM STARTING TO REGRET BIG TIME.. I WISH I COULD SHARE PICTURES SO YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELVES
That's a real shame to hear - we're getting some good stories but also some not-so-good ones with the new car. Please drop us an email and we'll try help, youtubeadmin@cars.co.za
What is the age restriction for your OnlyPrams? 😄
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks Ciro, great review. Not a fan of Chinese cars at all. However, eventhough much more expensive, all three these cars have a better interior than the new BMWX3. Cant wait for you to do that review.
Kia is still the winner.
🍒 FTW
Drive tiggo in sport mode.
Except these are cars most families can't afford.
Hi there, we aim to make the #CarsAwards as inclusive as possible by awarding winners in 13 categories across a wide pricing spectrum. You can see all the finalists and all the categories here: www.cars.co.za/motoring-news/2025-carsawards-the-finalists/252194/
Tiguan all the way
Based on?
@RRSmurf yes
And yet the Rav4 is still the best in this segment
Lol
Lol really though 😂
It’s an older generation
Lol you wish. We have one and the Chery Tiggo 8 is a way better car than our Rav. My friends Tiggo 8 drives quieter, smoother, has more power, uses less fuel, has better build and material quality. There's nothing competitive about the Rav4.
The RAV4 Hybrid is very good but pricey, the standard one with the 2.0L NA engine and CVT box is pretty terrible to drive unfortunately
The only alternative to challenge them for bang for the buck is Mahindra XUV700 or Scorpio N.
Definitely good options
21:39 no fake exhaust pipes, real stuff, which is rare these days (German cars - wink wink)
The Chinese brands are exposing this market leaders indeed ,we have been ripped off for years 😅
Chery as a rental, the other 2 as keeppers. You can't use toys daily, you will get bored.
Outdated view. Kia services are expensive. VWs are even worse. VW is low on reliability rankings too. You wait and see.
Spare wheel under the car of the Cherry. No thank you. Seats and interior looks cheap as well.
what an unfair family category comparison 1.4 petrol vs 1.6 diesel and 2.0 petrol 7-seater
..."maybe Chery poached a throttle mappist from a European brand"😂...in all seriousness though, I don’t like supporting brands built on communistic principles such as command-driven economics, controlling outputs, stealing tech, no representation for the workforce.
Not too far in the distant future, you’ll battle to find a new car for less than a bar. 🤦🏼♂️
You will find Chines cars for less than that with all the tech
Tiguan R902k never 👎🏿, they can keep it😭
700k for a 1,4 😢
Chery Tiggo grill triggers some serious trypophobia.
Oh really? Is it the front grill?
and this video has the lowest audio on the channel
Sorry about that, it is weird as we did some testing on a few devices and it fluctuated. But we're aware of it and will rectify for the next comparison video. Thanks for watching!
12:07 why is when Chinese car makers get something right, the argument is that they must have copied it from Western manufacturers? Get off the high horse bandwagon and acknowledge excellence in the Chinese car industry: high quality for less 🎉
My line at the end was that the Tiggo is not just a good Chinese car, it's a good car full stop.
KIA Sportage is the best, the GT-Line S is a dream
This language is neither Afrikaans nor Xhosa. Is this not a South African channel 🤔? WTF
We're not sure what you mean?
I think I'm loosing my mind but I'm sure this video was playing in a foreign language three days ago. And now it's in English 😮. I even fast forwarded the video because I thought it was a prank but it continued in that foreign language. Rewatching the video today and it's playing in English. I don't know what's going on, askies guys I feel like a real duch
Almost 1mil for a full spec tiguan 1.4 with turbo. Nope and nope again volkswagen. They are milking the cow dry now.
I can’t stand the current gen of VW interiors. The way the piano blacks are used just feels cheap AF.
Great video
My Money goes to the Cherry Tiggo, great value for Money
I actually I have a successful review of the Tiggo 8 in my channel, go check it out
Money well spent
Pity the Kia has such an ugly frontend, otherwise a good car.
The Chery a lot narrower than the other 2
My cousin bought one, inside it's huge.
I think it's a bit of an optical illusion as it is taller and longer
1st to comment😁
Lol you were the first to say nothing 😂😂😂
You're a legend :)
I have got to say Chinese are really turning things around..... I hope some day their cars are really good and stay cheaper. We over paying for everything folks😮
Truth is iPhone 14 is being assembled with just $10 before overhead costs in China. you would ague about things like value chain, overhead costs and things like logistics and customs. However why are we really paying R30 000 for an iphone? in my opinion is $100 which is R1 900.
Tiguans look is a bit dated!
