- You must have the proper supplies to keep a turtle. That includes a tank, heater, uva/uvb bulbs, basking area, filter, decor, turtle food, water conditioner, thermometer, etc. I hope this helps all the people that will soon be turtle owners!
i love how the turtles follow you!
hi, does anyone know what kind of water you need to use
The 11 Year Old Singer normal drinking water without chlorine

Me: Has none of these things
Me: Well sh!t

1:03 😍🤩 My heart just exploded.
The turtle in the beginning is like "MOM.! MOM HELP.!!!! PUT ME DOWN, NO, NOOOOOO"
Thanks so much! I just got a Eastern Painted Turtle from a relative and I had no clue how to take care of him, it was kinda scaring me too but now I see what supplies I should get.
I bought all my turtles from turtle sale, turtle shack and they were perfectly healthy, aware, and beautiful. No issues whatsoever. When they sent them they were packaged perfectly so they wouldn't get hurt.
haha I love how your turtle sprawls out on his basking dock :D
this one is expensive and not for beginners i think
true
Arderon it's 1.5 thousand because it's rare and hard to care for
AndrewLiong Igx
AndrewLiong d
FlannyXan why would anyone pay for a expensive turtle geez the only diffrence from a RES OR A YBS Is that its harder to care for in my opinion i would not want an expensive turtle
Turtles are so cute ! IDK why they just are!
I recommend you getting the biggest tank you can because they grow fast and get big. The rule is for every inch of shell you'll need ten gallons of water.
Wow you got many turtles they are awesome.I got turtles too and i absolutely love them.
The lil turtles seem to love the camera

You should preface that beginner turtle owners should try and buy turtles that are a little bit older. As cute and wonderful it is to have a hatchling, baby turtles are notoriously susceptible to infection, particularly respiratory infection. To save heartbreak for any new turtle owners, try and buy juveniles. They will likely cost a little more but will also give you a little more hardy turtle. The size of Jessie's caramel pink should be good for reference.
I want a turtle so I am saving my money,I'm nervous because I don't want my mom to say no.
My mum said no :(
Tell her that your ready and prepared and that you know what to do.
I told her that yesterday and my mom said yes.But I have to save my money it will be hard.
Mines the opposite.
I have all the money but my mum is saying no. Good luck
Thank you.
GirlCrafter19 are you 19? Do you work?
Lol, I found my baby red eared- sliders out of my pool. They just wandered in.
Great video :), I just got a baby turtle and I got everything you said but the heater. Just have to wait till my next pay check lol. I got a live plant for it to eat too, hopefully it wont overeat because of it. Got a 20 gallon too, wanted a bigger one but I guess Ill have to upgrade later. Thanks for all the info!
nice collection👍👌
thank you
Great video, very informative! Thank you :) your turtles are beautiful also!
@97zeroordie yes depending on how many turtles you have, you might need to clean the tank more
beautiful turtles
That sounds fine to me, you may want to consider getting a larger tank in about half a year, maybe take out any decorative things such as plants/rocks if the tank looks cramps.
They WILL grow in the first year and so you will need to accommodate for this growth or it will negatively affect their health due to lack of exercise/fouling of water etc. Plus, its just unfair for you to keep a large turtle in a small tank :P
Yes you can but there is no guarantee that the turtle won't eat the fish.
I gave my turtle a few feeder fish and two of them survived, got big, and lived in the tank for a year and a half… and then got eaten. I also have cichlids in the tank. The turtle ignored them for a few months. now there's one missing.
just remember that the turtle is very messy. And adding fish will create more waste so you need a very good filtration system.
Love your Turtles
oh wow that really helped me for my turtle..... thx!
Great video. I really appreciate your care for the turtles. I am just finishing setting up my aquarium and doing my research as well. Let me ask you.... bottom line, where would you recommend me buying my first turtles. I want to buy from someone reputable and trustworthy. Thanks so much for your time!
Such a pretty turtle in the beginning!
I like your videos I hope we can see more videos
The bigger the better! it also helps you save money cuz you wont have have to buy a new tank for awhile unless you want to
i boght 6 baby red ear sliders from turtle shaq and they all came ok and they wer small and i love ur turtles
your turtle are very beautiful !!!
The Fish Lover Thank you
doesnt matter the age really but the size of the turtle matters. Usually better to have 20 gallon or over- they grow bigger over time and need space to maneuver
THIS TURTLE IS SOOOOO CUTE
You do need a thermometer around making area so you can know what the temp is. Other wise you can have to little heat or to much and fry your turtle
+Theresa Leonard my basking area is well monitored
Perhaps one of the most important things is to realize is that owning a turtle is a 30-40 year commitment!
@Headrush54 I didn't just throw them all in the tank together without slowly introducing them to each other. They live together just fine.
you always have to have a heat lamp/ uvb lamp because its good for their shell and bones. !!! :) and sorry i dont know your second question !
so beautiful pink skin
I got a yellow belly slider off of them and he is great
Thank you so much i am going to soon get a red eared slider hatch ling!!!!!!!!! So thank you i only have a well this is embarrassing........... 2.5 tank!!!!!!!!!! so getting lots of stuff then a 10 or 20 gallon tank!!!!!!!!! so thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think it is hilarious when turtles stick there legs out when there under heat lights
i have two yellow belly sliders and i feed mine celery along with dried shrimp, turtle pellets, ham and other fruit and vegetables ,... but not brocoli or leeks as they prevent calcium absorbsion
@tigers3010 I'd go with a 30 or 40 gallon (if i had the money) and for a 30 or 40 i would go with a 90 to a 120 gallon filter. I have heard many people say that you need to triple your tank size and that will be what size filter you should get.
your turtles are beautiful
Maria Swinning thank you
So I have been helping my friend who was given 3 painters her shtty neighbors said take them or we are throwing them in the trash.. yes you read that right. so naturally she took them in and her and her boyfriend needed help so i bought them a 30 gal tank we put almost 30 gal in it prob 28 the tank might be a lil bigger either way I bought them a uvb or a lamp and a separate basking lamp as well as a water heater, temp gauge and a Fluval C4 40-70gal hang on side filter and the tank wont stay clean for more then 2 days and we are all going crazy we put a second Aqua-tech 20-40gal hang on side filter as well and that gave us about 4-5 days between water changes.... until the Aqua tech broke and we are back to 2 day water changes and filter media changing / cleaning we are desperate to find a good filter I have looked at canister filters and i have looked at internal filters and hanging filters and i dont know what to do we are all just really stressed out and would love to have a tank that doesnt need almost daily changes the tank is basically full and it is a good long size tank and they love to swim and seem to have enough room im sure they will have to upgrade to a 75 or 100 sometime in the future but for now this is it so with keeping a possible tank upgrade in mind what do you suggest we get for aa filter and tips would be greatly appreciated for someone who is new to all this and would like to help their friends out thanks for your time! -Jim
Nice
That struggle you re telling about with filters , i experienced that too.
It took a while before i new what to use, but anyway,
the best filters are those huge things you put outside the tank, you called them cannister filter( sorry english isn t my native language ) i believe.
the one i have, is about 15 inch big and 7 inch wide, and cleans 2000 ltr water every hour.
the water always looks clean, but i ll change it once a week.
But i hope you have something from this information, good luck with them !
try making your own a lot cheaper and can be easier to maintain i forget his channel name but theres a guy on here who has great videos showing his diy aquarium filter, just size it up for your turtle thats what I'm doing works great have a big place 6 inch red belly cooter and a 4 inch gourami
It's the Nitrogen Cycle. Let it play out.
Great video.....I also keep turtles and other animals.....your friend CHRIS THE HOBBY GUY
UVB bulbs are certainly needed, go research MBD and see for yourself how important it is. Not many people will take their turtle outside for hours each day for them to gain the required UVB intake.
And water conditioner doesn't take dirt from the water but is claimed to make the chemicals in tap water safe. I would never use it but I needed to correct you.
I just got a baby turtle I have a rock area for drying, a house for it to hide in, and obviously water and a double lamb with a heat bulb and light bulb do I need a water heater if not how do I keep my water warm without one
best vid on turtles on youtube
Great info vid..yo that girl got huge she beautiful I like all ur lil colorful turtles lol
Very helpful, thank you J.E.!!
your welcome
You can, but it may be harder for you to clean? If you don't mind that then go for it.
Make sure that the gravel you buy is big enough so your terrapins don't choke on it (i'm not sure how frequent this is, but never take chances :P)
im getting mine for my b-day
that turtle is seriously so cute. :D
its so hard to take care a turtle but i want to keep them XD thanks!
+Raiyan Jahari Once you get the hang of it, it isn't take hard
Upgrade your filtering system, you shouldn't have to clean the tank that often. You can also you snails to help keep the tank clean, but your turtle may it them every so often.
caramel pinks are so beautiful =)
those r so cool i have always wanted a albino turtle but 4 now i got a male RES and MISSISSIPPI MAP both since little babys well the res turt was bit bigger then a canadian toonie but the map was hatchling like a 25 cent coin SMALL but very active and hungry when well no more then 3 days old i got him or her i can tell the res cause the nails long and fat long tail map is starting to get longer but small skinny tail they get along well res is boss cause older bit bigger babys r best watching gro
Although if you're like me and you have a fly river turtle they're (I believe) the only freshwater turtle that doesn't need an out of water basking or resting area... Also the only freshwater turtle with flippers. I actually make videos on mine on this channel he's in a pretty big tank and doing well! :) lol
1:01 'da fuq...she gone??? yuh! let's spliiiiiiittttttttt
nice video! very helpful
i have a red ear slider and i have to clean the tank like every other week. am i doing something wrong.?
I have a yellow bely slider turtle and its an 1 and a half inches and it wont eat meal worm and shrimp and crickets that i feed her and their all freezed dried
it depends on what turtle and if you do watch it encase any predators come for it
i always had 5 above my tank it works pretty good
I LUV TURTLES
@RECONICxi UVA are rays the like the heat from the sun, UVB are the rays that give off the other natural benefits of the sun
great video
thanks
When My RES was in his 10gal tank, he had a 60gal filter lol
You don't need plant in a turtle tank according to a manager at petco. I guess petco doesn't want my money the day I went to petco and question about what type of plant works for turtle tank. I was advised, no plant regardless if it's real or artificial. The manager took me over to their turtle tank set up and show me me the appropriate ways to keep red ear slider in a tank.
@apple40401 yes, even if you have well water. There are chemicals in the water that can be harmful to the turtle
Nice turts
Why do many people not put gravle/small stones or anything on the bottom of the tank? This girl mentioned "making them feel at home"; what do you think is on the bottom of the water areas in their natural habitat, glass???
cute turtles
Nice turtles and videos!
Michael Fogel thank you
feed once a day and your going to have to get a larger tank for later down the road
omg ur turtles are so cool
How strong does the UVB/UVA light have to be? I have two baby res. Right now I have a 13 watt UVB and a 75 watt UVA bulb for basking. I also have the tank by my window and leave it open since I get direct sunlight. It's perfect right now for the summer but when winter comes around, I want to make sure I have the best lighting possible for them. And may I also add that baby turtles need a high protein diet to help them grow. Your turtles are beautiful by the way :)
great turtle....
i have an alligator snapping turtle but you said you should have 3x the amount a filtration as the filter does and i have a 40 gallon tank and a 65 gallon filter is that ok i coulnt afford anything bigger it was 100$ for the filter and it does work great
i liked and watched the video, though i'm experienced enough :)
good video btw,
Guide to owning turtle(s) 101: First you gotta have lots and lots of money. Be prepared to spend a fortune on a friend that could live up to 40+ years with you xD
Hello there! I have recently taken an interest in turtles and turtle care, and I have a few questions. First of all, I would like to know what species of turtle is best for beginners. I am looking for a turtle that is on the smaller end of the size scale, and preferably a land turtle. Also, what types of supplies do you recommend? (filters, food, tanks, basking docks, etc...). I am also wondering what types of plants that turtles can eat. I hope someone gets back to me! Have a wonderful day!
i was wondering where you could order all your supplies for a turtle? i haven't seen anything anywhere. :o
like the lamps, and docks, and food, and all that jaz
naomi watchmedance There are many places you can get your turtle supplies from. I personally get mine from Petco, Petsmart, All Pets Club, Fosterandsmith.com
I had to save two RES turtles (terrapins) they were in unfiltered, unheated, water as well as maybe a 6 gal tank? anyway..
I picked them up yesterday, there in a half full 3ft X 2ft, Ive drilled a hole in the top so they now have a basking lamp ( reptile basking bulb 60W pets at home) Im going to buy a UV-B exo-glow flurrocent tube on they 15th ( soonest i can do it) ive got them eating terrapin food from pets at home and someblood worm I use for my crayfish, other than that what more do i need? ( my water is at a constant 72F) and I can buy a cheap heater no issues, Ive a broken terracotta pot for them to bask on, one is maybe 5inches the other I think is stunted!! Now... that smaller one was unable to open its eyes untill this morning i noticed it could open them slightly, I dont know if this is just because of the water in the tank they were in before or if he has an illness, Ive decided to buy some fish oil and will apply some to his eyes with a Q-tip tonight! please reply asap.
Ive currently got a small internal filter (crappy i know)
but ive order a 600litres an hour bucket filter which should be here in.. 5days.
Ive also brought some cuttlefish bone stuff for birds, Ive read its great for calcium.
Other than that I'm worried for my little stunted guy, Untill i put the basking lamp in he just layed motionless at the bottom of the tank with his eyes sealed closed, atleast now he has some life in him, even climbing on his friends back hahaha, but he has a poor shell, ive even noticed a small hole asif a bird has pekced at him, im hoping the UV-B and cuttlefish bone will help? :/
Poorly written i know but im rushing around websites trying to just have a 1 on 1 convo with someone about this
Thanks
lewis
Sorry for a late reply, How's your little one doing? Since the problem seems to emerge from his eyes, he may be vitamin A deficient, If he's willing to eat carrots then be sure to give him some. If he's not then try to find it as a supplement, be sure not to over supplement. I'd suggest you place him under the sun for 10-30 min daily if it doesn't stress him out, the sun is a far superior source of uvb. The cuttlebone is great but some turtles don't touch it, if he's not into it try to get a calcium supplement. I'd suggest you raise the water temp to 78F, and if the little one is still sick then place him alone and raise the water temp to 82F. If you're on a low budget just buying them a pool(like in my video), should serve them the same and be affordable. If you have any further questions I'd be pleased to help.
Thanks mate!! Right, Here we go, I now have a 60 watt basking bulb and i built a 1.5 ft long basking platform, Ive acquired an external filter capable of 650Ltr and a small internal filter for extra filtration and current
, ive acquired a 10% UVB florescent tube (18W) with a reflector,
im feeding them terrapin feed from pets at home and crickets, Ive began hand feeding them carrot in small bite size pieces once a day and they have no issues feeding like so,
Im considering buying A mecury bulb for extra uv as the platform cover a fair chunk of surface area..
After all this I ran out of money and didnt buy a tank heater, the tank water is at 79F once the bulb has been on a while, but the water temp must drop to atleast 24F at night, which isnt helpful i know, ALSO in the UK this time of year sunlight is superscarces, and when some sunshine comes out its like 4-5 0c out, will they be okay in sunlight but exsposed to that temp?
ALSO! he can see fine now :) no eye swelling as far as i can see! (no vet) Very lively and friendly, the shell holes still worry me greatly, he has began "cherping", some say he has respatory infection, but it seems to be communication with me.. like when I go near his tank where his food is he cherps! but I have noticed cherps at night when I'm in bed (I share a room with 4 tanks..) is it worth me spending £40 taking him to the vet? plus £70+for whaterver medical treatment required?
Lewis Coveney for the shell problems this link should help: www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medshell.htm . As for a vet treatment, I would always think it's better to take him to a vet, just make sure it's a reptile or exotic pet vet and don't be afraid to scrutinize to make sure. Over here we have zero vets who are specialized in reptiles but given the opportunity they wouldn't leave out an appointment fee. Since you're low on money, I would take measures to help the turtle first then if in time their is no improvement or it got worse then I'd take it to a vet. As for the sun, it's too cold for them so forget it for now. The best basking bulb I could recommend would be the mega ray, second being the zoomed powersun. The one you have should do for thermo regulation but some extra vitamin d3 supplementation is preferable. Be absolutely sure not to supplement, keep in mind your pellets or veggies may have some vitamin in them too. Id suggest you try some dandelion greens with them, they're one of the best vegetable food to give, though young turtles are more carnivorous. If I've missed in anything or if you have more detailed question please contact me at Mozein15@gmail.com , I'd be glad to help.
Lewis Coveney correction for most previous comment : be sure not to over supplement, not not to supplement
Haha I just told one teacher that works at the school I do, a student brought in a pet turtle in a little ten gallon, (Maybe) tank. All it has is about 3 inches of water, and a few small rocks, no light, thermometer, nothing. no basking area.
Told her today the enclosure is too small . all the turtle is doing all day long is trying to get out of the glass, hitting its nose against the glass. its sad. Hopefully by next week, it will be fixed, but knowing this place, it will just mean the girl will have to take it home. And the turtle will still be being abused.
+Spencer McGill That's sad. Hopefully the turtle will be treated properly.
Ty for the information. Also, would a 40 gallon tank be big enough for a Mississippi map and a yellow belly slider?
nice turtles
If the fish are small enough to fit in the mouth then yes it will eat them if they are bigger then they will be fine.
So cute
It's a 45 gallon tank and I feed it daily.
thank you jesse
Tyler Jacobson Hope this helped you :)
i have 2 turtles that are about 5 or 6 inches in a 50 gallon tank and they seem to be fine
