  • Although we kind of know the answer to this question we are curious to know your opinions. Our goal was 9s for the Mazda but it did it so easily that 8s are a real possibility. Should we go for it?

    I don't care which car you take down the track or work on Scotty.... All the cars are great and the show is brilliant... Carnage has everything... Different makes and models of cars, humour, action, suspense, education etc... It is one of the best shows on you tube... Keep up the great work lads.

    I've had enough mx5, Ive enjoyed the content but it's time. I have been hanging out to see the 1uz Lexcen more of the trolvo and the Torana build to get under way. What ever you decide I'll be here.

      I agree Barras are a dime a dozen and I to would like to see more of the Lexcen 1UZ and supermang and or the Torana build

      Yeah, I think it's served it's purpose. Send it on its merry way to be someone else's RUclips channel starter kit, and put some funds into the budget to get stuck into the Hemi, the 1UZ, and the Torana!

    We'd love to see you 8's, but you go as fast as you feel safe. Sure, she's quick but maybe try and get her to be more stable down the 1/4, before going faster. Good Luck 👍

    I agree with several of the comments below, but I do enjoy seeing this little semi-budget pile flying down the track! Would love to see the combo dip into the 8s before it gets moved on though😎🤘🍻🍺👍

    Would love to see you take this thing further, it’s definitely one of the coolest cars on the track. Get a data logger in it and 2 step then wind the boost up a bit more, might as well push it to its limits then build a stronger engine engine for it so it runs safe all day everyday. I think the views are down compared to others because the videos have mainly been little jobs and tuning where as those other cars are full on builds which always will get good views, I think if you were to do some major work with this thing the views would be up but I would love to see this thing hit the 8s and give the big boys a good run for their money

    Well done Scotty, hopefully halteck surprise you with a free ecu, I say keep the Mx5, and see how far the rabbit hole goes, if the budget gets tight sell off the supermang, chasing 8’s in a Mx5 will always be more exciting than chasing 11’s in a vn

    Awesome job on the weekend. You’re this deep in now, why not send it?! Up the boost, smash ya anti roll bars on, drip ya extra weight and send it! This would be one of the fastest sbe green tops yeah? Shoot for that record!

    Good luck with it. You’ll need around 720rwhp to run a 9.0 at 2800lb/1280kg. Or 660rwhp to run same time at 2650lb/1200kg.

    Fantastic results Scotty. The best weight loss for the car would be (no offence intended) off you! I’m the same vintage as yourself and have faced this health issue too. You’ll feel so much better for it and be around longer for your family 👍🇦🇺🍻

    Get in to 8s and beyond its a cool car great content love what your doing go the a heltech ecu do cams what ever it need don’t stop pushing it good to see what your doing and all the projects are cool but the MX5 has a new lease of life so send mate

    I seen it go down the strip at Heathcote and it surprised me didn't expect a 9 look very quick from were i was standing couple of little tweaks like weight reductions and tightening up the body for grip plus tad more hp from zane and it will definitely go 8's 👍😜👌

    I do love this car man. That said I love the Trolvo too and the Valiant. What I like to see most though Scott is you getting passionate and wired on adrenaline. So I watch all of your vids. I also loved seeing the emotion over you dad's Ute, and how it was a bugger and I couldn't help smiling thinking he was up there saying "hah, my car will give you a good kick in the nadgers!". It's awesome of you to consider us, as most RUclipsrs just do what's right for them. But like I said dude I love all of your content, so relax and just keep sending it bro.

    The question is Scotty, is the chassis up to handling 8 second passes? On the subject of Top Fuellers... it's been 13 years since I witnessed the spectacle! That feeling of being pummelled all over with the vibration cannot be described unless you experience it for yourself. That & being bloody deafened even when wearing ear defenders! Cheers. Leigh.

    See what’s possible on the current power first, then wind it up. Fix the suspension, strip some weight and stiffen the chassis some more. Nail the launch and shift points. Once you’ve done all that, smash a Haltech in it, two step the bastard and let her rip!! From a content point of view, one episode can be the fixes and then some passes, the next can be more power, then passes. Two more episodes! Love your work guys, keep it up.

    Xr8 bonnet bulge on the mx5 look good
    Also I would be very interested in a turbo 5L iron lion lil over Barra n LS videos bring on the torana build please 👌🏽👌🏽
    Would also love to see more work on some hemi stuff dads ute or the wagon 6.4L

      Must admit for the past 15 years the ye old Barra has been non stop 1000to 2000+HP I would love to see more like old school 308 and 253,s the modern iron lion engines from vn to VT heaps of mad content there I love his dad's ute none of this electronic fuel injection rubbish in that Scotty I'm sure could tune up a carby with high hp and using the timing light in his ear show no laptop required and gut mechanical instinct just an observation

    Do whatever, but keep it and keep going fast. I like things being semi-budget, I'm all about bang for your buck, so if you can go 8s on a price tag that most cars would never manage an 8, it's well worth it in my eyes.

    You read my mind on the bucking. I think the tire is rubbing the wheel tub due to the chassis flex. An ARB will fix it. Great video, and that car is impressive!

    As an Australian car fan how can I not want to see our Last Australian designed manufactured Ford Barra do 8s! Our Aussie boys at Ford did us proud leaving us with a great winner combination! Please do 8s and also put our own Australian built Haltech ECU to manage it! 💯👍🏼👌🏼❤️🇦🇺

    Pinlock can be added to a helmet visor so that it will not fog at all.
    I think with an anti roll bar and two step will make a big difference. At last you have a quick car that’s so close to being the whole package, well done

    Keep it going! The only other logical way of getting a ~ 1,000 kg Barra is if you put it into an old Escort or Mk 1 Cortina - then you're just starting from scratch again.

    Its completely up to you and I think from how you are talking you want to do more with the car but cant say I am interested in anymore Mazda content, personally I would like you to recoup some of the cost and put that money to the next project then rinse and repeat that process.

    Hi Scotty, couple of things, firstly, logging with the Barra ecu, whilst not a perfect solution if you get a Bluetooth OBD2 adaptor, hook it up to your phone and use the Torque Pro app it has logging built into it, secondly hell yes go for 8's and a sway bar should knock a few numbers off straight away although you may also need to put taller spring in the drivers side rear to try to compensate for it being right hand drive without making the spring rates too dissimilar side to side.

    The only thing I'd like to see on this is a drag suspension trial and error, then it's a pretty complete set of videos. I've learned tons about this kind of stuff from your learning (Your parachute folding in the last couple of videos was neat, I haven't seen that anywhere else). I know how to set up suspension for track stuff, but I'd be pretty fascinated to see a base spring and damper set up tuning for drag racing. I'd guess the rear suspension is going beyond its damping and you're bouncing on the spring, perhaps even off the bumpstop. It's got the rear end for it, all the structure is there, now it's "just" the detail work!

    Go for 8's 👍 Do the suspension first, then cut the weight out once it's running straight down the track.
    You could move some weight over if your doing a full corner weight set up to help it go straight if it needs it.

    After the weight reduction, fitting a rear anti-roll bar and getting better with the launch RPM's, etc, I'm sure you'll get down to the very low 9's with a really good chance of breaking that barrier you're chasing.

    Gain some data acquisition, an ARB and a 2 step then you can relate to what the cars doing or not then the 8s will come. I believe its an high 8sec car without pulling anything out with you being able to have some consistency, wire in a shift light and an air/electric shift to help when the sun is behind you. I just subbed because i have a Miata and am going back to see if you did any vids on the SRA swap, i will be using a turbo Atlas 4200 though.

    What you are proposing would bother the bean counters much, like most of us out here you don't have unlimited funds. Fine tuning and fettling can produce great results. The smile on your dial speaks heaps about where you want to go, I think you should see what she is really capable of, just keep yourself safe.

    Keep the power as it is, sort out the launch, get your 60s down and set it up. From there it will all fall into place. Probably wouldn't hurt to try and find some kind of logger that works with the barra ecu aswell.

    Would be cool to see you run 8's in the MX5 for sure, but it would be even cooler to see it sold to a fan and the funds pumped into that Torana you've got hiding away :o)

    I think you need to try for 8s, I don’t think the MX-5 had a real concerted effort. Like you said Scotty, it’s got more power to give, could be lightened, needs anti-rollbar, maybe even a Haltech (which you can swap into the next car when you retire the Mazda). Go for it !

    that's the way Scotty. as the binky boys say, "adding lightness". lol love the journey you are going through with the MX5. enjoying the show as always. keep it up Scotty. i know every other keyboard mechanic will be telling you but go down a tyre size and a taller diff. more efficient use of torque? anyway, i recon he's good for 8's and it will be fun getting there. i'll have a lemon squash for you! i love the Mazda, bugger the haters, please have a play with the taxi when your finished playing with the Mazda?

    If it has an obd2 port there are cheap data loggers you can plug in.
    Or just run a haltec ecu instead of the Ford
    Strip it down fit removable side mirrors. Add a duct to deflect around the top of the motor and fix the the body twist and roll.

    Reckon ya did awesome mate. Fix the launch and I think anything in the 9.0 to 9.2 is a hell of an achievement. Could it do 8's I think it certainly has the capabilities. Maybe u need to some more visible shift lights, steering wheel shift lights. The only reason I think is to hit 8's everything needs to come together and the includes u, Scotty.
    Gut feel is 3500 rpm launch is enough and more boost at mid to end. Gives u a chance for car to settle n really turn it on. Also u can't steer if the wheels are in the air. People may laugh at me but do u think wheelie bars would be needed to reach 8's. It is a drag car. Take away weight, add weight 🤔 things start to get complicated.
    Maybe hire the track n take troll Volvo, mang n lightning n do a drag off to see who wins the drive in lightning to go 8's.
    I'd love to see ya go 8's but man I reckon that'd be one hell of a ride. Like hanging on for dear life ride. If u could consistently be in the 9.0 to 9.2 range then 8's are possible but What ever u choose mate just be safe.

    Appreciate the content, however I would like to see a bit more street machine builds being done like your dads ute. Something most people can afford, can work on themselves and see the results of their efforts. Hi tech ecu’s, turbos and dyno tuning while fun are out of reach of most. I learned a lot about cars from the early magazines that’s why I used to skip out of school, to get that new issue of street machine and read it front to back. I understand times change and it’s a business but a Mazda with a big sticker on it and a 6 banger. Please bring the Torana out.

      These days most people can't afford a valiant ute either... ECUs and turbos are probably cheaper than a torana or valiant ute shell, let alone a whole car

    An 8 would be great Mate. ;) I think it's very possible. I've a name to replace that front plate with, It's MAZDAB8. It's a Mazda, It has a Barra, and it's has the potential to do an 8. I think it's a nice play on worlds, and a little cheeky at the same time. LOL. What do you think?

    I'm far more interested in this car now than I ever have been. It ticks the box on going fast with a low buck engine combination and I want to see an 8. Also a rear facing bonnet cowl, add a hardtop to help with aero. Bracket race the thing and maybe do some drift events.

    Great little fun car. I reckon you could definitely get it into the 8's if you rip out everything you don't need to be there, and crank the boost up. The anti roll bar should definitely help. One thing though, let us hear the sounds as you rip down the track. It felt weirdly quiet watching the runs with no sound from the engine. I could understand if it was a Tesla Swap MX5, which would be fun AF (Yeah you should definitely do that at some point), but as someone who drives a Barra motor around, it needs to make some nice noises.

    I would very much go with the weight reduction, at least the low hanging fruit, like air-bags and glass windows. I very much agree it needs a rear anti roll bar, and that needs to be dialled in. Small amount of trial & error there. But you have a huge and obvious problem there with the car leaning to the right.
    The 'bucking' or surging, I'm very curious about what that is. Is that some kind of power loss and recovery? Like fuel surge? Or is that a tyre hitting the frame somewhere?
    I would be looking to get an after market engine management system. I understand the desire to keep the original Falcon one, but you're running low nines in a car that's not a Falcon, so ....
    My last bike was a ZX14, and in the right hands, while stock, it could have run high ~ mid 9s. You're not there to fk spiders at that kind of performance level, I know from personal experience ~ that's fast. If you've got a parachute and arm restraints and shit in it, then you're getting serious. Change the taxi engine management, and not just by adding a cheat-box on top of it ~ go full send and add a full after market box with adjustable everything and some data logging. You're not in the ballpark of one thousand dollar backyard builds to go race bomber-class at the speedway any more, you're running low nines. You have a parachute and full cage and arm restraints... You're beyond the point of using the same valve-cover gasket to save ten bux, mate.

    Push it until it makes 8s. You’ll probably never get there again, so go out like champions! I love my Falcons but the little MX5 is a real achievement you can be proud of. 👍

    Love the little Mx5 !!!! Wonders how many Tin's you Telf hammed after doing 9's !!!!!!
    Think you should keep going till breaks or it get too fast for your safety ! (POss even a built motor) then stick the engine in Taxi !!! and finally run 10 !!!!!

    With data logging and a bit of suspension tuning, that'll make improvements. Plus a non foggy visor. Haha. Plus a 2 step would make it easier to launch consistently. I'm keen to see how fast it can go

    I reckon sort the suspension, fit a large & bright shift light to get the most out of the engine and see how you go.
    If you can put the car on a diet that will help.
    If you then think you can can squeeze a bit more power out of the current engine combo without blowing it up give it a run and shoot for low 9’s….
    I’d love to see it run an 8, but I can’t see it. Prove me wrong mate 👍🏻

    If you decide to keep pushing with it, then I reckon trying to get the weight distribution sorted so it doest pull as hard to the right could help out (although I reckon a lot of it might be torque reaction from the live axle). It's a little car that looks softly sprung so even moving as may parts like fire bottles or fuel cells as far to the left as possible could help out. It cant be great for drive traction leaning that hard to the right. Just a thought if the ARB doesn't totally solve it.

    Go for 8s Scotty. Most expensive item to make the run has already been bought (roll bar) Doesn’t cost anything but time to remove weight from the car and to play with the tune costs f all too. Also for yourself you can then say that you have piloted an 8 second car too.

    Chasing 8,s would make for great viewing however you should do it in a Street Machine, there's no posabilty the Mazda could be registered, Its a race car and at the end of the day isn't "Street Machine " supposed to be about street cars 🤔 Keep up the good work 😊

    I think the MX5 is a beast love the barra engine I would like to see it hit 8s but i don't want to see it break trying (Sell it get the taxi into the 8s) I am looking forward to see the 1uz Lexcen & Trolvo finished.

    Think you have done a good job with the car I think I get told when I share it people come back with it looks a bit stuped with the wrap on it and don't take it seriously I say watch it for what it is
