He was intimidated by Teddy in the beginning…he didn’t notice the tell until he had nothing left to lose and realized he was winning, then he started focusing and playing his game!
As late as he was to the scene, this sums up Norton's character completely: strolling in, expecting everyone to be happy to see him when they despise him, and flagrantly violating the tables rules by leeching off his friend assuming he can charm his way out of it. What a parasite.
On top of that every mannerism describes worm perfectly. He makes a comment about avoiding this low life activity and then heads to go get some compped noodles. Worm also loves to drain every single penny out of a situation and is greedy. Notice that soy sauce bottle he was literally going to dump it all in the soup. Love this scene and this movie as a whole -- but I just realized something. Even though this wasn't a romance movie, I noticed there was more chemistry between Mike and Petra than Mike ever had with his girlfriend, Jo. In fact, there was no real love between Mike and Jo. Petra has always been sweet and lovely with Mike while Jo was always cold and critical. My theory is that Mike was so obsessed with the game of poker that he doesn't realize he was in a loveless relationship with Jo but he also didn't even realize that he had a potential soulmate in Petra, who also seem to be share the same interest as him. Their scene in his apartment watching Johnny Chan at the WSOP on TV was another interesting point. This is validated by the fact that Mike was also in a toxic friendship with Worm, whom he thought was a real friend who almost had him killed, but he also didn't see the real friendship with Joey Knish, who acted more like a brother than Worm ever did. This is pretty ironic from a guy who can read complete strangers in card rooms but can't even read the people closest to him. Rounders might be a deeper movie than we thought!
maybe i watched a different movie. Mike never shows an ounce of interest in Petra. and he rejects her like a friend's desperate kid sister in his apartment, which is probably the way he's always felt about her since he never responds to any of her flirting. and Jo was "cold and critical" when Mike was messing up, which was pretty much the only interactions we saw between the two. gambling was a vice with Mike similar to if it had been women, drugs, alcohol, etc. and we know Jo saw this vice ruin him and she wasn't going to go through that with him again. since we can assume she was with him through the darkest time of his life and didn't want him to return, they had to have had a strong bond to go through that together. so imagine her disappointment when at the beginning of the movie he expresses his admiration for the vice with the judges' game. like he was about to get tugged right back into the life. and of course he did. doesn't mean their relationship was loveless before, we just didn't get much of a chance to see it because he messed up so early.
@@whitedevil2 Granted, I understand from Jo's POV why she was so "disappointed" with Mike and we're witnessing the end of their relationship, not the "honeymoon" phase of their relationship so I feel some symphony for Jo, even though she knew exactly what kind of guy Mike was when she met him. Losing his entire bankroll probably killed whatever trust she could have for Mike. As for Petra and Mike, I read the original script and Petra was actually Mike's ex girlfriend from the past, hence why he rejected her kiss from the scene. My theory is simple: Mike has the uncanny ability to read anyone except the people who are closest to him. For that, he's blind and clueless. Someone also said that Teddy KGB's tell with his Oreo cookie was too obvious for a player like Mike to miss in the beginning. The thing is, Mike knew Teddy and he was blind to him as well. In the end, when Mike finally realizes Teddy's tell, it was like Mike can finally see everything so clearly. That's just my take on the film.

I remember seeing one hand where Damon tried to pull off what poker pros call "Hollywooding". It was so obvious that all the players saw right through it. Kind of ironic that the actor lost a big pot due to bad acting.
Reading somebody’s tell makes for good tv/movies. But like string bets, they aren’t really a part of real world poker. Good players don’t have them, and bad players are too stupid to be useful. Sure he’s got a tell that says monster hand. But does he even know what counts as a monster hand in that circumstance?
"...but then again we're not playing against each other really." In the commentary track with Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth this was the part where they were all laughing and screaming "Bullshit!" simultaneously.
The joke is that "tells!!" are some magic key. Relax. Dudes wear hats, sunglasses, hoods, masks, full-on horse blinders... Movies pretend it's 15% of the game, it ain't even 5.
I don't play poker anymore but there was a time when I wanted to see how good I could be so I played as much as I could (I had a family and a job with overtime so my playing time was limited). I remember this time in limit hold'em where about 5 player were in the pot and all rounds were being bet to the max. I had a small flush and got out (I don't remember if I made it to the river or not) and was shocked when a small straight won the pot (and by the way, the player who won also seemed shock that he won). I suddenly realized (I was so freaking naive) that some of those players were playing together and were betting to drive other players out or to make the pot bigger in case that one of them "hit" and I felt so stupid because it had not occurred to me that people would be doing that and that there is no way to consistently win when people are colluding against you.
This is accurate. At my local casino all the regulars know each other. We'll still try to win, but it's so much easier winning money from a player we haven't seen before. Sometimes I'll fold a pretty good hand if I see a couple of other regulars interested in the hand. It's not collusion, but playing smart. Pay attention at any table on which players are chatting friendly with one another, and especially players who arrive together. Also, if you see players arrive dressed in suits, chances are very high they've just come from a conference and 90% of the time have no idea how to play.
how are they "scamming" tourists? they're just much better players. the pros didn't lure them over to the table under some kind of false pretenses. there's no scam.
They're not scamming. They're just more skilled. It's like saying the Patriots scammed other teams to win every Superbowl (like deflating footballs and such).
I love the idea of this movie...that poker is full of sharks in casinos... but the reality of it (at least in Detroit) is that it's full of drunks and people there with the adrenaline addiction of sucking out on a straight "f-it" gamble the run those tables...lol 200-500 games play like $.50 limit poker at the dog track in Sarasota back in they day....no foldem' holdem. lol no poker geniuses...just gambling addicts looking for their highs I used to like playing there but since they made the bad beat jackpots at all the casinos harder to win than the actual lottery, I don't bother so much any more.
Nah when this movie came out the Taj was full of grinders. Of course there were gambling addicts here and there but they came and went. The regulars lived at the Taj just feeding off tourists the casino attracted for them daily. It was a feeding frenzy for the most part
This is true. Had one night in Reno to close out a trip to Tahoe… Figured I’d hop in on a poker tournament to kill some time. I was the first out lol I was maybe in the game for 20-25 mins.
They really are not "scamming" anyone. The only edge the sharks have on regular joes is 1. they of course have a ton of experience and 2. They are not afraid of losing money or betting.. But the sharks who always claim luck has nothing to do with it are always fooling themselves. Someone gets a big hand, they get a big hand. And fish make money on fish. I only play very rarely and I have won plenty at casino poker tables. They all would consider me a fish, and I am, but I still won.
I believe you need to rethink your definition of 'scamming'. There is no scam in beating less skilled players fair and square. If you'd said 'feasting on' or even 'preying on' you'd be a lot closer to reality.
@@Wes36Man Definitely not. It was akin to Alabama playing Cincinnati. Alabama didn’t scam Cincinnati…they were simply more skilled and took advantage of their opportunities.
it's not fair n square when they're colluding. if every player was for themselves, sure, but admitting they're actively trying not to feast on each other is pretty darn close to a scam to me. if you colluded like this in a tournament people would freak the fuck out.
@@johns783 That is a good point I guess. What’s he say? We’re not necessarily playing with each other, but we’re not playing against each other either. The big guy big said “if we wanted to take each other’s rolls we could have just just home.” That implies that the entire goal of going to Atlantic City was to feast on the fish, but when all the regulars from the Chesterfield showed up it basically just turned into their regular game except for the odd fish that sat down every now and then and they all got wiped out pretty much immediately.
I hate that I'm watching this movie completely out of order on RUclips over the period of a few weeks instead of just spending the hour and a hand half just to sit down and watch it 🤦
there's always a chance. not a good one, but a chance. in the short term, like a single session, luck can play a factor. doesn't matter how you 'act', coolers happen, suck outs happen, and all ins where there's a 5050 chance to win all happen, and if the beginner is on enough of the winning side in a given session, then they can book a win vs anyone.
No. Going up against a pro poker player is like going up against a pro anything. Imagine playing high school football and then getting shoved into an NFL game. All the looks and acting isn't going to save you from getting pancaked.
I entered a tournament in the smaller casinos in Vegas bills if I recall correctly. I made it to the last table final 5-6 if I made it to top 3-4 my winnings would have doubled. I had a smaller stack of chips and slow played the best I could. I only paid pair of kings, pair of aces and may 2 other hands. The whole table would call pushing me out. Once I saw this movie I realized all the usuals or locals pushed me out the same exact way.
Without seeing this entire movie....why did Ed Norton's character beg to go gambling, then get so excited to go, only to arrive to chat up some skirt, get booted off a table, then eat free food? What was the eagerness all about?
He just got out of prison. He was indeed eager to go gambling, but not having had sex in X years, the relaxation therapist trumped everything. (No pun intended).
I like how he says no amount of luck is going to help those two guys against the group. Please. Poker is one of the craziest games in the world, in that you can play PERFECTLY, and still lose. Admit it or not, there is an INCREDIBLE amount of luck involved in it.
There's a common bit of poker etiquette that I completely disagree with. It says "don't hit and run". If you win big early, you're not supposed to get up and leave without giving the other players a chance to win their money back. Eff that. If I'm at a table full of pros, and I run good and build up a stack, I'm cashing out and quitting with a nice profit. If those two guys won big, they'd need to take their winnings and go, The longer they stayed, the worse off they'd be.

The joke is that "tells!!" are some magic key.
Relax.

You can turn it around on them by just playing tight. When you hit the nuts, just let them bait you in and surprise them.
Colluding happens a lot at most casino poker rooms. Unless you’re running real good you’re almost guaranteed to lose…. especially in limit poker.
Most of the stars at the same table. All they needed was KGB, the girlfriend and Joe Fusco Jr...
It wasn't until I saw this that I realized what had happened in the card room in Ocean's 11. I appreciate the subtlety.
“Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker.”
Alot of talented actors and actresses in this movie
We are playing against each other…… lol that’s angling.
how are they "scamming" tourists? they're just much better players. the pros didn't lure them over to the table under some kind of false pretenses. there's no scam.
collusion is scamming.
@@alcoholya they weren't colluding. they weren't secretly working together. they just all have the same understanding of how to attack weaker players.
Why would Mike choose to sit down at a table with a bunch of good players? He'd make a lot more money by choosing a table full of tourists.
You register for game type and limits at the poker room and when a seat opens you get called .. he registers then just happens to get that table.
They're not scamming. They're just more skilled. It's like saying the Patriots scammed other teams to win every Superbowl (like deflating footballs and such).
The Patriots did scam the other teams to win the Superbowl. They paid off the refs. It was a fumble.
It’s amazing that the casino would allow this many pro’s at one table. It’s like a wood-chipper.
Why would the casino care? They win anyway.
From back then, they wouldn't care. Maybe a mob game would either say don't show up on X night or stop showing up at all.
I love the idea of this movie...that poker is full of sharks in casinos...
but the reality of it (at least in Detroit) is that it's full of drunks and people there with the adrenaline addiction of sucking out on a straight "f-it" gamble the run those tables...lol
200-500 games play like $.50 limit poker at the dog track in Sarasota back in they day....no foldem' holdem. lol
no poker geniuses...just gambling addicts looking for their highs
I used to like playing there but since they made the bad beat jackpots at all the casinos harder to win than the actual lottery, I don't bother so much any more.
Pre-2003 World Series
This isnt about Detroit LOL
Nah when this movie came out the Taj was full of grinders. Of course there were gambling addicts here and there but they came and went. The regulars lived at the Taj just feeding off tourists the casino attracted for them daily. It was a feeding frenzy for the most part
This was prime Norton. Loved him in this.
Principle Anderson went from scamming Billy to scamming tourists
This is true. Had one night in Reno to close out a trip to Tahoe… Figured I’d hop in on a poker tournament to kill some time. I was the first out lol I was maybe in the game for 20-25 mins.
“Scamming” tourists?! Lol. Nope. All they did was pick up on their tells and beat them in poker…fair and square.
Which is scamming tourists
@@okapmeinkap7311 scamming means doing something untoward, reading tells is far from untoward

I was thinking the same thing, definitely not a scam
Well they are scamming them because the tourists don’t know what they’re getting into, it’s not unfair, but it’s stacked heavily against them
There is no scamming at this, just outplaying opposition.
If you would shoot this scene today it would be a comedy, especially with their facial expressions that are so over the top....
I hate that I'm watching this movie completely out of order on RUclips over the period of a few weeks instead of just spending the hour and a hand half just to sit down and watch it 🤦
I was at the Taj when they filmed this. Good times 😊
Hes a card shark but yet tries to buy chips off another player lol
“Nobody fucks with the Jesus”
If you were a beginner poker player could you beat a pro by looking and acting like you've never played before?
It's better for a good player to look and act like they've never played before.....not a beginner.
there's always a chance. not a good one, but a chance. in the short term, like a single session, luck can play a factor. doesn't matter how you 'act', coolers happen, suck outs happen, and all ins where there's a 5050 chance to win all happen, and if the beginner is on enough of the winning side in a given session, then they can book a win vs anyone.
No. Going up against a pro poker player is like going up against a pro anything. Imagine playing high school football and then getting shoved into an NFL game. All the looks and acting isn't going to save you from getting pancaked.
@@weirdshibainu buddy you can make a dumb call against a pro in poker and catch a 1 or 2 outer and still win. its absolutely nothing like football
I purposely don't know what I'm doing when I play poker so nobody else can guess what I'm doing lol.
I was a sucker more than a few times in Vegas after watching this movie.
Please. With the right hold cards, and flop, turn, or river, ANYBODY can felt even the best player in the world in a one time sit down.
@@CrabbyOldLady I heard about that. Its called, "Going South", and it is supposedly a big no no in the poker world lol.
There was an episode of "High Stakes Poker" where Daniel Negraneau and Johnny Chan accused Freddy Deeb of doing that, and BOY was Freddy offended at the accusation lol.
That ain't "scamming". That's just skilled players beating unskilled players.
BTW, poker pros laugh at the line about how "we're not playing together, but then again we're not playing against each other either." Oh, yes they are playing against each other. Every hand.
Scamming implies something shady, I'm pretty sure you meant to say "outplayed' those tourists.
I miss the Taj. Started playing there was I was 19 =)

They simply outplay them cause they are way better in the game of poker. They aren't using no tricks, marked cards or collusion.
