Ha, this is great. My ps4 battery recently died out on me and I decided on this as a main SD replacement. It arrived around the time you posted the video. As for thumb grips, the switch kontrol freaks fit well, snug enough that it doesn't move in normal use, won't come off unless you push at an odd angle
Just for further clarification. D input (or DirectInput) mode claims, "I'm a standard Windows DirectX joystick/controller," while X (XInput) mode claims, "I'm an XBox controller." Microsoft deprecated the DirectX controller support in Windows (but has no plans to remove it completely at this point, because a lot of existing controllers work with it), so both will work with the Steam Deck, but depending on what you're doing one might be more convenient than the other. DirectInput has been around for about twenty-eight years (first introduced as part of DirectX 1.0), and old USB joysticks will all have it. It basically was the standard joystick/controller input for anything USB (rather than the old gameport that preceded it for game controllers). XInput has been around for about eighteen years, but didn't become common for non-XBox controllers for a number of years after that. Steam's controller support does a fairly good job of masking the differences between controller inputs much of the time, but you are much more likely to have to configure a controller using DirectInput than with XInput because XInput is more standardized while DirectInput is more flexible in certain ways.
Nice review! It looks like a solid controller! I don't need a dedicated controller for other devices besides PC, which I use my Xbox One controller. But once I get a Steam Deck, I will definitely be looking for one, and this controller you reviewed would be a good contender! Great video and keep up the good work!
Thanks man! I might have to try some of the other suggestions that have popped up but for now this is working well on the Deck. And my re-built gaming rig I've been working on... :p
I'm playing Gamecube Games on an emulator for the first time and my DS4 controller works really well so far. I'm playing the original Resident Evil 2 for the first time since 2008 and there are things in the Game that I don't remember but I'm playing the Gamecube version for the first time and I'm loving it, I just need to memorize the controls and the best thing about it is: the Game comes with infinite ammo. :D
Oh very cool! I've done only a SMALL bit of Gamecube emulation but it's still kinda magical. I remember being SO excited that I'd have 'all' of the Resident Evils on Gamecube when they first did that and I still have my GC copies but hilarious how many times these games would be re-released (or straight-up remade) in the coming years :p
@@YourPlayer2 Hey Josh, the best thing about the Gamecube version is that you can play with infinite ammo on Arrange Mode, I've been trying to find the Dual Shock version everywhere but I can't find it here in my Country. I had the original R.E.2 for PS1 but I can't find my copy. :( There are a lot of things that I don't remember and now as an adult I can understand things in the Game a lot better (dialogues, etc.) I wish I could find a Gamecube with this Game but playing it on emulator. I have to be honest now: normally I don't like emulators but luckily Dolphin is running very well so far, I just need to plug my DS4 controller and have fun. I even tried with a PS2 and a PS3 controller but without any luck.
I used cheapest with gyro OEM switch pro controller cost me 10 USD only. The only problem with OEM is dead zone which you can trim it down with SteamOS controller settings. Works really good, almost as good as my Dualsense.
The 8Bitdo 2.4Ghz Ultimate got even better now it has the hall effect sticks as well and official bluetooth support.. For just 50 bucks awesome value with the dock and perfect for anyone looking for a controller to use on PC and mobile devices like a Apple or Android tablet.. Buildquality also seems to be good, as you hardly read anything from people having iussues with it.. Mine is also still perfect.. Much better then the new gulikit KK3 Max (which I also tried and developed several issues within a few weeks of use)..
I love the Dualsense functionally speaking, though from a comfort perspective I've always appreciated staggered analog sticks even though that makes no sense to me :p
My favourite is my Xbox Elite 2. Excellent latency with the wireless adapter and the battery lasts a week. On the other hand, my now-returned PS5 controller sometimes had janky latency (Bluetooth) and the battery life was abysmal. Unfortunately, the back paddles on the Elite 2 aren't currently working for me with the wireless dongle. Hopefully that'll be addressed soon. It would be even better. The only downside to this, and many other wireless controllers, is the auto shut-off and the effect that has on games. Due to the controller drivers that many games use, when a controller disconnects it renders the controller useless until the game is exited. This means that if you have to leave the room for ten minutes and the controller automatically turns off, you're simply screwed. I've gone as far as buying (it should arrive today actually) a "Fingerbot" which is a device that can automatically push a button or nudge an analogue stick, just because I've been burned by this problem and lost game progress so many times.
I only have the original Elite but still working well! Didn't know that about the disconnect so appreciate the heads-up. LoL I just saw a video for Fingerbot the other day and was real curious!
Thanks for a comprehensive look at it. If it had symmetric sticks I would go for it. For now I have my stadia controllers and then my ps5 controller for 7 days to die which won't work with the stadia controllers
You're most welcome! Sounds like you've got some flexibility and Stadia was such a weird little experiment! I still have my controller knocking around somewhere I think?
When you shouldn’t spend the extra money and got the Bluetooth version is the greatest Nintendo switch and steam deck controller. 🏆🦍 I recommend returning it in spending the extra money before it’s too late
You can’t map the paddles in steam deck, but what’s even worse is when you get in the PC to map it you can only map it to other buttons. I needed to map it to CNTRL and SHIFT for CEMU emulation and can’t. Even my old PS4 controller can do this.
Glad you dig it as well! I tried it with my 'gaming rig' the other day and works well there too, but it's likely to remain MOSTLY a Steam Deck controller for me at the moment.
I've seen this controller in Best Buy when I was looking for a mobile phone. I think the most obvious downside compared to the Xbox Controller is that the 8BitDo can't be used with Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles. Not a big deal if you don't own an Xbox console or you mostly use it with Windows or Steam Deck, but that's something to keep in mind. The 480 mAh could also be a downside especially compared to Xbox controllers which can use higher capacity AA Ni-MH batteries (even the Xbox battery packs around 800-1400 mAh hold more than the 8BitDo), but you do get a charging station that allows the controller to always be charged when you're not using it unlike PlayStation and Nintendo which doesn't offer it out of the box although you can charge the Joy-Cons on the Switch itself. While you can use an Xbox Controller, using it on both PC and Xbox would require re-pairing it to the PC/Steam Deck every time you want to use it with the computer since the USB quick sync feature doesn't work for Bluetooth connections although using a USB cable with the PC (without the Xbox Wireless Adapter) does keep the sync with the Xbox Series X, so I can use the USB-C with my laptop and still have it synced with the Xbox Series X. Third-party controllers like PDP and PowerA are also another option, but the long cable may not be useful for PC users since you're usually next to the computer and it may not work with larger rooms with the PC/Deck/Ally being next to the TVs especially with laptops (side USB ports) and Steam Deck Docks where most (except the Nyko) have the USB ports on the back.
I'm interested in it, but the fact that the joystick is asymmetrical is a definite no-no for me. I much prefer symmetrical joystick controllers, which offer a real d-pad that can be used for 2D games, emulation and fighting games, and are more versatile than asymmetrical joystick controllers, which are only good for 3D games...
I've always preferred the asymmetrical joystick myself BUT, hilariously the DualSense is my favorite controller of this generation so now I don't know what to believe :p

Yeah, that was a sticking point for me as well. Someone else pointed out you could swap the buttons but I'd rather not go to the effort and just have something that immediately suits my purposes ya know?
I got the pro 2. It’s a great controller and does it’s job well. but like you I bought it as a dedicated steamdeck controller and the Pro 2 is set up more for a Switch so the buttons never match on the screen. Small complaint but if I could go back I’d get the one you got.
I HAD seen the Pro 2 previously, but hadn't considered it as an option. Sounds like my instincts on this one were correct though and I don't mind that it's sort of singularly focused as a Steam Deck accessory. At least how I use it (for now :p)
Hmm, that's odd? You might try doing a reset on them and trying once more. Failing that, I'd check 8bitdo's site for support options. They might be able to help you out with an exchange if it ends up being a faulty controller!
